Although he hasn't officially announced his candidacy, Wyclef Jean is talking about the good he could do for Haiti.

"I want to be part of a different kind of celebrity," said Jean, "one that thinks not just about charity but policy."

In a country where half the population is under 25, he might even get the chance. The singer is assumed to announce his intentions to run right before the deadline on August 7th.

Wyclef said:

"If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this. The quake drove home to me that Haiti can't wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century. If I can't take five years out to serve my country as President, then everything I've been singing about, like equal rights, doesn't mean anything."

He hopes to keep the media focused on Haiti and all of the work that still need to be done.

Go get 'em, honey!

Hmm…I don´t mean that previous Haiti presidents were particularly bright…but it doesn´t mean that anybody can get that job…you must be qualified ( even in Haiti)…otherwise it´s just ridiculous…

Celebrity status should not qualify you for being a president whatever country it is…

Will he be any less corrupt than the former presidents? Hmmm…

"Following the Haitian earthquake, TSG reported on Jean’s questionable handling of the finances of his charitable foundation. Along with filing tax returns years late, Jean used his foundation to pay himself and a business partner more than $410,000 for rent, production services, and Jean's appearance at a benefit concert."

Well the USA elected a B-list actor for President with Regan and Californians voted in Arnold. What's the problem with a musician for President of Haiti?

  7. 7

  8. 8

Ugh, I wonder if any repubs are angry that a "black man" is running for president.

WHAT AN IDIOT! EPIC FAIL. HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT POLITICAL POLICY, INTL MEDIATION, LAW FORMATION AND OTHER PROCESSES. HE'S JUST SOME DOUCHE WHO WON BROWNIE POINTS FOR HIS HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS AND POPULARITY CONTEST. BRINGING ATTENTION TO A NATURAL DISASTER/FOOD CRISIS IS ONE THING AT A MEDIA LEVEL BUT SOLVING DECADES IF INBRED POLITICAL CORRUPTION TAKES MORE THAN SOME HAS BEEN RAPPER. FUCKING EH!!!!! YOU KNOW IT!!!!!!!!!

He just found a bigger pocket to pick than his charity organization - an entire country.

"AUGUST 4–Wyclef Jean, who appears ready to announce his candidacy for Haiti’s presidency, owes the Internal Revenue Service more than $2.1 million, according to federal tax liens filed against the musician, The Smoking Gun has learned."

Like Aristide, enjoy being under-minded by the CIA.

I really hope this is true and he does something for his country because we dominicans are just tired to carry with the consequences of Haiti. Two countries sharing the same island and are like hell and heaven, Haiti is what it is today because of its people, who only know how to be corrupt, multiply and destroy nature and whatever is on their path. What that country needs is education so that they can stop living in their eternal state of ignorance. We are tired of haitians coming to the dominican republic to be criminals, rape, kill or beg on the streets, we dominicans have fought too much for what we have today, which is certainly not perfect or free of corruption, but at least we have a working economy, good infrastructure and threes, yes threes, haitians don't even have that anymore, they have burned everything!

  16. 16

Are we going to just forget that he was using his foundation's money to fund his music career?

  17. 17

Which of his mistresses will become the first lady???? Using donation money to pay them was doubly tacky…..

  18. 18

Like the Haitians don't have enough problems already. LMFAO.

  19. 19

Yea, musicians make the best politicians. Like he won't be lining his pockets with the governments money.
