Emma Thompson Taking A Sabbatical To Deal With Depression

Emma Thompson announced this afternoon that she will be taking a break from acting all of next year to focus on herself. She released a statement explaining her decision:

"I find the job I do emotionally very demanding. I suffer from occasional mild depression, which I think is a very common thing — it's fantastically common in my country and probably in yours, too — and it's a very much hidden thing people don't talk about. I think it should be discussed… Next year, I'm going to take a sabbatical. I'm not going to fundraise or perform or travel, except in pursuit of new vistas with my family. I've been meaning to do this for a long, long time, but it's been like putting the brakes on a large ship because there is so much going on."

Poor thing. This business can eat you alive if you let it!

No worries, bb! We can all make due with only two Nanny McPhee movies. Please, take some time for yourself!

she is an extraordinary actress! Get well soon

  2. 2

Sounds like an excellent plan to me! I wish her must rest and solace!

  3. 3

At least she cann afford to be depressed I guess. Sometimes I get it so bad that I am imobilized with feeling like dieing. Who cares? No one. I've been told to get therapy 3 times a week. They want $145 a session. Yep that helps the depression. She's lucky she lives where they can get seen without going bankrupt.

Try taking a sebatical as a waitress with depression. Guess what, you can't. Damn, we put dumb actors on too high of a pedestal.

  5. 5

    Aw, poor Emma.
    She's such a giver!
Imagine that? She has to stop and take a time out, so she can think only about herself.
    Yup, I need a break.
Stop worrying about how I look on film.
Stop reading scripts for me to star in.
Stop doing whatever I pay my agent to find me new jobs.

  6. 6

    Re: 7tizz

Agreed. I like her but had to roll my eyes. The rest of us have to force ourselves to get up and go to work no matter how we feel. We have real jobs…not simply playing "pretend".

  7. 7

You are an idiot! You said "This business can eat you alive if you let it!", but that would imply that you have a CLUE about HER business, which is acting. You are NOT an actor, nor or you in the same league as this woman. She is a humanitarian and you are a blemish on the ass of this country! Stop flattering yourself!

  8. 8

Calling her a poor thing is cold. At least she's honest about what most people are too chicken to admit. Plus I think it's awesome that she is just saying no to all of the bs demands that come her way constantly and letting them know she'll be unavailable so bark up another tree you mooches!

  9. 9

I like her but I was thinking the same thing. Just image how depressed she would be if she did not get incredibly lucky in life. So even though I like you Emma STFU.

  10. 10

good for her taking the time she needs insteading of turning into a wreck and neglecting her family.. I'm sure we all can only imagine how tough that business could be.. i agree with Perez i'm sure it could absolutly eat you alive.. as in "take all your personal time and force you to choose between work and home"

  11. 11

You lot are appauling. Just because she has worked hard and gained a privilieged life does not mean she is immune to deppression. It's not an emotion, it is a mental illness. People use it as an expression for their emotions, but it is a mental illness and I am glad that Emma is trying her best to fight it! Its not simply forcing yourself to get up in the morning… thats life! Its so much more that you clearly dont understand. And as for those people saying she shouldnt get special treatment because shes rich and famous, may you should work harder at your dreams and aspirations and get somewhere yourself. Shes not a freeloading Paris Hilton type, she has real talent and has used it well.

  12. 12

Perez's comment "poor thing" was meant compassionately. It surprised me that an American uses that expression, particularly when "just a piece of meat" mistook Perez's use of the term. I understand some of the bitter comments here because most of us do not have the luxury of taking a year off for whatever reason. Of all actors to criticise though, Emma Thompson would be the first to agree with us, as she seems very down to earth. I hope America gets its new Healthcare system underway soon. It is unimaginable how the most influential country on earth is unable to provide free basic health care to all of its people, particularly when lesser countries like the UK and Australia (to name a few) can. If Obama does nothing else, at least he has helped Americans with this.

  13. 13

she's also in Harry Potter. ^.^ she's Professor Trelawney.

  14. 14

Perez, you idiot, what do you mean *poor thing*?

She's talented, human, successful, and following her own path to health and happiness.

EMMA: We love you, we support you, we honor you for being direct, and honest, and increasing awareness about depression. Sending you all good wishes for a wonderful healing year.

Hey P-daddy: how bout YOU taking year or three off?

  15. 15

Are you new? Because Perez has no compassion for women. Oh, right, except for the ubiquitous LadyGaga, whose fall will be mighty.

Perez takes every opportunity to put down women in pain. Real human women are his constant target, and god help them if they live past 30, except for the disclaimer: *for her age*.

  16. 16

Obama cannot get the Public Option legalized because The Republican Party has their head shoved too far shoved up their fat asses. Their the type of smug people who like their own farts.

  17. 17

Why is everyone ripping into her for taking a sabbatical? Just because there are fucking depressed waiters out there, is she meant to not take time out for herself because 'regular joes' can't afford that luxury? She works for her money, like anyone else so shut the fuck up and stop being so bitter. Perez, stop being a douche, that whole fucking comment was gift-wrapped in condescension. She happens to be one of the most talented actresses of our generation. Not that you'd know much about what 'talent' is Perez! Also, there was no indication that 'this business' is what is causing her depression. Stop acting like you know anything about 'this business', you just so happen to talk about OTHERS in the business.

  18. 18

Jesus Perez…she doesn't sound THAT bad..maybe you're joking I can't tell. She sounds pretty normal to me. However, I agree, the rest of us have to trudge through the "down time". What I wouldn't do for a sabbatical!!!

  19. 19

Well I'm glad at least one of us can take a sabbatical. Get well soon!

  20. Bboss says – reply to this

"This business"??? You talk about it as if you're in it, you stupid douche. So full of yourself, when there's nothing to be full of. You make me laugh!

  21. Bboss says – reply to this

She deserves this break just as much as anyone. And because she worked hard to get where she is, doesn't make her any less deserving. More importanly….she does not need yours, nor our permission. All the best to you, Emma.

  22. 22

I will miss her so much! A truly diva. One of my favorites. Get well soon!

  23. 7tizz says – reply to this

Re: mattdeejay – lol, you said 'talent' and 'actress' in the same sentence. Your opinion is moot now. Acting is not a talent sweetie. Playing make-believe is easy. Don't let those dopes on the award shows fool you. It's one of the easiest jobs on the freaking planet.

  24. 24

  25. 25

…what a stupid cow…just think how depressed you would be if you never made it and ended up slinging hash…why do you have to make an announcement like this?…just go away and do what you have to do…

….just think of all those poor actresses that struggle and are twice as talented that never garnered any work…aaarrrrggghhhh I want to bloody stab her in the face…think how depressed burned victims or paralysed people or amputees must be…

  26. 26

Re: 7tizz – Bitter much? Everyone deserves a break. Depression is tough.

  27. 27

She's a fantastic actress and a gracious, dignified role model. Gosh, there are a bunch of haters and ignorant people here… very sad. I guess some people are so wrapped up in their narrow-minded preconceptions and envy that they can't see past their own issues. Yeah, well, good luck with that. Jerks.

  28. 28

The jealousy from this message board is oozing out from my computer. Everyone deserves some time off to relax a little. Good for her.

  29. 29

such negativity on the comments! listen, she is suffering from something that a lot of people have, and it is serious. she needs to do what is best for herself.
NOW. for those of you who are going "woe is me" because you weren't as lucky, try to help yourselves. if you are a "waitress", then no offense, but go into a career that lets you take time you need. if you have a SERIOUS illness you have the RIGHT to take time off. you cannot be fired.

  30. 30

Brave of her to be so open about it. Hope she gets the rest and mental rejuvenation she needs.

  31. 31

    Re: 7tizz

If it's just soooo easy, why are you a waitress dealing with depression, again?

  32. 32

    Re: windbourne
I am sorry you are going through that. I have been there too and it sucks.

  33. 33

Um, Perez, I don't think you and Emma Thompson are in the same business. You repeat stories from the Enquirer and call people ugly and fat. I am quite sure she would take offense to you claiming to share her profession.

  34. 34

I work for an organization that Emma has done a lot of work with. She is a gracious and fabulous person and I wish her all of the best. The work that she does for charity is phenomenal.

  35. kbah says – reply to this

Good for her. And she's right about hiding depression (or any other problems) being detrimental to the greater good. Think about how much insecurity and shame would be eliminated if we all could be honest about the things that are viewed as "issues". If we were all honest about how fucked up life is sometimes, we could all feel a little more connected and a little less ashamed of things beyond our control.

  36. 36

Honestly, I've seen the previews for Nanny McPhee II. if I were her I'd be depressed too.

  37. 37

Re: chirality – Thanks for your comment. I don't really get much kindness. I hope you have a good day/night. I hope you are feeling okay. I hold you tight in my heart for being nice.

  38. 38

"We can all make due with only two…."
    You are an idiot.

  39. 39

    Re: windbourne
Please. Don't suffer and think there is no hope for you. because of finances. Go to you local "free" clinic! They will see you and pay is on a sliding scale, some will also provide some of their services for free until u are stabilized. As a depression sufferer and a nurse, I can tell u there are options. Look into your county mental health center. There is help for you. Don't suffer alone. Hope u feel better, SOON!

  40. 40

Oh get the fuck over yourself.

Real hard working Americans will be losing their jobs because of a ridiculous drilling moratorium and you, who makes millions more than the avearage worker is depressed?????????????????????Pull the trigger and end the strife.

  41. 41

She has a cute husband too! I'd get happy quick if I was Emma

  42. 42

ive felt depressed before noone gave a rats ab out me and i still had to work
what the heck does she have to be depressed about i would be more impressed if she said im hormonal

  43. 43

She had to make an announcement about this? How self centered. And she's stressed? Is she a brain surgeon? I thought she was just an actress. Highly paid I might add. She's not struggling to put food on the table. If she had stopped working for a year and had said nothing no one would have noticed. It's all about me, myself and I nowadays. Nobody cares. Get over yourself.

  44. 44

Re: Edelweiss – You are an ignorant idiot. The Democrats (communists) are the party of the uneducated and ignorant. You don't have a clue what you are talking about.

  45. 45

why do these people "make announcements"? Why don't they just take the break without the BIG announcements? PLZ!!! soooooo self-important. THEY ACT…..THEY ARE NOT SAVING THE WORLD OR ANYTHING!!!!!

  46. 46

Get well and come back to us soon. Your friend Hugh Laurie probably needs a little downtime as well.

  47. 47

Love love her. Amazing actress and cool woman, who doesn't have plastic surgery trying to look 20 years younger with fish lips and then wonders why they can't get roles anymore — Melanie Griffith, Meg Ryan, you listening?

  48. 48

Plus I have relatives in their 50s, and they hit menopause and it isn't pretty. Their hormones are whacko and it takes time to regulate them. Every one of them, my mom, aunts, all had a horribly depressed period where they weren't themselves at all until finally got on the right hormones and/or antidepressant.

  49. 49

Re: x-koolazzmom-x – Thankyou ut down here in the Gulf Coast it is such a disaster that no one is really helping anyone. The thing I wouldn't qualify as my husband has a decent job he doesn't share and I can't find a job as I went to the wrong college for this area it seems. Tulane. The jos here are for Votech grads. I'm in a mess. I think moving from New York to here has just been such a culture shock that I just can't make it work. Thanks for your kind thoughts. Love to you!

  50. 50

shes a great actress, i hope she comes back stronger

    Republicans can't stop shit.
If Democrats can't get a bill passed, it's because too many Democrats voted "NO" and are worried about their own re-election because of Obama's unpopular policies.
    Democrats: 253
    Republicans: 177
    Independents: 0, Vacancies: 5.
    Democrats: 57
    Republicans: 41

America doesn't want socialized medicine like UK, Australia and Canada. It's one of the reasons it's lesser.
No one is flying into your countries for the better medical attention.
We had a teaparty a few hundred years ago to make that statement.
We're on the verge of another revolution to keep it so.
    Think I'm kidding.
The people have emptied from all the malls in America.
You need to go look at the huge crowds at the next gun show.
We're getting ready just in case.

98 more days till we have the last laugh sweetheart!
We middleclass Republicans are chuckling at the impending doom for the Flopbama Regime coming in November.
"ObamaCare faced voters for the first time last Tuesday and was diagnosed as seriously ill.
By a margin of 71 percent to 29 percent, Missouri voters approved a referendum to invalidate any ObamaCare mandate to purchase health insurance or any penalty for not doing so.—By Deroy Murdock
By the time you add in immigration, gay marriage, no jobs, no economy, plundering our Treasury, "he acted stupidly" reverse racism, terrorism on the rise, nationalizing our companies, and stopping drilling in the Gulf, we Republicans are down right giddy with laughter. So you keep chuckling darlin'.

    Alinsky, rule #5:
"Ridicule is man's most potent weapon."
It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule.
Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.
    We've read your rules.
Your ridicule of Sarah Palin and us has worked for a long time.
    That's over now.
    America broke on our watch.
We're fixing it, before we die, one way or the other!
A middle class conservative bitter clinger

  56. 56

Re: 7tizz – You do it then. God, you're dense. Never noticed how many bad actors there are out there or how hard it is to get into a proper dramaschool?
As for the people whining about not being able to take a sabbatical: first of all, depression is an illness. We're not talking 'man, I'm feeling down lately', no, we're talking full-on mental illness, the kind that takes medication and/or therapy to cure. Secondly, you have your country to thank for that, don't hate on Thompson or her position. If I, being a 'normal' person, would get diagnosed as having a depression I would be able to stay at home for several months and not suffer financially at all. I would have to meet with a doctor every month, doctor would tell my employer what's going on, employer would pay my salary as usual. It's more common than not.

  57. 57

Re: blondly7 – Exactly. But apparently some ignorant 'hard-working' folk believe people in the entertainment industry don't have a right to suffer from depression because, apparently, when you work in the entertainment industry it's all fun and games and it can't be considered work at all! It's sad really, how dense some people can be…

  58. 58

  59. 59

Re: windbourne – Tulane is GREAT school! I'm a Gulf Coast native as well and things down here just plain suck for so many people right now. I hope that your situation improves soon. Sending you lots of positive energy!

  60. 60

Re: LAanon – I am not new to this website. Like many here, I enjoy this guilty pleasure of seeing the celebrity world through Perez's eyes. He does choose his favourites, that is for sure. I don't get the Kristen Stewart hate thing or his Lady Gaga love thing (although I concede her talent) but then we all have our quirks, don't we. The real question is why do we keep coming back and even spend time commenting if he is that abhorrent? The political debate on this debate here also reveals a lot of frustration. I recently had a nose operation to help with my sinuses and it was done at one of our public hospitals. The waiting period was only a few months and I only paid for some medication when I left. Surely something like our Medicare would be a huge benefit for America? I hope the opposition to this scheme see reason for all Americans.

  61. MP says – reply to this

I don't mean to sound like a hater and I'm sure her depression is very real, but I hope she realizes how fortunate she is to be able to take a year off. This is something that isn't possible for the average Joe.

  62. 62

One of my favorite actresses. Hope she feels better. Too bad people working pay check to pay check can't take a year off to deal with depression, loss, stess, etc.

  63. 63

I love her. She's candid and she's real. She has worked hard to get where she is. If you're bitter because you can't afford to live well, that's on you. Anybody can better their lives. Anybody can go to school and get an education to improve things. Stop hating on those who have it better than you and take responsibility for your own destiny.

Re: White Chick – Yeah, no one simply says 'I want some time off' anymore. It's always some self absorbed litany, although I like her acting.
