Wyclef Responds To Sean Penn!

Sean Penn slammed Wyclef Jean's recent decision to run for president of Haiti.

So, the singer-turned-presidential-candidate responded to Penn's criticism on The Gayle King Show:

"The first thing I'd like to say to Sean Penn is that the area which he operates in Haiti is one area in particular," Jean said in response to the actor's claims that the rapper had been a "non-presence" in the country for the past six months.

"He hasn't seen me for six months—I've been going to Haiti for over five years…I am not absent in Haiti, maybe the tent city you're in, maybe I'm absent in that…My country is not a city of tents, meaning I can't use the excuse of people living in tents to say that I'm going to make Haiti a better place. I would like to tell Sean Penn I do not react on emotions when it comes to the Haitian people. I do not have to sacrifice my life and live inside of the tents to prove I am for the Haitian people."

Hmm, interesting choice of words. What do U think?

Don't rock Penn's boat, he may fall out & be in shallow water. He's a loser that no one pays attention to, just a media whore.

  4. 4

It's ironic how opinionated that little Hollywood Rat is considering how he played Harvey Milk to win an Oscar and he is one of the most homophobic people that has ever been a lead actor on the Big Screen.

  5. 5

Fail! Horrible response to valid criticism.

  6. 6

Wyclef Jean is a pimple on the face of the earth.

  7. 7

Haiti needs to have an honest government that will give to the people. The last president lived in a lavish fortress which is something most of his people will never see.
There needs to be checks and balances that the government is not corupt like in most of Africa.
Jean needs to loose the fancy suits and remember where he came from.

  8. 8

Like him or not Sean Penn has been quite the humanitarian and doesn't seek publicity for it. Wyclef? Not so much. I don't get what he could bring to the table as a leader for that country.

  9. 9

well his campaign just took a nosedive.

  10. 10

Wyclef is a sell out punk. He just wants a cut of the black market drugs that run through Haiti

  11. 11

Sean Penn is an arrogant, ignorant fool with a very narrow view of the world. Every time he opens his mouth, especially on anything relating to politics, he shows just how DUMB and ill-informed he is. Having said that, I do admire all that he has done to help the Haitian people. Maybe he should just stick to being a humanitarian, period!

  12. 12

Wyclef Jean is a singer. What is he going to know about running a country?

  13. 13

wyclef has no experience whatsoever, haiti needs a strong non corrupt president that look out for the country's best interest. Wyclef is a shady dude with his organization and his tax problems. I hope the people of haiti don't vote for him because he is a celeb.

  14. 14

Fucking bourgeois thing to say. Fail! Sean Penn wins this one. Sean Penn is talking for the lower class. He's out in the tents risking his life for those people. I'm glad as hell he spoke up because now the public know the truth!

  15. 15

definitely with Sean Penn on this one. Wyclef is an opportunist.

  16. 16

Wyclef is just out for himself and no one else… He love to live in front of the camera and show off, I have no respect for the man. The people of Haiti deserve better.

  17. 17

Hey, Wyclef! You're the one who wants to be President! Forget Sean Penn. Tell us what you've done that makes you so qualified? Besides stealing money from your own non- foundation? Wyclef should stick to singing! The people in Haiti have been thru enough. People take shots at Sean Penn, but Sean Penn has been there to really help and do something.

The people in Haiti don't need a celebrity who just runs his mouth. They need a workhorse not a showhorse. Maybe I don't agree with Sean Penn all the time, but he has been present in Haiti. Wyclef has not been. Wyclef don't use Sean as a distraction. The real issue is WTF have YOU done. I want to know.

  19. 19

Wow - Didnt even know Sean Penn was still around.

  20. 20

I don't know why these two are acting like children!

However, I guess I find Wyclef's run for Haitian office ia little weird, i am not going to lie. But the fact that Sean Penn just called Wyclef out like that is a little bogus! But then again, Sean Penn seems more interested in helping the most vulnerable people now, in the muck, whereas Wyclef seems more interested in changing the overall infrastructure of the country. They are both doing 'important' work. (I use quotes because I can't shake the feeling that both of these guys are doing it for the attention)….

  21. 21

i think he's not very bright. completely inarticulate. a liar. a wannabe profiteer.

  22. Mirax says – reply to this

The guy is an entertainer, not a politician. Why doesn't Sean mention the more obvious fallacy in all of this: that Wyclef is grossly unqualified. The guy is an entertainer and has donated his time and money to helping the country … so that makes him a philanthropist; NOT a qualified candidate for president. Where does he stand on anything, exactly? Do we even know?
What really irks me is that he is so arrogant to think he will change around Haiti single-handedly. Nearly 2 million homeless people, and millions more fighting over the billions of dollars in reconstruction funds. What is his plan?

  23. Jai says – reply to this

Haiti is a mess, the country has been more or less destroyed and it will need a strong leader to help it recover. Wyclef Jean, no matter how well meaning is not the man for the job. The Haitian people deserve a leader with the education, political skills and experience to help them through this difficult time….not a musician with an ego and a big bank account.

  24. 24

what qualifications does this ignorant negro have? does he have a degree? experience? intelilligence? he has none of that. he is a rapper. but then again that is probably why that country of negoes will elect him like the ignorant negroes they are

  25. 25

Re: xcalibur – yea and he is not qualified talking about he is the next obama, obama went to college and was in politics, what has wyclef done besides music and being shady.l

  26. 26

Re: BIGFOOT1 – penn has uissues as we all know, but n ia will agree with him on this one thing about wycleff

  27. 27

I think Sean Penn was right and Wyclef is an idiot

  28. 28

Sean Penn needs to mind his own business. Wyclef, I think will do a good job. I mean he could do no worse than their current Pres. No one gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a chance, and he's doing a good job as a Gov. in Cali.

  29. MeII0 says – reply to this

Whoa, he definitly needs to at the very least practice SOUNDING like a concerned qualified presidential candidate. That statement kinda did more to support Penn's comment than it did to defend Wyclef.

  30. 30

He's a singer, how is he qualified to be president of one of the most corrupt and poorest nations in the world?

Hi, I'd like to be President of France. I have no experience when it comes to politics (I mentioned France in a rap once) but I was born in France, so that makes me qualified.

  31. 31

And Sean Penn's a dick too. He should go back to acting.

  32. 32

Actors always think just because they contribute a few dollars here and there they are so dam special! How bout we take care of our own here in America!!! Sean Penn is a weirdass anyway!

  33. 33

Re: BIGFOOT1 – agreed Re: sniktaw – also agreed !!

  34. 34

So basically Jean's response to Penn is: ”Just because you haven't seen me in tents, doesn't mean I'm not doing anything” Ok fine. Jean fails to describe what he's been doing for the last 5 years in Haïti. Sure, he started Yélé Haïti a movement that builds global awareness for Haiti while helping to transform the country through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment. Yéle’s community service programs include food distribution and mobilizing emergency relief. Nothing really major has been brought to my attention about Jean's involvement and how things have evolved since the earthquake.

Wyclef is an artist with no experience in politics - much less in a corrupted country such as Haïti. It's quite arrogant and rather utopic that you 'alone' (I know he's not alone) believe you can change your country. Haitians haven't been able to govern themselves in over 200 years, what makes you think you'll turn that wheel around, Jean?

  35. 35

Opinions from too many people….I think I am sick of hearing opinions on TV, Newspaper articles, and on the net. No matter what we think, it is going to roll a certain way if we like it or not and no matter the strong feeling/opinion.

  36. 36

Sean Penn DIDN'T SLAM Wyclef. He voiced questions that anyone would ask. Wyclef has to answer important questions. His situation with the IRS owing money on homes, his not being a permament citizen in Haiti for the last 5 years. I know Sean Penn wants the best for Haiti and I know Wyclef wants the same as well. He didn't really answer Sean Penn's concerns and that's a concern. I don't think he will follow through because I think he will really see the mess he's getting into. If he leaves it will look like he's in it for the publicity. Time will tell and maybe he needs to visit the tents and live in them. Time will tell us all.

    Good luck to Haiti

  37. 37

Sean Penn has put his time and resources where his mouth is, so he has every right to piss on Wyclef's parade. I think Wyclef riding around in a giant auto entourage is obscene, just like Sean mentioned, and that he isn't the kind of leader the country needs.

  38. 38

While some people DO (Sean Penn) others are all just TALK - Wyclef is a joke

  39. 39

Is it just me, or does Wyclef sound like a total & complete douche? He should've stayed silent! Based on this ridiculous statement, I hope he doesn't become president of anything. How about showing "your people" that you can relate to them & you do have emotions, instead of showboating around a country in despair? !

  40. 40

Sean Penn and Wyclef Jean are both wonderful people for their humanitarian efforts. However, to begin a war of words when people of poverty and need are in peril, is no good for anyone. Wyclef may feel that he can do good for the country and in all good hopes, maybe he can. Sean Penn has been nothing but good for the cause of Haitian recovery, and I think both men would be smart to "stay quiet" and let the good nature of deeds and actions speak for their reputations and not let the the hollywood peril of ego get in front of the good work both men have been doing. If Wyclef is good for Haiti may the good lord let it be. Personally, I'd vote for Sean.

  41. 41

Can't stand Sean Penn. He's one of those people who likes to put his two pence in to stay relevant. Fucking loser.

  42. 42

classic American-style race conflict! I love how its so indirect nowadays! even funnier how Sean Penn obviates that Wyclef is actually BLACK .. and a HAITIAN, too!! … lol! … EXCITING!!!

  43. 43

Two words for Wyclef: DOUCHE and BAG.

  44. 44

I cannot say I trust Wyclef Jean to be president of Haiti a country in ruins. He lacks expertise in finance, politics, and public relations.

  45. 45

Haiti has been fucked left right and centre by everyone imaginable; mother nature included. With that said this country has suffered centuries of corruption not just internally but internationally by the global community, USA being at the forefront. If Wyclef is politically savvy he's not doing a very good job of showing it or any of his credibility for that matter. Yes he's done this and that in terms of humanitarian aid but that's very very different from dealing with ruling clans of Haiti who are used to wielding their power without question. And what's with the suits and private planes Mr. Humanitarian? If your such a humanitarian get grimey with the rest of them. If he wins the presidency I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes another political puppet.

I'm siding with Sean Penn on this one.

  46. 46

Wyclef sounds like any other third world, banana republic, 'boss hog' who says, "I cannot build a house for every person in my country, so I shall build ONE great and magnificent house, and I shall live in it for all the people!
    Fucking 'PapaDoc' Wannabe douche!

  47. 47

Re: Whoaaa – Haiti is in the Caribbean you fucking idiot!

  48. 48

They're both conceited douche bags. Case closed.

  49. 49

While I don't know what Wyclef's intentions may be in running for office…I WILL say that he's ALWAYS spoken up for the Haitian people–even before The Fugees got together/made it big… Since I'm not IN Haiti seeing who IS or ISN'T physically there/actually helping…I can't comment on anything other than that…

  50. 50

Regardless if I like Wyclef Jean of not, his "peole get getting him"" to help less

  51. 51

Yea, but if you're running for fucking presiden you could as, candidate devise a way to help GET THEM OUT OF THE FUCKING TENTS…Douchebag.

  52. 52

Leave the man alone. He is trying to do the best for his people and country.
Give the man a break. He is doing the best can. Se

At least he is still staying to hehk them

  53. 53

    wow… he's not the most eloquent speaker…

  54. 54

less fourtnate and actualtly what helped as many as he can.
Dod bless the home of Wyclef and his family. Kee0 on keepon keepon.
    God bless.

  55. 55

Wyclef has zero political experience. Did he even go to college? He is not the most gifted speaker either…

  56. 56

Wyclef Jean has absolutely no qualifications to be a national leader in Haiti or anywhere else. His "charity" has enriched him and his girlfriend. He owes the United Stets, which has given him the freedom to make a fortune, over $2 million. He is a charlatan and he has an inflated opinion of his intellect and abilities.

  57. 57

Re: PauMich – arnolt has his wife to help him, wycleff is inexperience…….

  58. 58

Wyclef misses the fucking point. It's not that you aren't going there and living in a tent when you are there. It's that as President, your fucking job will be to get these people OUT of tents an in to regular fucking housing again. Bozos like this should not be politicians, and lets hope for their own sake, the Haitian people are smart enough NOT to elect him.

  59. 59

    Re: PauMich – Arnold is a s t u p i d. He inherited a debt and just made it bigger.

Are some of you people s t u p i d. Wyclef is a rapper. He shouldn't as a president of a country. I wonder if any of you complained about Sarah Palin's or Obama's inexperience.

  60. lolli says – reply to this

i say go for it Wyclef. Haiti has had presidents with a background in law, etc and they still didnt change shit in haiti and can we talk about the corruption? fuck the white man, he doesn't know shit. you are from haiti, you know more than spicoli ever will.

  61. lolli says – reply to this

i love how everyone criticize and opinionated about the government of haiti, yet no one is from there. my family is from the other side of the island, and let me tell you its not good.

  62. oandc says – reply to this

Sean should STFUA because he is a communist and full of himself and has no clue what he is talking about. Wy is native and he has a clue at least. Now whether he can handle being president is another matter, but at least he knows what he is talking about.

  63. 63

I'm sure Wyclef is heartbroken about Haiti but he's probably not the person the country needs. I like the comment made by "lemonbird" saying Haiti nees a workhorse and not a show horse. Sean Penn made some interesting points if you look at the CNN video. I applaud Mr. Penn for using his fame and wealth to learn, understand and try and be a part of solutions for the tragedies of our time (Iran, New Orleans, Haiti). This is a man who could live the rest of his life playing golf and not make another movie for the rest of his life if he chose. Instead, he puts himself in harms way (even with body guards, etc…when you're in these places and the "stuff" flies, you're still gonna get in the way and death/injury is always a possibility) to educate himself and find the truth about what's going on. It's more than I'm able to do in my small life so I appreciate his efforts.

  64. Anne says – reply to this

I can only say one thing: Another haitian trying to take advantage of Haiti and squeeze whatever money has been donated, after all, that is all what haitians know how to do. Proof of it: their own history, that country can only be compared to the wort places in Africa.

  65. 65

Penn has time and again proven himself to be a fine actor. On this separate issue of politics he has proven himself to be a douche bag. Wyclef has proven himself to be a great entertainer, and is unproven in the arena of politics. We shall see. But, Penn is definitely a dick.

  66. 66

I don't believe WJ knows what he's in for. I don't think he would do a great job. That aside. The comments about him being a drug dealer are irresponsible. I don't like the guy, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start flinging BS labels on him!

  67. 67

Re: MarioMonjack – What is your problem? This isn't about race! Why is it that every blog has at least one asshole that makes derogatory statements about blacks even when it's not the topic? You are the ignorant one my friend. If you are so proud of your little racist rants then sign off on it with your real name! I love computers, but I hate that they allow cowards to invade sites and infect them with their backwood, 'Deliverance' type of philosophy towards other races! Oh, and you forgot to say 'YEEEEEE-HAAAA!"

  68. 68

Read about Sean Penn's work in Haiti if you question his sincerity. Like him or not, his work has been tireless. His efforts have been so profound that the US Army has actually placed him in charge of part of their own efforts. Army officers have even gone so far to say, that in spite of their political differences with Penn, he has been able to accomplish things that no one else could. Lives have been saved and improved because of him. He has been living there, in a tent for months now, using his own money and many of the contacts he has made because of his Hollywood connections. Opinions are opinions, but facts are facts.

  69. 69

Sean Penn may be a little "abrasive" but he knows his shit!

  70. 70

Re: BillBee – I could not agree more with this statement. Very well put. Wyclef Jean may well be Haitian but that fact alone is not enough. I admire Sean Penn very very much for using his PERSONAL wealth to benefit the poor and helpless in their time of need and genuinely save the lives of children, adults and generally make a (no doubt) grateful portion Haiti's people's lives and quality of living better than it would be otherwise. Clef swanning around in motor cavalcades is not only vulgar but really is a middle finger to the people making a genuine effort to help people. Jean is not the messiah. He's a very idiotic boy. Quite right the likes of Penn DO where likes of Jean DON'T.

  71. 71

haiti is in serious trouble and i dont think a pop star with an ego problem is equipped to deal with it

  72. 72

Wyclef….. Sean is SHOWING through very public action just how much he is helping at a ground level…
Be very careful with your choice of words here…
How many other of the past Haitian rulers didnt "Live" for his people but ended up enthroned in an ivory tower of a palace far removed from any real populace???

  73. melb says – reply to this

Wyclef's response sounds like what you would expect from any politician.
    Hey little man,
I'll make the rules but you guys, you will have to suffer the consequences.
Heck, I got money. I'll be just fine.
    Funny how that works-
but the little man will buy it.

  74. @v@ says – reply to this

You don't have to suffer to do good, but it helps you appreciate any good you might do.

  75. 75

Uhhh, not sure what the situation is, but Penn's remarks made more sense than this bumbling drivel.
