Emma Thompson Slams Audrey Hepburn!

The woman can't even defend herself — she's dead!

Emma Thompson is writing the screenplay for the remake of My Fair Lady and she certainly had some opinions about the 1964 version's star Audrey Hepburn.

"I was thrilled to be asked to do it because, having a look at it, I thought that there needs to be a new version. I'm not hugely fond of the film. I find Audrey Hepburn fantastically twee. Twee is whimsy without wit. It's mimsy-mumsy sweetness without any kind of bite. And that's not for me.

"She can't sing and she can't really act, I'm afraid. I'm sure she was a delightful woman - and perhaps if I had known her I would have enjoyed her acting more, but I don't and I didn't, so that's all there is to it, really."

Wowsa, Emma! Tell us how ya really feel!

What do U think?

Wow what a bitch thing to say! Menopause much Emma?

  2. 2

    jealous much, emma?

  3. 3

Haters be hatin'! Emma's just jealous because Audrey is a legend :p

  4. 4

    Audrey is a goddess!

  5. 5

  6. 6

she is entitled to her opinion, and having not seen any film with audrey in i can not agree or disagree.

  7. 7

This makes me love Emma Thompson even more than I already do. I also don't get what's so great about Audrey, she's cool and all but her image has been blown up to ridiculous proportions. So happy someone said it.

  8. 8

I love Audrey, I have a retro room in my home and a lot is dedicated to that era & a lot with Audrey…however, even though I'm not Emma Thompson's number one fan, the woman is entitled to her opinion.

Shutting her out because she doesn't like an 'icon'…is hardly reason to say "she's dead!". Get over it. As much as I adore Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe, you can't please everyone. Stfu.

One minute it's "speak your mind stop following everyone". & When someone speaks their true opinion we burn them at the stake. Tisk tisk.

  9. 9

emma thompson is a vile and worthless waste of human life!!! audrey hepburn is was and will always be one of the greatest actresses ever!!! soooo a big fuck u and die emma thompson!!!

  10. 10

    But she's right!!!TRUE HURTS!!!

  11. 11

This is my all time fav movie! If you are doing a remake..thats fine remake it but you dont have to be a bitch and bash the original! I now have no desire to see your movie!

  12. 12

in my opinion, with all due respect for emma thompson, if she doesn't like audrey's acting or the film, then she shouldn't write a screen play for it… give it to someone who has more respect for audrey and the film…

  13. 13

Ha! I love it Emma. There are a few of us out here (and getting fewer and fewer) who are still upset that Julie Andrews didn't get the part that she originated and highly deserved!

  14. 14

Audrey was a wonderful icon. She is the past and not the normal movie genre most of us watch now. Everything builds and creates the "new" so be happy she brought us all forth to what we are all at now instead of hating. She's a huge piece of cinama history!

  15. 15

How cheeky to say such things about a much-loved and admired film icon. I will definitely NOT see Emma's remake. What a nasty, smarmy person she is.

  16. 16

jesus…just cos she didnt like the movie doesnt make it bad. Yes Audrey Hepburn was a bit "twee" in the movie..its called ACTING!! thats what the character called for. Its a musical about a cockney londoner being changed into a posh lady ready to hit societys highest places…of course her character is going to be a bit over the top and "twee." Emma Thompson needs to take a look at her own work before she goes about insulting one of the movie LEGENDS! Audrey Hepburns legacy will last for centuries…if Emma keeps making shit like sense and sensibility and Nanny Mcphee then who knows what will happen to her. And clearly she has never seen Wait Until Dark, because she certainly would not be insulting Audrey Hepburns acting ability if she had!!!!

  17. 17

Its her opinion… she's allowed to have one, whether or not we agree with it….personally, I think alot of actors from 'back in the day' didn't really 'act' that well. It was all very whimsical and fru-fru…instead of just 'being' that character, which is really what acting is all about = you don't seem like you're 'acting', the character is just you… no more, no less. Audrey may have been a 'legend', but I think she aquired that title because of WHO she was and the way she lived and the way she looked at life…not necessarily because of the parts she played.

  18. 18

Wow. That was so rude and completely unnecessary. I mean Audrey Hepburn was a graceful woman and because of her grace, beauty and acting she is an idol. Idk why this "Aaaarrt of Diiiviinnnaaatttiooon" chick is speaking ill of the dead. Maybe it's because she knows her remake will flop HARD. Either way I thought she was going to take a "rest" for her depression? Maybe it's the pills talking or something.

  19. 19

Wow what a jealous bitch!!Aubrey Hepburn was an awsome actress I know all her movies. But Emma Thompson sorry no movies I can think of off the top of my head.

  20. IamB says – reply to this

Emma's comment is pretty spot-on. Audrey Hepburn is a legend, but she left a LOT to be desired in terms of pure acting talent. There just wasn't a whole lot of substance or depth in her portrayals. I'd be surprised if many Hollywood types jumped up to defend AH.

  21. 21

emma is a vile waste of human life! she should have been aborted

  22. 22

So basically she slams an iconic woman who has been dead for the better part of two decades. Very classless of Emma.

  23. 23

perez brother a few weeks back you posted a rumor about chris reeve. you may have forgot, but chris reeve was dead a few years when you posted that rumor. as you point out here when some one is dead they can't defend themself. try to remember that when you post things.

  24. 24

i don't even know who the fuck emma thompson is. audrey hepburn is one of the best actresses ever

  25. 25

Emma's RIGHT; Audrey was lucky to get to try out the casting couch!

  26. 26

Well, its kind of true. Audrey was more of a style icon than an acting icon; same as Marilyn Monroe. Alot of actresses back then were known more for their style rather than their acting abilities. Raquel Welch. Rita Hayworth. The list goes on. There are actresses today admired more for their style rather than their acting abilities, Zooey Deschanel comes to mind.

  27. 27

she's totally right? overrated beauty and couldnt really act.

  28. 28

In other words, you're jealous of an actress who is no longer alive.
FUCK YOU EMMA!!!! Leave Audrey Hepburn alone!

  29. 29

You have alot of nerve talking about a deceased person,Mrs.Thompson.Audrey was x10 more famous than you.Check yourself, cause you will never be as iconic as her.Bitch.

  30. 30

She wishes her work was loved or respected 1/2 as much…fucking nanny mcphucking outta her mind….depressed much about your own short comings??? gotta insult a deceased film-legend….BITCH?? Go talk to your old high school guidance counselor –> choose a new life career!!! 8-/

  31. 31

I suppose if you look at one movie in a whole career, maybe? But clearly jealousy is ugly because Audrey Hepburn has a signature look and movie title that last generations. Emma will never come close her level.

  32. 32

People get REALLY defensive and offensive of the stupidest things sometimes. Audrey is just like Marylin. An over publicized piece of marketing material. Yes gorgeous but very little talent, like so many actresses whose teams pays big money to make them 'legendary". Sadly everyone loves to drink the same kool aid, and just believes what they are told.

The truth of the matter, is that Emma has handled Shakespeare and other truly magnificent material with true brilliance… Audrey… was a lovely and charming puff piece. Just like Megan Fox, absolutely no talent but great marketing, so many of you "love' her, because the marketing was designed to make you love her.

  33. 33

    she's right

  34. 34

Not a classy move on Emma's part. And damn if you aren't hella late on this one.

  35. 35

Wow what a stupid move… Way to completely alienate the few people who are actually interested in this remake. Don't bash the original, especially if it has been regarded as a classic for generations. Honestly this thing has been in limbo for years, something must be wrong.

  36. 36

Re: mandolinorchid – "… she's cool and all but her image has been blown up to ridiculous proportions. So happy someone said it…"
So tell me, in your opinion, has Obama lived up to the hype
or is it really dummy George Bush's fault?

  37. 37

Can't Act? What is she talking about? Audrey Hepburn won every award there is, Oscar, Golden Globe, Tony, Grammy and Emmy, not to mention all the life-time achievement awards she received during and after her life. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work with UNICEF, spoke five languages…What's your problem Emma? Your work and achievements can't hold a candle to hers!

  38. 38

  39. 39

BLASPHEMY!!! Audrey is my favorite of all time!

  40. 40

Audrey was a real woman. She didn't rely on her breast to her anywhere like other ppl I wont mention. To hear someone say this about such a sweet woman makes me mad.
Good women don't get respect they deserve!!

  41. 41

Audrey was one of the finest actresses ever and she had a gorgeous singing voice. Holy shit I mean everyone dislikes someone fine but this womans being a bit too harsh to a woman that did nothing but GOOOOD things.
What a sour bitch lollll JEALOUSSSSSSSLY hurts :\

  42. 42

Emma Thompson rules. Audrey Hepburn is very nice and all, but she is very "twee" indeed.

  43. 43

Salty…but true. This was not Audrey Hepburn's film. The only reason she was in it was because Julie Andrews (who played the original Eliza on B'way) was contractually obligated to something else. Audrey CAN'T sing, not opinion…fact. In My Fair Lady, she is mouthing words sung by a woman named Marni Nixon (she also sang for Natalie Wood in West Side Story's movie version). And as far as her acting chops go…compared to other women of her era and their work at the time, Elizabeth Taylor, Shelly Winters, Shirley MacLaine, etc. she's really not even close. She is not a legend for her acting, she is more of a figure or icon like Marilyn Monroe.

  44. 44

She has a right to her opinion, but I idolize Audrey Hepburn. She had such class and grace-along with great fashion sense. I love Audrey Hepburn!

  45. 45

Never was a "fan" of Audrey, but damn!!! If
"Twee is whimsy without wit." and "It's mimsy-mumsy sweetness without any kind of bite." Then what does that make you, Mr (not a typo) Thompson. Nothing but a spiteful BITCH!! Never saw the original (not my kind of movie) and SURE AS HELL won't see this remake. I wonder who Mr Thompson is campaigning for the lead - him/herself probably. Now THAT would be a makeover. Do us all a favor and go on your sabbatical already.

  46. 46

wow she should shut up! Audrey Hepburn is a legend, jealous much? if she cant act then how come she won an Oscar huh?! i bet the remake is going to suck anyway! u cant remake a classic, tht y it is called a classic movie!

  47. 47

Honestly, she's right. Ever read the original book by Truman Capote? The character is MUCH more interesting there.

  48. 48

I have seen almost every film Audrey Hepburn has made including Roman Holiday, Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffanys, Charade, My Fair Lady, The Children's Hour and SOO many more so I think I can honestly tell you:

I love her but she can't sing or act! She is not of the same class of acting like Katharine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, or Barbara Stanwyck. She is an icon and that's about it. Granted she can act better than other women of that time like Veronica Lake or Jean Harlow. I respect Audrey Hepburn and admire her for all she did for UNICEF but I stand my ground when i say she can't act.

  49. 49

    Re: mandolinorchid
Yea, but what has Emma Thompson done so great that compare or outdo anything Audrey has done that she thinks she is so much better? This coming from the broad who did Nanny McPhee

  50. 50

Audrey was very much a style icon who went to films too, cause she looked good in them. Not the greatest actress–but she did have some good stuff. Emma–I get what you're sayin', but it still seems sour grapes.

  51. 51

Lets have Julie Andrews lower her hand so we can see her smirking.

  52. SeeMe says – reply to this

    What a bitch Emma is.

  53. 53

Re: Mad Dog – Get your history straight! She was a Christian Scientist, and both parents were fascists. And, if she had been Jewish, that's some crime you ANTI-SEMITE!

  54. 54

With her integrity and beauty Audrey will be forever in our hearts. Emma can try to compare herself to her… Keep trying!

  55. TY69 says – reply to this

how dare she disrespect her, audrey worked with the best people in the entertainment, made several classic movies and even gained the worlds respect…emma is just a goofy looking english innit!

  56. 56

totally agree with Emma on this one. about time someone said it!

  57. 57

wow emma, it's fine to feel that way but audrey was an elegant, intelligent woman till the very end. remember that letter she read to her children on her death bed? that is just an example of how amazing she was..maybe this thought was best kept to yourself.

  58. 58

Ouch! But honestly speaking Emma Thompson is an amazing actress compared with Audrey - Emma takes the cake for sure.

  59. 59

    Da-yum? Cocky, much? =[

  60. 60

Oh, for crying out loud. Audrey Hepburn's character in My Fair Lady was 'twee' and she did a great job. There have been movies where the emphasis was based SOLELY on her looks - but, I've seen her in other movies and her acting was really good. I happen to like Emma Thompson - maybe her goal is to simply be controversial and get a little attention. Maybe she had a 'blurting' episode. Like my therapist says, wait 5 seconds before blurting out something you might regret.

  61. 61

The only real problem I have with what Emma said is that she is stating her opinion as fact.
She never prefaced anything with "I don't think" or "in my opinion" and I think that's small minded of her.
I also think she's being a little egotistical with these remarks because she automatically thinks she's better, when many people throughout the years absolutely loved the original My Fair Lady, and love Hepburn in it.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I still think Emma Thompson is fantastic at what she does, I just believe she should have used a little more tact, and also needs to come down off her high horse a little.

  62. 62

I'd take Emma Thompson's assessment of Audrey Hepburn much more seriously had I not seen the former's rendition of "Sense and Sensibility". What an ungainly and maldroit portrayal of Elinor Dashwood on the part of Thompson in that film version.

However, I agree with Thompson that the 1964 musical "My Fair Lady" wasn't exactly Chaucer. Maybe not even Shaw. And probably not even Virgil.

But its an American movie musical, damnit! And as such it did its job within that genre! Maybe Thompson simply doesn't understand or appreciate that genre which was all about a certain wide-eyed innocence and lightness.

Hopefully, Thompson can handle the onus of bringing her snarky-mawkish tone to a newly revamped script. I have no doubt that the story can't be retold again for centuries.

But to bring ridicule upon a classic within its own genre and times seems rather unnecessary. So it wasn't Thompson's cup of tea. You don't see ME running out to see "Nanny McPhee" do you?

As for Audrey Hepburn? Her contribution to film as an actress and icon is well cemented. Heck, I know of people who "hate" Garbo or John Wayne or Marlon Brando, too.

Oh, you wouldn't know the NAMES of any of those who hate those legends, of course. But that's usually the way that works. lol

  63. 63

Audrey was simply… Well, audrey!! What better way to describe her? She was THE star, not just another actress. And all of her clothes were made by Givenchy: amazing!!
    Emma's just jealous

  64. 64

    Re: dmc33d
You're right about a lot of that. Originally My Fair Lady on Broadway was Julie Andrews' part, but Jack Warner didn't think she had enough star power to repeat the role on screen, so he got Audrey Hepburn instead. I think I remember hearing or reading that she was reluctant to play the part because she knew she didn't have Julie's voice. And since Warner didn't have the sense to use Andrews, Disney snapped her up for Mary Poppins - for which she won an Academy Award and cheekily thanked Jack Warner when she accepted her Oscar. As for Emma, I can think of one performance where her mannerisms began to intrude on her performance: Carrington. So ain't nobody perfect here.

  65. 65

    no its the truth

  66. 66

Re: face_time – Indeed. The movie was a travesty (not Hepburn's fault, though). And Emma Thompson has won Oscars (besides every other freaking award an actress could win) both as an actress AND as a writer. She is no "twee" dummy. The haters should shut the fuck up, Jesus.

Emma Thompson is a skilled thespian. Audrey Hepburn is a Hollywood icon, two very different things.

  67. 67

Why do people feel the need to re-make the classics? Why?! Just let it be! For the time period, Audrey was a great actress! She doesn't need to be re-made!

  68. 68

  69. 69

  70. 70

Audrey Hepburn; a classy, human woman and fine actress. The making of this 1964 film caused a LOT of buzz then and now, I guess. The film as a whole has not aged that well due to staginess and the fact that most of Audrey's singing is dubbed. The studio should have let Julie Andrews play the part that she did brilliantly on Bway but since when does Hollywood make the right decisions? Although too old, Audrey does a fine acting job and brings wit to many scenes [particularly the Ascot scene]. To each his own. But Emma is a wee bit harsh.

  71. 71

Yes, Audrey couldn't sing, but so can't most of the pop icons you idolize.
But she could act, and she was adorable. She makes Breakfast at Tiffany's bearable.
And My Fair Lady was an adorable movie.

  72. fiona says – reply to this

Emma is depressive. She is also an excellent actress.
Audrey as Eliza Doolittle is more than enough talent for me.
    She rocked that role.

  73. 73

emma thompson…first…who are you???? havent even heard of you and second…clearly you wish you could be an audrey hepburn since she is an ICON and always will be an ICON she wouldnt be an icon if she sucked you loserrrrrrrr…She is the most beautiful woman in the world and still is today even though she has passed on…tear:( but nobody disses audrey hepburn and clearly your jealous…i suggest you watch more of her movies…ull learn how to act and MAYBE just MAYBE ull become somebody:)

  74. 74

Re: IamB – I totally agree with this statement and Ms. Thompson's. I've seen a lot of Ms. Hepburn's work and she was most certainly more fluff than substance. Look, Emma Thompson's opinion of Audrey Hepburn's acting doesn't make Hepburn any less of an icon, just like Ms. Thompson's opinion doesn't make her a "vile waste of space". Get a grip, people.

  75. 75

Re: 50sGlamour – Just because some barely post-pubescent people have never heard of Emma Thompson doesn't make her irrelevant. Nanny McPhee not withstanding, she is a fantastic OSCAR WINNING actress.

  76. 76

Meow!! Emma can't hold a candle to Audrey, who was certainly a legend. Singer Marni Nixon sang the songs in "My Fair Lady," "West Side Story," and other musicals, not just for Hepburn, but this didn't mean Hepburn couldn't act.

  77. 77

Re: Edelweiss – Her acting prowess (or lack thereof) is debatable. I saw her in "The Children's Hour" with Shirley McLaine and Jim Garner and she was definitely the weak link there. Even some of the child actresses in that movie were better than she was. There was just no real nuance to her acting. She gave it her all, you could tell, but she wasn't a natural actress.

Fashion icon? Yes. Humanitarian? Absolutely. Great actress. Sorry…no.

  78. 78

Screw you Emma. Audrey Hepburn is an icon and a way better actress than you could ever dream of. You need to check yourself, and remember your kind of a no body in hollywood

  79. 79

    hahaha what a bitch

  80. 80

she's right about AH being overshadowed by the male leads, but wasn't she supposed to be taking time off due to depression?

  81. 81

She has just pretty much assured herself of a flop. This generation is not interested in movies like that, anyway, and her belittling Audrey has made it worse.

  82. 82

Emma is a brilliant writer, film and STAGE actress. She knows what's she talking about, and as much as i love Audrey Hepburn… the woman was a not a great actress and she couldn't sing. She was simply beautiful… utterly beautiful… and that's what we have idealized for decades… not her "talent".

  83. 83

    SHE'S TOTALLY RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

  84. 84

    Wow. So without class.

  85. 85

Re: mr.ghjunkie – Ah, renewed faith. What a great post :D

  86. 86

Wow…what a bitch!! Jealous much?? Who the hell is this lady anyways?! Audrey's a legend & Emma's a "And that is…?" kind of person! Gagag

  87. 87

What a BITCH!!! (But, then again, so is karma…so, HOPEFULLY even IF her version makes it to the theaters, it WON'T do well at ALL!!!) Wow… That's like someone re-writing (merely for example) Michael Jackson's "Thriller", and saying it's because "it wasn't a GOOD song/video and I think I could offer SO much MORE!!" WTF?!?!? I can't get over those comments…okay, so you didn't like the movie…FINE…But, to SAY that you CAN make it BETTER?!?! Wow…

  88. 88

If anyone actually bothers to watch My Fair Lady they'll see that Emma's opinion is valid. The acting and singing are absolutely twee. It is an overly light handling of that particular story and many people will enjoy a fresh interpretation. I loved Audrey in Roman Holiday and Breakfast at Tiffany's, which were sweet, light roles. But she didn't really put in a solid dramatic performance until 1967 with Wait Until Dark. Emma's critical assessment is astute. Let it go.

  89. 89

Re: WhateverLife – I agree with your point- but when Perez said "she's dead"….he was talking about Audrey!!

  90. 90

Really Emma, your a kinda old C lister with a acting abilities, but I've never seen you dance or sing (because you have never been paid to do so for the big screen or you have and it wasn't that great a film), but if you haven't made it as big as Miss Hepburn now you never will. She had star power, your the best friend.

  91. 91

I respect her honesty. Why should she lie and tell people she likes some actress because they are supposed to be an icon? She could have not said anything, so tt does come off as tactless. But at Emma's age I doubt she cares anymore what anyone thinks of her.

  92. 92

audrey hepburn is my favorite movie actress and imm only 18 so you didnt have to know her to love her movies. audrey hepburn was one of the last timeless actresses the world as ever had. she made great movies and still has a fan base today without her being around. emma wishes that she could have a following like audrey. she jealous and should shut up about her because she doesnt know what the hell she is talking about

  93. 93

lame bitch…you will never be 1/64 of the actress she was

  94. 94

She's right. I don't see what the hubbub is about concerning Audrey Hepburn besides her eyebrows.

  95. 95

fuck emma thompson! audrey is the shit! mizz hepburn would wipe your ass all over the floor in every category of the film business - go back to roles nobody cares about in films no one watches!

  96. 96

That's ridiculous. Audrey Hepburn remains one of the most highly appreciated and respected icons in America.

  97. 97

The world was a different place when that movie was made. Acting styles were completely different. Would her type of acting go over today? No…I think it would be considered too theatrical. But for her time, she was an absolutely marvelous actress and she and Rex Harrison made that movie a joy to watch.

  98. 98

It was a different time and Emma is an incredible writer so lets see what you come up with.

  99. 99

i'm not going to sit here and say that audrey hepburn was an incredible actress. she wasn't. but i love her movies and they make me love her. but honestly, emma is entitled to her opinion. maybe there is some jealousy there, because she probably ever be the iconic legend that audrey was. but that's not really her fault either. the movies made today just aren't on par with the movies from audrey's generation. the people making the movies nowadays are far too concerned with special effects and wow factors and the plot lines and acting tend to fall to the wayside because of that. idk how to feel about these comments.

  100. 100

is she trying to promote her work?
