Emma Thompson Slams Audrey Hepburn!

The woman can't even defend herself — she's dead!

Emma Thompson is writing the screenplay for the remake of My Fair Lady and she certainly had some opinions about the 1964 version's star Audrey Hepburn.

"I was thrilled to be asked to do it because, having a look at it, I thought that there needs to be a new version. I'm not hugely fond of the film. I find Audrey Hepburn fantastically twee. Twee is whimsy without wit. It's mimsy-mumsy sweetness without any kind of bite. And that's not for me.

"She can't sing and she can't really act, I'm afraid. I'm sure she was a delightful woman - and perhaps if I had known her I would have enjoyed her acting more, but I don't and I didn't, so that's all there is to it, really."

Wowsa, Emma! Tell us how ya really feel!

What do U think?

Haven´t seen that film, but I have seen other Audrey Hepburn films and I have to agree with Emma Thompson on this one! But Audrey certainly is and was a cool lady and fashion icon!

  2. 102

    who is Emma Thompson?

    103

    Who cares?

  4. 104

never understood why audrey is such a legend, never saw anything in her, i think she is just a scary think pretty face and nothing else. totally agree with emma

  5. 105

and that's why you're stuck in shit movies like nanny fucking mcphee

It's no difference that what any critic would say.. that's her opinion of which she is entitled. I love some of Audrey Hepburns work, but some was not as good. Emma is a brilliant, talented woman and can act circles around most actors today. Keira Knightly better get this part!!!

  7. 107

Love Emma, love Audrey. Emma has a right to her opinion. I can see her point and I'm interested to see what she'd do with the screenplay.

What country is this? Differ from my view of the world or opinion and you must die? Channel your anger by doing something to make life and the planet better, not just spew vitriol (as opposed to voicing one's opinion).

Get over it people and chill. Peace!

  8. 108

i don't think emma thompson is jealous, i honestly think she was giving her opinion. i know a ton of people who don't particularly like audrey hepburn's style of acting. there you have it. it's an opinion, moving on.

  9. 109

To all those saying Emma Thompson is jealous, why should she be? She is a very well-known and iconic , accomplished actress in her own right.
Fuck Audrey Herpburn, the only reason people like her at all is because of Breakfast at Tiffany's , which is a hugely overrated film.

  10. 110

Is Emma Thomson jealous? of course not. She is a very well respected actress - not just Nanny Mcphee! - and writer.

However, Audrey is regarded as one of the greatest female stars in the history of American cinema. So one opinion is not going to have much effect on how the general population view her. So put those claws away guys!

The sceptic in me thinks that she wanted some press for the remake though…

    111

She´s right. Audrey´s acting skills were not great. She got a lot of jobs because she was adorable. Can´t deny that.

  12. 112

Thompson is an excellent actress but seems to be somewhat of a twit in real life. She comes off as flighty in her interviews.

  13. 113

Emma is an idiot. Audrey Hepburn was an amazing woman on and off screen. Forgive Audrey for not doing boring ass films that people don't care to watch. LIke Emma is such a great actress? When was the last time she did anything more than 2 people watched?

  14. 114

Emma forgets acting methods were different in the past when Audrey Hepburn was in her heyday. For her time, Hepburn was a fine actress.

  15. 115

This woman is clearly a jealous twat. Audrey Hepburn was one of the most talented acresses in the 60s. She can NEVER compare to Audrey, not even close. So she should STFU! She clearly doesnt know anything. And she wont make the film any better. She cant.

Audrey won an oscar for best supporting actress for playing the princess in Roman Holiday. I consider myself very critical of actors and I disagree 100% with Emma T. Those were different times and if you compare her acting with the other ladies, Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn held her own and even though she never had proper training she managed to pull of amazing roles. She was definetely type casted but Emma is as well. She always plays the angry, single brit that needs attention. Bitch PLEASE!

  17. 117

Re: curlyhairatedge – you do realise emma is a oscar winning actress, and a screen writer. audrey is known for being a style icon more than an actress. get over it

  18. 118

She really can't act, huh Emma? She did win an Oscar when she was alive.

  19. 119

    Wow.. that was needlessly bitchy

  20. 120

most people are only big fans of audrey because of her graceful, womanly image and the fact that she is the figurehead for that particular era. many people haven't seen much of her acting and emma's entitled to her opinion.

  21. 121

Sorry Audrey owns My Fair Lady. Get over yourself Emma.

  22. 122

Audrey Hepburn's performance was terrible in that movie. I'm glad they're making another movie- hopefully the actress they pick for Eliza is half as good as Julie Andrews- because Audrey certainly wasn't.

  23. 123

WHOA that's harsh. No need to slam a movie legend when she is one herself. WTF I DON'T GET IT.

  24. 124

FUCK HER! How are they going to have someone rewriting a classic movie with a classic and CLASSY star who is apparently neither classy or even a fan!!

  25. 125

    Audrey Hepburn was a saint

  26. 126

its sad that your jealous that audrey hepburn an american icon and you just never will be. :/

  27. 127

Seriously..I think she is trying to get press. First, she annouces that she's taking a break to deal with depression but then gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? I see commercials for that stupid Nanny McPhee movie. Are we supposed to feel sorry for her and go and see her movie? Now, she's riding that bandwagon and remaking a classic movie..that doesn't need to be remade….and decides that trashing it & the star is good press?? That's really gonna make us all go out and see it, right?!?! Audrey was icon. I have read several biographies about her. She worked really hard on her singing…for what? For them to eventually dub Marni Nixon's voice over hers because they felt at that time that her voice wasn't strong enough. She did sing through out the entire movie and there are original recordings proving so. She was disappointed that they did that to her. I think that is what cost her the Oscar. It's just disappointing to hear that an actress like Emma Thompson needs to stoop this low to get press.

  28. 128

It is very interesting that the DIRECTOR of My Fair Lady… is getting no credit for Audrey's Eliza. Emma — whether she liked the performance or not, will be dealing with updating the DIRECTION and script of the movie. Remember, in the old days, actors and actresses didn't have much say about how they looked on screen, or what they got to say, or do. Audrey could act, but she looked very fragile, graceful, and gorgeous. Few actresses at that era were like that. In the movie "Pretty Woman", The scene with Julia Roberts cheering at the Polo Match, was homage to Audrey in My Fair Lady. And just so you know– MFL was a redo of Pygmalian… not a musical… If Emma wants to redo that… have at it! As for Julie Andrews, she had every right to be upset about Audrey getting the role. I don't believe she ever trashed Audrey… but I bet she had some really choice words for the producers. And about the Academy Awards… I believe Audrey was the only person in the cast/crew NOT nominated. AND I hope Hugh Jackman gets the Rex Harrison role…

  29. 129

LA LA LA, THIS TUNE IS ALREADY 50 YEARS OLD, EMMA. audrey got hell for her performance AND her singing (or lack thereof, as she was dubbed for almost all of the songs by Hollywood dubber/singer Marni Nixon) during and after filming of the movie. Julie Andrews got the oscar in 1964 (same year as MFL) for Mary Poppins - also making it clear that most thought Audrey was not fit for the part (Julie played Eliza in London and on Broadway). The film was very difficult on Audrey as she had her own insecurities for having been chosen for the role and is quoted for all of this.

i think Audrey did a great job - not to mention was the perfect muse for Cecil Beaton (who did the glorious costumes). She may not have been the best actress - but props to her for tackling it the best she could.

By the way Emma, YOU'RE WRITING A FUCKING REMAKE. TRY TO CONCENTRATE ON THAT. and fuck this crap anyway, i'm not going to see it.

  30. 130

PS, how the HELL is she going to find another Professor Henry Higgins. sorry, without rex harrison, you haven't got much of a movie.

DO A REMAKE OF PYGMALION EMMA, NOT MY FAIR LADY, PLEEEEEASE!

    131

She has the right to her opinion. People dislike others speaking ill of the dead, but there's an 'emporer has no clothes' feel to this remark, and a grain of truth.

    132

Emma has to remember that Hepburn and her work were admired and respected; plus it was a different time, and FAR different sensibilities and cultural perception. Anachronism will always exist. Hepburn was from another place and time, so respect is still due unless Thompson was there to witness and understand it.

  33. 133

Fuck her! How dare she say that about one of the greatest actresses of all time. Jealous Bitch

  34. 134

I sort of agree. Audrey was beautiful and stylish, but meh in terms of her onscreen presence. Emma Thompson is a goddess though.

  35. 135

I like Audrey but i just can't hate Emma Thompson.

  36. 136

I know she isn't involved with this, but JULIE ANDREWS FOREVER. Fierce, flawless, goddess, etc.

  37. 137

Though really, all she's saying is that in her opinion Audrey wasn't a great actress. Not altogether untrue. She was a beautiful human being, inside and out, but she played herself in most movies (by her own admission) and let's face it, she's known for her beauty, charm, and personality, not as the female equivalent to Olivier or something. Chill out, guys.

  38. 138

Saying "______________ much?" is worse than what she said. First two commenters suck!

  39. 139

The difference between Audrey Hepburn and Emma Thompson is that people know who Audrey hepburn is and she is an icon. Emma Thompson has a lackluster career at best. Her death will be a snippett on page five. "nuff said!

  40. 140

Not very tactful, but nonetheless true. Audrey essentially played the same character over and over again. She was a wonderful goodwill ambassador for the UN. She was also a very effective model for all the Givenchy dresses she wore in a lot of her fillms…."twee"…I like that word…."mimsy mumsy..etc…" Johnny Depp's girlfriend is a very good present-day example of a "twee" person.

  41. 141

Audrey was Dutch. Emma has lost a fan! I think what she said is just mean and should have been kept to herself. My Fair Lady is a Classic!

    Sorry this is just wrong.

  42. 142

what emma thompson said is true, stop getting all pissy.
sure, audrey hepburn is an icon. her fashion from movies and real life still inspires.
    but her actual acting talent?
and her singing is not that great. i read somewhere that she couldnt hit all the high notes when she sang in movies and another singer would do it for her.

emma thompson is a phenominal actress and i believe someone of her skill level can more legitimately judge if someone can act well, or if they cannot.

  43. 143

haha… who is Emma Thompson? She sounds like a loser.

  44. 144

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions even Bitches like her! I love Audrey!

  45. 145

    Re: Diva-Babe
Do you realize Audrey is also an Oscar winning actress as well? She's also won a Tony award and a Golden Globe for her apparently bad acting.

  46. 146

… who the hell is this chick? Hate to burst her bubble, but Audrey Hepburn is a household name, and this bitch isn't.
She needs to go to Hollywood hell for saying something like this.

  47. 147

It isn't that Audrey couldn't act; it's that the styles and methods of acting have changed constantly over the years along with the advancement in technology in film-making. People just acted differently than they do now. Personally, I've never been impressed with Emma nor her acting. I've always found her smug & pretentious, and her "look at me I'm acting" style boring.

  48. 148

Emma Thompson has no right to say this. After she got her Hollywood Star, the fame entered her head to deeply. You can not compare anyone with Audrey. She was Legendary! And who is her to say this? It's like Justin Bieber saying that Michael Jackson was a no one!Audrey was a legend.Emma wasn't,isn't and will never be.She just lost a huge bunch of fans.
