Has-Beens Take Over The Box Office

| Filed under: Julia RobertsFilm FlickersSuper SeniorsSylvester StalloneBusiness Blitz

Dudes win!

Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables beat out Julia Roberts' Eat Pray Love this weekend with an estimated $35 million.

Eat Pray Love took in an estimated $24 million at the number 2 spot, meanwhile The Other Guys and Scott Pilgrim vs The World rounded out at third and fourth place (ouch!).

Does this mean that aging stars still have what it takes to make blockbuster movies in Hollywood??? We bet Sly never thought he was going to have a hit on his hands ever again.

What did U see this weekend?

Scott Pilgrim was INCREDIBLE! But it is geared towards a very specific audience. It is either you love it or you don't get it. The entire movie is just saturated with old video game references.

  2. 2

This piece SHOULD be titled "Testosterone Beats Estrogen" - one day you're going to wake up and wonder how 40 happened too.

  3. 3

Actually dumbass, PEOPLE WERE TALKING ABOUT THIS SINCE 2008. So I think he kind of knew it was gonna make some money. If you wanna talk about has-beens, then throw JULIA ROBERTS in that category. At least Sylvester Stallon has had a couple great money makers recently. AND HE ACTUALLY WRITES HIS OWN MOVIES. Julia Roberst???? Not so much.

  4. 4

what a shame! Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is hands down the greater of all those movies! Whats wrong with these people!!!

  5. 5

This movie was an adrenaline rush… took the boy to this while the girls went to Eat,Pray,Love– they even said we got the better end of the deal..

  6. 6

You would think with Julia Roberts whoring her film out everywhere Eat Pray Love would have done much better and atleast made over 30 million! Hollywood will ofcourse kiss her ass and make this opening seem to amazing even though the budget and marketing were huge for a rom com. She's not that huge a star. She didn't do anything with this opening Meryl Streep couldn't easily do now!

Stallone only had a good opening because he assembled all the old and new (Jason Statham) action stars. He wouldn't have a prayer with any other kind of film.

  7. 7

Loved IT! I'm a female that also really wanted to see Eat Pray Love but it was my choice to see this one. LOVE Jason Statham especially!

  8. 8

Yesterday I watched Martin Scorsese's movie Goodfellas on DVD.
Today we watched Love Actually for the 4th time.

  9. 9

i'm an action flick fan, and this was the worst piece of crap i have seen since night & day. pointless, didn't make sense, hackneyed…all apply.
i haven't read any reviews, but i imagine it got trashed.

  10. 10

I'll be damned. Sucks to be Mrs. Moder this morning.

  11. 11

35M for an overhyped movie with every single effing action movie star out there is really not that much. It'll drop to number 2 next week. I'm surprised about Scott Pilgrim, which received pretty good reviews. And, Julia Roberts can kiss my ass and die for all I care.

  12. 12

Ummm I don't think Sly wrote/directed and cast this movie with so many action stars thinking this thing was going to flop.

  13. 13

I don't know why anyone is surprised. I am a woman and I have about as much desire to see that Eat, Pray thing as I do go see Mel Gibson go to Israel and kiss some people. Actually I think I would rather see that. It could be kinda funny as he is an ass.

  14. 14

New rule Mario you can't call someone a has been if people are still coming out to see his movie. Who the hell is not going to watch every action hero on the same screen?

  15. 15

since when was Liam Hemsworth in this movie….. why is his pic in the poster I hope this is just a joke

  16. 16

This movie was absolutely worth going to see. I only went because my son wanted to see it and I would up loving it. Its funny with alot of action.

  17. 17

So who is the has-been in this story, Julia "the-same-character-in-every-movie-she's-ever-been-in" Roberts or a bunch of guys who have been around for a very long time having a good time getting some entertainment done? Eat,Pray,Love is probably a stupid chick flick at best, at worst it should have gone straight to video. Julia Roberts is the most boring actress on earth. Bring on the old guys!

  18. 18

How are they has-beens. I younger actors today all suck.. All these guys are making the money.. They are all seasoned actors. How old are you Mario? You're getting close to 40 right? You need to stop with the age crap.

  19. 19

    Definitely the Expendables!!!

  20. 20

Scott Pilgrim was incredible and i am not even a comic geek. But if you remembered the 90s and video reference.. this movie speaks to you :) ) its soo funny. and Perez your commit is retarded you pretty much called these icons hasbeen… i cant wait when people are sick of GaGA

  21. 21

Aging Stars? Oh my god let's get them an handicapped parking sign for their car. People want good movies no matter the age and actor. Remember when you went to the movies and the story line would stay with you for days or you would leave and talk about it to your friends.

  22. 22

Why do you have to call them has-beens? You're a never-will-be. I think the whole cast is great! Don't be jealous because these men all have made names for themselves when you just make your name off of others. You're such a horrible person Perez. One day, someone's going to beat the living shit out've you instead of JUST punching you…you little bitch!

  23. 23

I'm a women and would MUCH rather see this action film than another romantic comedy piece of shit starring Julia Roberts' lips. Not all women like mindless unrealistic romance.

  24. 24

Im a woman and i LOVED the expendables.

  25. uyeah says – reply to this

Hasbeens? Look in the mirror. Stallone and company are solidly in the NOW. I would watch anything other than a movie with Julia Roberts.

  26. 26

Of course Sly's movie was going to beat out everything. It literally had every action star past and present in the movie except 3 people. You have all the 30+ guys that grew up watching those guys and you also have the younger generation wanting to see Jet Li, Jason Statham. Then you'll have the MMA fans showing up to watch Randy Couture. It was pretty much appealing to anyone 14-40 :S

  27. 27

umm everyone knew this movie would be number 1…except your dumbass perez.

  28. 28

I saw Salt. Hated the ending.

  29. 29

    The Expendables was fcuking great!
If you have not seen it, you have too.
I hope there is a sequel, everyone was great in it.
VanDamme and Segal are morons for not being in it.

    "I needa more money" -lol

  30. 30

Better to be a has been than a never was, eh, Perez? You could learn a thing or two from each and every one of those has beens.

  31. 31

  32. 32

I saw Expendables as a freebie. Too hot so hopped around the movie theatre. I LOVE action movies, but don't waste your money on this. It's like there was no script. No story. Boring action….kind of sad really. Glad I did not pay.

  33. 33

My dude took me to the Expendables. I thought I'd be the only woman there, but it was a good turn out and I liked it. Like someone else said, it was a rush of testosterone! ^-^ I had/have no intention of seeing EPL, the book was awful and Julia Roberts gives me a headache.

  34. 34

  35. 35

Not smart to throw around a word like Has Been.

  36. 36

You posted a post saying that you were for sure this would bomb, and now I can't even find that post.

  37. 37

fuck you perez! "Has-beens" ?? what the hell …

  38. 38

Scott Pilgrim was fucking amazing. Go see it you losers.

  39. 39

  40. 40

My son and hubby wanted to see it, so I tagged alone. OMG - the worst movie EVER. I was bored out of my mind. I finally went to the lobby and played some games — I couldn't watch those idiots anymore (especially the California Govenator).

  41. 41

    Re: mgardner

  42. 42

Re: stickrat – It depends on who you are talking to. On Yahoo! they have an average critics rating of B+ and User rating of A (meaning regular people loved it and critics really liked it to). On Rotten Tomatoes they give it 42% fresh (which is almost half liked). So no there isn't a universal hatred of this movie.

  43. 43

Despicable Me, LOVED it! Bet it was better than any movie at the box office!

  44. 44

WTF? Where did you get this poster from? Way to pull a random fan created poster off of the internet and just post it without research. It even says "Unofficial Poster" on the damn thing. Liam Hemsworth and Danny Trejo aren't even in the freakin movie. You suck! Also, who the heck wants to see Eat, Pray, Love? What a piece of crap looking movie. Julia Roberts being the exact same person she is in every other movie. Whoopie! I am a girl and I went to see The Expendables, but you couldn't pay me to see Eat, Pray Love. Yuck…

  45. 45

Re: mgardner – It's obvious you had your mind made up before you even saw it. Bored out of your mind? With non-stop violence, fighting shooting? How? Probably because you don't like that sort of thing. Also Arnold had like 3 minutes of screen time, so "especially" because of him? Really?

  46. @v@ says – reply to this

I would never call these actors 'has beens' but rather 'always weres.' They've charmed more than one generation of fans, and that equals box office. You have much to learn, skywalker.

  47. 47

Better to be a "has been" than a "never been" like yourself.

  48. @v@ says – reply to this

Besides, action movie go-ers kind of know that Stallone would not disappoint. Eat, Pray, Love is a chick flick, and Scott Pilgrim is a coming of age movie, but a cross section of all age groups like action flicks and so The Expendables actually covers the largest demographic if it catches people's eye. Good for Sly. When he has a bee in his bonnet, he puts his head down and works to make it happen, and damn the tor pe does.

  49. 49

    Re: mgardner

You should have gone and seen Eat Pray Love, this movie was not meant for fat middle aged housewives.

  50. 50

i saw the expendables and inception. the expendables was GREAT! way better than i had expected. i talked my bf into seeing it instead of scott pilgrim and we were very happy with our choice :)

  51. 51

They look like watchable average generic movies that add nothing new to their genres. I think I will save my money until above average ones come out.

  52. 52

I feel bad for the Scott Pilgrim movie, because that actually looks likes its bringing something new it's genre. Both of these add nothing to their genres but will make everyone involved richer. :(

  53. 53

I saw this last night. It was AWSOME!! the best action/fighting movie ive seen in a long time. it was funny too. i say go see it. its def worth the money

  54. 54

    hey Perez, you ignorant fuck
Rambo (2008) cost like 50 million and pulled in over 150 million worldwide

  55. 55

You don't have the dick these guys have or you wouldn't make "Has Been" comments. Each and every one of these men is a huge star, intelligent, talented, built like real manly men, prob fuck great too so pipe down with the aging star crap. The twenty, thirty, forty year olds are REALITY stars with no talent whatsoever!!!

  56. 56

Unbelievable this is the best movie of the year hands down the best action movie of all time. The expendables will get an oscar easy! All these great action actors deserve academy awards. This movie is so well written with such creativity and non stop action pack, that to be quite honest its just been to long for me since I have seen such a great film. I hope they start to make action films like this one, just like back in the old days.

  57. ONIT says – reply to this

Who's that young guy on the poster? Looks like Liam hemsworth or Logan Lerman. Don't see a credit on IMDb.

  58. 58

Hasbeens my arse. They took the boxoffice this weekend. Think before you speak dumbass. The movie was fun all the way through.

They beay Julia Roberts. Does that make her a hasbeen now??

  59. 59

Perez is is in a few words…A FAT NOBODY WANTS!

  60. Dr_C says – reply to this

This movie was awesome! If Testosterone and explosions could mate, this movie would be the offspring!

As far as Julia Roberts goes I have no beef with her.. but that movie was geared towards middle aged spinsters and perez… who really thought it would win?

Julia Roberts loses to a movie where her brother is the bad guy…. ain't life a bitch?

  61. 61

  62. 62

I loved it! I'm an action movie junkie so it was right up my alley. Perez, you're just not an action die-hard, boo boo!
That was classic beat it down, shoot it up, and blow shit up to it's fullest. My fave movie this summer!

  63. 63

when you get older, Perez, we will all call you a hasbeen too.
When in a recession/depression, like we are, people just want to take their minds off the BS of their daily lives. Nothing is a better distraction than an in your face action movie. Sly had said it was an old school action movie and that made me want to see the movie even more.
Did you really think Eat, Prey, Love was going to be #1 ? Uhhh Nooo. Yes, I am female, but I HATE chick flicks and think networks like lifetime should be off the air because many women take that crap they watch way too seriously to the point of destroying their lives/marriages, etc. The only way I would watch E P L is if someone chained me to a chair and cut off my eyelids.
The Scott Pilgrim movie looked, eh, ok-I'll wait for redbox for that cuz I'm not spending over a dollar on that film.
Kudos to Sly for slapping the critics in the face with the big box office numbers!

  64. 64

I'll take "Has-Beens" any day over "WannaBe's", or "NeverWasses"

  65. 65

The critics call Julia's performance dull. Her supporting actor (forgot his name for now) has stolen her limelight with his talent. Lol! Hey Liver Tits, as a Hollywood Insider, what do you think of "Rhinestone Cowboy ll" starring the original cast, Sly and Dolly? Would you see it?
