Why is it important for Gay people to marry? Isn't marriage a Christian Institution and isn't being gay contrary to the ideals of Christianity? Disclaimer: As a Christian I know we are all equal and all sinners, I get that. As a straight person I wonder is getting married as a Gay person important from a civil rights/legal rights standpoint and have nothing to do with religious purposes or is it about religion at all? I don't want to confuse the issue but I always wondered about this and could never ask. I have been married 8 years and other than companionship there is no legal benefit so I wonder what all the commotion is about?

      Re: Candy Cane

Candy Cane. Marriage, unfortunately, isn't solely a religious institution. Especially not a Christian one (seeing as people can get married in every country-where Christianity doesn't necessarily even exist).

The reason why we are having this fight is for many reasons:

      1) A civil union is one thing, but there are about 1000 rights gay men/women don't get until they are married.

      2) There was never a law in place saying gay people COULDN'T get married. That is one of this biggest piss-offs in this whole thing. There was never ever anything saying we couldn't but now 3 or 4 discriminatory people can make the decision for everyone. On NO basis.

      3) The biggest reason is just plain old equality. If you asked white people to vote on the rights of blacks years ago, it wouldn't have happened, but thank god it did, because we are more an more equal every day. The fact that they don't allow gay people to marry is a slap in the face and a blatant way to say we are not normal, we don't belong and we will always be in a different class of people.

Hopefully this helps clear things up. If anyone else is reading this, try not to get MAD or ANGRY at people who are uninformed….instead INFORM them. That's what this whole piece is right now, information, teaching, and EQUALITY!!

Re: xcodesxRe: xcodesx – Hello! Thanks for that info. That's sort of what I thought. I have no qualms about everyone having the same human rights and I love LOVE! I think you're saying that marriage is not religious (unless it is in a church, I guess) but a lovely union of two souls uniting as one forever, I definantly believe in that! Good luck! I have my own issues with the government denying my basic rights to do certain things, something I've done all my life but can't talk about. It's sort of the same situation. It's sad when we can't truely reveal who we are for fear of someone getting us into trouble or going to jail forever:( SAD! I do truely wish all of the Gay community the best. We all should have the right to the Pursuit of Happiness as long as it doesn't physically harm another!

I OPPOSE GAY MARRIAGE. HOMOSEXUALITY IS IMMORAL AND JUST PLAIN DISGUSTING AND SICK

    7. 7

WHAT DO YOU MEAN "YOUR RIGHTS"? YOU MEAN YOUR RIGHTS TO BE A PERVERT? IM AGAINST THAT. SHOULD THIEVES HAVE A RIGHT TO ROB BANKS? SHOULD RAPISTS HAVE A RIGHT TO MOLEST? SHOULD SERIAL KILLERS HAVE A RIGHT TO MURDER? THEN WHY SHOULD GAYS HAVE A RIGHT TO MARRY?

Seriously? He says they are raising money to "get rid of the bad senators"? What, because they disagree with you on ONE issue, they are automatically bad? What about all the other positive things that they do?

Oh wait, if you don't support gay marriage then you are automatically a bad person, right? That doesn't seem fair.

I don't support gays marriage, because I think civil unions should be enough; although I see that someone else has posted that civil unions deny gays 1000 rights that marriage would otherwise provide. That is sad and definitely should be changed. I agree that they deserve equal rights and protections, I just personally wish for marriage to remain as it has always been, which is between a man and woman.

HOW CHURCH HATE CHANGES WITH TIME:
      *
The word "homosexual" was first used in the very late in 19th century CE. (AD for you) There was no Hebrew word that meant "homosexual." Thus, whenever the word is seen in an English translation of the Bible, one should be wary that the translators might be inserting their own prejudices into the text.
      *
There was not even a word for 'homosexuality' or 'homosexual' in Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, the original languages of scripture.
      *
So many words in the bible's original text have no know meaning as the words died out. Words like “arsenokoitai” which was once thought to mean temple prostitutes then later thought to mean masturbation. At the time of Martin Luther, the latter meaning was in universal use. But by the 20th century, masturbation had become a more generally accepted behaviour, whereas many Christians were concentrating on homosexuality as a despised activity. New Biblical translations abandoned references to masturbators and switched the attack to homosexuals. The last religious writing in English that interpreted 1 Corinthians 6:9 as referring to masturbation is believed to be the [Roman] Catholic Encyclopedia of 1967.
      *
THE BIBLE changes to suit the hate of the day.
      *
RELIGION IS UGLY* GAY STRAIGHT AND BI ALL ARE 100% NATURAL AND BEAUTIFUL.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.-First Amendment to the United States Constitution
      *
You where a nation of Christians but you are not a Christian nation, never have you been or never will you be. The Constitution is clear:
      *
The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment prohibits the establishment of a national religion by the Congress or the preference of one religion over another, non-religion over religion, or religion over non-religion.

      -
The Equal Protection Clause, part of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, provides that "no state shall … deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws"
      -
Boarding a plane isn't a constitutional right, neither is employment # but to deny people those things based on race or sexuality is an infringement on the individuals civil rights and fundamental freedom it is contrary to The Equal Protection Clause, of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
      -
The Supreme Court of the United States ruled the following in its decision, ending laws which banned marriage between "whites" and "colors" in the case:
      -
Loving v. Virginia- "Marriage is one of the "basic civil rights of man," fundamental to our very existence and survival…. To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment."

"Why is it so important to call it marriage?"
      -
Because the same but different isn't equal. Just as taps for blacks and taps for whites where not equal neither is a civil union equal to marriage. Marriage is a social union or legal contract between individuals that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged by a variety of ways, depending on the culture or demographic. It is not owned by your church it predates them all. Code of Hammurabi 1790 years before the story of your christ is the earliest recorded marriage LAW.
      -
"decide on an issue not expressly included in the Constitution?
      -
You seem to have confused the role of the constitution in this, no one is arguing that marriage is a constitutional right rather that there is a constitutional right to equal access to and protections of the law for what is a basic civil right and fundamental freedom. If the law recognizes marriage of straight couples it MUST recognize the marriage of same sex couples!
      -
If your confusion lies in the belief that the church owns marriage, that is not the case the US government or State government thereof provides both the license to get married and the marriage certificate which forms the official record of such.
