Agreed!

They were doing well with it for a while, but Hollywood has definitely gotten lazy - and that is NOT okay!

The Centers for Disease Control released a HORRIFYING report today that reveals that cigarette smoking was prevalent in nearly HALF the movies released in 2009, and 54% of those were films rated PG-13!

Granted, smoking in film has reportedly dropped by half since 2005, but we think this is STILL unacceptable! Especially in PG-13 films! That age is when you're most impressionable!

Shape up please, Hollywood! Enough is enough!

This whole anti-smoking in movies is pure bullshit.

    2

yeah… because all these kids watching movies have no idea what smoking is until they see it in a movie…

  3. 3

Like you really give a squat about any one or anything but your self.

  4. 4

My God, so truly horrifying! Think of the children, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!

  5. 5

Also your LADY GAGA is a huge promoter of smoking!!! In just about every picture of her, music video she is smoking and she sings a lot about smoking! U NEVER talk about that though, u are always on other peoples cases about smoking. GAGA smokes soooo much! What is she getting paid by the tobacco company to be their face of tobacco. She must be the new Marlboro Man and Camel!!! MAKES ME SICK!!!!!

  6. 6

Bullshit. I didnt start smoking because a movie told me to. There are more important things going on in the world. Somewhere I think a little personal responsibility comes into play.

  7. 7

Perez it is an impressionable age, what happened to you during that period (I'm asking in a kind way)..there is healing.

  8. 8

Ugh. Shut your pile hole Nazi. What else are you and your kind going to tell everyone what to do? To each there own fatty :)

  9. 9

UMMMM stop blaming Hollywood, I have seen smoking in tv, movies, at school, basically everywhere. And I never wanted to try it. Blame it on the morons who don't realize that it is harmful. I was just smart and learned that smoking is not good for your body. Like I said, blame it on the morons who can't put two and two together. :)

What is this world coming to? If you give away the freedom of expression, no matter what length, before you know it, you have given it all away. Today it is smoking in movies, but if you place the bar at smoking tobacco, where does that place the elements within the graphic, yet poetic, films that portray the realistic–and sometimes horrifying or heartbreaking–people and times that move us, liberate us, and remind us of the struggle and sometimes ugly truth that resides outside of our plastic bubbles.

Take smoking out of movies, and discourage true story-telling, no harm done? Maybe not today, but what would the world be like if Clark Gable had his line from "Gone with the Wind" cut for it being inappropriate, and if every film following took the same measure–"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn"–If censorship kills creativity and truth, what does it breed?

  11. 11

What about alcohol? Drugs? Violence? all of these are in pg-13 movies!!

  12. mmmk says – reply to this

    12

sorry but no..smoking is everywhere not just in the movies..when I was 13 I already knew cigarettes were bad for you and tasted like shit because I tried one…never have I smoked one since then. Its your choice to smoke in the end..if your dumb enough to start smoking thats your problem.

  13. 13

What about drinking? Alcohol can be just as harmful as smoking, yet they arent trying to cut back on that.

  14. 14

They show boobs and say "fuck" in PG-13 movies… smoking is worse than that in your opinion? Who cares… kids need their parents to educate them about smoking, not rely on movies for their examples!

  15. 15

It's very obviously not the role or goal of most Hollywood movie producers to put out films that we should model our lives after. The crusade against smoking is old news. No more junk food in movies!

  16. 16

Its not Hollywood's responsibility to teach kids to not smoke. But with 90% of lazy worthless American parents, blame someone else. Its someone elses responsibility to raise and teach my children what wrong and right… Give me a freaking break. GROW UP AMERICA, TEACH YOUR KIDS RIGHT AND WRONG YOURSELF

  17. 17

MAKES ME SICK most of her fans are young and worship the ground she walks on. Her fans will do anything she does!!!!!

  18. 18

Mario send this to GaGa and Katy Perry. You are a hypocrite. There is nothing worse than a reformed whore and that's you.

  19. u787 says – reply to this

    19

wth? smoking cigarettes in a pg-13 movie seems perfectly suitable to me!!

  20. 20

cutting it in movies wont help. what they really need to do is bring more awareness to all the effects.

  21. 21

    Oh Dear Lord! Smoking!?!

Thank God they just show cranky, scrawny females and 'pumed up' looking guys who are both 10 years older than their audience.

Smoking is poop! Un-realistic ideals and horrible low self esteem….tot-ta-lly awe-some!

Yeah, I like pauses with my sarcasm.

    Smoking poooopy..Fire bad!

    Oh! Sorry! Grrr

  22. 22

DONT CENSOR ME! If i want 2 show my actors, over 18 (or even under) smoking that should b my right as an artist! Banning smoking is censorship! Do we live in North Korea. NO, so if u don't want 2 see people smoking in ur movies, stick to Disney or Pixar films. If you are not old enough to separate real life from films then maybe you should wait to see movies until you can handle it!

This is a slippery slope & I'm shocked that Perez supports censorship! He is 100% wrong & so are the people pushing for blanket banning of smoking in movies! What's next? Movies show sex, violence & drug use so should we ban those types of images as well? Should we only make politically correct films? Should we only make films for children and get rid of all adult content? Well i say fuck that.

Smoking is used as a cinematic device. If u watch a lot of movies, you'll notice that the hero rarely smokes (unless it is a cigar or a pipe). Smoking is usually reserved for the antagonists (the bad guys), the femme fetal, the street wise spirit guide or a random supporting character.

Look back at all the great noir films of the 40's! Look at the classics, look at the best films ever made and I promise you will see the most beautiful women and the most handsome men smoking cigarettes and looking classy as hell while doing it! Smoking is a classic American cinema device, almost as old as the medium itself…. and screw anyone who wants to get rid of it!

  23. 23

Yeah, Its Hollywood's fault all right!

Thats why when I see pro athletes getting slammed for "being a bad role model" i laugh. If a kid is so easily influenced by someone they never met just because they catch a ball or fake human emotions on a TV screen then thats not Hollywood's, The person's fault..ITS BAD PARENTING.

  24. ash,* says – reply to this

    24

shut the fuck up perrz hilton. I suppose if you really cared about the poor impressionable youth of today then you wouldn't have posted pictures about lady gaga or katy perry smoking. Everyone knows about the harmful effects of smoking. Its a personal choice and if some teenager is so silly as to run and steal a cigarette from daddy because he saw someone smoking in a movie then they have bigger problems than the smoking.

  25. 25

I really don't think its up to Hollywood to get people to quit smoking. I really don't think cutting it out of movies would really have an effect on the real world anyway. In the 'real world', people smoke. Noone needs to watch a movie to see people smoking and if anyone is really THAT impressionable that they do what they see in movies, smoking may be the least of our problem. Ideally a film is supposed to be a work of art and to some extent reflect the 'real world'. The number of smokers in this world appears to be dwindling anyways but its a reality and if I were a filmmaker, I wouldn't be concerned if the serial killer in my horror movie smoked. Know what I mean? If we are going to go that route, then we might as well remove all undesirable behavoir from film, which would leave for some pretty boring movies. Miley Cyrus doesn't have to smoke in her movies but if Al Pacino lights one up in some gangsta movie, I would say that would just be accurate character portrayal. Enough said.

  26. 26

    Who cares about smoking? Seriously

  27. 27

    who cares?

  28. 28

Re: e_manthey – I was thinking the same thing. The woman make music aimed at teens and young adults and in almost every music video either smokes or does some other "impressionable" thing.

  29. 29

Anything else you want to censor?

  30. 30

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE TAUGHT….. TEACH US WELL!

  31. 31

Hot women smoking cigarettes is sexy. Ugly women smoking cigarettes is disgusting.

  32. JuNoZ says – reply to this

    32

It adds to the story line amongst other things a lot of people don’t agree with. I don't see a problem.

  33. 33

a lot of those movies took place decades ago when everyone did smoke. I didn't see a lot of movies that took place present day with smoking.

  34. 34

Why is it always smoking that people make a big deal about? What about alcohol? There are people drinking alcohol in these movies too. If someone wants to smoke a cigarette, the only person they're hurting is themselves. If someone is drinking, they could get in a car, wreck, and kill themselves or innocent people. Hmmm….which is worse.

  35. 35

Re: kittiesomething – Since when did anyone die from seeing a pair of tits?

  36. 36

Movies (well, good movies) are works of art. The film maker can put whatever the fuck they want. Use your own brain and decide if you want to smoke or not.

  37. 37

You just jump on whatever bandwagon is cool at the time. If you really gave a shit about kids you'd stop perpetuating body image issues by ripping on physical flaws of attractive people, you'd stop posting snippets of porn, you'd stop encouraging plastic surgery (for minors, no less - remember poor Rumer?), and the zillion other disgusting things you post daily for all the children of the world to see.

  38. 38

OH BUGGER OFF. I hate nothing more than an anti smoking preacher…

  39. 39

My god, this is worse than PETA. It is not the film industry's job to shield vulnerable eyes from the evils of smoking. I would think that witnessing countless murders and other acts of violence on-screen is far worse than the image of a simple cigarette. People can think for themselves. Films tell their own story, they are not chapters in an anti-smoking propaganda campaign. Where is the group that counts the number of swear words used in Hollywood, or the number of times surgically enhanced bodies send "the wrong message", or the number of violent acts?
This anti-smoking group is probably worried about young children being influenced by smoking, but how many of these movies were made for young children to watch? Smoking on-screen is one of the factors taken into account when a rating is attributed. Did Woody take up smoking in Toy Story 3? Was Shrek trying to shake the habit? It's just beyond ridiculous. I know you hate smoking with a fiery passion, Perez, but don't let it overtake your senses. A child who is raised in this day and age will know about the dangers of smoking AND will have witnessed it on television or in the movies. It is the parents responsibility to educate their child on the dangers. Hollywood is not obligated to parent anyone.

  40. 40

Omg stop tripping on ciggs…if people wanna smoke that's their business. It's the parents job to teach their kids about the dangers not Hollywood!! That's the problem with parents these days they allow the movies and tv to raise their kids. I'd rather my kid smoke than be like LaLoca

  41. 41

It's none of your business asshole, smokers have paid their tax and they can put whatever the fuck they want in their lungs.
Gaga smokes like a chimney, why don't you take it out on her ? cocksucker !

  42. 42

    This is Bigotry Perez !

  43. 43

I really wanna know why Perez Hilton hates smoking SOOO much. I assume someone he knew must have died from lung cancer but his two so-called bffs Gaga and katy Perry smoke. Hypocrite much?

  44. byho says – reply to this

    44

well tell that to your lovely lady gaga!!! instead of preaching us… the same goes with her cocaine use…

  45. 45

It's not like every 13 year old can go and get cigarettes. I started smoking at 19 (I'm 20 now) and I can say I have never done it because I see an actor or actress I like do it in a movie. It's the parent's job to instil these values into their children, not Hollywood, and it should be the child's right to decide if they want to smoke or not when they're old enough to do so.

  46. 46

What about the pictures that paps take of celebs smoking on their off time? Isn't that just as bad?

  47. 47

Ok lets just make all movies with smoking, sex, drugs, bad language, violence, and all the other bad things rated R and make all our other movies G. Is that good enough.

There is war, famine, death all over the world and you complain about smoking in the movies. Way more than 54% of Hollywood smokes (on their own accord not just in movies). Most, if not all, of your favorite actors/musicians smoke because that is what happens in this industry.

Also maybe instead of questioning the smoking in movies you should be more concerned over the fact that half of the celebrities you post pictures of on your site (you even calling them beautiful) are way UNDER weight.

I'd be more worried about people reading your site and worrying they are too fat and then not eating and smoke cigarettes to keep the weight off.

  48. 48

    Get over it Perez.

  49. 49

OH NO!! "HORRIFYING" they should also ban driving cars, drinking, gambling, buying lotto tickets, serving in the military, and everything else that children arent allowed to do….. we wouldnt want them knowing about the outside world because that would make them criminals and drug addicts.

Perez you and your writers are idiots.

  50. 50

im pretty sure the sexism in pg 13 movies is worse than the smoking
    get your priorities straight

  51. 51

I gotta say, I read the comments expecting a lot of negativity about smoking in the movies, and was happy to see that the majority of people have exactly the right attitude: butt the fuck out. There are many worse things to get on your high horse about than smoking. And by the way, I am an ex-smoker who is sick of being told what is good and what is bad for me. You wanna smoke, smoke. You don't? Don't. If you're worried about kids being impressionable - and I really don't think you are - give us statistics about how many people were shot to death in the movies so far this year.

  52. 52

Shut the fuck up! Smoking isn't even illegal! This whole fucking holier than thou bullshit is revolting.

  53. 53

Re: HiHater_xo – Not true at all. When you smoke you aren't only harming yourself you are harming everyone around you. Second hand smoke. everyone knows that

  54. 54

omfg who cares ? if you wanna smoke you're gonna smoke, if you don't wanna smoke you're not going to, a movie isn't going to make you smoke. oh and btw - I LOVE SMOKING ^_^

  55. Jaded says – reply to this

    55

Get over yourself you hypocritical douche nozzle. If an adult want to smoke, its none of your fucking business, and you need to stop telling people what to do. You don't seem to like it very much when people comment about what you put in your mouth, so shut the fuck about what other people put in theirs.

  56. 56

What's the big fucking deal? It's not like the first time kids are exposed to cigarettes is when they see it in the movies. It's a fucking MOVIE. If they start huffing and puffing because some character in a movie does it, that's the least of their worries.

  57. 57

its true though. at that age you dont care about the benefits u think.. oh put something in my mouth smoke it (oral fixation) all the hollywood stars do it. whether consciously or subliminially. kids really do think it looks cool. believe me. everytime i see someone smoke i think they look so flucking stupid sorry for all the people defending it your a dumbass too smoking should be banned its the most harmful drug of all (psychologically and long term)

  58. 58

Re: Number1mileyfan … yes smoking is not cool. think about all the nonsmokers who have to deal with friends and family's secondhand smoke their whole lives.. everyone i seem to befriend either smokes or starts to and it sucks because i love people regardless even my mom for the 19 years of my life it is my number one pet peeve makes my eyes burn and throat hurt and i heard secondhand smoke is more harmful than real smoke so i really think smokers are really selfish in this way.

  59. 59

Lame. you better move to a cave if you want to shelter the kids from smoking. It was me wanting to have something in common with a hottie in 9th grade that got me smoking. Smoking has been around since the days of the caveman where they would burn plants and inhale the smoke. It's in out nature to enjoy smoking. It will always be around, there are plenty of people who live into their 90's still smoking. Pick on something else legal but more devestating, like, I dunno, how about alcohol!!!

  60. 60

I wonder if there going to give up dick smoking?????

  61. 61

Re: chritti – People have a choice to be around smokers. If your parent is smoking, why not leave the room or tell them not to do it around you.

As for Perez, this is the most idiotic post I've ever seen about smoking. I have nothing else to say about your stupidity Perez.

  62. 62

Not, only is non-smoking bullshit but it has always been one of the major character traits of villains and dark characters in movies, comics, cartoon and books.
And smoking is entirely too expensive for kids to pick up. I know damn well i'd notice if my kid was spending that much money!

  63. 63

What, Perez is going to campaign against smoking but get all butt hurt(no pun intended) when someone campaigns against gays and the explicit that is portrayed in movies?? What a joke.

  64. 64

Ugh! so what about the movies in the 30s, 40s, 50s…? They ALL smoked. You know what bothers me a lot about you, Mario? That you hate on people who preach on anti this, or anti that, and you come here preaching about anti smoking? Yeah, it does affect the lungs and it's bad habit, ok WE GET IT, but if someone smokes, I doubt that it's because of a movie… If people see it on movies, they'll see it anywhere they go, so you're article here doesn't make any sense to me, really.

  65. 65

HORRIFYING? Get a grip man. What's horrifying is what's going on out in the streets, not in the movies.

  66. malfi says – reply to this

    66

I dont believe that smoking should be everywhere, and that adults who want to smoke should be able to do so as long as it doesnt infringe on anyone else.

In movies though, what does PG stand for? Parental guidance. Parents should know what's in the movies they let their kids watch. They're the one giving them the money and rides to the movie theatre to see it in the first place so they shouldnt complain.

  67. 67

This is ridiculous, why the fuck would you cut smoking out of movies. People smoke. That's realistic, if no one is ever smoking in movies then they sure as fuck wouldn't be realistic. If everyone's so damn scared about their kids seeing smoking might as well not let them leave the house then…because chances are while out and about your kid is going to see people smoking. The only way you can try to keep your kid from smoking is to lead by example and tell them the bad things about it. Beyond that, there isn't shit you can do.

  68. 68

My father-inlaw is dying of emphazemia because of chain smoking for 30yrs. of his life and has to walk around carrying and oxygen tank. I think we all should do what ever is needed to help stop kids from smoking, they really don't realize what they are in for…

  69. 69

Smokers should smoke AT LEAST 20 packs a day. Obese people should eat everything they can & druggies should do drugs constantly. Majority victimless crime. That would eliminate a lot of problems.

  70. 70

big whoop if a kid is going to smoke they're going to smoke. It's like the whole gay or not gay issue. Doesn't matter if it's in movies or not so get over being a fascist.

  71. 71

So, it's ok to have sex and drugs and nudity and abortion all of this other stuff in movies, but smoking isn't ok? Ummmmmmmmmmm?????
