Are Conan's Writers Getting Screwed In Move To TBS?

Damn! We thought these guys were out of the woods finally!

Although Conan O'Brien managed to ensure that his writers would stay with him when he left the Tonight Show and moved to TBS, apparently many are unhappy that they'll be taking a pretty hefty pay cut!

An insider reveals:

"This is no surprise. One show was broadcast network; the other is basic cable. It's a different pay scale. It's not just writers; it's everybody. None of this is resolved."

We're sure this isn't easy, but we think these writers should just be grateful that in this economy, they had a boss that fought to keep them around and employed!

Hopefully they can negotiate something satisfactory soon!

Thoughts??

It's rare that I agree with you Perez but you're right. They are not out of work. They're just not getting the same pay they used to get. Conan could have been a reall douche and just looked out for himself. Do people know how to be grateful anymore??

He looks kind of like Spencer Twatt in this picture.

Give it a year on TBS, and they'll get their pay raise. I had doubts about Conan going to TBS, but my feelings have changed. I'm sooo looking forward to Conan coming to TBS.

That's a tough one. To the writers:

If you love Conan and your job, stick with him at TBS. Get a crappy house and car. If you're looking for a big paycheck, take another gig for more dough. If you can't find another gig, you're not that good. Hang on for sweet life and shut the hell up.

besides the hair… conan is kinda good looking…. im just sayin.

I'm sure Conan isn't super psyched to be leaving the comfort of The Tonight Show either, but you can't always get what you want and like you said, at least they still have a job doing what they love to do. After all, isn't that what it's about? Who wouldn't love to be writing for Conan? I think they'll manage. Sometimes, life's not fair. At least they're employed.

I agree with you. These people have a boss that seems like a pretty stand up guy. Conan could have just let them all go off into the world where they would still be making less money and possibly working under some backstabbing jerkbag.

  8. 8

I rarely agree with you, however on this I think you are right on the money. In this economy I think that anyone who has a roof over their heads and a paying gig - job whatever you want to call it should consider themselves very fortunate and just shut up. Also, while I am not a fan of Conan O'Brien (I don't dislike him his comedy is just not my style) he did go to bat for his staff and they should be thankful for that. I, myself, have worked for many bosses that wouldn't step up to the plate for their employees. Heck, I even worked for one boss who would throw her own people under the bus so they need to be thankful.

Fire them and get good writers. How anyone can find his show even remotely funny is beyond me.

  10. 10

He could have fought for more pay for the writers. He's not hurting in the pay area. They'll be out of work shortly anyway. He will fail and I'll be happy.

stuck his finger in the light socket again!

  12. 12

I'll write for him….it's kinda been my dream for years :) No really, I'd move and do it for minimum wage.

  13. 13

With Examiner.com Writing has become free. Too many run-ons.

  14. 14

Conan will take care of them and make sure they get what's fair. Didn't he pay people from his own pocket after the show ended? He's a great boss and obviously cares about the people who work for him. He'll take care of them.

Agree with you completely Perez. Conan had been my absolute favorite late night host. His style of comedy (I believe) pushed beyond limits, which had overshadowed his "rivals." I was truly shocked when he got canned by NBC. I've been employed with companies before that had cutbacks, but I stayed on with my "other family" because I was grateful and I loved them. A real team is unified and loyal. The monetary rewards will materialize soon enough for his writers. Wish that Conan could see my writing on the web. I'd give them a run for their money!

  16. 16

Like, everyone else has said, I rarely agree with you, but on this I have to say, Conan stuck his neck out for these people when he could have easily jumped ship and let them fend for themselves, and they more than likely wouldn't have a job. So they need to be grateful.

  17. 17

I hate to sound so cynical, but honestly the comedy is done. Most level headed people recognize how unprofessional he acted and don't have any interest anymore. What he did was absolutely taboo; You just don't badmouth your employer. Business is business and deals are deals and some of them are much larger than others and some of them may be viewed as unfair. But one thing you never, ever do it bite your employer's hand on their dime. That is an unforgiveable character flaw.

  18. 18

Blah, blah…at least they have jobs…and good ones at that. I am still having a hard time getting excited over Conan's return…he kind of left like a punk…a bratty cry baby. He didn't pull ratings…he lost his job…he found another job…whatever with you, Conan.

  19. 19

CABLE TV ALWAYS SUCK THE 1ST YR… WAIT A YEAR AND IF THE AD REVENUE JUMPS UP WITH SO-CALLED EXPECTED RATINGS THEN RENEGOTIATE LIKE THE KARDASHIANS. HONESTLY, CONAN SUCKS WITH HIS LAME ASS WHITE HUMOR. REMINDS ME OF THE OLD JOHNNY CARSON WHO PUT PEEPS MORE TO BED THAN KEEP THEM AWAKE. GEORGE LOPEZ IS THE FUNNIEST TALK SHOW DUDE RIGHT NOW. YEA, LEAVE IT TO THE MINORITY TO WORK TWICE AS HARD AND STILL ONLY GET A CABLE DEAL. TYPICAL RACIST AMERICA…

  20. 20

I am surprised he had writers at all. I could write that crap!

  21. 21

Hey i guess if it's so bad they could go and find normal jobs????

  22. 22

I think the return of Coco is going to change a lot in Television. It will be groundbreaking. Scale may change.
They are lucky to still have the jobs- better off than a lot of people out there.

  23. 23

JUST WAIT TWO MONTHS. NO ONE WILL WATCH THAT SHOW AND IT WILL BE CANCELED. CONAN ISNT FUNNY AND HIS WRITERS ARENT FUNNY AND NO ONE IS GOING TO WASTE THIER PRECIOUS TIME WATCHING THAT SHOW. THAT IS WHY HE WAS KICKED OFF THE TONIGHT SHOW. SO THEY WILL ALL SOON BE OUT OF WORK AND THAT WILLL TEACH THEM A LESSON

  24. 24

and you get screwed in the shitter

Re: Lillibunny – Dude…come on. He was praised for paying people out of his own pocket after the writers strike (a move that Leno later copied when he started to look bad by comparison). He held up his severance negotiations so he could get a better deal for his staff. He then went back into his pocket and came up with more cash for the teamsters on the show. Then he launched a months-long comedy tour–and didn't take a cent for himself–so that he could keep some of his people employed. What more do you want him to do? Name one TV host (or other celeb) who has consistently done more for his people than Conan has.

  26. 26

Re: Genghis Khan – So, no matter how much your employer lies to you, and no matter how much they lie about you, the proper course is to say "thank you?"

  27. 27

Re: MarioMonjack – Just wrong. NBC kept Leno because they had given him a $150 million penalty in his contract if they cancelled The Jay Leno Show before it had been in primetime for two years. When they had to cancel (because Entertainment Weekly called it the worst show on TV?), they had to give Leno 11:30.

    Re: xcalibur
Stfu you dumb bitch. George Lopez is a douche bag.
