Mad Men Is A Health Hazard

Desperate Housewives' Kathryn Joosten is a proud lung cancer survivor. She has beaten the disease twice and is concerned that the hit show Mad Men is enticing viewers to smoke.

She said:

"I think they should at least have a disclaimer at the front of the show saying smoking is relevant to the time and place with the subject matter we're dealing with and it is not recommended because it causes cancer. They should at least do that.

Mad Men producers should also provide annual chest x-rays "for any member of the cast and crew who wants one."

Great idea! Just because Don Draper does it, doesn't mean you have to light up!

The cast, crew, and producers have given numerous interviews stating that they do NOT use real cigarettes in filming the show. Herbal cigarettes are used that are in no way harmful.

  2. 2

in this day in age if one doesn't know the dangers of smoking, they probably shouldn't be sitting in front of a tv as an education sounds much more suitable for them. producers providing annual chest x-rays?? sounds like she needs a brain transplant………..

This old crotchetety bitch should go fuck her lung. i hate it when people abuse their bodies to a bloody pulp and then blame someone else for it. mad Men is a fucking show…die

Ms. Joosten, you don't honestly think they'd smoke real cigarettes do you!??? If anything, they should put a disclaimer in the beginning of the show stating that they are herbal cigarettes and aren't harmful. Personally I find it so gross just watching them even "fake" smoke.

  5. 5

Oh my gosh - are you telling me that I DON'T HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING THEY DO IN THE MOVIES. If you had put a disclaimer in front of Fight Club I wouldn't have beat all those people up, or Drifted my car into the overpass, of slept around with all those vampires. Why in the world didn't they warn me!!!!

  6. 6

omg..what is it with americans? do they really need everything spelled out?? If u dont know smoking causes illness, you've been living under a rock. I dont think they sell cigarettes under that rock…

  7. 7

While I do agree about the disclaimer- I have a couple arguments

    1) Mad Men is geared toward an older audience not children or teens - so I am hoping most people of that generation know that smoking causes cancer and is not "cool" - (this isn't gossip girl) - but I do understand why that may be a good idea regardless.

    2) The cast themselves smoke Herbal fake "cigarettes" that do not contain actual tobacco and/or nicotine thus causing chest xrays to the staff to be a moot point.

  8. 8

It does just the opposite to me. I feel like I'm having trouble breathing after I watch it.

Surely, people who watch it realize that this show takes place when smoking was a more acceptable vice.

  9. 9

That is the most retarded thing I've ever heard in my life. This isn't a kids show, it's a show for adults. Anyone who is watching Mad Men is old enough and intelligent enough to know that smoking causes cancer. We don't need anymore fucking disclaimers. At this point, anyone who is still smoking either doesn't care or doesn't want to stop. Get the fuck over it.

  10. 10

do you think people are so stupid that they can't tell by the content, set design, costumes, and just about everything else depicts the era of almost 50 years ago? duh.
put disclaimers on john wayne movies that you shouldn't carry a holstered gun. please.

  11. 11

America needs to LIGHTEN UP!!!!! If you put a smoking disclaimer you'll have to put a sex disclaimer since being promiscuous can lead to AIDS. Oh, and on some shows that have improper food consumption it can lead to obesity and then death…

Give me a break! Smoking is a choice… leave it that way.

  12. 12

The show takes place in the 60's. The two martini lunch, smoking, sexism etc…it's historically acurate.

  13. 13

At this point in time, do we REALLY need to inform the ADULTS that watch this show that smoking is bad? How absurd! Everyone knows it's bad… that's not going to stop anyone from smoking if they want to.

  14. 14

Oh please. Anyone who is old enough to watch Mad Men should already know that smoking was a staple in that time period. If you watch Mad Men, you should be old enough to not let what you see on TV influence you.

  15. 15

I'm sorry, but when have we given away ALL of our common sense? In order to be historically accurate, they have to show smoking in context, and if we can't recognize that for what it is…
And besides, they are not smoking tobbaco cigarettes… California law does not allow it in the work place, so they are using 'fake' smokes. (Read that in an interview with Jon Hamm)

  16. 16

Who are we kidding? They just as easily could NOT be smoking in this show. Authenticit or not, they are still sending a message that smoking is "cool."

  17. 17

you mean to tell me people don't have enough commopn sense to know smoking is harmful? come on people. HAVE A MIND OF YOUR OWN.

  18. 18

if she's going to address the smoking then she should also say something about the drinking cause they smoke as much as they drink on the show.

  19. 19

And yet no one wants them to put a disclaimer in front of the show warning that consuming that much alcohol at work is hazardous to your health and might get you fired, that married men having unprotected sex with multiple other women may lead to disease or pregnancy or divorce or maybe that last night's episode should have had a disclaimer to young girls warning them that their first foray into masturbation should not happen at a friend's sleepover or you may get sent home early.

  20. 20

Christ almighty. How PC do we have to get?
    -
Where do we stop? Should disclaimers flash all over the screen every time we're about to see a fictional character smoke, drink, drive too fast, punch someone, rob a bank, eat red meat, walk outside without applying sunblock, jaywalk, ride a pogo stick without wearing a helmet, disrespect a senior citizen or place a recyclable in the general trash?
    -
Anyone stupid enough to start smoking because he sees Don Draper doing it on TV would be too stupid to even understand the disclaimer!

  21. 21

Re: Douche Hunter – I think I love you.

  22. 22

While I think it is fair to give medical care to the cast and crew I think it's ridiculous that they should have to put up a disclaimer. If people are stupid enough to start smoking and drinking excessively because characters on a show do it then they have no brains. If the concern is around younger viewers then that shouldn't be the show's responsibility either - the parents should be monitoring what they're watching and the show is targeted at and rated for an older audience. One that presumably can make their own intelligent decisions versus choosing to smoke/drink just because the character of Don Draper does it. Ridiculous.

  23. 23

Not necessary to do that…we are all adults who are watching that how…if not I would hope any children are watching with their parents who are free to advise their children.

  24. 24

I think smoking stinks, and I have always hated it. My mother had me rather late in life and when she worked at the Waldorf it was at the height of the Madmen era, but she always hated smoking, yet she died of lung cancer, and it went incredibly fast which is what happens to non-smokers. Think about Dane Reeves. People who smoke actually have a lot better chance like this woman did of getting better so I say smoke away (no not really). Actually the smell is the problem. I am sure the herbal smokes do nothing and the place smells like a hell, but tell this woman to suck it up. I am sure I will just forward through her idiot disclaimer so can kiss my ass. I am still pissed about my mother and she should just shut up good God she has had two chances, and now she wants to shove her disclaimer on a perfectly good show. Blah, Blah, Blah. If you want to really see something you ought to watch a breathing treatment. I wonder if she ever had one of those. How long has it been that we have known that cigarettes are bad for you? Maybe this woman is fucking moron and that is really the problem.

  25. 25

Listen up stupid bitch…the era in which this show takes place was a booming time for the tobacco industry. Mostly everyone smoked back then. So now they cannot be historically accurate because of some bitching cancer survivor?? Fuck you and mind your own business ho. Maybe if she had some creative talent and wasn't "famous" for being a spoiled lazy housewife she would understand what creative integrity was.

  26. 26

Please-any viewer with half a brain realizes that the show offers a snapshot of the societal norms for that time period-the good, bad and ugly. Half the show would be eaten up if we had to sit through disclaimers for every unhealthy activity portrayed on the show.

  27. 27

    that's retarded.

  28. 28

Fuck her. I hope she gets her lung cancer back

  29. 29

Shut up, lady. If people today don't know that smoking causes cancer they are too stupid to live anyway. So smoke em it got em people.

  30. 30

No one likes a nanny. I do NOT want to see such a stupid, preachy, unnecessary admonition before such a well-designed, historically respectful, beautiful show. Anyway, Don Draper smoking makes me want to screw him, not smoke.

  31. 31

get the fuck out of here, People are influenced to smoke because some character on TV does it really??

  32. 32

Just wanna say….Shut up! Are you kidding..really a disclaimer? Are we retarded? We get it smoking is bad! If a tv show makes you smoke (or even want to) then you are a dumbass. Just saying..you are :) Lung cancer is bad and not funny but come on…isn't this a free country (supposedly)? Shouldn't people be allowed to smoke in a completely FAKE show? Stop trying to take away petty little rights & maybe start looking at the big picture!!! Have a good day people!

  33. 33

the ciggarettes are herbal and the drinking they do is either water or apple juice.

  34. 34

    Kathryn Joosten, IS AN IDIOT.

    Actresses should act, not think.

  35. 35

stop treating viewers like morons and stop advocating censorship

  36. 36

Please - are we a country of idiots? that woman should give us some credit to understanding the difference between a TV show and reality. I am sorry she had cancer, but we do not need yet anothe big brother.

  37. 37

Um, yearly chest x-rays will probably CAUSE cancer.

  38. 38

    X-RAYS CAN CAUSE CANCER!

  39. 39

If you are that weak and pathetic to do anything simply because you saw it on a TV show or in a film than you get what you deserve and you should just end it now. Ewwww

  40. 40

mad men is a period tv show and back then people smoked cigs more than they breathed fresh air. If people are still dumb enough to start smoking just because they see it on tv, they prob deserve to get cancer.

  41. 41

Remember it's only a movie on TV. Don't try this at home!

  42. 42

really? do they also need to warn viewers to buckle up their children and not drink while pregant?

  43. 43

What a completely stupid idea. Obviously they're depicting an era in history where it was common everywhere, making it kind of ironic with all that we know now.

  44. 44

Oh get real! It's a show meant for and watched by adults. If you are impressionable enough to see someone smoke and then do it because of that, you're a really sorry excuse for an adult.

  45. 45

Stooooooopid!! Ppl smoked in the 60s. Ppl smoke now. TV is supposed to reflect ppls lives and so should be allowed to portray ppl smoking because eh ppl smoke.
