X-Factor Admits To Auto-Tune Controversy!

X Factor bosses have admitted to using autotune to improve contestant voices in post-production!

A spokesperson for the show says:

"The judges make their decisions at the auditions stage based on what they hear on the day, live in the arena. The footage and sound is then edited and dubbed into a finished program, to deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers. When it gets to the live shows, it will be all live."

Hmmm, we don't think we're too wild on that!

Check out contestant Gamu Nhengu's autotuned performance above.

I have no idea what they were thinking. Gamu was a good singer yet they thought they'd make it sound worse by overlaying autotune on it. Note that the judges only heard the real voice but they ruined it for the audience at home. They didn't even use the right settings on autotune - just so amateurish.

what's the point of watching the show then ? autotune is so tacky.

  3. 3

All the contestents on X-factor and American Idol sound like karaoke crap anyhow - with autotune or without autotune.
Those who do sound original and standout never make it through - they're not commercial enough for the mass mediocre-satisfied idiots.
And let's face it - all the winners of X-factor and American idol are nothing short than mediocre.
So what difference does it make if they do use autotune - it's just a karaoke competition anyhow.

Hah, I knew it! The woman that sang Mercy, the crazy one, was 'tuned too. I remember thinking Hey, how'd she do that auto-tune thing?

Do they do that with Karaoke as well?

That explains why I'm so good at it all of a sudden… grumbl

  6. 6

So what? Recording artists do it all the time and they use mixers. NOTHING is 100% real today. NOTHING. Not even Celine Dion goes without a "sound check" and microphone sweetners…

  7. 7

and they dub audience applause in as well. It is a SHOW.

  8. 8

shouldnt have changed the lyric gurl……

Gamu wasn't autotuned-the producers considered her good enough. She was one of the one's who wasn't, and its one of the reasons the controversy is so big over here (england) right now-that its considered unfair to use autotune to make the rubbish ones sound as good as she does un-autotuned

The X-Factor has turned to utter fucking shit!! autotune at a singing audition… WHAT?? And that big ass studio audience that takes all the authenticity and spirit away from discovering someone who actually has a good voice…. You guys in the US are gonna be weeping for American Idol to stay on top… Simon Cowell has got way above himself with all this shit.

  11. 11

noooo she was the only one who's performance WASN'T autotuned - this is totally live :D

  12. 12

God, this bitch sounds like T-Pain

  13. 13

Re: zed123 – Ummm no. You can totally hear the autotune in her voice. She sounds like a fucking Robot.

  14. 14

all the people saying this one was completely live are obviously idiots, the auto-tune is amazingly apparent, and it's not even been done well at all!

  15. 15

I knew that 'Mercy' freak sounded autotuned! If they're going to auto-tune this shit, they could at least do it tastefully. Pfft!

  16. 16

Oh, come on! I thought it all sounded a bit autotuned when I watched it on Saturday - especially on that 'Mercy' woman..

  17. 17

That's just a total spit in the face to people with real talent

  18. 18

Re: galleon10 – sorry did you just call leona lewis mediocre? go and get your head tested love.

That sound engineer/editor should be sacked. I'm studying music technology at university, and if i had handed a piece of work like that it would 100% fail. Epically bad! they should show it how they sang it, after all it is a singing competition!

  21. 21

Terrible. The performance loses all its humanity, and the auto tune is freaking obvious.

  22. 22

Why shouldn't they present it to the viewers enhanced?!?! That's how we end up hearing it on the radio, in videos, and at concerts… Very few artists actually SING anymore… I mean, look at T-Pain… He hasn't sang a line since he became famous…but, through the magic of editing, etc…he's on nearly every artists' album, as a back-up vocal…!! Or, Britney…She basically talks her way through her songs, and then they are layered, etc…and turned into "music"…and fans eat it up–b/c of her FACE/LOOK/STORY… Music is turning into a joke–and these shows prove it!! It's more about the FACE/LOOK/STORY of the person, or their story, and NOT about their actual talent…

    robo voice idol

  24. 24

Cheryl would know all about auto-tune, she can't sing without it! Agreed about the auditions though. It's made them into a farce.

A talent contest for raw gemstones that are brought out cut & polished. Crap.

  26. @v@ says – reply to this

Some singing contest. Don't worry if you can't sing in tune. We'll do it for you. Can't have any warts as we think our t.v. show is so important. How can the voters accurately judge? Let's not bother with pitchers in baseball. Let's put a machine on the mound. Turning it off for good.

  27. 27

can we take a moment to laugh at the mercy woman?

  28. 28

    Cancel this filthy crap!

  29. @v@ says – reply to this

Autotune is just about as good as drum machines are.
