After decades of decline, the smoking rate in the United States has plateaued over the past five years!

      What a lot of smokers don't know, and frankly don't seem to care about, is how much smoking bothers some non-smokers.
      When you smoke you are polluting the air around you for AT LEAST the time it takes to finish your cigarette, cigar or pipe. The smoke can travel quite a long way before it dissipates completely. After you are finished smoking you still smell for hours.
      One can hardly go anywhere outside without running into somebody who smokes, and if you hate that smell or hate breathing in tobacco-smoke filled air it becomes quite a chore leading a normal life.
      Sure, you can tell me to just stay home, but my neighbour smokes A LOT and just doesn't care about how it bothers me. Most days I have to keep windows and doors shut because opening them fills my appartment with toxic fumes. I can only open the windows when I know the wind is blowing to the south. I am in the process of moving now, not because of my neighbour, but had the other situation not arisen I would probably have moved anyway because of him.

      I'm so sick of you hating on smokers, Perez. Do you honestly think smokers don't know cigarettes are bad for their health? We're not stupid. Yes, I'm a smoker. Does this make me a bad person? No. I take full responsibility for my smoking, no one put the first cigarette in my mouth but me. I intend to quit very soon, but not because some judgemental blogger tells me to.       I quit drinking 13 years ago. I quit smoking 19 months ago. I miss smoking. Smoking relaxed me. I will smoke again when I hit 65. !!!!

While I don't mind my friends telling me that it bothers them, I do mind being told to quit. I only smoke in designated areas and never around people I know who'd be really bothered by it. Why do you hate on smokers so much? The amount of times I've seen you post "articles" blasting celebs for having a cigarette in hand is shocking. Leave them be and get off your high horse.       Re: El loco Norwegian – I agree %100, this is not about judging or telling others what to or what not to do, but its the smoke released traveling everywhere what is really annoying, i have the same problem, cant walk anywhere now because all the sidewalks are crowded of smokers releasing all those fume clouds directly into my lungs no matter what direction the wind comes from or how fast I walk through, sooner or later i feel that toxic annoying smell, what about some kind of 'public smoking rooms' instead? where they can congregate and poison each other with out affecting anyone who makes the smart decision of not smoking?

      As much as I love you Perez, i totally disagree with this. It is not America's responsibility to make people quit smoking. I think its a violation of my right as an American. Damn it I WANT to smoke, and since I cant do it anywhere in-doors anymore (for the record I totally understand that) I don't think that America needs to tax the shit out of cigarettes like they do in New York. Its ridiculous. If I want to be a smoker, its no ones business but mine. Having the resources available to quit successfully is one thing, but forcing me or making me quit is a whole other thing. I really believe this to be a violation of my rights and freedom as an American.

      As a smoker I am honestly a little relieved smoking is becoming banned in restaurants. Now bars? That's a whole different story. But I do have the freedom to smoke outside in designated areas and also in MY car and in MY home. So for those bitching about the pollution it causes outside?       Well no Sh*t. Maybe if the government raised the minimum wage to to $9.00 an hour, and legalized other "smoking" products…green.. then the economy would boom and people would not want to smoke those nasty cancer sticks as much. As one knows, stress is a key factor as to why people smoke in the first place. HELLO! I started again this year because after finishing College I realized there were no suitable jobs available even for a summa cum laude graduate.

      Perez shut the fuck up. SMOKERS HATE being berated for smoking. It's a disease, a terrible addiction, one whose addictive qualities beat out Heroine, Crack, Cocaine (not methadone).

      And, you insensitive jerk, the study also detailed how smokers TEND to be male, poor and uneducated. You, not being any of those (except male) SHOULDN"T preach to others.

      Smoking is serious, and some of us can quit easier than others, i have been smoking since i was 18 on and off, every week i wish i could quit. I have tried almost every year to quit.

      How would it feel to have your sensibility about smoking, with a Nicotine Addiction. You'd be in hell, right? Don't knock someone while there down, it's unworthy of praise, and makes them STAY DOWN LONGER.
