Red Hot Chili Peppers Diss Glee!

Ouch!

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis says the band's music will not be appearing on Glee — ever!

He explains:

“I’ve seen a picture of the Glee thing, but I don’t know what it is really. Generally speaking, that doesn’t excite me. Nothing against Glee or any of those American Idol type shows, but you know … music that is near and dear to our hearts and the people we wrote it for and play it for, it doesn’t make sense to be seen in a television format. It seems emotionally displaced.”

Thoughts?

i'd have to agree with his argument of emotional displacement. he clearly stated he wasn't trying to diss the shows so i dont even know why you are blowing it up as if he said something explicit and profane.

  2. 2

can't really blame him - I wouldn't want my music on a show that seemingly caters to pop stars which this group isn't.

  3. 3

Chili Peppers are too cool for Glee anyway. Glee would only butcher it just like they did with Journey. Arseholes.

  4. 4

    That show sucks anyways

  5. 5

he's obviously misinformed as to what Glee is. Does he know that it's a sitcom? not a reality show? he seems a little bit ignorant and should inform himself before answering questions related to things he knows nothing about.

  6. 6

    Hey Perez, can't you read?
"Nothing against Glee or any of those American Idol type shows"
he doesn't say these shows are lame or trash or whatever.
    He does NOT diss them…

  7. 7

He's right on. I'd lose respect for the Chili Peppers if they did some asinine television show. They belong on stage, not on the smalls screen. Save that for pop acts.

  8. 8

    Kudos!! An artist with integrity!!

  9. 9

The fact that he said this without even looking into it just seems ignorant to me. Glee allows an audience to connect with a song through similar experiences. Don't knock it until you try it, RHCP.

  10. 10

    Has been!

  11. 11

Perez, I don't think he's dissing Glee. He just doesn't want his music to appear in a televesion show and that's his right.

  12. 12

Oh wow, somebody has an opinion?

  13. 13

He said "nothing against Glee" so I don't really think this is a diss. There's nothing wrong with what he said. I'm a huge Glee fan, but I can see his point.

  14. 14

I love the Chili Peppers and I love Glee. He may not understand what Glee is all about, but he has a right to keep his music out of that scene. I don't think he is dissing Glee.

  15. 15

    he's totally right.

  16. 16

It's RHCP!! of course they wont put their music on Glee…. they shouldn't mess with Rock legends, they have gaga, Britney and Madonna…..

  17. 17

Good for you, Anthony! Glee is a great show but the RHCP music is not a good fit.

  18. 18

I love RHCP, but I don't think he should knock it without actually having watched it. I don't think giving rights to your music makes you a sell out. I think it expands your craft to new audiences.

  19. 19

I think he's gonna regret it

  20. 20

I saw A. Kedis wearing Crocs. He's not that cool.

  21. 21

he's absolutely right. I only disagree with him not dissing these shows. they're stupid and do nothing but spit out pop pablum for the shitty masses.

  22. 22

I think this guy knows his audience. And we aren't Gleeks. Good for him. Glee needs to stick with the pop stuff.

  23. 23

Seems a little full of himself. Did Glee ask for his music? Probably if he had been approached about lending his music to Glee he would know that it is nothing like American Idol. And what is wrong with exposing the music of RHCP to a whole new audience?

  24. 24

Don't like Glee (especially Lea Michele), won't watch it even if Chili Peppers were featured.

  25. 25

Sorry, Perez, you probably don't understand "artistic integrity" very well. I mean, to you, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera and Justin Beiber are Artists…..Right? Riiiiiiiight.

  26. Sane1 says – reply to this

    26

The emotionally displaced thing is a valid point. I just wonder if he really knew what it was and how it would showcase his music to a new generation and bring in lots of $$$, would he still think that way? I say the guy has some 'splainin' to do to anyone who might benefit from that deal….

  27. 27

    GOOD!
enough of mixing REAL talent with teenage crap.

  28. 28

How is this a diss? It's their music and they have the right to decide which outlets it plugs into. If they feel it isn't the right thing for it, then you should respect it.

  29. 29

The Chili Peppers made it big the old-fashioned way, by hard work. Thank you Anthony Kiedis for not selling out to Glee or similar shows for many reasons. I think these shows misrepresent the what is really required to make even a modest living as a musician or singer. They make people want, or even expect, instant fame as an artist. I've had enough of this type of deception.

  30. Thor says – reply to this

    30

I tried watching this show and only last about 5 minutes, it was like nails on a chalkboard!!

  31. 31

Actually Glee and American Idol are pretty similar. It's Karaoke. Lesser artists singing someone else's song.

Why would he want someone butchering music that he worked hard to create?

  32. 32

Glee sucks and so does Mtv.

  33. 33

Thats the coolest thing RHCP has done since Freaky Styley IMHO! Im glad REAL artisits are giving Glee the cold shoulder!

  34. 34

so right you are Mr. Kiedis!

  35. 35

    He is hot!!!

  36. 36

He's just jealous that the Chili Peppers aren't relevant anymore.

  37. 37

I totally agree, which is probably why I don't watch Glee or American Idol. I want to hear the song I love by the artist who wrote it, not a close facimile thereof - or even worse, someone slaughtering it.

  38. 38

It seems like he thinks Glee is a reality show like AI. I totally get why artists don't approve of AI because it is just a karaoke contest, but Glee is a musical in tv format, something else entirely. I definitely think Glee can be really stupid sometimes, but it can be a really good show and I don't think there's any reason for an artist who really knows what the show's about to mind if their songs were used.

  39. 39

Thank you, Anthony Kiedis!!! … and, yes, even though Glee is not in the same category as American Idol, they both use talented songwriters/musicians' songs, and just do another version of them. He's saying 'NO' to the cheesy exploitation of their music… GOOD FOR HIM!

  40. 40

Good for him! I'm a huge Chili Peppers fan and have never actually seen Glee, but I can't imagine the music being used in that format. Don't they usually use bubble-gummy pop music?

  41. 41

He has a point….kind of like tunring the songs into elevator music.

  42. 42

    well said

  43. 43

Wow, good for him. Some groups/singers would be appropriate for Glee, but not all. At some point, Glee will run out of popular artists. I think they should focus a lot more on the types of songs done by typical glee clubs, anyway, but they would probably lose a chunk of audience.

I don't see this as a diss to Glee, though.

  44. 44

he's just pissed that they probly haven't asked him to do any of the chili peppers music - i mean come on now - the only people who don't know about glee and what it is are fetus's - quit your crying kiedis!

  45. 45

Re: 88ary88 – It does. I don't get the hype.

  46. 46

Lame. I have always been a fan of the Chili Peppers and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but get your facts straight, my sock wearing friend.. Glee is NOT an "American Idol" type show. Artists should be honored to have their music on Glee.

  47. 47

Hes right, Glee is a lot like American Idol, its karaoke in sitcom form, for the mindless masses.

  48. 48

I agree, it sucks! You fans have been duped by it.

  49. 49

all he said is he didnt want his music on tv!!! its not just glee and american idol, is everything else too.
he's a rock artist he's music is meant for live venues, for people who connect with their songs and their experiences… glee and american idol and other shows of the sort are not authentic, they dont deal with the struggles of rock bands trying to make it, or drugs, alcohol. The rchp have been around for yearssss and for anyone whos ever paid attention to their songs they will know about the struggles they've had, i love glee but i totally get why he wouldnt want his music on tv shows

  50. 50

he's right. i wouldn't want to their music performed in the theatrics that is glee. that show is for pop music.

  51. 51

hmm, well like he said he doesn't know anything about it, so how is he in a position to make public statements about it? As a fan of BOTH RHCP and Glee I think Anthony should have said nothing. If you know nothing about a topic, you just kind of look like a dick making comments like this. Also like to point out there are some Artists who HAVE featured on Glee that have been around longer than RHCP, and have earned far more than they have, so what doe he have to say to those artists.

  52. 52

Thank you Anthony Kiedis, so refreshing to know that there are musicians out there with dignity!

  53. 53

I have to agree with him.

  54. 54

and get rid of this Related Stories bs and the Ad that's always popping on your front page it's getting really annoying. I'm starting to hate your site because of these ads!!

  55. 55

Chili Peppers & Anthony know and remember when music was sacred! Props and doubles to ya, my friend, you have always been stand up.
    ________
He, and his band, have always done right by the music and their fans.

  56. 56

IF someone is so ignorant as to give an opinion about something that they "really don't know what it is" and speak "generally" about a show that does exactly what he's describing when it comes to love for music. As for the songs being sung for fans, well, I'm a fan.. of both RHCP AND GLEE. I think if he actually took the time to understand the message of GLEE, he might not have turned it down. But hey, be ignorant, and sit on your high horse..

  57. 57

When is the last time RHCP have had a hit? Most of their songs are starting to sound the same. They may want to be on Glee. They suck live anyway. Foo Fighters are way better.

  58. 58

I dont even know what the fuck glee is, ive never seen it in my life and will never see it

  59. 59

    noooo

  60. 60

ummmm how are Glee and AI related? There not…i love RHCP and Glee…so…apparently he needs to reevaluate his fan base

  61. 61

Wow, maybe the world isn't going to shit. It's nice to see *some* people be able to retain their dignity and class.

  62. 62

Thank god Anthony is smart enough to stay away from the Glee stuff. I'm a RHCP fan and I would hate to see a show like Glee ruin their songs. I don't get what the big deal of this show Glee but it reminds me of the high school musical type of stuff that's hip one day and the next nobody really cares.

  63. 63

    I love the RHCP!

  64. 64

    Re: mindoro33

He's not a "has been" you stupid cun*t.

  65. 65

To all of those who think he's "ignorant" or "uninformed"…he said "Nothing against Glee or any of those American Idol type shows" because he's obviously been approached by A.I. to use RHCP music and has denied them in the past. He is not putting Glee in the same category as A.I.

I love that he's not selling out! Either way, the meanings behind the songs written by RHCP are very dark (dealing with death & drug addiction) and that in no way fits with what Glee represents and the audience they cater to. They would just totally butcher the meaning behind their music whose lyrics are very near and dear to band members

  66. 66

Yea Glee doesnt deserve Rhcp's music. Theyd kill it

  67. 67

He's completely spot on. He's too aware that 99% of "music" performers today are talentless hacks singing a song to some ridiculous "beat" that a 10 year old could come up.

  68. 68

Re: RedRaider18 – trust me, retards watching Fox at 7 pm isn't their audience. Glee destroys songs. The show is crap. I don't even know how people actually watch the entire episodes.

  69. 69

I don't think he's dissing Glee at all I think he's a bit naive to what the purpose of glee is…. and glee has enough offers of music that they don't need this band.

  70. 70

Kings of Leon, not RHCP. Seems not actual good artists want to give in to glee.

  71. 71

Why would Glee want their music anyway? It's not their style at all. Kind of a stupid story. It's like me worrying that Ryan Phillippe might want to use me sexually, when we've never met and in all likelihood never will.

  72. 72

He raises a pretty valid point. I mean I dont watch any of those shows.

  73. 73

Oh No! We wont have to waste an hour listening to talented kids sing the same tired, old, boring songs about california. Good!

  74. 74

Re: Bushwack – I know! Good job for not selling out and remembering what music is really about. Perez, Stop trying to start drama.

  75. 75

I'm confused by some of the comments on this saying he's ignorant. He didn't really give any opinion, posititive or negative, towards Glee, he wasn't even specific in saying he didn't want his music to be on Glee. He said he didn't want his music to be on ANY TV show, is he being ignorant of all TV shows? I don't really think he meant that Glee and AI are the same in that they're both reality TV shows, rather that they both re-do songs done by previous artists - and he doesn't want to be a part of that. What's so bad about that?

  76. 76

Unless The Red Hot C P wrote the songs they are doing the song writer a disservice. The song writers would of gotten money for the use of the songs "Glee" used. Also if RHCP songs were used in "Glee" it would expose them to a new audience and grow their fan base. I am sure most Gleeks never herd of them anyway

Chances are RHCP fans are not Glee watcher anyway.

  77. 77

    He is 100% right.

  78. Kibs says – reply to this

    78

Re: mindoro33 – haha the RHCP has beens? PLEASE! Never. They are classics and anthony keidis is a lyrical genious.

  79. 79

Re: barkersmovies – RHCP definitely do write all their own music and lyrics. Also fans of RHCP all know that they don't really wish to put their music in tv shows or movies for any reason, while it has happened in the past once or twice they made the decision at some point that they don't like it. Thats fair enough in my opinion. I know you're saying that its fair enough too so i'm not trying to have a go at you here, just wanted to let you know they write all their own stuff.

  80. 80

    I agree…….. that show sucks!!!

  81. 81

Re: barkersmovies You are joking right???? I hope to god you are, everyone knows they write their own music. Just wow, this comment is just so ignorant.

  82. 82

Re: Tania1 – He is not full of himself, someone obviously asked a question about if they would lend their music to the show, which everyone has been asked and no one jumps down someone's throat when they say yes even though they haven't been asked. Glee fans are pathetic, I don't even dislike the show, I think it's ok, but if someone didn't want to be a part of a show I loved I wouldn't rip them apart like most these comments. It's pathetic.
Re: onearmedscissor – I completely agree, people actually think he is comparing AI to Glee, which makes me sad knowing how stupid some people can be. They meant they wrote their songs for their band and fans and do not want the performed on TV, especially on shows that are purely pop music. It's a different genre completely and the rock sound would be completely absent. And honestly I am still mourning the butchering of Don't Stop Believing and a few other great songs.
And if Glee viewers don't know RHCP then I am surprised and sad, but they certainly don't need Glee to give them exposure, that's just laughable.
And their songs aren't all about California. Someone not being offensive about the show gets ripped apart by people who don't even know their music, their impact on rock(sorry you all only like mainstream pop), and even how long they have been around.
At least other people here seem to understand.

  83. @v@ says – reply to this

    83

Just the WORD 'Glee' alone might be enough to make a rocker wear garlic.

  84. 84

Red Hot Chili Peppers and Glee? Sounds awful! Good for you anthony!!!

  85. 85

He said "no" as nicely as possible, what are you doing trying to make this dramatic. Stop that.

  86. 86

    Reminds me of American Bandstand

  87. 87

Good for them but why do I care? I´ve rather to listen to Sting, Bon Jovi, Maroon5, Linken Park, Bee Gees, Stevie Wonder and ABBA. RHCP songs capitalize more about drugs and sex seems they don´t have any idea composing a song outside that subject. I don´t hear Ryan Murphy and co. asking them anyway. So why raise the issue?

  88. 88

That's fair enough. But lets be honest, Glee has never claimed to be in the same league as RHCP, I dont think they could ever really be compared in that way. Glee has only ever struck me as a fun, happy show, which is meant to lift your mood and never really takes itself to seriously. There's obviously no true emotion because its a tv show, they are all acting.

  89. 89

Well good cause your music has sucked since Blood Sugar Sex Magic anyway!

  90. 90

been a long time since his music was any good anyway

  91. 91

I love RHCP, one of my favorite bands of all times, I also love Glee -go figure- at first I wasn’t very much into the idea of watching it, but when I finally did I loved it inmediately, I love the stories, love the music, love Sue Sylvester, love the kids, love everything about that show… having said that, I have to say that I totally agree with Anthony, I don’t want Under the Bridge to be singed Glee style… I couldn’t bare the pain of hearing/watching The Rolling Stones’s You can’t always get wat you want, Aerosmith’s Dream On, and don’t even get me started on The Door’s Hello I love you, same goes for Highway To Hell, eventhough those last too were very good versions I couldn’t help but feeling that those songs didn’t belong there… Glee can choose a gazillion of pop/show-tunes, there are a lot of them out there, we have plenty of Madonna, Gaga, Britney, Cher and everything else and we all will enjoy them very much, I definitelly will; so please, pleeeeaaassseeee stick to your thing and leave rock n’ roll to rock n’ rollers!!!

  92. 92

just like Lou Reed, he is exercising his right for his music not to appear in a show that he doesn't want it appear in…end of

  93. 93

Re: Avalen2010 – Then you obviously don't know a lot of RHCP songs…
Re: onearmedscissor – it happens all the time: some people read the title, are offended straight away, read the first and last line of the article and start writing. It's not a diss - at all.
