Today is a sad, sad day in the world of daytime television!

The final episode of As The World Turns airs today, after a 58 year run, including 4 years on the radio, and 54 years on TV. Wow!

The show debuted in April, 1956, and has been a staple of American culture for decades.

Here's a statement about the show's ending by CBS' Senior VP of Daytime Programming, Barbara Bloom:

"The true legacy of 'As the World Turns' will be the fictional characters and stories of a small Midwest town that resonated every day with millions of viewers over multiple generations, becoming a treasured daytime institution in the process."

Still kind of hard to believe that this legendary soap opera is ending. Even if you didn't watch the show…it's still a tough reality to accept!

How do U feel about the end of As The World Turns after 58 years?

Sad, altho I was not a regular watcher. It was always on when you wanted to sit and veg.
Guiding Light as well. I think the writers killed both shows.

  2. 2

The first 8 minutes are over and I am crying like a baby. It is sad to see the end to my great hour a day of being absolutely entertained mindlessly.

  3. 3

Great show … amazing how long it's been on …

  4. 4

My mom has listened on the radio and watched on the TV this show since the beginning.
While she's "sad" to see it go, it was time.
Sadly, the era of the soap opera is coming to an end.

This is one of my grandmothers favorite shows i never realy watched it but it is sad that it is ending after all of thoses years

  6. 6

I'm actually kind of sad. I've been watching this show with my mom for pretty much my whole life, and she watched it with her mom for her whole life, so were talking about a multi-generational tradition dying. It's a pity such an historical part of TV has to end. Whether you like soap operas or not, 58 years is impressive.
Try and top that crappy television of today.

"As The World Turns" was a tradition and a staple that never should have been canceled. It was an escape from the rigors of life, a way to laugh and cry with fictional characters, and a reminder of ways to improve or change our own lives. Tradition is important. Cheers to a great show.

My Mom is so upset… very sad. And they had a great gay storyline as well!

  9. 9

The only time I seen this show was in my childhood… whenever there was a snow day or I missed school, my mom would be watching this.

    SO SAD :( R*I*P

Breaks my heart. Have watched it my whole life with my Mama. Will miss it!

So sad for it to be ending, have been watching this show for over 20 years with my mom. I have been crying all week! LOL But it is very sad!

  13. 13

I hope they lower the prices of my toilet paper & tooth paste since they won't be advertised on this show anymore!

I'm only 27 but my mom and I watched ATWT and Guiding Light since I can remember. I use to set my VCR to tape it while at school. My mom and I every evening would sit down and watch it together. Hell, I remember in college we would all schedule our classes around the time and my roommates and I would all sit around and watch it together, guys and girls. GL ended last year and now ATWT :( It's hard to say goodbye to shows you watch 5 hours a week for your whole life. I don't remember a time I didn't watch them…sad day in daytime TV.

My Grandmother watched this show from the very beginning until her death at 81 years old. Then so did my Mom. So for all my life at home I watched it with her when I was home sick from school or everyday in the summer. Then I also watched it when I went away to college. While I haven't watched it in many years, there was a comfort there just knowing it was on at 1pm everyday with the same people etc. It made me extremely sad and I was surprised how sad I felt to watch the last show today…..makes me just realize that time is passing and the end of a tradition of the 3 generations in my family. Soon there will be no more soaps.

    Who gives a shit

  17. 17

my grandmother watched ATWT since my mother was a baby, and I started watching it at 14. We will both miss this show greatly! Screw the game show that is taking it's place!

  18. 18

SO SAD. I watched it w/ my grandma as a little girl and would periodically catch back up over the years. Great show, great characters…such a sad day when an iconic show like that is being replaced with another stupid game show. I think they shoudl have moved it to the soap channel! Atleast Maura West will still be on daytime at Y&R. If only they could bring Jack back! CBS has/had the best daytime!!!

To the ATWT fans, I'm truly sorry for your loss, and I understand. GL was my favorite soap and there was a mourning period. . . but in time, it does get easier.

I know it sounds like a joke, but I spent 30+ years, 5 hours a week, in the lives of those people.
I watch old episodes on Youtube sometimes when I miss it.

I followed Nuke storyline. So sad to see how it ended. Writers are, really, douche-bags! I expected, at least, some little, hidden, sign Luke and Noah will be together again…

As far as other characters, I really hope they didn't get end that Luke and Noah got…

  21. 21

I followed Nuke storyline… Writers are, really, douche-bags! I expected, at least, some hint Luke and Noah will be together eventually.

However, I thought ATWT is a good show, at least by some appearances byt other characters in Nuke storyline.

I am going to miss watching it.

My granny watched all of the CBS soaps. She even schedules doctor appointments so she'll be home to watch the Young and Restless. She says nasty thing to Victor when he's on the screen. I try never to go to her house in the daytime because you can't talk to her when the soaps are on.

i am absolutely heartbroken. i sobbed for an hour today. thank you so much for acknowledging this on your site. it makes me feel a little better to know that at least it's not going to go off the air silently. Goodnight Oakdale. I love you.

  25. 25

It's just RIDICULOUS for a show to last 60 years!!!!

  26. 26

I only started watching this five years ago, but fell in love with this show. I can't believe it's off.

Truly the classiest of all the soaps on daytime TV. So many of the characters on ATWT have been on since almost day 1: Bob, Lisa, and the late, great Nancy. I loved and miss GL too. It's really sad to see this happening. In a few years there will be no daytime soaps left. Watching the last episode today was like saying goodbye to a dear friend who was always there for me, even when I wasn't always there for my friend. I will miss this show most of all.

  28. 28

I'm so pissed off. I love ATWT. I will miss it and furthermore, I'll miss Luke and Noah.

  29. 29

Sucks!! This soap was my favorite. I hate B & Beautiful and Y & R. They should have gotten rid of them and kept As the World Turns !!!!!!

  30. 30

I watched ATWT my whole life. It's going to be weird to not have weeks worth of episodes on the DVR waiting for me. I just wish they had ended the Luke and Noah storyline better. I get that Luke was grieving because he lost Reid and it was a nice scene with him listening to Reid's heart in Chris's chest… But they could have fast forwarded to a few months in the future and had Luke reunite with Noah.

  31. 31

So sad my mom and grandmother watched this soap. Sad day in Soap history. Whose next?

  32. 32

Re: Whoaaa – Don't blame the writers on this one. If anyone SHOULD be blamed, it's Executive Producer Christopher Goutman. He's been brought in to executive produce 4 different shows, and all 4 shows have failed rather badly under his reign. ATWT is just the latest victim.

  33. 33

CBS sucks Last year they killed off The Guiding Light and now As The World Turns. Then they will replace them with total shitty shows that no one wants to watch.

  34. 34

I had been pretty sad about this going off the air. I have watched it for 20 years, since I was in college when I had an old tv set that only got CBS!

However, one of the best things they every did was bring Eric Sheffer Stevens on an Reid Oliver. I am straight woman and I loved his scenes, before we knew his character was gay and even more after! The fact that they killed him off made me so much less sad to see the show go. They should have killed off that douche Chris. His character was so blah.

Anyway, I had hoped Lifetime would pick it up but not to be!
