Bono's Charity Gets Skewered!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooBono

Bono's nonprofit ONE Campaign is in big trouble after sending boxes with pricey items to press advocating President Obama giving $6 billion to the UN's Swiss-based Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa.

The boxes, which were delivered individually be expensive messenger, contained a $15 bag of Starbucks coffee, a $15 Moleskine leather notebook, a $20 water bottle, a plastic ruler, a black and white cookie, small tin of Band-Aids and two syringe-style pens.

Kimberly Hunter, spokeswoman for ONE, said:

"Sometimes it's pretty hard to get through to reporters with the information about the lives of the world's poorest people. We think it's important enough to try and break through the clutter . . . That's why we sent the boxes."

Considering that Bono's nonprofit took in $14,993,873 in public donations in 2008 and donated only $184,732 to three charities, it's pretty suspicious.

ONE answered by saying that it "does advocacy work, not charity work." Yet, $8 million was spent on executive and employee salaries.

WTF are they good for?! We want some answers, Bono!!!

    3

Not a big surprise, he came into our restaurant with his huge entourage and dined like a rock-star on his charities expense.

  4. 4

This sounds like a bullshit organization.

  5. 5

The US doesn't have $6 billion right now. However, it sounds like ONE has $14 million+ and some cool goodie bags they could send. That's a start.

  6. 6

    180000? how embarassing

  7. 7

what do you expect from the worlds' biggest piece of shit?

  8. 8

    daaaammmn! mofo got old.

  9. 9

Those Non-Profiteers & Poverty Pimps sure do take care of themselves!

  10. 10

8 million to employees and executives? Lemme go work for them really quick.
This is why people need to look closely at who they are giving their money to. Most charity networks have to tell you exactly how much actually goes to the charity and how much goes to everything else.
People would be amazed at just how little is actually being used for the cause.

Hang your head in shame Bono!

  12. 12

My husband is so fucking right, he always tell me dont give money to those celebrities " charity", they are ALL scam.

I am disappointed and ashamed for Bono.

  13. 13

That is a PATHETIC amount to have given to charity. Wow…scam.

  14. 14

    A disgrace….

As the founder of a small, all volunteer nonprofit www.leapingstone.org I am once again saddened and angry at the "celebrity" nonprofits. They bring in millions and spend it on staff salaries. We work hard for no money to try to make a difference in the world. Their recklessness ends up painting all nonprofits as irresponsible.
If you look at our blog you can see exactly where the money we raise is spent. No perks, no salaries.

quit buying project RED products until a better accounting of the money is provided. U2 made enough money hat he should not need to use the organizations funds, if in fact he is.

  17. 17

This is so sad. I'll never see Bono in the same light again. What a fucked up scam.

  18. 18

That's what bothers me about Bono. He goes into other countries saying they need to give billions to poor nations and yet he isn't even doing the same. He's just doing it for a fucking photo op.

    How's that for 'advocacy' work?

  20. 20

So basically this fuck wit is taking donated money and its paying for his luxurious lifestyle? Cool..Isn't that illegal?

  21. 21

Dear political retards…sending small, inexpensive gifts to the White House, administration and congressional offices is a regular part of Washington life. As long as the gifts cost less than the amount (usually around $50) established by government ethics panels, it is allowed. Everyone does it from big pharm to non-profs.

    What the…?

From their website: "ONE is a campaign and advocacy organisation with more than 2 million members committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. Cofounded by Bono and other campaigners, ONE is nonpartisan and works closely with African policy makers and activists."
They lobby with governments and create campaigns to raise awareness about several issues- and of course they have to pay the people who do that work. I don't think ONE was founded with the aim of giving money to charities. Product (RED) was, but that's another project than ONE. Bono is involved in both.
