The man behind the band's namesake has passed away.

Leonard Skinner was the high school gym teacher to one Gary Rossington who would one day grow up to play in a band called Lynyrd Skynyrd. Back in the day, he had a no tolerance policy for boys with long hair and sent Gary to the principal's office for keeping it as such.

On Monday, the retired teacher, who is son says was always gracious to fans who wanted to meet him, passed away from Alzheimer's disease in his nursing home. He was 77 years old.

Very sad.

Our condolences go out to his family, friends and fans who are feeling his loss today.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the greatest bands of all time. Mr. Skinner came to embrace his namesake band and introduced before a show once. It sad that he had to suffer with alzheimers. Rest in peace Mr. Skinner.

Besides spell checking, you need to fact check. You don't die from Alzheimer's.
