Poor guy! He's been through so much!

Michael Douglas is continuing to discuss his very serious battle with throat cancer, and reveals that he thinks a lot of it was brought on by stress!

He explains:

"This type of cancer can be brought on by alcohol and tobacco abuse and by a certain type of sexually transmitted reason, but I look on it as stress. I've had a pretty stressful year on a number of fronts, some of which were public and some of which weren't."

We think we can all understand - between this and his troubled son Cameron's recent drug-related prison sentence, he has been through a lot.

We're all thinking of you, Michael. Stay strong!

wasn't he a heavy smoker, drinker and an admitted sex addict?

  2. 2

did he really say that?? stress caused throat cancer?? i surely hope he means the stress caused him to drink/smoke which in turn caused the cancer. and wft is a "certain type of sexually transmitted reason"???

I do feel bad for Michael Douglas, but I would be surprised if stress was the only problem here. About 10 years ago I knew someone that had throat cancer & from what I understand there is a huge predisposition to it if you smoke, drink, and then also drink coffee. I am not seeing he deserved this at all, and we all have our vices and weaknesses so I am not going to point a finger. I hope he gets better and gets to enjoy his family. Nobody deserves this at all. Can you imagine how much this hurts? I hate to even have a sore throat. Poor man.

Yeah, don't blame the obvious thing: smoking!

What a total JERK! He was an AWFUL father, his son had an addiction and now he's blaming his son for his cancer. Dick!

  6. 6

Not to mention a money grubbing X-wife.

He was a smoker for years. Sounds like denial - easier to blame external factors than take responsibility for willfully and knowingly abusing your body.

Re: rosebud99 – Absolutely right! He smoked cigars for years. He was on the covers of magazines, posing proudly, speaking of his love for them. You don't inhale the smoke of cigars. Cigars, like chewing tobacco, are know to cause oral (mouth) and throat cancer. The sexually transmitted disease Douglas spoke of is HPV or human papillomavirus. What's amusing here is that he really DOESNT have to say anything. Put 100 people in a room and 91 of them will have a relative or close personal friend that has been diagnopsed with some form of cancer. He has chosen to try in justify his personal behavior and it's kind of sad.

This is just cleverly placed "news" to coincide with the opening of his movie; look at all the free press he's getting.

I can't believe anybody buys this crap.

This is the wrong time to throw stones at Michael Douglas. Many people have cancer and there is no explanation, it just hapens. Just like TB in the old days. I'm praying for Michael, he has young children who need him, his older son also. Good luck. Also I've always found hin to be an excellent actor, never afraid to be with a strong woman partner and not feel macho at all. Congratulations for that Michael. My favourite movie: Coma, see the video. In it he is married to a strong woman and accepts to give her all the space she needs.

To the person who wrote this post:
Exactly what is "sexually transmitted reason" ?
I would love to know how reason can be sexually transmitted.

Wow! You're a genius! You figured out that Michael Douglas developed cancer in order to promote his movie.

Stress can exacerbate the effects of throat cancer, cause it to spread more quickly. He didn't mention that certain kinds of mold can cause throat cancer. Doesn't matter if you're still smoking, quit years before, or never smoked in your life… To be stage 4 he's had the tumor for quite a while. It surprises me that he had no signs what so ever that there was a problem, my mom would choke on fried or seasoned rice. She didn't realize she was sick until her was well into stage three and had moved into her lymph nodes. She had quit smoking 15 years before. He's putting a brave face on, he's in for a very difficult time when he gets to the end of the second week and beyond with the radiation. The usual ways the treat this kind of cancer is surgery, chemo, and radiation. Surgery is disfiguring, and you loose the ability to speak, everyone know what chemo does to a person, the kind of radiation he's receiving and likely in large doses to avoid having the surgery can completely close the throat making it impossible for anything to go down or come up the esophagus, hopefully the trachea remains open. I hope he makes it, of course he isn't revealing everything about his condition, it's a difficult cancer to watch a loved one fight and/or succumb to, and to deal with as the loved one of someone who is.

Silly, simple Stella…sometimes people lie to generate publicity.

You don't have to be a genius to know this. (It just so happens, however, that I am a genius.)

  16. 16

I was recently at a lecture from a pharm rep about the gardasil vaccine - she spoke largely about the rising levels of mouth and throat cancer caused by HPV. The larger risk of HPV to sexually active individuals is mouth and throat cancer rather than cervical cancer because so many woman get screening pap smears.

  17. 17

He couldn't possibly be that stupid. Surely that's an inaccurate quote. Cancer doesn't form over the course of a year, sir. Stress? Yes, what a stressful year, I produced a hit movie, my wife won a Tony, blah blah….I smoked and drank and stayed up late. Throat cancer can also result from performing oral sex on a woman who has HPV (at least he alluded to that with "sexually transmitted reason" (and that takes decades to show up; I believe it's what killed Michael Crichton, although I have no proof of that). Stress? That's bullshit! So your son went to jail and your ex-wife sued…the cancer was already at Stage I and II and III before it got to IV. You've been incubating and nurturing it for decades. What an idiot.

  18. 18

I suppose smoking, drinking, and contracting HPV from oral sex caused a lot of stress for him. I'm glad that even though those three things could have caused his throat cancer he realized that stress did the job. Bullshit.

  19. 19

Stress CAN exacerbate cancer - it's not a CAUSE though.

  20. 20

Anybody can have pre-cancerous cells, which can be turned into cancer with little provocation. However, when it pops up quickly like that, it can DEFINITELY be stress and negativity causing it.

Doctor's estimated my mum's cancer to be 2 years old, which went back to her losing two "sons" and numerous friends over the span of a few months. She'd had precancerous cells removed 10 years before and even her doctor admitted stress was the most likely cause of the new cancer vs. the precancerous cells.

  21. 21

couldnt have possibly been the smoking and drinking and general lifestyle or old age

  22. 22

3D glasses, a new treatment for cancer?

    23

Oh please. This happened to him because he's an older man whose drinking and smoking caught up to him. I wish him well in recovery and admire him as an actor, but let's call a spade a spade. If stress were the sole cause of throat cancer there would be a much higher incidence of it.

    first dibs on his wife

  25. 25

Being married to that cold stuck up bitch can't be fun either.
