Teen Murdered Brother To ‘Be Like Dexter’

The former girlfriend of Indiana teen, Andrew Conley, who strangled his younger brother said that he had talked about wanting to be just like TV serial killer Dexter before he committed the act.

Prison surveillance cameras also caught Conley discussing a new episode of the show.

On Tuesday, Conley read a prepared statement saying that he was sorry for killing his brother, and that he didn’t know why he did it.

This is tragic.

Do U think violent TV or film or video games can cause people to do terrible things?

no…real life influences tv and video games

  2. 2

There's comedy on television. Does that cause comedy in the streets?

  3. 3

No. That kid's just a dick who's going to ruin Dexter for the rest of us.

These people already have issues. Maybe something they say on TV or a game reminds them of their dark side, but there is usually already a problem behind it.

  5. Laury says – reply to this

Yes, but only if they're mentally unstable to begin with. Someone who perfectly stable doesn't feel a sudden urge to kill just by watching a violent TV program. That said, this is very sad and I hope that guy gets the help he needs.

  6. 6

I agree with Harliqueen, life is shit enough without having to blame tv or video games. The world needs to stop blaming other sources and start taking some responsibility for their own actions, I am sick of hearing oh he had a mental problem (yes it exists but everyone blames it), oh the video game made me do it, someone did this to me.. Its beyond a joke and will just keep getting worse to everyone wipes each other out.

blame it on a TV show…how typical.

  8. 8

Cause? No. Inspire, sure. If he wanted to be like Dexter, and he was talking about it, someone should've said something…even teens know that they should speak up when someone seems disturbed. I knew many disturbed individuals as a teen, and I always told someone - my parents, their parents, school counselors, etc…

If he wanted to be just like Dexter, it's because he is mentally disturbed and needed help. Too bad it's too late for his brother.

I don't see anything about his parents. Where were THEY? This is going to turn into a frenzy against the media - blaming TV for the actions of children (actually, he's 18, so he's an adult), when it's just ridiculous.

My heart goes out to the family of this 10 year old boy. It's sad beyond any description of words.

  9. 9

In short, YES. People with low I.Q.'s, low self-esteem, no guidance & who are uneducated are all susceptible to bad influence via violent shows & video games. If there was a balance & we could be sure that everyone was educated & read books, then there wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately that is unrealistic & the dumbing down of recent society via these medias does not help. Along w/ the unethical & unmoral decline of most folks, there is no end to this sheeple shit-headedness.

  10. 10

I think, in order for media of some sort to influence violence, there has to already be something wrong with this person where they are unable to grasp right from wrong.

  11. 11

No! you either have it in you to kill or you don't. I also love Dexter but watching it isn't going to make me wanna to kill someone, this is much deeper than a TV show. parents pay attention to your kids talk to them this just seems like it could have been avoided..

  12. 12

if he actually watched Dexter he would know that he only killed bad people…so its pretty ridiculous that he said he wanted to be like dexter.

  13. 13

I think its a cop out to say "this tv show made me do it"…..No, YOU wanted it, YOU did it, and YOU shouldve known it was wrong. Real life gives scripts to create these shows, not the other way around…..

  14. 14

People know right from wrong. TV and video games did not cause this. Conley is severely mentally ill.

  15. 15

Something on tv or in a videa game is not at fault here, more his mental state, he killed his own brother. Put him in a hospital for a serious psych evaluation. He made the choice to commit murder, ppl are alway trying to blame something or someone else. IT'S PATHETIC.

  16. 16

Lots of studies have already shown that the only people who act out like the things they see in the movies, on tv or video games already have that propensity within them.

  17. 17

what an idiot! there is a line between actual reality and fiction, he CHOSE to cross the line by committing this heinous act.

plus, does he not understand the point of the show at all?

my guess is he's laying the groundwork for an "i did it it but it wasn't my fault" defense… what a a-hole!

  18. 18

As a teacher, let me just say there are a LOT of psycho kids these days. I am serious. People cannot raise kids to save their lives these days. It's scary. I know every generation says the next is awful. I am talking about a new animal. Mark my words.

  19. 19

Um…maybe the parents should start being parents & make sure the kids understand the difference from reality & tv/video games.

  20. 20

You can't tell me that somebody like maybe his parents, or one of his friends in school didn't know he was a few bricks shy of a load. That being said I don't blame them for this, but I wonder if they saw it coming. Sometimes yes I do think there is a bit too much violence on television. I think most people can take it and there is no big deal, but then you get some nut job like this moron and they get lost in fantasy. How sad. The people that just shut Katy Perry off Sesame street need to get a life too.

  21. 21

Tv shows and video games dont kill people. Mentally unstable people kill people. Dexter doesn't even kill innocent people. He kills criminals who beat the legal system. So this kids is just using Dexter as his excuse.

  22. 22

    1. dexter only killed people who deserved it (people who murdered innocent people)
    2. there hasnt been a new episode in like 6 months..

  23. 23

Dexter only kills murderers and "could never" kill a child (his words from the show.) This piece of shit is looking for a get out of jail free card. I really hope no jury is dumb enough to buy it.

  24. 24

I think that crazy people get their ideas from many sources…sane people dont go around living out what they see on their favourite tv shows…
there is, however, plenty of mental illness in the world…one only has to watch the american idol auditions to see how crazy people are in society.

tv shows make more creative killers perhaps, but they do not create killers…killers are crafted by mental illness, or at the hands of abusive situations while growing up…not by television.

certainly though, one could argue that violent television doesnt need to be so graphic as it is today…we see enough of graphic violence in real life via the news…no need for it in our entertainment is there?

i tend to agree with the comment from the teacher, kids are bring brought up poorly today. far too much video games, not enough real life socialization and play time…not enough real life growth and learning. its damaging society as a whole…but right now we just sound like every generation that has passed, speaking of the degradation of society and the youth being to blame…
but it has been documented as a problem and a growing one at that.

  25. 25

how typical. People especially parents cannot take the consequences for their actions..Or if their kid SCREWS up they blame the media..Violence on TV do not contribute to this..Ideas? Maybe. It was horribly bad parenting or just a messed up genetic disorder.

So basically this kid was a few french fries short a happy meal way before Dexter even existed.

  26. 26

Re: nicosmashyou – Agreed. What an asshole to blame Dexter.
side note: This guy had a girlfriend? What the fuck?

  27. 27

Crazy people will do crazy things irregardless of whether or not they watch TV or play video games. People blame TV and video games because then they don't have to take responsibility for themselves. Stop blaming the media for your actions people!!! You ruin it for the rest of us!

  28. 28

most people know the difference btwn fiction and real life. There seems to be something broken in some people, like stalkers who think stars are their husbands or are in love with characters. These people are damaged and its sad that this great show is going to get shit for one crazy kid. Next there will be people thinking they are vampire Bill

  29. 29

wonder if he liked the show OZ??? because i think its going to be his life

  30. 30

"movies don't make psychos, movies make pyschos more creative."

  31. 31

millions of people watch that show and only this fucktard has used it as an excuse. crazy makes you do shit like this not t.v.

  32. 32

murders have been going on a lot longer than tv has been around

crazy causes people to do terrible things, not tv

  33. 33

The guy an idiot. If he really paid attention to the show he would know Dexter only kills murderers and rapists.

  34. 34

Re: lalalala1234 – Exactly. people kill people.

  35. 35

While we can't shelter kids from the media forever, parents have a responsibility to monitor what their kids watch and to teach them good morals. That being said some kids have a whole lotta crazy going on in their heads that they may need treatment for. If friends had heard some of his thoughts they could have maybe had an intervention of sorts with a counselor/doctor/meds

  36. 36

I live in Dillsboro Indiana which is only about 25 minutes from Rising Sun Indiana where this occurred. This has really shocked our community here cause this kind of thing just does not happen here. They found his brother Conner in the park. Very shocking for around here. I know you hear that all the time but it really does not happen here. I do not know the family personally, but have heard that the parents are good people and they are having a hard time dealing with this. I do feel very sorry for them. But I do not feel a movie or show could cause someone to do this. The person has to be sick to begin with.

  37. 37

people who are going to be violent are going to be violent whether or not they watch anything violent.
some people like to pinpoint people's actions like this to something that has nothing to do with it (like Dexter) because they dont understand why people do the things they do, and just blame the violent tv shows.
i enjoy these shows, am i violent? no.

  38. 38

No…people that are already fucked up in the head like using video games and tv as excuses though.

  39. 39

hes full of shit. Dexter killed criminals who got out of paying for crimes ALSO DEXTER STABBED HI VICTIMS not strangled.

  40. 40

No, I don't think tv or games cause this. Mental illnesses do. I grew up with parents big into video games. Lara Croft was my idol as a kid lol. I also played Resident Evil games and still love zombies entirely. But I would never kill someone, nor harm anyone. Never been in a fight either lol. Some people have mental issues where they are too easily influenced by things. Or they are just plain out crazy.

  41. 41

No NO NO Tv, Music, Viedo game ect DO NOT convience ppl to do bad things!!!! These are ppl with mental problems.

  42. 42

    Dexter doesnt kill INNOCENT people.

  43. 43

The way that mental health works is that there has to be some sort of imbalance. Someone who does not suffer from a serious illness will not kill somebody because of a tv show, movie, or song.

People murder people for a couple different reasons. I don't know the specifics of the case, but due to the fact that he said he did not know why he did it, it seems as if there was not an activating event. If his brother had attacked him, then he would say self-defense. This sort of thing makes me think there is a serious issue.

I'm talking about disorders that have symptoms like narcissism, unable to distinguish moral boundaries, does not feel guilt, etc.

Someone will not kill somebody for no reason because they watched a tv show. The only people who get ideas from serial killer shows/stories are people who are sociopaths.

  44. 44

Well if he wanted to be like Dexter then he should've followed the code -_-

  45. 45

Re: Dixie77 – Where? Where exactly should we be marking your profound words?

  46. 46

I don't think it's the show's fault, but I do wish there were more open dialogue with esp. teens about shows like Dexter. Actually, it would be really cool if the show would find a way to start something like that. Also, I wish CSI would put disclaimers at the beginning of their shows b/c Americans get called for jury duty all the time and many of them believe that every single thing on CSI is accurate and not TV magic, when CSI themselves has admitted that some of it is TV magic. I think it's dangerous to not have a disclaimer b/c the people called for jury duty are often making major life decisions about someone and often life and death.

  47. 47

No… tv and video games only help give already crazy people excuses to do what they do.
SANE people can watch whatever they want without acting out what they see.

  48. 48

This is old news. I reckon as I'm from Ohio, and it was somewhat local (i'm on the border of Ohio and Indiana) that's it's not 'breaking news' since it's been on the news for weeks and weeks now.

  49. 49

    Fry the little fucker.

  50. 50

Fiction has always inspired crazy people to do terrible things. For example, the crusades and suicide bombing.

Also, the idiot didn't even kill a criminal. It's like saying you want to be like batman and then robbing a granny.

  51. 51

well is it a surprised that 1.3 million in america are in prision

  52. 52

i do think that violent tv, film, and video games introduces children and people to things that they wouldnt normally see in real life, and may even put ideas into their mushy little sponges of brains. but all in all it really comes down to bad and good, crazy and insane. normal people watch these show and play these video games everyday without even giving a second thought to reenacting any of the violent scenes. most people have a filter, where they can think" man this guy is really pissing me off, i would just love to punch him right now." but we dont because we know the difference between right and wrong. and overall are good people. these kids who blame other people or tv for what they do are just bad people. with or with out the outside influence they would have found away to do something bad one way or another.

  53. 53

I hope this guy never gets out of jail. He WILL kill again so lets just keep him in jail. At least that way he'll not be able to kill a ten year old child ever again.

  54. 54

    Fuckin' redheads.

  55. 55

"Do U think violent TV or film or video games can cause people to do terrible things?"

No, if that were the case wouldn't we ALL be killing our family members or random people for that matter.. some people are just f***ed in the head all on their own.

    Example: This guy.

  56. 56

I am actually from a little town that is about 20 minutes from where this horrible crime happened. This boy is mentally unstable to begin with. If you read the news reports and family statements, he stood over his step-fathers bed with a butcher knife one night. I think he must have always had some sort of mental problems or was just an evil person from the beginning. One way or another, everyone knows killing is wrong. A tv show shouldn't change the way anyone feels about that.

  57. 57

Re: mariosfat Most of those people are in for drugs, not murder, dumbass

  58. 58

    this is last week news.

  59. 59

Sure they do but so does a lot of other stuff if you have a mental illness! If someone is mentally ill with violent tendencies they would have snapped sooner or later with or without violent TV! It is soooo easy to blame violent TV and music - to me it is just a faulty analysis where you choose to only focus on one factor = very unscientific

  60. 60

Do U think violent TV or film or video games can cause people to do terrible things? HELL NO! these people who go and kill other people and blame it on tv or films or games is just taking the cowards way out, to be fair though they are hardly likely to turn around and say nah it wasn't because of films or tv or video games you know i was completely fucked in the head before all this. its never going to happen, these people want to shift the blame and not take any responsibility for what they did. blaming Dexter is too easy and means this coward doesn't have to face up to the real reason he did this heinous act. the dude was already a fucking psycho before Dexter came along.

  61. 61

Well not as much as religion can do

  62. 62

Here we go again with blaming violent TV and movies for the behavior of douche bags like this kid. No way is that why this little freak killed his brother. He's either mentally ill or had a terrible home life or both. Nobody just kills because they see it on TV.

  63. 63

No. Television shows, movies, and video games cannot cause people to muder. These people make their own decisions.

  64. 64

I really don't know what's wrong with the world! Everytime some crap like that happens they blame violence on tv, movies and games that 's such a weak excuse i can even begin to people have got to learn how to take responsibilty for the shit they do.

"Do U think violent TV or film or video games can cause people to do terrible things?"
Don't even fucking TRY to get into this on your site Perez.

  66. 66

    Dexter kills criminals…

There's senate hearing on TV every week and not everyone is a senile old man sleeping ?

  68. 68

yes look up Albert Bandura's Bobo Doll study 1961-63

  69. 69

Personally, I think that violent TV and video games do play a part in these sorts of cases. We see so much violence on TV etc. that people become desensitised to it. You never see the real consequences of said violence, so you can become detached from it. Obviously there has to be a screw loose to start with, but that kind of influence cannot be discounted.

For those who say that TV and games never influence people, how do you think advertising works?

  70. 70

That's TELEVISION PROGRAMMING for yah, it has more of an influence than people want to believe.

  71. 71

Re: Harliqueen – this exactly. and this was only the trigger anyway, if it wasnt this it would be something else

  72. 72

  73. 73

I love Glee but it doesn't give me the sudden and irrational urge to break into classic rock song throughout the day…Media has been made such a convenient excuse ever since parents started equating KISS with the Manson Family. Laaaaame

  74. 74

I truly beleive shows like that do influence some crimes that occur in our real lives. The normal sane person would not be effected by watching such a show, but someone who is mentally weak or has a disorder would easily believe that he can be like Dexter and try to commit an act similiar. It obv wouldn't be properlly planned out cause he's an amateur, btu yes I think criminal shows/movies and horror movies are a negative influence.

  75. 75

  76. 76

I watched Dexter when they were showing it on CBS during the writers' strike. It doesn't make me want to be like Dexter. This limp-dick is going to ruin the damn show for the rest of us.

  77. 77

clearly his parents should have been monitoring what he was watching as well as seeing signs that he needed major help. very very sad.

  78. 78

The kid definitely has some sort of chemical imbalance happening in his head….

  79. 79

i feel your pain kid i wanna be like dexter too

  80. 80

Media violence doesn't make us more violent, it makes us more scared… even though crime is at an all time low and we have no reason to be afraid of anything unless we're already running with the wrong crowd.

  81. 81

No. I think one can be influenced, but we also have free will. If one is not declared insane by an honest, highley intelligent psychiatrist, then that person knows that they are making a choice & that choice will have consiquences.

  82. 82

Re: Scotch Love – I have to politely disagree. I know plenty of people with VERY low IQs (my husband treats developmentally diabled people & they are some of the sweetest, kindest, happiest folk. Also, as a history major, the world has always, always been violent, and for some reason humans have a peverse interest in violence. In the past that part of human nature was 'relieved' for a lack of a better term, by picnicking while watching executions, watching gladiators and innocent men & women & women being slaughtered by animals, crusading and killing, the Spanish Inquistion, etc. If anything, I believe that for the most part, violent TV shows provide a safer outlet for humans to get 'their kicks.' I don't believe the world is any more violent today than it ever was, we simply have mass media now to spread the horror. Just my humble opinion.

  83. 83

Re: Dixie77 – Wow, that's scary. And you are on the front lines. I know this isn't a popular opinion these days, but IMO only, this 'time out' and having 'serious talks' with children under, say, 8 is silly. I took a fair amount of spanking in my day. In the south they actually have something called "pick your switch," meaning go out in the yard, and find a thin branch to spanked with. Most of the time our parents would make us lay on the bed for about 15 minutes, thinking about how stupid we had been. Then, our folks would come into the room and barely touch us w/ the switch. And this isn't just my opinion. In the south, as teenagers, we all laughed about how our parents knew exactly what they were doing. Most of my friend's say "Mam", Sir," open the door for people, give up seats for pregnant ladies, and respect their parents (presuming of course, that they deserve respect). BEATING a child on the other hand, is one whole different matter. One where CPS should be involved.

  84. 84

Re: french gurl – Ah, the religious thing. AGAIN. Yes, religions all over the world can be freaken' horrible when it comes to violence. But did you know that Catholic Charities is the #1 charitable organization in the US? And no, I'm not Catholic - not by far. I think it would be fair to say that the prisons in the US are overcrowded w/ mostly gang-related murderers, murderes, drug users/sellers, thieves, rapists, pedophiles, etc.

Re: Harliqueen – That is the best side to the "TV/VIDEO GAME" debate I have ever heard. Thank you!
