Future Of Starz' Spartacus Unsure As Star Andy Whitfield Battles Cancer

Very nice to hear that Starz is involving Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield in the process of deciding the fate of the show.

Spartacus Executive Producer Steven S. DeKnight has stated that he wants to speak about the show's future with Whitfield, who has unfortunately departed from the series due to a cancer relapse.

Here's what DeKnight had to say about it:

“The two main options are to close up shop or recast. I want to talk to Andy and find out how he feels about the options. That’s obviously very important to us."

More from DeKnight:

“We’re still absorbing what’s happened. I think it’s going to be a little while before we reach any conclusions.”

DeKnight has made it clear that Whitfield's health is his primary concern. Here's what he had to say about it:

“He’s a trooper. He has a very positive outlook.”

We're happy to see the respect and care that Starz and DeKnight are giving to Andy Whitfield.

We wish Andy the absolute best, and we hope things work out with Spartacus, one way or another!

What do U think they should do? Recast or close up shop?

Either way, the show just wasn't that good to begin with.

Re: Da_Rev – What are you talking about? The show was amazing! Kept me on the edge of my seat. One of the best shows Starz has made in a while easily. You don't know good shows! :)

As for Andy's situation. I hope he can pull it through. He made an excellent Spartacus I would love to see him back on the show soon! Wait for Andy. Spartacus' fans know he will pull through, he is a strong and youthful man he can do it!!!! Don't close up shop and don't recast. Wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fans beg you!

I have mixed feelings about that. i love the show, but Andy Whitfield is the surprise. HOLY COW what eye candy. i think he has THE MOST PERFECT BODY EVER. he is Spartacus, i just don't think they can recast him

I think they should wait for him. I rather wait for him to get better than them recasting. and I don't want to lose this show its one of the best on tv right now. wish andy the best an seedy recovery. give him a while he will be back.

Besides the fact that he is so amazingly good looking, I don't think it would be a smart idea to replace Andy Whitfield. He's definitely part of what makes the character, and fans of the series already associate him with the role. If he wasn't the main, most important character in the series(he is the title character after all), a recast wouldn't have such a big impact, but honestly I don't think it should even be an option.

They shouldn't cancel the show, either. They're making a 6 part prequel-series focusing on Lucretia and Batiatus. While they give Whitfield some extra time to get his cancer eradicated, they should make another short(or full) series focused on some other characters. Between Doctore, Crixus, Ashur, Varro, Naevia, Barca and his boy-toy, they have a lot to choose from.

    so sad..prayin for him..a great show…

Absolutely wait for Andy. He made the show!! He's amazing!!!

Just rename the show "Blood and Sand: The Series." Allow the show to focus on some of the other characters while Spartacus is gone, or bring in new characters to fill the void. It shouldn't be hard to write Andy out of the series for a short while, as he is getting cancer treatments. Say that he has been sent to another arena in some other part of the country. When he gets better they can bring him back to the series.

I'm a big fan of the show, I really hope they can make the show work but I will miss Andy terribly. Hope he gets well for good this time around.

Da_Rev, you obviously only saw the first couple of episodes. The director, who directed those two, wasn't the best, and the show has a TON of characters. Thorough character development gets going at around ep.3. This turned me off at first. Just like the way the sex scene(s) were shot, but that's just the style of that director. The acting got more real as it progressed, which is bad ass because the contrast between the fanciful look of the show and the realism actually creates a sort of harmony. Watch episodes 9, 12, and 13 and then in all honesty say this show wasn't all "that good."

This show is legit. It got SO good by the start of the second half of the season and at the end it was easily among the top, say, 3 TV shows on premium cable right now. They should wait for maybe a year, tops, to see if the prognosis is good for him then, and then decide what to do from there. Otherwise, they should definitely recast because the show is too good to stop altogether.

    Close shop
He is amazing and I pray he will survive his bout with cancer.
He is a one of a kind.
I will not watch if he is not Spartacus!

Wait for Andy's return or close up shop.
I do not believe Andy can be that easily replaced (hmmm … actually I believe he can't be replaced at all). He is pretty much the icon of the show and for many fans also THE feature that makes the show with his acting, looks, talent and inspiration. He has battled cancer once already and knows what real fighting for life means, which certainly shows in his acting.
I am ready to wait for the show to return with the current cast as long as it takes (IMO a lot of viewers are) or completely give it up knowing that the well-deserved rest will benefit Andy's life and its quality.

There is only one Spartacus, Andy Whitfield!!!! I also think there are enough strong supporting characters to carry a prequel or a parallel series. I think the fact that executive producers are including him in the talks is a huge compliment to him as an actor and a man. They obviously feel very strongly about him. I hope they wait for him and Andy is ready, willing and able to return.

Very best wishes to Mr. Whitfield and his family.

Wait for Andy or finish it where it was - there is no show without him, and I don't mean to belittle the performances of everyone else involved, but it wouldn't be the same without him - fabulous show, fabulous cast - it should be everyone or no one!

  15. 15

Dang it.. Neither.. I just hope Starz will wait for him to make a full recovery, which he will, and then once Andrew is 100% to then resume on to the next season. This is an incredible show and I will be sad to see it shut down, but also don't want to see a recasting because no one can play this role like Andrew does.
