MGMT Pressured To Revamp Style After Last Album Sucked

Guess it's time to pretend that your last album, Congratulations, never happened, guys!

MGMT's record label, Columbia, is pressuring the band to change up their style, after bosses at their label as well as everyone else were unimpressed with their latest release.

Looks like they're on board to de-suckify. Here's what Andrew Van-Wyngarden of the duo had to say about it:

"I definitely think our music will change in the future because Congratulations is almost two years old now. We have some ideas and have been talking about possible directions of where to go next."

More from Van-Wyngarden:

"We are just in much more positive mental states than when we wrote Congratulations. We're less anxious. We've been looking at relationships with the label during the recording process and it's quite different this time. They'll be more involved and not give us as much freedom."

Suuuuuuuuuuuure, Andrew. If it makes the pain less strong by pretending that you're going to change your musical style on your own terms, then go for it. Whatever works!

Will U give MGMT another chance with their next album?

I love Congratulations, I think its a great album that holds up on its own. I hate when labels and fans have expectations that dont allow TRUE musical artists to be artists. How boring is it when everyone makes the same album over and over.

  2. 2

wtf … i love there music and sound because its diffrent from all the crappy music out there now a days please please dont change … fuck what everyone says you guys ROCK :) ))))

  3. 3

Yes I will give them another chance. I love MGMT :)

  4. 4

They should make whatever type of music they like and that inspires them. Artists that do that are the ones that last, not the ones that try to be trendy and popular.

I love MGMT, and Congratulations isn't a bad album, but you wouldn't know because you like cookie cutter pop music!

  7. 7

    I liked congratulations!

  8. 8

the album didn't suck perez… plenty of people liked it, simpletons like you just found the lack of in-your-face electro hard to handle! and they clearly changed their music style on their own terms last time so why not do it again? mgmt are one of the best bands out there at the moment..leave them alone.

  9. 9

I love them no matter what they do.

  10. 10

congratulations was amazing! only the people who really liked the other songs on oracular spectacular and not just kids and time to pretend liked it probably, and i'm definitely excited for the next one!

  11. 11

I will totally buy their next album, for 2 vastly different reasons:

    1) I'll give them due credit for the fantastic Oracular Spectacular.
    2) I'll give them due credit for the gorgeous Andrew VanWyngarden.

  12. 12

I love MGMT and, yes, i thought Flash Delirium was a little different from their Oracular Spectacular but I still enjoyed it :/

  13. 13

wha-wha-whaaat?!?!?!? I loved Congradulations, and I don't know any MGMT fans that didnt. So um, what the heck is u talkin' bout Perez?

  14. 14

Congratulations was a great album. If you listened to all of Oracular Spectacular, you should not have been surprised by Congratulations. I am kind of sad to hear the label wants to pressure them. Let them be who they are. Oh and of course you wouldn't like it Perez because it isn't pop crap like Gaga slups out.

  15. 15

For those who are actual fans of MGMT, not the people who know kids, time to pretend and electric feel, the fans who actually know and love the songs they don't play on the radio or tv…Congratulations is an awesome album. I just saw them in Toronto last month and it was an amazing show, my favorite concert to date:) Please dont change due to pressure from record labels…we love you the way you are

  16. 16

    yeahhh….congratulations was kind of awesome…

Just because you didn't like MGMT's new album doesn't mean that it sucks, Perez. Everyone on here knows the kind of shit music you listen to so that when a band with real creative energy comes along you don't know what to make of it. Anything remotely creative or experimental scares you, since all your stupid ass listens to is shitty pop music, you fat piece of shit.

  18. 18

Because God forbid anyone make unique, interesting music.

  19. 19

Are you f-ing kidding me?! Congratulations is BETTER than the first album. I want to know which jackass actually wrote this one… I don't even understand why people label think it's so "different" or "out there"…? I doubt that this band would sell out to get constant play on the radio. They are too good for that.

  20. 20

I hope record will die. They always intervene in an artist work. I like this band and they should stay the way they are. Itunes and internet has actually helped them (long tail theory) and they have been featured in Kid Cudi's pursuit of happyness thats how i found out about them (long tail theory).

  21. 21

I absolutely LOVE Congratulations MORE than Oracular Spectacular. In order to make money/hold down a house, they need to stupefy their music for arrogant assholes like you who like shit like Lady Gaga. THANKS, PUBLIC.

  22. 22

    news flash they always sucked

  23. 23

granted, i will still love their music and i will love the upcoming one, especially good to hear that the boys have been positive souls. BUT, reading this bullshit and reading what recently happened to Will Berman… the world can suck my fucking dick.

  24. 24

    A) Learn to check to see if a source is credible. That article was complete bullshit. Vennga Perez!
    B) MGMT is a fabulous band. Sure, they're music isn't widely accepted since it's off the beaten path, but when you give it a chance it's beautiful!

  25. 25

Um….too bad this album DIDN'T suck. Like, at all. Just because it didn't sell as well as their first album does NOT mean that it's not good! It's actually wonderful! It's different and progressive, and was a wonderful surprise from them. I am disappointed in this post >:( Lame.

  26. 26

Re: Mr TFE – So true. Clearly their record label only cares if their music makes money. I loved Congratulations! I think Siberian Breaks is such an amazing composition; it's clearly the highlight of the album. I just wish others could see that.

  27. 27

oh ok nvm, someone just said it was a shit/false article. SHIT, PEREZ. GET YOUR STUFF TOGETHER, MAN.
you can stick to your shitty lady gaga bullshit while i stick to Congratulations.

  28. 28

shut the hell up perez, don't act like you know anything about music!!

  29. 29

  30. 30

I don't believe you know anything about music. have you listened to anything other than oracular spectacular? listen to their entire album as a whole and stop searching for hit singles. idiots.

  31. 31

    I think its a great album1!!! I love MGMT

  32. 32

The way that this "Article" is written is just too irritating!

Congratulations is a far better and more complete offering than Oracular Spectacular. You really should refrain from commenting on anything other than Pop music, because you simply don't understand anything else.

  34. 34

We keep giving you chances. Believe me you have REALLY shitty days where you shouldn't have blogged at all. But, alas, we come back because everyone deserves a second chance. Except for godsakes, please, we don't need 25 fucking Lady Gaga stories everyday. Unless you have uncensored naked pics.

  35. 35

Congratulations is a FANTASTIC album. I love it! One of my faves over the past year or so.

  36. 36

Heck yea i would give them another chance because Congratulations was awesome you can't expect an artist to do the same style of music all the time. MGMT isn't Maroon 5, even though i do like them.

  37. 37

see, I am a huge MGMT fan. I loved both Oracular Spectacular annnd COngratulations. I think Congratulations is deeper and more lyric-focused, but i think all of their songs are amazing. If they get dropped by their label, it's worth it because you cant tell a true artist how to do their art. MGMT will come out with rad music, bujust like congratulations. butt stupid people like Perez Hilton wont like it. I'll be GLAD too, MGMT isnt meant for people with closed minds.

  38. 38

Article is a fake, as pointed out by a handful of folks. And… as many have said, Congratulations really is something very special. My love for it is constantly enhanced by the one dimensional comments made by bloggers playing the Pretend Art Critic game, HA HA! The path of Musical creation that has arguably led to the invention and sonic alchemy of "Congratulations" is one that we are certain this particular blogger has yet to follow. Please start with "Another Green World" by Brian Eno, the man, not the song;)

  39. 39

    Dear Perez "diva" Hilton,

I think you may owe an apology to a certain Mr. Vanwyngarden and the rest of his band "MGMT" (pronounced M-G-M-T).
See, as you continue to give this amazing, talented, young band bad press in recent months because of their groundbreaking album "Congratulations" (wat? no dance singlez? oh no'z, bad album!), you really did manage to shit the bed on this latest report, as everything you have previously reported has turned out, yet again, to really be a bad bag of tabloid piss taken out of context and completely fabricated!

  40. 40

To make a long story short, apologize to quite possibly the most talented, creative, young and aspiring band of our generation that is MGMT (Andrew Vanwyngarden, Ben Goldwasser, Matthew Asti, William Berman, and James Richardson) and clarify your recent post. Sorry that they do not "click" with the "electro-pop" tag you do dearly love. I'm sorry that ACTUAL musicians can still exist.

    Yours truly,

    - Brother Electric

Tried to post this earlier but it never got posted for some reason… hmmmm.

Anyway, seems that this is all lies. MGMT made a statement today saying this is all untrue and that they have a great relationship with Columbia. Of course, Perez won't bother to clarify this and update this post with the truth. He (they) hate MGMT.
