Sister Wives Under Investigation For Felony Bigamy

| Filed under: Legal MattersReality TV

Took ya'll long enough!

Not surprisingly, a full investigation of the stars of Sister Wives is under way, looking into charging the family with felony bigamy, which is a third degree felony in Utah. Supposedly, police in Lehi, Utah have been looking into the untraditional practices of Kody Brown and his four wives even before the show premiered on TLC.

Lt. Darren Paul of the force reveals that once they have completed their investigation, "the evidence will be forwarded to the Utah County Attorney's Office for review and possible prosecution."

Make sure to record next week's episode to add to the evidence pile! That'll sure help your case! Oh, and their appearance on Good Morning America, where Kody flat out admits he is only lawfully married to one woman.

Good luck!

P.S. - Anyone else smelling the makings of the season finale???

of course he's only lawfully married to one woman………it doesn't work any other way in the US of A you dumbass………..

  2. 2

I can only imagine your uproar if being in a committed gay relationship were considered a FELONY!
Keep waving that "equal rights" flag Perez - people are now seeing through your bullshit and realizing you only want "gay rights", not "equal rights".

  3. 3

People should be left alone to live the way they want. Gays, Bigamists, etc.

  4. 4

For all those people out there that think it is hypocritical to condone gay marriage but call polygamy creepy - here's the difference. A marriage between two people - regardless of gender - can be an equal partnership. A polygamist marriage necessitates that the women take a subservient role and see the man as their master. There are some of these marriages that occur with total adult consent, but the majority involve coercion and some involve the rape of underaged girls, and they all involve the subjugation of women. And for those who say it is a matter of faith - study the Mormon history. The religion was founded by a convicted con artist who had the hots for his neighbors daughter. Nothing 'divine' about that.

I don't understand why he can't marry how ever many people he wants. I've seen worse relationships on reality TV with one wife/husband, and he has three wives. If they can have a good relationship and they are doing what they want and not harming anyone, I don't see what the problem is. This is why we need separation of church and state.

For all the good shows TLC airs, I can't believe they broadcast this trash. However, I guess they are getting what they want; high ratings and everybody talking about it.

If you believe in gay marriage, shouldn't you believe in a consensual relationship between polygamists?

I love this show and already LOVE this family. They are sweet, kind, unique and innovative. Their lives are filled with love and I feel a backlash is going to hit the local police there if they decide to prosecute them. They are not making a mockery of the law, but instead refuse to make excuses for their lifestyle. These people never tried to get married LEGALLY they were sealed in marriage (the second two) so how the heck they are even potentially guilty of bigamy is beyond me. I feel worse though for the latest wife. It seems she was hesitant to be a part of it all (you can see that even on the first episode) and she doesn't have AS vested of an interest as the rest do (I mean no kids with the husband). I hope it all turns out well.

I am very excited about this show, and am sad that anyone would be arrested for who they are married to.

Sure, some polygamist families are not ok in my mind. Let's use Big Love as our example. The Roman Grants of polygamy are NOT ok, but what about all the Bill Henrickson's of the world? Do they not have the right to create the families they want? Just because SOME polygamists are f**ked up, does not mean all of them are, and that all of them should be punished for the actions of others.

I would never allow anyone to come into my home, and judge how my family is, or ARREST a family member for our family structure. These people deserve the same respect.

    Someone else posted this:
"A polygamist marriage necessitates that the women take a subservient role and see the man as their master."

Which is perhaps somewhat accurate. But who are you to tell a woman she can't structure her marriage and family in the way she believes in? Your beliefs are YOURS, so keep them to yourself, and leave this family alone.

Re: rosebud99 – Butt out of people's business! Your reasoning is the same as right-wing nutjobs saying that people are coerced into homosexuality, or that homosexuals will come after our children. Child brides should remain a crime, but people should have the right to be with whoever they want as long as they're all consenting adults. Your just a man-hating feminist. I'm glad your brand of feminism is falling by the wayside.

  11. 11

What I don't understand, and please help me out here, is why would anyone doing something that is cosidered illegal would actually go on TV and let the whole world know about it… I mean, what were they thinking???

  12. 12

How is this different than what Hugh Hefner does? He was married to another woman when the Girls Next Door were being filmed. You can only be married to one person in this country, and if your wife and girlfriends all agree how is this illegal? They all seem to be consenting adults…

  13. 13

They have been living this way for like 15 years and NOW the police have an investigation going. There children are well taken care of and they have a nice place and are supporting themselves. I vote leave them alone and let them do what they want. Who is anyone to judge these people. We are trying to get over the prejudice of gay rights…so get over polygamy people. I loved this show!

  14. 14

Not saying it's right, but I just find it strange that someone who is open to people judging them on how they chose to live their life, is so quick to judge others. The kids are being raised by three/four loving moms. I don't know, I can think of a lot worse things. Again, I personally don't think it's ok but to go as far as bringing up charges and possibly ripping this family apart is not ok. What would be more harmful to the children? Think of all the people in the US that believes kids should only be raised by a "mom and dad" not a mom and mom or dad and dad. If it's wrong to judge a family based on the sexual status of the parents then how is this different?

  15. 15

If they have committed a felony or Bigamy then they deserved to be punished for their crimes. It's obviously against the law and they need to respect the law of the country and state that they live within. HOWEVER, if it all proves to be false, let them live the way they want to live. What's the difference between a man with five different baby mama's, rotating the mama's when he feels like it? At least here, you see kids in a safe environment, with healthy happy, loving parents. Yea it's obvious Perez Hilton is only for gay rights, not HUMAN rights

  16. 16

I can't wait til being a fruitcake is a felony

  17. 17

Well, lets say this, If they are going to investigate him then they need to look at all the damn swingers in Utah also. He states clearly he is married legally to one and and if he has 3 others living and residing its no different than having 4 girlfriends living with you and having kids. His kids seem normal, probably more normal than most kids, parents are home for there kids and not out at the bars or seeing there parents bringing new men or women in the home. If the government spent more time on things that matter rather than invading american bedrooms, and media spent its time reporting on stories that matter and not Lindsey lohan and how great she is of a drug addict, look below and report on this

Lindsay Lohan, 24, is all over the news because she's a celebrity drug addict. While
Justin Allen 23, Brett Linley 29, Matthew Weikert 29, JustusBartett 27,
Dave Santos 21, Chase Stanley 21, Jesse Reed 26, MatthewJohnson 21,
Zachary Fisher 24, Brandon King 23, Christopher Goeke 23,and Sheldon
…Tate 27 are all Marines… who gave their lives this week with no media
mention. Honor THEM and report on this

  18. 18

Re: rosebud99 – And if that woman wants to be subserviant- LET HER. You might not like it, but denying her a choice is equally as controlling.

Of course the issue with underage girls is wrong- nobody has denied that. But this family has no underaged girls being coerced into marriage- they all chose. So who cares?

  19. 19

ok to femnazi rosebud…aren't you being a little sexist to assume that these women (or rather any woman in a plural relationship with or without power exchange) are so dumb and worthless that they can't think for themselves and make a consentual choice in regards to their relationship?
poly is not wrong. The individuals who abuse it are wrong, not every person who lives it though.
power exchange aka D/s is not wrong either, it is consentual and very fulfilling again if practiced with the well being of the partner in mind.
As I am on my phone there is not enough time for me to write everything I want to say so I will sum it up like this…
who are you people to judge someone for their differences in lifestyle or opinion. It is merely different. Not WRONG.
I implore all of you to educate yourselves on alternative relationships so you can better understand them even if you don't agree with them. It may not be something for you, but it doesn't mean that under the right circumstances and with the right intent that it is impossible for anyone to pursue.

  20. 20

Umm HELLO - if you are right Perez that he admits he is only legally married to one of the women then assuming he did not obtain marriage licenses from the state for the other two marriages at BEST he would be considered by the State of Utah an adulterer. AND if we threw every man in jail who cheated on his wife we would have jail over crowding of epic proportions.

  21. 21

Nice try, but it's spelled "y'all" as an abbreviation of you and all. I should know, I'm from the south. If you can't spell it right, please don't use it, it's just an insult to my people.

  22. 22

Yeah, you wouldn't like people saying how CREEPY it is for gay people to marry. So you need to shut your mouth! How does a man and woman being "married" affect you? Oh yeah it doesn't! If that is what they want to do, that is their business. I have never met a gay couple, and I have never met a polygamist family…so them being able to marry won't ever enter my life most likely…and even if it does who cares!!! I can't believe what a hypocrite you are. You're vile as is your family.

  23. 23

I don't know how this show got past the "development" stage without the legal issues coming into play/consideration…

  24. 24

This show was asking for it! Why would they wanna showcase their lives on television?

  25. 25

he is only legally married to one person. why is it okay for rappers and athletes to have like 10 baby mama's and these people are being bothered.. the show was actually good and these people are a happy normal family. get over it.. you expect us to support gay rights when you are slandering these people.

  26. 26

Good grief Perez, you are the dumbest of the dumb:

"Make sure to record next week's episode to add to the evidence pile! That'll sure help your case! Oh, and their appearance on Good Morning America, where Kody flat out admits he is only lawfully married to one woman." ????

That PROVES they are NOT guilty you dumbass. He could only be guilty if he actually MARRIED more than one woman. You are such a moron.

  27. 27

As long as his spiritual wives aren't on welfare to support the 14+ kids he has had with them. I don't care how many spiritual wives he has.

  28. 28

Who cares what adults do of their own free will. He does not have secret wives that don't know about each other. He does not have kids that he is hiding from his legal wife. He has not assumed some other identity in order to file for legal marriage to any other woman. These women were not molested by him at a young age, then forced into a marriage or into a family situation that they did not want. WHO CARES. Are the children in danger - it doesn't seem so. Are the women able to work if they want to and provide insurance coverage for themselves and their own kids - seems so. WHO CARES.

  29. 29

So what is wrong with this? They aren't hurting anyone, its their life, its their religion and completely harmless. So why are they being investigated simply because someone doesn't like their lifestyle? I watched this snow when it came on and while its not my cup of tea, they seem like a healthy and loving family. In comparison to most families today where we dont talk, we dont get along and we dont do anything together. So whats wrong with them? Its what his religion follows and they aren't hurting anyone.

    Re: rosebud99

This is untrue. Poylgyny refers to one man with multiple wives. Polygamy can be either sex with multiple spouses. And one woman with multiple spouses *does* exist, quite often. Are they slave driving Mistresses? What about cases where the polygamy has nothing to do with religion? What about cases where both the husband and wife have other partners, not just the man? It just isn't as black and white as you are making it seem.

The rest is directed at the post itself. Monogamy just doesn't work for everyone. Obviously he is only legally married to one woman, and anything else is just none of anyone's business. Condemning parents for not being monogamous is just wrong. If they are good parents, with a stable happy home, who cares?! We need to stop expecting anyone's relationship to be a certain way, because obviously looking at the divorce rate, the amount of single parents, mothers with multiple fathers for their children, kids not being raised by their parents at all…yeah, monogamy is really working out for us. And this isn't bashing monogamy either, because it does work for many people. This is all about personal choice. If I am feeling loved and fulfilled by two, three, four people instead of one, what does it matter, so long as I am sane, healthy, and a positive contributor to society?

  32. 32

  33. 33

I used to HATE polygamy and most of us are products of it if we go back far enough. It's an interesting topic to delve into, but the fact remains that these are NOT underage compound prairie girls. These are grown women who CHOSE this. Leave them be.

  34. 34

I think they should leave them alone!! whats so ilegal about it!! it's not like he went behind his first wife's back! It should not be ilegal!! we are not in the middle east here! and u perex outof all the people in the world should not be weirded out by this. that previous comment about you si correct, u want gay rights not equal rights!! shame on you!!! LOVE IS LOVE, RIGHT?!!!

  35. 35

    Re: Unbelievable!
I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic about that.
I don't really understand why the government is all up and arms about this. They haven't broken any laws, the welfare of the children seem to be good, they aren't harming anyone. While it might be odd to most of us they're consenting adults, they have a right to choose their lifestyle. If this is going to honestly be a bad thing, why not go fuck it and prosecute any guys and girls who go on and have multiple relationships but lie to the partners? That actually *hurts* someone, unlike this… I personally can't wait to see watch this because it's so different from everything else I've grown up with.

  36. 36

Men sleep with multiple women all the time and they are not investigated… What’s really being questioned here? These women are in that relationship by their own free will. They are not being repressed, beaten, blackmailed or brainwashed as some women are in certain polygamist sects, such as many FLDS women. I don’t honestly see anything wrong with this situation… he is only legally married to one of these 'wives' and as long as they are financially and mentally able to provide for all of the children, raise them to be understanding and have a freedom to choose either a monogamist or polygamist lifestyle for their own futures then I see no problem here. It's when men become abusive or young females are forcefully married off to older men without their consent as part of a cult tradition that I have a problem with polygamist practices.

  37. 37

Wonder if they'll bust all the other polygamists they talked about on the show and I think they even mentioned their kids go to a school for polygamist children - meaning there's a shitton of them out there!

  38. 38

Oh and no matter how anyone feels about the morality of this situation, look at it this way - it IS illegal (whether you like it or not) and they did it not only knowingly by then decided to flaunt it on television? It's almost like snubbing your nose at the law. Black and white - it's illegal, you know it, you did it and then you broadcast it for the world to see! I personally am surprised this doesn't happen to all the people on that show "Intervention" who are shooting up on camera…

  39. 39

I find it hard to understand that this is against the law - the fact that they're all consenting adults and agree to be in this situation - but something like living two lives (one family in one town, another in a different town and neither know of the other) isn't.

  40. 40

Also, Perez, how is "being born wanting to be in a relationship with multiple people" ANY different to "being born wanting to be in a relationship with someone of your same gender"?
