German MTV Going Subscriber Only!

This is a STOOPID move!

Barely anyone tunes in at this point, as it is!

MTV Germany and Northern Europe allegedly plans to switch from being a free channel to subscriber only!

Network head Dan Ligtvoet expects the move to accelerate “growth in the landscape of subscriber services,” and continues:

"I expect more growth from it. Our strategy is to offer content everywhere the users want to see it. Infrastructure providers, these being the cable networks, want to grow - and not just in terms of the content they provide. They want to be part of the growing expansion of paid TV services.”

Yeah!

Good luck trying to convince people to buy a music channel with no music, and only badly dubbed-over episodes of Date My Mom and Room Raiders on loop for 16 hours a day!

Sounds like a solid plan!

Perez, you are rarely right… but…. this time you nailed it. This will be a huge failure. I only glance at MTV because it comes along with other channels I have. This would be the same as if Hallmark went paid.. no one likes the channel THAT much to pay extra for it.

agree with u, perez - buuuut - would it be the MTV it used to be during the 80s and 90s it would be quite a shock - in that case: Who the f*** will miss it? No one's gonna pay for that crap ( I do hope so )

Last time I checked they didn't dub shows on MTV.

Scheisse!!! Love the picture Perez! So funny…I lived in Germany for 4 months, they do have shows like Family Guy on German MTV that are dubbed, but for the most part they just have subs. Either way, the German TV system and how they pay for their programming is a lot different than in the US, so who knows, maybe it'll work out. Still, if MTV were offered as a buy up on its own, I'm not sure that they'd go for it. MTV was only on in my house in the AM (which coincidentally is when the videos are on). They're usually only excited about TV if it's Soccer or German soaps. That's the stuff Deutschland pays for.

Idk if Germany uses the same MTV that is shown throughout Europe or at least the same format. If they follow the same format, from what I've seen watching MTV Europe in Israel (yes, they had MTV Europe in Israel) they play MOSTLY music videos. A few shows here and there and like NO commercials. They only air commercials for MTV. So if German MTV is anything like that, then it's not all garbage TV Shows… That's just the US

Being from germany i really have to say: that sucks! Even though i don't watch it as much as i used to, it annoys me. The more popular shows will be shown on our "other" "music" station, VIVA. For those who don't know VIVA, it is the girly version of MTV but with more "crazy frog", you know. And honestly, no one will pay for the crap they show at the moment. Their own shows like GameOne or Home are available on the internet so guess what i will do.

no biggie! MTV stops being relevant years ago… round about the time that they stopped playing music. Now they just screen vomit inducing staged reality TV starring scum. Whats cool about that. MTV u r a dinosaur charge away!

but you're right, that sucks! I hardly watch MTV now and I'm sure as hell ain't gonna pay for it. But I'll really really miss Game One…
