Facebook To Help Fight Anti-Gay Bullying

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayTech TalkLGBT

facebook teams up with glaad against anti gay bullying

This is a great step in the right direction! We're so happy to hear this.

GLAAD and Facebook have joined forces in an effort to decrease hate and anti-gay bullying on the Internet.

Today, Facebook announced that they will be seriously stepping up their game when it comes to responding to hateful speech, which violates their terms of service and needs to be removed.

Public Policy Communications Manager for Facebook, Andrew Noyes, sent out an email today, explaining how they plan to "…work closely with GLAAD and other LGBT organizations in the near future."

We couldn't be more pleased to hear that Facebook is on board. This is really important, and we're glad that efforts are being made to counter anti-gay bullying over the Internet.

Gays aren't the only ones who are bullied, you know. Anybody who is different can be bullied. You're too fat, too skinny, wear glasses, are a nerd, you're black, you're weak looking. Personally, I think one reason there's so much more bullying of gays is because the gay community has become more political and trying to force everybody to accept them, and then intimidates and threatens anyone who dares disagree with them.

    **** ..!.,

    How's about Anti-Anyone bullying?

How about straight black kids getting beat up cuz they're black? Asian kids? Native Americans? Girls just for being girls? Poor kids getting pounded on by rich kids?

Many of those victims also commit suicide because of the bullying.

Oh, yeah. Straight folks, kids, teens, adults, they don't matter. And, it's not the Cause Du Jour that'd make celebs feel like they're edgy, hip and gaining in street cred.

    **** ..!.,

That's nice and all but it should not be limited to just gay issues. ALL KINDS of people get harassed and bullied on FB and FB should shut down ANYONE who is antagonising others. It is not just a gay issue. For every gay person who is harassed there are 10 others being harassed too for other reasons - their weight, or whatever… and it ALL is wrong and must be stopped. FB should have a harassment flag feature that identifies bullies.

but if its a straight person being bullied go ahead and let them right?

WHY WHY WHY WHY… is the big united front for only GAY bullying? WHY can't it be STOP ALL BULLYING?????

Bullying is a human rights issue-not just a gay issue. It's important to remember that and stop ALL bullying.

tiggerchick - Congratulations! You've raised blaming-the-victim to an artform!

Please send me the links to all the recent stories about kids who killed themselves because they were bullied for being too fat, too skinny, wearing glasses, being a nerd, or black or weak-looking. (And that list of yours might reveal a little more about you than you wanted it to.)

Perez, I hope you'll honor your commitment to stop bullying. I know your focus is on the LGBTQ community, but, what I've found most disturbing is your need to put down people about weight. Not everyone maintains the same weight throughout their life — you've lost a lot of your weight, but don't think that you'll never gain it back again. I'm a woman who's weight has varied over the years. Last year, I gained more pounds than ever before due an injury I sustained to overly strenuous exercising — trying to maintain a weight that was honestly too low for me. I was bedridden for a month, and took steroids and other meds that stimulated appetite. I'm now able to exercise again, but it's limited. Are there lazy people out there who don't try? Of course. But there are many more who had a healthy weight and it changed, and in my case, it was b/c I was trying to be as thin as possible. I've been esp. frustrated by you w/your aversion to "fat" (w/exceptions like Beth Ditto). I've found your messages disconcerting and damaging, and I'm sure younger readers may not have the maturity or resources to see past the pressures of what you put forth, combined w/the images manufactured by the fashion/entertainment industry by Photoshop or other means. It's unreasonable to expect normal people to live up to these standards.
PLEASE consider making a statement about stopping bullying about weight — it's out there, it's just as real and harmful as what many LGBTQ persons have had to contend. I applaud your decision to make the change, and to make it right. I want to see you be part of the solution too. You're on the track to doing the right thing. Submitted with great sincerity.

Wow. I guess no one cares about those damn straight kids. Forget about the straight kids that get bullied. Its all about the gays.

  12. 12

Re: Steve Rosenberger – It happens ALL the time. Its the same when minority kids go missing and you don't hear about them…the media picks and chooses what stories to blow up. Gay is the new cool thing to talk about because gays force their issues to the forefront so OF COURSE as soon as a gay kills himself it becomes news. Its part of the "gay" agenda. How many suicides take place everyday? How many of those people are gay? Exactly….you just disproved your OWN point.

  13. 13

Great…so now we are not only expected to accept this lifestyle but we're not allowed to talk about it either? There is a little thing called free speech. People are allowed to have AND state opinions; whether or not others agree.

  14. 14

    Yo go Zuckerberg you studmuffin!

  15. 15

Yes! Go to www.ImagineNoHate.com There is a really touching video tribute to the teens who were bullied and committed suicide

  16. 16

Why is your world so small that only gay bullying counts? Where were you when Matthew Shepard was tortured and left to die alone in a field because he was gay? Now that this a few kids killed themselves and made the news, and there is a groundswell you're making yourself relevant. Bullying affects all ages, all genders, all religions … everyone. Not just gays.

  17. 17

THANK GOODNESS that everyone seems to agree that bullying happens to all types of people. I am so happy that this is such a big issue now and people are doing more.

  18. 18

Re: Steve Rosenberger – The last party of what you said…. Thats bullying

  19. Logan says – reply to this

Re: gorgeous_chik7 – The gay population is the only legal citizens in the Untied States of America that do not have the same rights as the rest of the legal citizens of this country. THAT is why you are hearing about it!!! So take your bigotry about this mysterious "gay agenda" (which by the way, is something straight people have made up because they can't seem to deal with gays living among them) and blow it out you ass.

Unlike tiggerchick and Rasputin think because they're NOT GAY, is gay people go thru WAY more bullying than a black or fat person. It's 2010, gay is here to stay so get used to it or start sucking on a big fat one.

This is what America likes to think ALL of it's companies are like - they are NOT!!
