Discrimination In The Boy Scouts!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooGay Gay GayLGBT

How narrow-minded can people get?!

A gay father in Dallas was humiliated this week after his community decided he could no longer serve as leader in his 9-year-old's Cub Scout pack because he's gay!

Jon Langbert has spent the last two years devoted to the pack and his son, helping however he could and aiding in their lucrative popcorn fundraiser for the group. But at last month's scout meeting, someone complained about his homosexuality and he's since been asked to step down from his position. Needless to say, Jon is upset. He told the press:

"What message does that send to my son? It says I'm a second-class citizen."

Robert McTaggart, the Cubmaster for the pack, let Jon know that he would still be allow to participate in the popcorn fundraiser. Apparently, Jon is still good enough to hock their merchandise, just not good enough to wear their uniform.

Ugh! Awful!

The Boys Scouts of America has had a long-standing policy that rejects not only leaders who are gay, but also atheist. One of the leaders of the Scouts organization explained:

"Our policy is not meant to serve as social commentary outside the Scout program. We respect people who have a different opinion from us. We just hope those same people will respect our right to have a different opinion."

You want people to respect you for being hateful for no reason? Are you looking for understanding when you can't muster enough up yourselves?!

Shame on you for making that devoted father feel like he wasn't worthy to be apart of your group and for confusing that young boy! What a terrible example you are setting for all of those children, showing that being different is a punishable crime!

We're disgusted!

Yeah it's fucked up but it's a private club… nothing you can do about it… I was a member and think it's deplorable, but they have their rights. Watch the south park episode on it

  2. 2

And…? They're allowed to believe and do as they want. They are a private organization. It's no secret that they don't support gays. IF you don't like it don't join, or try to change it. Not everybody has to jump on the Gay bandwagon…

  3. 3

This is getting outrageous….its the boy scouts! Let them have whatever membership requirements they wish. They have been a very successful program developing young men. All perverts…leave them alone!!

  4. 4

This is shameful. It really is a local decision, despite the national policy.

My son is a Cub Scout despite the policies. When people ask why I support the organization, I say that my open minded son and others like him will be the ones who will have the power to change the policy when they're older. They will care about the organization AND the whole community- gay and straight. If open minded people keep their kids out, then the only people left are the closed-minded.

I thought a lot about having him join, and talked to many gay friends. They recounted their extremely positive experiences with scouting. Not one person had a bad experience.

It's too bad that the Mormons have such a stronghold in BSA upper management.

  5. 5

It isn't right, but they are a private organization and they do have the right to choose who is allowed to participate in their organization.

  6. 6

i don't think the kid should be punish b/c of his dad actions

  7. 7

It's a private club, there are guidelines. That's just life. Girls can't join the boy scouts either but I don't see you throwing a fit over that.

  8. 8

What message does it send to his son? A good one - that the world is full of ignorance and bigotry and your choice is to stay and fight or find a place wherein you are accepted and go there and try and live life according to your own set of moral guidelines.

  9. 9

    PRIVATE club-own rules, enough said.

  10. 10

Yeah, this is bad for the dad and the son.

This has come up before over the years and the Boy Scouts always won in court. I wonder if the dad was aware of this fact and just ignored it.

I think that mississibbi is right about the Boy Scouts changing. Eventually the leadership will change but for now, the dad has to respect their rules to be a part of the organization.

  11. 11

I don't think gay scouts are welcome either……..

  12. 12

This kills me. I have kids in Scouts and am an active volunteer in our local pack as well, yet know many Scout families with LGBT friends and family members (myself included) and friends and family members who are agnostic or atheist. Our kids love the program, and it does offer so many kids so many opportunities for activities they would never experience any other way, and it teaches them so much about self, family, social, educational and global responsibility. Yet, stuff like this happens and I just want to leave the whole thing, because how can I support a group that discriminates? How can I be a part of one? I wrestle with taking my kids away from something they love because of this. (I should also add that the fact that they still want him involved with the fundraiser but not the group is just weird and looks selfish on their part.)

It's not like nobody doesn't know this is their policy - this has been going on for years. If you don't want to challenge the ruling - then don't be shocked when they boot you out. Although, good luck going to court over this one. Americans can't even get gay marriage legal and that's a human rights issue.

  14. 14

    Canteen boy

  15. 15

Re: SnowBoarder4LIFE – Have you heard of Girl Scouts?

  16. 16

Its wrooooong. just like the kkk not allowing blacks.

  17. 17

i was a scout from the time i was 6 til i was 18. i never agreed with this rule. i am a heterosexual male who feels that homosexuals should be able to be in any organization they want.

  18. 18

"My tax dollars are paying for their discrimination. And the next gay dad who wants to come along can't. I'm not going to let them," Langbert said. "My position is that the school cannot allow the use of their facilities to an organization that discriminates."

  19. Sgirl says – reply to this

This is a private organization. No athiests, no gays. Who cares? It is a private club. It is narrow minded of the homosexual father to think that others need to bend to see things his way. Not the other way around. Too bad for him. That is life. He is setting a bad example for his son by insisting that others are narrow minded. We all have our beliefs and values and it is completely wrong for this man or Perez to insist that someone is narrow minded because their views are different. No one said the kid had to go, no one said the dad couldn't be involved in a non-leadership role. Get over yourself. This is hateful of the homosexual, insisting others are wrong when he is clearly wrong. This is not a homosexual organization. It is that simple.

  20. 20

Right or wrong, its a private entity. That issue has been thoroughly litigated. Regardless, the guy knew the policy when he signed up. Unless he was searching for a law suit, he should not have thought he was so special that they would exempt him - popcorn skills or not.

  21. 21

you dont have to jump on the "bandwagon" but with all thats going on with young gay boys, right now is the time to show the most support towards the gay community. This poor father shouldnt feel embarrassed forr wanting to spend time with his son.

  22. 22

I don't know how the BSA gets away with calling itself a private organization. It receives a ridiculous amount of tax money. Up until 2004, many boy scout troops were directly sponsored by government agencies. Now the BSA hides its tracks by accepting money indirectly, and getting use tax-funded facilities for free. I'll accept the BSA's right to discriminate just as soon as the Support Out Scouts Act is repealed, and the BSA stops using public money and stops using public facilities without paying the rental fees that real private organizations have to pay.

  23. 23

This is my town that is doing this. I live in one of the most ignorant and unwelcoming cities in the country. I was mortified when I heard this, but not at all surprised. This is not at all out of character for our town. It's a very religious community, not that there is anything wrong with that, but with that religion comes a wave of intolerance from most. I would really like to do something to speak out against this, but the Boy Scouts are a private club and technically they can do what they want. If I was the dad I would sue for discrimination, since there is not way this can be legal if workplaces can't discriminate for things like sexuality.

  24. 24

Yes it is sad but its a private organization and I believe that courts sadly have backed them on this a few times. If they met at a public school or something to that sort it might be different but its usually a private home owner or house

  25. 25

Why would you want to be a club where you are clearly not wanted? Stop trying to push the boundaries everywhere! Start your own scout group. As a leader, he knew the rules and what the Scouts stand for.

  26. 26

the boy scouts discriminates against gays and atheists. yet they have their meetings on school grounds. paid by MY tax dollars. glad to see this others are starting to see what kind of organization it is. cant wait til everyone finds out how many pedophiles run the scouts.

  27. 27

its a private club, BUT they use school grounds! public school grounds paid for by tax payers.

  28. 28

its a private club that recruits out of PUBLIC schools, people. Educate yourselves on this pedophile infested christian group.

  29. 29

Um, first thing I'd do is get out of the ass backwards state of Texas. It's full of cavemen. I have two boys and we've been approached numerous times to join. My husband is an athiest and we believe in gay right. I go out of my way not to support any of their fundraisers. I'm sure if a large, private children's organization rejected Christians, there would be more of an outcry. Fuck you, Boy Scouts.

  30. 30

PRIVATE club receiving PUBLIC funds. They use PUBLIC schools, PUBLIC grounds, receive America's tax dollars. Tax dollars from straight/gay people, atheists, etc. 60% of the troops are run by mormons. Watch Penn and Teller's show "Bullshit" about the Boy Scouts of America…. very interesting.

  31. 31

the only way to change this org is from within. I know several eagle scouts (adults now) who are atheist. I am atheist. My webelo son is atheist. He says his duty to god is to respect other people's beliefs and that if they ask him about believing in god, he says I believe in spinoza's god. Open minded people need to stay within the org and work on convincing people to think differently from within. Of course, then there's the LDS troops and there's no hope for them. Fact is, BSA teaches a lot of good things. It's just these two issues they are fucked up about. But, like the rest of the nation… they'll eventually come around.

  32. 32

To the private entity people: Replace gay with black. How okay is it now? It's the same thing entirely and it's unacceptable.

  33. 33

The KKK's a private club too. Does that make it Ok?

Augusta Nat'l Golf Course denies women. Is that Ok too?

  34. 34

Well, if you put a whole bunch of gay men around young boys, chances are someone's gonna end up molested and/or raped. I'm glad they have that rule. Never know when a NAMBLA member is around…

  35. 35

Yup its a private club… membership is voluntary! AND usually you have to follow their policies and procedures… that's the real world dude!!!
Sorry but it being an all male's club, I can see the legality of having a Gay male as a leader… there could become issues regarding pedophilia… I understand that pedophilia can exist in heterosexual men but…. yeah…. :) :) :) it's a thought right… and it makes sense…
Is it right? No one will know… Will it change? Probably not in my lifetime or yours, but it might… I personally don't care and all this homosexuality awareness it getting pretty obnoxious… we get it, you like the same sex but it's NOT THE RACE or GENDER CARD… you ARE NOT born "gay"… if you were born gay, it would be genetic and scientist have not proved that yet… RESEARCH!!!

  36. 36

The boyscout's leadership is very Texas and Mormon based and that's never a good combo for anyone's civil rights. One day people will look at this bigotry in amazement ,that these things went on.

  37. 37

Re: b a t k i s s – BSA is not government funded it is private that is why they can have this rule. No ones tax dollars are funding anything in the Scouts.

  38. 38

The girl scouts has no such discrimination. Put your kids in Indian guides or other groups that don't condone this kind of insane bigotry. Certain country clubs kept out blacks and women,it doesn't make it right. No matter how many bigoted morons repeat that it's a private club. BFD. It's still discrimination.

  39. 39

Re: CrazyCanadianChick – Of course you are born gay, I didn't realize Canada had some of the same ignorant white trash we have in the sttes but you are proof. Take your hate somewhere else.

  40. 40

    This is terrible.

I actually left the girl scouts as a young girl over a decade ago in protest of the Boy Scouts ant-gay stance (I do recognize themas separate organizations but they also often work together).

Its sad that in over 10+ years little has changed.

  41. 41

Re: FastTalker – Perez should drop your membership here , I'm tired of reading your insanely hateful ,uneducated ,republican posts.

  42. 42

Read their statement again. It read:
"We respect people who have a different opinion from us. We just hope those same people will respect our right to have a different opinion."
Narrow-mindedness is a two-way street….something that the left does not have the ability to comprehend.

  43. 43

The boy scouts have a long standing record of discrimination, including against african american's and changing venues…

  44. 44

i dont think people understand the weight of this issue. we are supposed to be living in a country where we all have equal rights, where we all feel we have power and a voice. it's ridiculous that we still can't accept alternative lifestyles to our own. this father wanted to spend time with his son, and for them to kick out a member who has helped for 2 years seems incredibly cold and unfair. unfortunately for small minded people, gay marriage will be legal and issues like this will become more and more infrequent, as gay people will be given more freedom in our country. get used to it. i feel lucky i'm straight, because if i was gay i would not be able to stand so many ignorant, disgusting, narrow minded people.

  45. 45

Re: leborw – is it narrow minded to think that black people are equal to white people? or that interracial marriage should be legal?

  46. 46

There is a really great article about him in Park Cities People telling about what a great dad he is. The BSA rule is wrong and needs to change.

  47. 47

Bitch Please!!!!!!!!!!! You all don't even know the half of it. The boyscouts did not exhibit this narrow minded philosophy in the 1970's to early 80's. Thats when the Morons oh excuse me Momons took over the organization. The LDS Church host/sponsor over 60% of the approximately 123,000 Scouting units in the United States and use the Scouting program as part of their youth ministrationons. This means that queers and atheist are not welcome. The Mormons hate both. When are we gonna get it into our thick skulls that the Mormons are a threat to a free society. Why do you think they were slaughtered back in the day? Let us rise up against their tyranny!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. 48

How does being gay conflict with camping and achieving merit badges? Also, let's not act like it's a private adult club, end of story. This is an organization for kids and when they tell a kid that his dad isn't as worthy as other dads, that's fucked up.

  49. 49

It's a private organization and they don't like men touching the boys. Sorry, dude. I guess he'll have to grab some other kids junk.

  50. 50

It's so horrible to hear stories like this. Regardless if this man is gay or not, at least he is stepping up to the plate of helping and being involved in his child's life opposed to many parents out there who put work/their lives over their children on a daily basis.

  51. 51

Re: CrazyCanadianChick – The majority of pedophiles prey on girls, not on boys. That is a FACT. And considering that fact, as well as considering that the majority of the Boy Scouts leaders are straight, you really should be worried about the pedophiles among them.

  52. 52

Indeed, they are a private club and they can accept whomever they please, but that doesn't change that the fact that they hyporicritically accept people's money and don't accept people themselves. But then again, greed and bigotry often go hand in hand.

  53. 53

Thanks for sharing the story I sent! Sure, they have the right (by law) to discriminate, but is it RIGHT? No, it's horrible.

  54. 54

That is unbearably shameful and I feel for the father.

  55. 55

They have a right to their beliefs. Leave them alone, they do a great deal of good for boys' development. Stop pushing your minority request in lieu of the majority.

  56. 56

No atheists? Well, there goes my chances of being a den mother. I'd rather my future children be a part of an accepting organisation, not one that promotes bigotry.

  57. 57

What is worse is that this goes against everything learned as a scout.

  58. 58

This is definitely the wrong message to send to young people. It's showing these boys that it's okay to discriminate against someone who is different. I wouldn't be surprised if a large percentage of these boys become bullies.

  59. 59

Perez's opinion is so open mined and considerate since he changed his ways on Ellen. Oh wait it was the Boy Scouts who said "We respect people who have a different opinion from us. We just hope those same people will respect our right to have a different opinion." and Perez who said "you for being hateful", and "We're disgusted!". My bad.

  60. 60

Ugh- enough with all the gay stuff. You have rights and all, just like women, and people of other colors and religions- but enough is enough already, you are making a choice to be gay- it's like me choosing not to like vanilla ice cream. Stop shoving what you choose as your lifestyle down other people's throats and just live your life. Get over yourselves people! That's all any of us are….. people- whether we are gay, straignt, purple, or polkadot or undetermined!

  61. 61

We moved from Vancouver Canada to the Dallas area in Texas and enrolled our twins in the Scouts. We pulled them out less than 2 months later due to their stand on homosexuality. I had found out that the Scouts weren't allowed to use school or government property because the ACLU had sued the Scouts because the Scouts discriminated. This was news to me–I asked who the Scouts discriminated against, the Scoutsmaster said homosexuals would not be welcome due to the Scouts moral code. I asked and was told that if a boy had two dads/two moms he would not be welcome in the scouts (I am a married heterosexual) because of the Scouts moral code. I responded that in Canada we don't consider homosexuality and homosexuals immoral, nor do the Canadian Boy Scouts. We no longer support the Boy Scouts in any way ie fund raisers etc. And Hey ACLU, the Boy Scouts in my area were meeting in public schools.

  62. 62

Re: knowitall – Oh REALLY? Guess I missed the announcement when the scientific community confirmed they found the "gay gene"! I am also Canadian, and up hear, we call it "well informed". It has not yet been proven that anyone is "born that way" and to say so, is very irresponsible…but then, look who I am talking to.

  63. 63

parents shouldnt let their kids join this asso. they are the future racist of america, one step under the KKK. worthless pieces of shit.

  64. 64

We should create a new club for our boys to replace this outdated private organization. Who's in? Does the girl guides have the same rules?

  65. 65

The boy scouts have had these values since before I was a kid. You can't tell me that the father didn't know this. If the father is so against their beliefs yet he still let his kid join then who does he have to blame for this? Get over it. Find another organization that approves of your lifestyle and move on.

  66. 66

Re: Not my gumdrop buttons! – But, if we exchanged the gay man for a black man, everyone and their grandma would have a big shit over it.

  67. 67

Some might consider this wrong, but the Bill of Rights is a double edge sword. You can't have things both ways. The BSA has every right to let whoever they want into their Private Organization & believe whatever they want to believe because they are protected by the First Amendment. Tolerance should be preached, but this is the USA and we can believe in whatever the flip we want here without persecution or hostility. If an insane group of people called Scientology can setup shop, and preach their brand of craziness, then the BSA has the right to do the same. Don't like their group, do join. It's like the crap they put on TV….Don't want you kids watching that chit….Turn the channel.

  68. 68

it's not disgusting. why have a group or club if anyone and everyone can be a part? this equal stuff gets on my nerves - it's likea bunch of cry babies complaining about everything. i'm sure someone will make a gay father son group they can join if there isnt already one. but the boy scouts should not and will not change.

  69. 69

    Re: knowitall

Just because some people don't have the same beliefs as you do doesn't make them haters. In fact, you're showing the kind of intolerance in your post that you're complaining about. You're pretty much saying "don't come posting here unless you agree with us and share our values". Sound familiar?

  70. 70

I won't let my 8 year old son be part of such an narrow minded organization. Thankfully, he hasn't pushed to be part of it. It's really too bad because there a few good things that my son could learn.

  71. 71

Hahaha… years ago when my husband was in scouts, his father thought being in scouts was gay! BAHAHA. But yeah anyway, I love gay people.

  72. 72

Everyone keeps stating that this is a "private" organization.

Private means "not available for public use, control, or participation…Belonging to a particular person or persons, as opposed to the public or the government." A private place or organization receives no public funding; people become members through invitation or through policies defined by the owners.

However, the Boy Scouts receive tax-funded incentives both from Federal and Local governments. The lines are blurred and the organization really can't have it both ways.

  73. 73

Re: CrazyCanadianChick – You are one ignorant bitch my girl. Calling gay people pedophiles.

  74. Slm says – reply to this

Ok, so who are we to judge anyone, be it gays or scouts. I have been a parent with 2 sons in scouting for the past 6 years. I am not aware of any rule restricting gays from Scouting. There are single mothers, single fathers, divorcees & maybe even some gay parents. I will say though that Scouting has a base of religion. The charter that we are registered to belongs to a Christian church, with a Christian base to the Pack/Troop. So if you join our pack/troop, it is based on Christianity and we must follow what the church wants for the scouts, such as religious emblem training, non Halloween activities, etc. Each charter is sponsored by different organizations be it private school, church, etc. I really think it is not the Boy Scouts as a whole, but maybe individual charters and their supporting organization.

  75. 75

I think they have every right to set their own rules and practice them…it's a private organization after all. It is called freedom my friend. Just like that father is free to join any other club with his son. You should start practicing what you preach for Perez, you ask people to respect your nature and opinions but you don't respect others'.

  76. 76

Is nothing sacred……Get your own organization if you don't fit in theirs……

  77. 77

Some may not realise, but the founder of the Boy Scouts, Lord Baden Powell, is considered by many to have been Gay himself. Yes he's British and yes, it all started in Britain where they are known only as The Boys Scouts, not of the UK, just The Boy Scouts. I guess because he's a Brit it won't matter to the US scout movement, but maybe they should examine upon whose morals they based and founded their organisation.

  78. 78

    Re: Lilly03

Except, as others have pointed out, they don't act like a private organization when it comes to getting to use public buildings for free, or getting tax money support via the Support Our Scouts Act. If they want to be a private organization, they need to act like one. That means not taking tax money, and paying the same rental/use fees that *real* private organizations have to pay to use public facilities.

  79. 79

Yes, private. Right? No. But this has been going on for YEARS! Do more research about them and why they really brached their Explorer programs off into Learning for Life.

  80. 80

    they are so messed up

  81. 81

just because they're a private org they shouldn't have the right to discriminate! skanks!

  82. 82

I just do not understand how people can be so closed minded when a person or group does not agree with a specific principal or belief. Why does someone HAVE to accept a person who is gay? Why does an organization HAVE to accept a person who is gay or be considered a bigot, or discriminating? I am so tired of people telling me what I have to believe or I am being closed minded, wrong for having my own beliefs, or straight out discriminating.

I actually commend this scout group for sticking to their beliefs and not caving into public pressure. The individual knew their beliefs when he joined and accepted the possible risk of not being accepted if found out.

If people want to accept gay as an ok way of life that is fine. But I should also have the right NOT to accept it without being treated as if my beliefs are wrong. I am not out trying to harm them in anyway or say negative things about them I simply do not believe it is an acceptable way of life and I should have that right as should any private person or private organization.

  83. 83

First all, many Scout troops meet in libraries where ANYONE can meet for free. Yes, libraries are tax payer funded, but any group can meet there including the KKK. The organization's core beliefs do not accept the homosexual lifestyle as a proper way of life. We MUST respect their beliefs. I find it so ironic that so many people who claim to love freedom of speech and the right of public assembly condemn both the Scouts free speech and right to public assembly. It's a private club– don't join if you don't agree. But they have Constitutional rights.

  84. 84

Re: alexie silver – that is exactly why they make it private so they can decide everything their way if you hate it so much start your own
