John Landis Vs. Inception

There's no denying the fact that Inception is visually stunning…but is it original?
Some critics absolutely love the film for its originality, but some have denounced the film for being too similar to films such as 1984's Dreamscape, and 2006's anime film Paprika.
Legendary horror director John Landis has decided to take a stand against Inception.
Here's what he had to say about Christopher Nolan's mindbender:
"Interestingly enough 'Inception,' which is wonderful, is not original. There have been a lot of movies like it; remember 'Dreamscape?' Oh that's bad special effects but almost the same movie. It's Dennis Quaid and Edward Albert is the president of the United States and they insert him into his dreams."
More from Landis:
"Ya know, I think, don't misunderstand me I think Christopher Nolan is a wonderful director it's just I don't think he is yet to make a movie other than 'Memento' that I thought was really original, its just very stylish."
And more:
"He's a lucky guy, I'm glad for him; I love the fact that he can continue to make his movies. Whether he makes a couple of unsuccessful ones in a row, he'll be in the same situation as everybody else. More power to him I like smart filmmakers and I think he's great."
We def enjoyed Inception, but Landis certainly makes valid points. There are absolutely similarities between Dreamscape and Nolan's film.
What do U think? Is Inception unoriginal? Does Landis' argument change your feelings about the film?

No movie will ever be considered truly original. Every movie will be compared to another it's just the way it goes in Hollywood. Inception was enjoyable because it wasn't a remake, based on an old tv show, or a formulaic romantic comedy. Is Inception similar in some ways to other movies sure but is it more original and creative than 90% of the movies that came out this year- yes it is.
-Comparison starts-
A man can enter other people's dreams
-Comparison ends-
Avatar wasn't that original either …
(not to mention every Hollywood remake ever made)
All movies are similar , and it's not a bad thing. That's just how it is. They are inspired by something that we all can see or experience so they will never be "original".
At least Nolan hasn't been involved with the death of anyone on his set unlike Landis.
Interesting, I thought they were trying to rip off that old Christopher Walken movie Brainstorm. But regardless, Inception was just terrible, laughable, and unwatchable. 'Dream within a dream' get the fuck out of here. lol
Re: SRM – qft
honestly, all movies arent original.. Its normally a branch off from a Shakespeare play. Avatar wasn't even original, I got a Pocahontas feeling when watching it, but rather than native american, they were an African tribe. And the typical white man saves the world. Anyways. the movie was.
inception wasnt original
there is a big difference between being inspired or paying homage or just by coincidence having a similar idea
but ripping something off with the intent to pass it off as your own original idea is WRONG
Re: Abbs5522 – Well said. There is no way you can compare Dreamscape and Inception, even if the concept is the same. John Landis made a weak point.
Maybe not original but well done. Looks more like Ludwig Von Drake than Dreamscape. So why a success? Probably the Leo subplot.
about as similar as all vampire movies, as in similar but not really at all… what a useless post…
I don't really care if it's not 100% original…it's a great movie. Case closed!
