R.I.P Limewire

| Filed under: Music MinuteTech Talk

limewire shuts down

Looks like music pirates aka practically everyone will have to find another P2P site to download their music from!

After a ten year run, Limewire has joined the P2P Cemetery, along with old-school Napster, Kazaa, and many others.

Today, Limewire will follow its court-ordered injunction, and they'll start the process of disabling their file-sharing and music-searching features.

The company behind Limewire, LimeCompany, will move forward in some way, shape, or form, most likely in the form of a music store or a streaming music service.

Congrats to the music industry for another victory! This is definitely a big one.

Will U mourn Limewire's demise?

    no way!!!!

  9. 9

There will always be another program… try Frostwire or BitTorrent

  10. 10

Absolutely! As a life-long Mac user, I've enjoyed thousands of free downloads from Limewire. It's a great shame to see them go. I've been a user since 2001 and of course I've never gotten a virus, so today is a sad day.

Yep. Another victim has to take a hit for the team. Technology and a bit of brains will always beat the iDummies. Thanks for taking one for the team, Limewire!!! If an artist deserves my money, they will get it, the others can suck it!!!

that shits awful spyware garbage anyhow, no loss.

  13. 13

Am probably the only one that buys music.. its just the right thing to do.

  14. 14

No, because there are these things called torrents people have been using for years now. Limewire has been an outdated piece of tech for years.

  15. 15

I am mourning the death of LimeWire… sort of. Funny this is all happening today… I actually opened LimeWire today for the first time in months and saw the lovely new message. I've used LimeWire for years, almost since the fall of Napster. It became unreliable though, offering up viruses at every turn. So, whatever I guess. And ya know… not everyone who used LimeWire did so illegally…

  16. 16

i havent used limewire in so long…just use 4shared or rip songs off youtube….

  17. 17

Not as much as I mourned the demise of AudioGalaxy back in the early 00s. You could find the most obscure songs or songs that have been long out of print that you thought you could never find again on that site.
That being said, I don't know if this will really revive the music industry. A lot of people aren't willing to pay big bucks for music anymore. The record companies need to stop treating the music listening public as if we're the villains.

  18. 18

The pirate bay is better anyway.

  19. 19

    Try Soulseek [slsknet.org].. there's no spy-ware & it's free.

  20. 20

It makes me not want to support the music industry even more. If I buy a box of cookies, can I not share them with whomever I please? Fuck these money hungry "artists". I don't charge anyone to look at the art I make (and I could).

  21. 21

    Good!!
    buy your damn music, people.

  22. 22

    BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

  23. 23

tell me this is a joke. fuck the music industry! fuck you fucking fascist nazi's! i want my music and i want it fucking free!

  24. 24

DAMNIT. LIKE WTF IS UP WITH THIS???

  25. 25

    DAMMIT!!
ok, i'm not that upset, i used limewire a long time ago and moved on to better things since then and now i only use as a last resort, still, this is a bummer. You may call this a win for the music industry, but for those of us who enjoy free music because we have no money, this is a loss.

  26. 26

Don't worry shutting down Lime Wire will help the music industry less than 2%, since there are tons of other P2P programs out there such as frost wire, bear share as well as others, and don't forget the music web sites that put up free music everyday.

  27. 27

Nooo, I can't believe it. I was just using it yesterday:-( 80% of my songs are from there. I am well pissed off! now need to find another free download streaming website.

  28. 28

    Dammit! That sucks!

  29. 29

one of the sadest days of my life :( kill me now

  30. 30

i'm going to miss it. It was a good source to get music you could download selected songs from artist instead of buying their whole album n only liking one song.

  31. 31

i dont think so cuz i still got mines up and running..

  32. 32

    Mine still works…

  33. 33

    Thank god for torrents

  34. 34

limewire is so 2002, why would you use that when the pirate bay is around?

  35. 35

I logged onto it yesterday and got a lovely little court injunction message. =( Guess I will have to use frostwire.

  36. 36

    wwwwaaaahhhhhh! limewire:(

  37. 37

damnit, well i've been buying from itunes recently anyways.

  38. 38

    just use usenet

  39. 39

Re: Evillittleangel – Mine quit working yesterday and when I went to the actual Limewire site, all it said was that Limewire was under a court-ordered injunction

  40. 40

Re: Chinwe Okorie Ŧ – You are SO boring , should get out of this blog seriously. All you do is throw rainbows and pony. Yawn.

    42

i am seriously bummed. i've been using limewire for years with no problems on both pc and mac. well when one goes another one pops up we'll just have to wait and see.

  43. 43

this sucks and i think is bad for the music industry- i love limewire but i also buy music!

  44. 44

    NOOOOO :(

  45. 45

Music industry is nothing but greed. I will never buy another cd. How is it copyright if youre sharing what you already purchased? And in many cases songs that you can no longer iether buy at the store or on Itunes?
I hope the music industry and its greedy ass's fall on their faces and lose even more revenue.

  46. 46

no people who already have limewire can still use it only there is not going to be updates and other people who doesn't have limewire can't download it anymore, so it still sucks because you could always find your music there and with torentz i always downloaded with limewire

  47. PIQUE says – reply to this

    47

    everyone can use u torrent

  48. 48

NOOOOOO!!!!! NOT AGAIN. Now I have to d/l music somewhere else for free. GODDAMMIT! I'm going to miss you limewire. may you RIP.

  49. 49

Yes, because where the fuck else am I supposed to get my free music?! :(

  50. 50

WTF! Limewire was awesome! but there's still good music downloading programs… imesh and bearshare.

  51. 51

    WHY?!?!??!?!?!
Now I actually have to start buying my music!

  52. 52

    That sucks. =/

  53. Lumie says – reply to this

    53

That's great! All the thieves (or, like Perez said, practically everyone) who think it's ok to steal music because it's easy… ugh, they disgust me. I wish there was a way to catch them all, and punish them like other criminals.

    Go music industry!

  54. 54

I'll miss limewire. It's helped me since I was 13. I'm 20 now. And I've given back of course. Bought albums from my favorite artists, whom Limewire gave me good access to. The music industry is as greedy as people never intending on giving back to artists they love. The industry steals from artists more than we ever could.
