Obama Appears On The Daily Show…But Doesn't Mention Gay Rights!

barack obama appears on daily show but doesnt mention gay rights

We enjoyed Barack Obama's interview with Jon Stewart for the most part….but he STILL DIDN'T ADDRESS GAY RIGHTS ISSUES!

Overall, it was an entertaining interview, and they certainly discussed some crucial issues, but we wish they could have given even 1 minute of time to the issue of gay rights.

Here's Jon Stewart on the current state of the people in the nation:

"Are we the people we were waiting for? Or, does it turn out those people are still out there and we don't have their number? How are you feeling about that?"

In response, Obama said the following:

(That he was) "…feeling great about where the American people are, considering what we have gone through."

Obama continued to list accomplishments of his office, including health-care reform, financial reform, credit card reform, and slowly growing the economy.

Jon Stewart and Obama butted heads the most when the issue of health care came up.

Here's what Stewart had to say about it:

"Sometimes I don't even know what you want in health legislation."

Jon also called Obama's dealings with health care legislation "timid." Here's how Obama replied:

"Jon, I love your show but this is something where I have a profound disagreement with you — I don't want to lump you in with other pundits."

Obama defended his administration's health care legislation, and made it clear to Jon that he doesn't consider it to be "timid" at all.

As we said, there were certainly some important issues discussed, and we think it was a well-done, entertaining interview, but Obama really needs to step up to the plate with gay rights issues!

We appreciate the fact that he released an "It Gets Better" video for gay youth, but we're def gonna need a lot more from him than that.

What did U think of Obama's interview on The Daily Show?

There are more important things going on right now than gay rights. High joblessness an election coming up, two wars. I'm gay but it's not our time yet but it will come soon he has to worry about the whole country.

  2. 2

To be fair, Stewart didn't ask him about gay rights…so I wouldn't have expected him to just bring it up during an interview without being asked about it.

  3. 3

Here's my take. Gay Rights is a civil rights issue, it is sad to see it struggling because we know 50 years from now it won't be the same but better.
However, you have to remember the Democrats are have come under fire as of late and Obama is trying to regain his party. In order to do this he has to make more moderate bi-partisan decisions, which means not head-on supporting gay rights. This is because conservatives will then competely rule the Dems out. So, in long term he is doing the right thing to keep Dems in, since they will most likely be the ones able to pass the legislation. SO STFU it's annoying.

  4. 4

No offense to you, Perez, but gay rights is not a big issue with this president. Like most black males, I think Obama is a homophobe. Remember his first day in office how he promised to close Guantanamo Bay in one year? Well, it's now almost two years and it's still open. Obama says what he needs to say and promises what he needs to promise to get him ahead.

  5. 5

seriously mario? there are far more important things in the world right now than some gay people who can't get married. have some perspective. the US govt has much bigger fish to fry right now and you should be grateful that you live in a country that is so supportive of your sexuality. many countries in the world still imprison, beat and kill homosexuals, so stop being so whiny. its unbecoming.

  6. 6

Stop speaking for gay people, seriously, as a straight dude, I feel bad for gay americans, that you have tried to position yourself as some gay rights leader, when you did same shit that made Tyler Clementi to end his life to get famous in the first place.

Just make your money and post celeb shit, you're out of your element talking about social issues.

  7. 7

Jon Stewart didn't ask any questions about it…

  8. 8

It is so funny cause President Obama has put more gay people on his staff that any other administration and yet you still give him a hard time. Even tho the economy suck, Iran is trippin, republican are acting like babies, tea party is beating people for not agreeing with them, and you still want to give him a hard time cause he didn't say something about gays. Hell he didn't say anything about black people either so now what.

Nothing like ungrateful gays. Cause we all know if McCain was in office he really would have done a whole lot.

  10. 10

ARE. YOU. SERIOUS?!!? GAY RIGHTS? THAT'S ALL YOU CAN SAY? More and more people are losing their jobs, their homes, their retirement and YOU HAVE THE UTTER NERVE to expect Obama to mention gay rights? You really and truly need to pull your head out of your enlarged asshole and see what's going on throughout the enire nation. You are definately the most stupid, self-centered human who ever lived.

  11. 11

It was a great interview. They spoke about issues involving the whole country. Gay rights issues should have been addressed but many people are concerned about the healthcare and the economy, and its making them all panic. Hey its a thirty minute show they cant address everything. I believe Obama is doing the best he can.

  12. 12

Since this was not scripted, Obama got what he deserved. If something is not written for him he sounds like an idiot. Stewart is ten times smarter than Obama and it showed.

Way bigger fish to fry dude.
We have a whole country to worry about feeding and keeping employed.

  14. 14

I'm sorry Perez, I do love your site and gay rights are important but a nation in distress is MORE important—SHOUT OUT to PrinceD—Its not our time right now Perez…we need to focus on the economy and getting people working again.

  15. 15

Face it…Obama over promised and under delivered. I really wish we as Americans can have more choices than what Democrats or Republicans are shoving down our throats…we need a third party for moderates…i think that's what the majority of Americans are.

  16. 16

Gay rights are incredibly important. Liberty is just as important, if not more important, than the unemployment rate or the upcoming election. If we as a people are not free (this includes gay people, too), high employment rates, a strong economy and elections don't really matter.

That said, President Obama was not there to address issues of personal freedom and liberty. He was specifically there to address the economy, health care, and the upcoming election. Those issues are not any more important than gay rights, but that's not what he was there to discuss. He also didn't discuss reproductive rights, education, technology, or a host of other very important issues. It's simply not why he was there.

  17. 17

    It was a great interview.
I agree with others here. To be fair to President Obama, Jon didn't initiate gay issues in his interview at all.
Regardless, the President clearly showed his intelligence (as always), and showed how well-informed and on-top of things he is. I am willing to give him more time to continue working on our mess of a country .. NOT A MESS HE CREATED, by the way!!!

  19. 19

Well Stewart nailed it when he called Obama - Dud - I mean Dude. Stewart didn't show much respect - pretty much echos how most American feel about BO. Don' tholdyour breath waiting for BO to address gay rights - I mean he campaigned on keeping marriage as one man and one woman - now he says he is evolving - whatever that means - he's in deep dodo so he'll say whatever gets him votes.

  20. 20

They didn't talk about gay rights because 99% of the country doesn't care about gay rights.

  21. 21

    Re: trakstar5 – ^5 this!

  22. 22

dude,we stilll gettin troops out of iraq, the economy is just building back up,the republicans acting like straight FOOLS and u worried about gays havin the right to say i do?? jeezus perez change ur priorites please!!!

  23. 23

I'm sure that's one of the last things on his big ass list. There are a million other people like yourself that want him to worry about their causes. He can't please everyone. Get over yourself. You're not THAT important.

  24. 24

I remember seeing a preview on CNN for "Black in America 2" where Soledad O'Brien was asking someone what is a bigger problem in america racism or the economy and foreclosures and he said the economy because racism will not put you in debt. That is the problem many gay people have. They identify themselves as gay first and foremost instead of as an American or even as a human being. Gay people make up a small percent of the American population and the economy is the biggest concern of the majority of Americans so could you imagine how pissed people would have been if he went in that interview and started talking about gay rights?

  25. 25

i dunno perez. as much as i'd like there to be equal rights for everyone, there are much more important things going on right now.

  26. 26

Re: tiggerchick5 – You saying that most black men are is like saying that most white people are racists, that all jews are money hungry, that all muslims are terrorists. It is an unfair categorization and EXTREMELY ignorant to paint people with such broad strokes.

Being president doesn't mean that you can make autonomous decisions. He can't just bang a gavel and say "the gays can now get married, dadt is repealed, and Gitmo is closed". Come on, people…let's use some rational thought.

  27. 27

Re: gerry in sf – It's only been TWO YEARS. The country was in the SHITTER when he took office! People have such selective memory!

  28. 28

again with the Gay Rights…..PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZ shut up. The country is falling apart and you want this idiot FOCUS ON GAY RIGHTS.

  29. 29

i LOVE everything perez and I am a cancer-surviving law student VERY passionate about LGBTQ rights, but Obama has other things he needs to deal with. Do we need to end bullying? YES. Do we need to legalize gay marriage? YES. Should people of all sexual persuasions have exactly the same legal rights as others? YES. But our economy is tragic and I have to stick to a very powerful message from another group: when referencing finding a cure, "F*ck awareness, find a cure." Do the same for LGBTQ rights. Stop awareness, find a cure. Fix the societal ills. It will take work, but Obama is not the platform. It needs to be many people, working together. The president, like the Supreme Court, will come aboard in due time to affirm what everyone else is thinking. Work hard. Be vigilant. It will happen.

  30. 30

I used to be quite an admirer of yours Perez but you are quite rapidly fading out. I always felt that underneath all the gossip lied a gentle and compassionate heart. I can't believe the pressure you're adding to the democratic struggles at the most crucial point in American and world history. What kind of moron would be harping on gay issues when the country is looking more certain than ever to fall back into the hands of the devil worshippers? You are criticizing the President when we are days away from Tea Party and Republican fear mongers, racists and gay haters who will return the country into living hell? They are not only going to pick up where Bush left off but it will be magnified beyond your nightmares. President Obama has been performing miracles but you can't expect him to just wave a magic wand. Be real, be patient and be wise or be very very sorry come next week for opening your big immature mouth.

  31. 31

shut up perez. he's a busy man. plus, it's not entirely his decision. it needs to be done, but it needs to be done right, passed through congress, with full cooperation from military leaders.

  32. 32

i am totally for gay rights but there are MUCH more important things to take care of. People are losing homes, losing their jobs and losing lives. Think about someone besides yourself for once.

  33. 33

There's still people in war dying for our country, we're in a huge recession; more and more people are losing jobs, homes, on the streets, and all you care about is gay rights? There's bigger things that need to be resolved first. Be a little bit more open minded will you.

  34. 34

When can gay people realize they are a very small MINORITY. Theres a million and 1 more issues in the US and the world that effects way more people than gays. Priorities! and wasting time on that DADT and the whole gays being allowed to marry needs to be put at the end of the list.

  35. AniaM says – reply to this

Jon Stewart didn't ask him any questions about it. Why should have he talked about gay rights then?

Plus, I think Obama has his plate full right now. You know, fixing the economy, job creation, health care…all that BS that you don't seem to care…

  36. 36

Hmmm…not so fast. Mexico is in the middle of a drug war and an unstable economy, so they have had a MILLION more things to worry about "than gay rights." But Mexico City did it anyway, letting gays marry and adopt…and it was upheld in the Supreme Court. I am tired of hearing, "oh…give the politicians time. Oh…we have other stuff to worry about. Oh…most Americans aren't worried about that right now. Oh…we gays can wait another XX years…." If it's not such a big issue, then by golly, why hasn't this been addressed quickly and on to bigger agendas? I don't buy into the "moderate, reaching across the aisles" either. They were sure quick about striking down Arizona's unfair immigration law, and weren't worried about two-party input in health care reform and economic recovery. Perhaps this is the end to the 2-party system!

  37. 37

OH HOLY SHIT HE DIDN'T MENTION GAY PEOPLE, WHO AS WE KNOW, THE ENTIRE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND. WE HAVE TO IMPEACH HIM NOW!!!!!!11111. Give it a rest, Mario. There's no way he could do anything for the gays until a second term, and throwing a hissy fit over him not handing the world to you on a silver platter right now isn't going to help him get that second term. Dude's got a full plate with the mess he inherited from Howdy Doody there and is getting more done than could reasonably have been expected of him. Do you really think he's got any intention of leaving gay people out in the cold forever?

  38. 38

One I dont think he was even asked about gay rights. And its election season… He needs to stay quiet about hot button issues for the moment

  39. 39

I can't stand the marxist, muslim Alinsky-ite in chief but you are a one issue voter, Perez, and are, therefore ridiculi.

  40. 40

Re: Jaye1980 – yes gerry, but the dems have in control for 4 yrs…ur point is what???

  41. 41

of all the things to talk about …gay rights should be at the bottom of the list!! america has way way bigger issues then that!!!

  42. @v@ says – reply to this

It's late in the campaigning and he's appearing on Stewart scrambling for votes. Gay rights, by the numbers, isn't a big demographic voting block; and that's how it is.

  43. 43

Obama did not mention it because Jon Stewart did not ask the question. So, Perez your question should be, "why didn't JStewart address the issue?"

  44. 44

If the ppl that voted for this idiot actually knew anything about him before hand, they would have known that he does not support gay rights. It's a shame that so many ppl assume your party affiliation defines you to a T. I'm a Rep and I support gay rights all the way. There are also more imp things going on right now.

  45. 45

he's just trying to piss you off

  46. 46

no offense perez but while im all for gay rights Jon didnt initiate it so why would he randomly start talking about it?? not to mention the economy is waaay more important right now. sorry! the govt has a lot on their plate and can only handle so many things at a time. maybe if you defined yourself as an AMERICAN before gay you could understand. i know its frustrating not feeling equal…but every race, religion, sex, etc has gone through it at some point in time. trust me the time will come for the gays…but right now we have other things to worry about. you have to thing about the well-being of the whole american nation before you can focus on a core group of people

  47. adt says – reply to this

There are much more important things for Obama to worry about then gay rights. Not say that gay rights aren't important, but there are many things that are much more important right now. Gay rights is the only fucking thing your stupid ass cares about, what about everything/everyone else, you stupid piece of shit?

  48. 48

    obama is full of shit

  49. 49

obama is slacking he better get his act 2gether b4 someone…

  50. 50

seriously Perez!???? i wonder why all the gays in the U.S. seem to think that just because this President is not a homophobe, then he MUST be a full-on GAY-PRIDE SUPPORTER!??? he has so much going on, and all the gays wanna talk about is what he's NOT doing for their cause. you guys are so selfish and apparently think only of yourselves… i have many gay friends/family members and i'm for equal rights for all, but give our President a break already!!! the world does not revolve around the LGBT community! GEEEEEZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. 51

First- shouldn't out president be running the country instead of booking EVERY tv appearance he can? Second….. enough with the gay rights stuff, there are other issues too. I'm quite sure he didn't have time to mention them all, so he had to pick and choose. I think there are more pressing matters for US citizens than just a matter of personal choice of who someone wants to sleep with.

  52. 52

oops- "out" was supposed to e "OUR".
