Forget Calculus! Take A College Course On Lady GaGa!

| Filed under: Music MinuteWacky, Tacky & TrueLady GaGa

lady gaga is going to be taught in college

We would NEVER skip this class!

University of South Carolina sociology professor Mathieu Deflem is awesome will teach a course next semester with the following title — Lady Gaga and the Sociology of Fame.

Let's take a moment and reflect on the amazingness of that! Here's an excerpt from the course description of Deflem's class:

"The central objective is to unravel some of the sociologically relevant dimensions of the fame of Lady Gaga."

Here's Prof. Deflem on whether or not GaGa will make a guest appearance at his class:

"I will get the word out to her that I'm doing the course. But it might be logistically too difficult for her to come because she will be on tour for most of the spring semester."

This class sounds amazing! We'll be curious to hear more about it when the class begins next semester.

What other celebs do U think deserve to be taught in college?

i'm not from the usa and when I read stories like this, i donno what the heck is happening in that country. seriously, what's next? Medicine: "Heidi Montag and the wonders of plastic surgery" and Arts: "Tan like Snooki 1.0"? jeez

  2. 2

Sacrilegious at it's best but its Sociology so what ever

  3. 3

sounds like the professor wants to meet her and only made up this class as a way.

  4. 4

WTF? This is a fucking joke right?

  5. 5

so in other words they are dumbing down the education system?

  6. 6

Madonna, David Bowie, Kiss, Bob Dylan … not even because I like all of them, just because they each changed music or created an empire.

  7. 7

I love Lady Gaga BUT that's a waste of time and money.

  8. 8

    stupid idea…

  9. 9

only stupid people will take a college class about some stupid over hyped pop singer how the hell is this class going to help you get a job

  10. 10

    Sounds so awesome lol

  11. 11

I expect the students for this class will arrive on the short bus wearing helmets.

  12. 12

    Oh no.

  13. 13

"What other celebs do U think deserve to be taught in college?"

WTF? Are you such an idiot that you think this professor is "teaching" about Gagme? That the course is all about, y'know, like, "how she dyes her hair, and where she gets her ideas for her over-compensating outfits and incredibly lame songs" … ?!
… Are you seriously that stupid, Perez?
Do you even know what the word SOCIOLOGY means?
Just because he is using her as an obvious reference point in his sociology study, does not mean he respects, admires, or even LIKES her.
P.S. And by the way, on the subject of CLASSES, Perez, TAKE A FUCKING GRAMMAR COURSE!

  14. 14

I'm in the History of the Beatles at Indiana University. The school of music also offers a class on Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, 50's and 60's rock, and 70's and 80's rock.

The classes are incredibly well prepared and very interesting. For me they just count as electives, and it's a great way to learn about something I've always been interested in. They don't just focus on the music, but how it impacted society and inspired change in all areas. Don't knock rock classes–they've been some of my favorite classes and completely worth my tuition money.

  15. 15

This is probably the worst thing that a college could do. Totally loses credibility.

  16. 16

Yestraday I kun't evan spel Ladee Goo Gar an know I yam a expret!

  17. 17

w0w does everything have to reolve around her

  18. 18

This is the reason why the US education system is falling behind other countries. This professor probably has tenure and can't be fired.

  19. 19

You have to know what sociologically means to get in Blockhead. Can't skip a class from a school you don't academically qualify for.

  20. 20

i'm taking a class on elvis right now!

  21. 21

Lasy Gaga is not the first, nor will she be the last celebrity that this has happened to. Stop acting like it is a huge deal.

  22. 22

So now learning about her and how she was whoring for attention around the world could help boost the country's GDP by what percentage??

  23. 23

College is expensive no matter how the economy stands but this hack professor is why higher education has become so expensive and in some cases out of reach for some. The courses students might need are either cut back in their availibility or cancelled for the semster just so this hack can fulfill his fantasy of some chick he wants so desperately to meet. I'm glad my college days are behind me and stupid classes such as this were never offered in my class scheduling handbook.

  24. 24

that is the dumbest fucking thing ive ever heard

  25. 25

Re: Brainiac – did you even bother to read the story he linked to? hes been to tons of her shows all over the globe and has met her 5 times. think before you speak out of your ass.

  26. 26

Someone at Rice University is currently teaching a class on Lady Gaga.

  27. 27

ya i'm not surprised. She is a case study and an example of how a person can become a celebrity without having substantial talent in modern times. It makes for a great sociological investigation… i.e.: How to Become Famous by Heidi and Spencer Pratt is a good example of celebrities who became famous by using tactics rather than standing out for their talent. Lady Gaga is a perfect case study with her exaggerated costume wear and her over the top performances. Studying the over-the-top qualities that embody the persona of "Lady Gaga" makes for a great sociological study of how an ordinary person can implement shock stimulation to society to stand out from the crowd–thus making Lady Gaga a perfect case study!! Good for her!!

  28. 28

Anatomy of a semi talented singer with a couple of gimmicks and a great media machine.

  29. 29

if it's an elective, then it's obviously an awesome way to get a credit. people can learn about history or learn how to paint, how does learning about the process of fame mean less of an education? people dont HAVE to take it, calm down :P

  30. 30

How about teaching one about how to reach 24 and not get in the same sociolical mess as Lindsay. There would be a section on blaming and manipulation with LL as the guest speaker and the rest would be taught by Perez's messages to Lindsay. No exams, just drug tests and zingo you get a job with Peta or a Lovelace type flick. $3000 for the class and you get all this. What would we declare our actual major is though. Help me think of that one.Maybe Family therapy or escape from rehab skills.

  31. 31

Re: Cashmere Jay – lmfao YES

  32. 32

omg so fucking lame! i mean there are classes on beatles and all that, but gaga??? she fame whores herself by wearing outrages things and everytime she preaches something, she contradicts it. man that lecturer needs a fucking life

  33. 33

No wonder Americans are so uneducated. Pathetic…

  34. 34

BTW I'm sure taking this class will look great on your resume and will guarantee to get you a job after graduation. I mean everyone knows you have to know about Lady Gaga and fame to make it in this economy! *rolls eyes*

  35. 35

Does no one see that you can totally see her nips in this pic

  36. 36

    SAD !

  37. 37

    They're also offering a course on Radiohead… I wish I never left.

  38. 38

How on earth this ugly mediocre singer was able to convince the entire world shes gods gift to man king is BEYOND me..Whoever her PR team is or manager I hope they are making HUGE bank because they are geniuses

  39. 39

umm they have a beatles class at ucberkeley is that so bad? come on people

  40. 40

This woman is DISTURBING-looking. It's like I'm looking at a man, but maybe she's not a man. She is hard-looking. Her body is in terrible need of a trainer, it's flabby and not toned, and she's always in those two-piece things. I think she is creepy. I believe she should make the records for people to listen to them, certainly never show herself in public or by way of videos or certainly no photos. She should do SOMETHING! Her nose, her body, something! She owes the public this if she wants to be a celebrity. Do something!

  41. 41

I always thought sociology was the biggest bulslhit major for people too stupid to have a real major like pschology, and this proves it!

Oh and Perez, you somehow just failed to post that Fergie was named Woman of the year by Billboard, and your fugly GaGa is only #7 on their list!

  42. 42

Re: Juliette369 – but those people and genres of music have been around a very long time so i can understand a class about them. gaga hasnt been around long enough to warrant anything yet. were not even sure if she will be around in 5 years from now.

  43. 43

What happed to the US!!!!6 YEARS AGO we were on the top of our game…But now we have shitty, economy, movies, actors, music, singers, candidates, shows, books! And know were giving a celebrity a class!!!!I feel like am in a bad parody film. And why the fuck are we giving reality stars the royal treatment?

  44. 44

Meanwhile the guy at the U of Beijing is taking a course on the collapse of the USA.

  45. 45

That's not a total waste of money or anything.

  46. 46

Lady Gaga is not that famous come on

  47. 47

the quintessential example of why american students are graduating from college credentialed but uneducated.

  48. 48

This class will shred her by dissecting her superficial persona.
Next lesson, "How to sell your soul by the exploitation of gays."

  49. 49

I'm so mad because I literally had been telling my friends that, that would be a tight class to take/teach and that I was going to make it happen when I got older! This dude beat me to the punch!

  50. 50

Wow. The higher education system in America is a joke. This is why I opted to drop out of college freshmen year and start my own business.

  51. 51

Yeah because learning about pop music will get you really far in life. How about these idiots buy a quarter of weed, smoke it and talk about Lady Gaga for 4 hours or whatever. It'll save them a lot of money and be just as useful to their "career".

  52. 52

    Stupidest thing I've ever heard!

  53. 53

Vanessa Hudgens and the study of bearding.

  54. 54

Fine. Include GagaStudies 101 in your Sociology degree but how about LifeStudies 101 to help people to think critically and to act ethically, to cope with life's demands without drink or drugs, to deal with stress and mental illness and to become the best person they can - a more desirable set of aspirations for an education system one would have thought. Honestly, having attended a Gaga concert what amazes me is the extent to which people will surrender their own sense of identity to mimic this woman - her weird fashion sense and faux trashiness. Can't help but think that taking a course about Gaga will only delay students from discovering who they are and finding a personally rewarding path in life.

  55. 55

They also ran courses on Charles Manson and OJ Simpson, so what's that tell you???

  56. 56

Sociology is a very interesting class, Lady Gaga would fit into the subject matter just fine.

  57. 57

    Re: onyx1590 – LOL totally

  58. 58

Please do not compare the Beatles to Lady Gag. First, the Beatles's music is still being played on the radio. No offense to all the little monsters but Lady Gag's music is club music and that's it. It will go away. BUT I like the idea of a class studying the fame behind Lady Gag. I am a huge sucker for sociology.

  59. 59

Re: onyx1590 – well I am from the USA and I'm still a bit confused about why this would ever be a class?? If you want to discuss pop culture then do it on your own time. Waste of fucking money. And time. Lady Gaga is going to fade out in the next 5 years because the thing about a gimmick is eventually everyone catches on to it and gets annoyed by it.

  60. 60

BARF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A waste of time and money for a course on this.

  61. 61

I'm a massive fan but a whole course? what a joke. I can see her being an interesting module for a sociology course, but apart from that. No.

  62. 62

The fucking Beatles deserve a class.

  63. 63

You can study Porn…what do you expect the education system in college is Liberal.

  64. 64

Yes, our educational system at its finest … and everyone wonders why all other countries are so far ahead in education.

  65. 65

no wonder their educational system is failing

  66. 66

I think a course on MICHAEL JACKSON would be more interesting than Lady GaGa. Michael was probably the most famous entertainer of all time and I am not sure if there has ever been an artist who has been loved AND hated as much as he was/is. You could examine the pyschology of his childhood, his rise to global superstardom, his issues with women and children or recreating his lost childhood, his fascination with plastic surgery, his narcissism, etc.
Michael Jackson displayed some of the best and worst qualities of humanity and I think he'd be a far more relevant and interesting case study than Lady GaGa.

  67. 67

not gonna lie, i'd take that class if my university offered it.

  68. 68

Re: URwhatUeat – He has already met her, several times.

  69. 69

Re: URwhatUeat – Actually, I go to the University of South Carolina and the professor already HAS met Lady Gaga. Apparently he's been to like 28 of her shows in the past year and said that he ran into her in an airport and she knew him by name…

  70. 70

taking a pop culture class…my paper is on britney spears-revival of pop music. it's britney, bitchhhhh

  71. 71

Wow…what a waste of $3,000 for that class. This isn't something that makes you a more well-rounded learner…just dumber.

  72. 72

thats by far the stupidest thing ever

how will that ever help you in ur career?

    college isnt a joke dude.

why would u pay money when you could just look it up on the internet

  73. 73

Most of the commenters are idiots. The class is not about Lady Gaga, it's about the Sociological basis underlying fame. Lady Gaga is being used as a focal point because she's currently a superstar. You people are the idiots for not understanding what Sociology is, not the professor for designing this course. I hate Lady Gaga, but I see nothing wrong with it. I'm a Sociology minor and I'd probably take the course. Fame is interesting and it's something that's worthy of Sociological study, considering the fact that the emphasis on celebrities plays a large role in our society. I don't necessarily think Lady Gaga is the best focal point, and I believe the class might be better without a specific focal point altogether, but it's not a bad idea.

  74. 74

if it was just a sociology class about fame, there'd be no problem. the fact that it's singling out one person I think it loses some credibility. especially since it's Gaga– she only has half the fame thing because we only see her when she's so costume-y, outrageous and covered in makeup… we wouldn't be able to notice her when she's not in it so it's pretty much impossible for her to have her face all over the tabloids except from public appearances. she doesn't get the "oh, she was seen coming out of so-and-so's house at 7 in the morning" or "canoodling with 50 Cent over a drink" stuff. she could be doing a bunch of stuff in broad daylight but no one knows it's her so she can't get crap for it. that's not fair to everyone else in the entertainment world.

  75. 75

also, for those of you bitching about the quality of the class– not necessarily sticking up for the course, but it's a sociology class so they should be just using her as an example of the science behind fame, not learning about her as a person. if he does it right, it should cover everything a sociology class should cover, just using her to illustrate points/theories to spice it up a bit/get more students in the class. calm down.

  76. 76

Re: Siamesedream33 – If the prof has been to several of her concerts and met her five times as someone has suggested it sounds like he is indulging in his personal hobby horse with this course. The course is about Gaga - if it is about the sudden ascension of a musician to world wide fame there are much better subjects to study - Madonna, the Beatles etc - whose careers and influence far eclipse Gaga's.

  77. 77

Ever seen that movie Idiocracy? This is the beginning…

  78. 78

Okay…it's official…I just threw up in my mouth! What kind of fucking retarded learning institution would allow a class to be taught about an ugly, insecure, narcissistic, coke head FAME WHORE? Lady GaGa is a PIECE OF SHIT wrapped up in chiffon and sprinkled with glitter!

  79. 79

    Re: sid_vicious
APPLAUSE!!! I couldn't have said it better myself. This bitch TOTALLY panders to the Gay Community and exploits them for her own profit. SHE IS A FUCKING HACK…I mean HAG!

  80. 80

    wow that is so stupid

  81. 81

not on my tuition money, no fucking way

  82. 82

Interesting idea! I'd take it; for sure, it's an easy A.

Ah, sociology and psychology are so interesting!!!

  83. china says – reply to this

anybody still wondering why the US lack in - well in nearly everything - by now?

says obama: "It is unacceptable to me, and I know it’s unacceptable to you, for us to be ranked on average as 21st or 25th — not with so much at stake. We don't play for second place here in America. We certainly don't play for 25th." citing one study that found American 15-year-olds rank 21st in science and 25th in math when compared to their peers worldwide and said the U.S. must do better or risk being left behind economically by other nations.

at least in SC sociologists`ll be equipped with the "how to become a really dumb bitch"-101 manual in the future. cheering up?

  84. 84

If they want to study fame and its pros and cons why not study the life of Michael Jackson? He was the most famous person on Earth. Lady Gaga is not that famous. She is popular and talented but people do not go wild on the streets when they see her. Michael Jackson had that kind of draw.

  85. 85

Seriously? Who would be stupid enough to think that this course might help you in your future?

A course on Da Vinci, Michel Ange, Shakespeare, … That is what they need. Not some pathetic fan base group Gathering on Lady gaga. And to Get a credit because you like her, Pathetic.

  86. 86

Wow, what a complete waste of money.

That has no place in any school. She's not special. She's just like anyone else, and you people are worshiping. She's not special, and all the people I know are better than her, and you don't see them being praised and worshiped like this. So sad.

  87. 87

I would love to have been able to take a class on Freddie Mercury. This is a great idea to get students interested in class.

  88. 88

Are you people seriously trying to compare the state of the US educational system to an offering of a college course about Lady GaGa? It's a college course on ONE campus out of the entire United States. It's also an ELECTIVE, meaning most people who take the course will take it for the hell of it, genuine interest, or an easy 3 hours credit in Sociology. You guys are acting like the course is a requirement for all USC students and/or sociology majors to graduate.
PS. It's kind of lame to criticize a course of which you've never taken. Whether or not you are a fan of LG, the subject matter (the idea of fame in society) could be quite interesting.

  89. 89

    Re: china
    Dude, get therapy.
