Ricky Martin Admitted He Was Gay For The Sake Of His Kids

ricky martin admitted he was gay for the sake of his kids

Ricky Martin was brave when he revealed to the world that he was gay, last March.

While on Oprah on Tuesday, Martin spoke all about his experience revealing his sexuality to the world.

Martin spoke about how he sent an e-mail out saying "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," after which he felt "numb" and then "relieved."

Here's Martin with more on his coming out experience:

"When I realized, okay, I just pressed send, whoo … I was alone. I was in my studio alone for a minute. My assistant walked in and I just started crying like a little baby. I started crying."

Ricky claims that his twin 2 year old sons, Valentino and Matteo, were the main reason he felt he needed to reveal his sexuality. Here's what he had to say about it:

"I couldn't take it anymore. It was too painful. But I guess the most important thing is my children … When I was holding them in my arms I was like, 'What, am I gonna teach them how to lie?' Whoa, that is my blessing right there. Then, when I was holding my children I said, 'Okay, it's time to tell the world.' "

We truly respect and admire your reasoning to reveal your sexuality to the world, Ricky!

We're very impressed.

What do U think about Ricky's selfless reason for coming out?

    awww he is inspirational

  2. 2

I think that alone is a great reason for him to come out.
He also came out when he was ready, and that is an important factor too.

I think pretty much everyone already had guessed it anyways years ago.

  4. 4

I am proud of him for finally coming out!! Takes lots of courage. He is a wonderful performer and human being.

  5. 5

he's still seksi to me and I still want him…oh and I'll still give him another baby -call me

  6. 6

I hope that some day "coming out" wont be such a big deal.

Being gay should be treated the same way as being left handed.

  7. 7

i just love me some ricky martin so yummy just to look at but hey 2+2 is 4 right? i think it was o9bvious and i still like him as an artist

  8. 8

In the gay community, that is old news…I'm just glad he's able to come to terms with his sexuality b/c he is a good person and a great humanitarian….I just wish other celebrities like Anderson Cooper, Barry Manilow, Kevin Stacey and others can come out as well b/c there is no shame in being gay especially when you've had a successful life.

    Bull shit!!!!

  10. 10

I don't care about his sexuality I still love my Ricky. My little island of PR is so proud of him! Ricky es orgullo boricua!

  11. 11

I still LOVE Ricky Martin! We all knew he was gay anyway. Glad he finally reached the point of being honest with the entire world. And he is still hot, hot, hot!!!

  12. 12

I still love him. I wish him all the best in the world. I still play livin la vida loca as my exercise and walk song. Yeah, it's a crazy life. He still hot. And I'm a girl. I hope he shows his sons at least in a picture. I plan to watch Oprah tomorrow.

I think it really takes a lot of character to come out of that comfort zone and to say "Hey, I have more integrity than that to teach my children," is inspirational and something we should all aspire to. Teaching our youth not to hate and to accept people for who they are is going to be key for our future.

  14. 14

I think he is already a great Dad. #6 says it best.

  15. 15

Too bad he waited all this time to tell us what we've known for the past 20 years anyway. Just goes to show, who you really are will always shine through and there's no need to hide it, people bought his records even though they knew. He probably woudl've save himself a lot of angst during these years just by letting us know.

On the other hand I would like to say that I still would like to see a world where people who are not heterosexual don't have to declare their sexuality in order to "clear the air". It's not like the rest of us declare our heterosexuality.. ever, so why should they?

Mmm…It seemed like his sexuality was such a big deal even for him…And it really shouldn´t…Hetero or gay: you don´t have to necessarily proclaim it like crazy ..neither hide it ….and absolutely not to make a drama out of it …

It´s just the fact. Nothing to cry about.

Is it courageous to come out when your career is already over? Once, just once, I'd like someone to come out when he or she has a little money to lose. Then more would come out. Riquito coming out in 2001: meaningful. In 2010: meaningless.

  18. 18

i hate that he came out. to each is own. but him coming out ruined all of my childhood dreams, hopes and admirations.
    he ruined it all.
he should have never came out.
never i say. never i will always say. i dont care what anyone think, says or anything. he ruined it all. i dont care who is straight or gay or bi or whatever. he should have just kept it to himself. why because i didnt want to know. i never wanted to know. i never wanted to know when he dated a girl or a boy or anything. the mystery was ruined. i hate it i hate everything about it. stupid stupid stupid. i wish this would have been a practical joke. this is so frustrating. i dont care how bad i am spelling. at least it is letting it all out. dam him. dam him. dam him. since the 7th grade this boy was was my crush. dam him. ok i have vented. thanks perez at least i can vent outloud.
    alldone. that felt good.

  19. 19

EVERYBODY KNEW IT ANYWAY. AS LONG AS HE'S A GOOD FATHER TO THOSE CHILDREN, AND LIVING AS A CELEBRITY WHERE IT IS FAR MORE ACCEPTED THAN IN THE REAL WORLD GOOD FOR HIM. HE'S LUCKY.

  20. 20

Did he honestly think that no one had realised he was as gay as a row of tents!

  21. 21

IF HE REALLY LOVED HIS KIDS HED GET TREATMENT AND QUIT ACTING GAY!!!! ANNE HECHE, JULIE CIPHER AND GAVIN ROSDALE DID AND NOW THEY ARE ALL LEADING UPSTANDING MORAL HETEROSEXUAL LIVES!!!

  22. 22

HE SHOULD BE HONEST FOR ONCE AND TELL THE TRUTH–HE WAS MOLESTED AS A MEMBER OF MENUDO AND THAT CAUSED HIM TO BECOME GAY. HE NEEDS TREATMENT AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWEED TO BE NEAR KIDS UNTIL HE HAS BEEN CURED

  23. 23

I think it's wonderful that he comes out to the people closest to him; however, it's not necessary to come out to the "world." Anderson Cooper is a perfect example. Everyone knows he's gay, but he doesn't make an announcement to the world…yet.

  24. 24

Professor VP…how about Ellen Degeneres? She was huge and had a hit TV show when she came out and as soon as she did she lost everything. She has fought for years to get back to where she was and now she's one of the most powerful women in Hollywood….

and as for Dam him…get over yourself and grow up!! If this country wasn't so ass backwards Ricky Martin would have been able to "come out" 20 years ago. Did you have to tell your parents you were heterosexual??? It's ridiculous that he should have to explain his sexual preference to anyone!

  25. 25

    It fucked his career.

  26. 26

Wow, Mario..you are a complete idiot. Educate yourself. A person who is gay can't be "cured" of it. You're born that way. Anne Heche told Oprah that before Ellen, she never even considered sleeping with a woman. Umm… then you're not gay, you just have a crush on someone. If you're gay, you don't have a choice.
It's morons like you, that can vote, and re-produce, that scare most educated people in this country!

  27. 27

    Bravo Ricky!
It is sad that the world we live in makes this so difficult.
    It is getting better though.

  28. 28

So sexy and talented and great inspiration.

I still remember an interview that Barbara Walters did with Ricky several years ago. In that interview, Barbara flat out asked him if he was gay. I lost all respect for Barbara Walters as a newswoman after that interview. It was such an unprofessional question to ask anyone. I find it sad that so many people feel pressured to "come out" to the public in such a way. What business is it of mine to know whether or not he is gay, and why should it matter either way? I'm still hoping that he will come out with some new music soon — he's got great talent.

  30. 30

ricky also said you shouldn't force someone to come out. keep that in mind, perez. stop trying to out people and mind ya business.

  31. 31

    Re: ProfessorVP
actually, there's only one celebrity who came out and has been successful. ellen. in spite of ellen coming out, her career took off. hopefully, more and more people will use her as an example.

  32. 32

For the sake of the children? I thought this issue was known for at least a few years now. I think he "came out" to pump up his career.Attention, attention,
attention is how they make money.
