Dear Lexington, Kentucky - THIS ROCKS!

lexington-kentucky-elects-first-openly-gay-mayor-jim-gray

Yay!

The people of Lexington, Kentucky - the second largest city in the state - have elected their first openly gay mayor, Jim Gray!

Chuck Wolfe, the President and CEO of Victory Fund - which endorsed Gray - says:

“This is a tremendous victory for Lexington, for Kentucky’s LGBT community and for fairness. We are proud of Jim Gray and his fantastic campaign staff who fought hard for this win.”

This was his second time running for the position, and he beat out incumbent Mayor Jim Newberry for the spot.

Just wonderful!

Congratulations are certainly in order for Gray, and to the people of Lexington!

Yay…so happy to be a resident of this beautiful little Southern City. Mr. Gray will be a wonderful mayor and will do our city proud! Lex has a history of being "gay friendly" and this just solidifies it…come one, come all, we welcome you with big old open Southern arms!

    4. 4

      So what.

    5. 5

SO WHAT? THEY'RE ALREADY HAD OPENLY STRAIGHTS AND AN OPENLY FEMALE MAYOR AND YOU DIDN'T BLOG ABOUT THEM.

      AND

I WISH YOU'D TELL ME WHY YOU KEEP SINGLING OUT GAYS LIKE THEY'RE SENT FROM GOD AS THE CHOSEN ONES OR SOMETHING. THEY'RE JUST PEOPLE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. I'M SURE HE WAS ELECTED BECAUSE PEOPLE BELIEVED IN HIM AND NOT BECAUSE HE'S A POLE SMOKER YOU ASSHOLE.

Yay! I live right next door to Lexington. Didnt realize other people in this area read the site—awesome. =]

Re: LetttyB – A. How could he possibly blog about events that have already happened years and years ago. I'm almost positive when the first female was elected it was a news story! B. It's a big deal just like the 1st woman being elected. He isn't saying anything about gays being "the chosen ones" he's simply acknowledging the fact that he is the 1st openly gay mayor and how it is a step forward. C. Why is everyone complaining about everything being so "gay" lately. YOU ARE ON A BLOG, WRITTEN BY AN OPENLY GAY BLOGGER. Do you expect him to never blog about his own views. ITS A BLOG. That's essentially the point of a blog. You listen to his view about celebrities, and bitch when he makes a view about anything else. ITS HIS. It's not like taking 30 seconds to read the article effected your well-being. People say the gay agenda is being forced down their throats. Your mind only accepts what you feed it. If it bothers you that much, don't click on something labeled gay, gay, gay and just move on with your day. Gay people are proud when gay people accomplish things. The same way whites or blacks or smart or funny democrats or republicans feel when something is accomplished by someone they "connect" with.

So what who cares. How bout they just elected a mayor. Does anyone care if he is Gay or Straight. I mean seriously if they only elected him on the grounds that he is gay than I think the world is in trouble. Hey we dont care if you are qualified or if you can do the job but your gay so yaaaaay!!!! Really!!!!

how did that happen? i thought most of that state was tea baggers? no offense no any normal thinking kentuckians out there

    10. 10

      omg, and he's a hottttieeeee!!!

      winky face ;-)

    11. 11

I'm from Lexington and we're very proud of this guy. ^_^

    12. 12

Yeaaaa!!! At least I have one thing to be proud of as a Kentuckian. Lexington (because of the University) is a more liberal city than you can find in most of Ky (outside of maybe Louisville). I have to say I am utterly embarrassed that Rand Paul was elected!!!!!!! WTF A man who said that the Civil Rights Act shouldn´t have been passed!! I think of my relationship with my state (and the US in general) as one like the black sheep of the family. They mostly fuck up even though you always have the highest hopes for them and love them no matter what. And though you get pissed because they fuck up every once and a while they come through for you and restore your faith.

    13. 13

I love the fact that Perez only discusses this newly elected mayor because he is gay - and didn't bring up a SINGLE stance this guy has on any topic.

Perez Hilton - proving that not everyone should be allowed to vote 1 post at a time.

    14. 14

OMG NO we are NOT all Teabaggers! Ha! Yes, somehow we elected an openly gay mayor, buy still voted Rand Paul into office…strange I know…but I couldn't be more thrilled for Jim Gray! He's a wonderful person, very intelligent and most importantly cares so much about this city and it's people! Yes, he's gay and in a state like this it should be commended that he was able to be elected! Great job to you Jim, and good for us!!! Now if we can just spread the tolerance to the rest of the state and elect people on merrit, not lifestyle, we would almost be perfect!

    15. 15

Re: hcoboy – We're definitely not all teabaggers here in Kentucky. Lexington actually has a huge gay population, and like most states, the larger cities here are pretty liberal. It's the backwoods hillbillies that ruin progress.

    16. 16

Mayor Gray will do a great job for our city! Lexington should also be proud that, although this was a tough campaign with a lot of harsh talk on issues and governing records from both sides, sexual orientation was never brought up as a major issue. Our longtime state senator (now appointed as a judge) Ernesto Scorsone is also openly gay, and was elected and re-elected many times. There were a lot of fights about the issues in this campaign - spending, city planning and council votes - but we can be proud that this campaign was run on the issues, not candidates' personal lives.

    17. 17

      …and Rand Paul…wtf?!

      Kentucky, I am confused.

    18. 18

I don't know what anyone's fucking sexuality has to do with anything they do, say or feel. Unless it's hypocritical or particularly sensational, a person's sexuality is hardly newsworthy.

Wow…really, the whole point of Perez's blog (if I may try to discern it) is just that it shows a state that is not known for having progressive thought made a a very progressive decision. As a Lexingtonian I assure you we did not vote for him "because he is gay" it is just exciting that we voted for diversity, tolerance and openess. Oh, and this comment is from a non-gay white woman who has no stake in the gay "issue" but simply believes in people living a life that makes them happy no matter who it is with.

p.s. the comments that refer to "pole smokers" and "cock suckers" were likely
written by very angry closeted homosexuals…get over it.

    20. 20

This is one of the few times I'm proud to live in this state. Now if only we could get rid of Rand Paul!

    21. 21

yes it does rock!! im so proud of my hometown of lexington ky! :)
