Keith Olbermann Suspended From MSNBC Indefinitely

keith olbermann suspended from msnbc

After donating money to three Democratic candidates before the elections, MSNBC has suspended host Keith Olbermann.

The network has a rule against political donations, as they feel it is a breach of journalistic independence to contribute to the candidates they cover.

Olbermann said:

“One week ago, on the night of Thursday October 28 2010, after a discussion with a friend about the state of politics in Arizona, I donated $2,400 each to the reelection campaigns of Democratic Representatives Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords. I also donated the same amount to the campaign of Democratic Senatorial candidate Jack Conway in Kentucky.

I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level."

At least he admits it, but the head of the network isn't happy!

Phil Griffin, President of MSNBC, stated:

"I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay."

Sad. Wonder if he's coming back!

He donated pennies as an individual - NOT LIKE FOX DONATED 1 MILLION TO THE GOP!!! Report correctly!

I am really GETTNG SICK OF THIS SITE!!!

  2. 2

    Another liberal bites the dust.

  3. 3

i cry foul! other reporters at msnbc made contributions to republican candidates and this was ignored.

  4. 4

I'm not a fan of Olbermann, but this is kinda BS. I could see if he had a show that actually tried to be impartial, or was straight news, but he has a editorial type program. His views are expressed everyday, just as those on FOX.

If anything, Phil Griffin should suspend himself for havning Olbermann, and the other mouthpieces at MSNBC anchor election night coverage. Now that was a joke, and straight up bias coverage. Even fox had actual journalists anchor their coverage. Could you imagine the outrage if Glenn Beck, Bill O, Hanity, and Sarah Palin anchored election night on fox? Well thats basically what msnbc did.

  5. 5

Glad to see this idiot suspended. He has no business doing political commentary. His tirades and comments lower the political discourse and offers nothing in terms of a meaningful debate. I would venture to guess that this was the networks escape from his contract terms since his show's ratings were in the toilet-actually they were lower than the toilet more like the sewage system that collects all of the waste.

  6. 6

I heard a San Fran based radio show host say weeks ago that MSNBC had been trying to get rid of this turd for years. They couldn't because he's "mentally disabled" (his words). Oh, and Keith is known to "wet" his seat.

  7. 7

Maybe Fox will hire him. lol.

  8. 8

Great news. What an asshole. The most annoying man on TV next to Chris Matthews and that other dude Rachel Madow

  9. 9

Love how the obviously unintelligent right wingers are happy about this since they don't believe in any other opinions being represented in media besides those of their friends over at the propaganda machine Fox. Joe Scarborough also donated to candidates, but republican ones, creating a very interesting double standard. I hope Keith is reinstated soon.

  10. 10

    Re: yumba1 – kill yourself

  11. 11

Rules are rules, kiddos. The democrats love to break them and then bad mouth republicans for every little misstep. I can't stand this loser or PMSNBC, so good riddance. Olberman, out…..now hopefully Maddow will be next. Conservatives Rock!!!! Taking the country back….it is a beautiful thing.

  12. 12

    donated money to democrats? SHOCKER

  13. 13

Re: bbtaddpole – michael savage hates anyone who makes more money than him. he's sad worse about people in his own party.

  14. 14

Never liked him. Never liked his views. Glad to see that left-leaning MSNBC still has some balls left in the sack to suspend him.
Then again, it's also HYPOCRITICAL of MSNBC to suspend a commentator (he's not an anchor) as they promote themselves being a liberal, left-leaning, (usually ignored) cable channel.

  15. 15

Re: scarytimes – joe scarborough and pat buchanan work at msnbc and made contributions to republicans yet they remain…employed. msnbc hasn't followed that rule for three years. check your facts. it might be a nice change of pace for you. dumbass teabagger.

  16. 16

This is just an excuse…MSNBC wanted to get rid of him b/c of the poor ratings….they were last during election night…Fox had over 7 million viewers and MSNBC only had 1.2 million viewers and besides he sounds like a lunatic on the show anyway.

  17. 17

  18. 18

    He'll be back. No worry.

  19. 19

I seem to remember hearing him chastise Fox news for thier donations to the GOP. I don't care who he donated money to he is a hypocrite.

  20. 20

The difference between this and FOX is that Keith is an individual employee of a company that has rules against this. Rupert Murdoch in charge of FOX can do whatever the hell he wants and contribute to whoever he wants because he is the boss. Now if FOX has this same rule for employees and someone breaks it, then they should get the same treatment. But rules are rules over at NBC and they did the right thing!

  21. 21

I think it had more to do with all too honest and truthful comments on the wackjob canidates that he spent the 10 minutes of his show on Monday giving factual adn dead history of the republican and teabaggers

  22. 22

Seriously… this is exactly what he wanted.. publicity for his contribution.. Wow, a celebrity that does something that benefits only them… really, if you think about it, I am right.

  23. 23

And take that dyke Rachel Maddow with you.

  24. 24

Many of Perezs's fans DO NOT support MSNBC's bias especially during the last 2 election cycles. Keith O should have stayed with ESPN where he was entertaining.

  25. 25

Many of Perezs's fans DO NOT support MSNBC's bias especially during the last 2 election cycles. Keith O should have stayed with ESPN where he was entertaining. Perez - stay out of politics, stick to celebrity gossip.

  26. 26

Guess MSNBC doesn't pay enough for a decent-fitting suit?

  27. 27

Everyone is entitled to their views. We know Hannity's, Bill O'Reilly's, Chris Matthews, and Keith Olbermans. Really and truly, I don't care what or who he contributes to, keep in mind, he's no George Soros, as far as the dollars go. But his brand of commentary is sickening, he is mean spirited, demeaning and nasty. I listened to him a few times and he always ends up spewing poison and vitriol. After a couple times, I don't even pay attention to him. Maybe his ratings are in the crapper because others feel the same way.

  28. 28

    Re: hotelslut – DIAF

  29. 29

Re: sonnybono – HAHAHA dumbass left winger can't handle losing!!! What a waste of space and air.

  30. 30

This story definitley has an aggenda, its designed to make America feel like they beat the bad guys in Government and there taking the media whores down with em. And as a non partisan I'm not gonna fall for this and become complacent with my Government, because the 2 party system is a ruse.

  31. 31

Re: electrochris – Not one person at Liberal Commie Central MSNBC would give a penny to Republicans.

  32. 32

Sad? Not sad! The guy is a biased jackhole and deserved to be suspended years ago.
He's NOT a journalist! He's a shill for the Democrats.
Ha! I remember when he was a local sports guy in LA.

  33. Pisky says – reply to this

Re: mw – False, where did you get those stats, MSNBC the most hilariously biased network ever?Re: girlfriend – Uhh no, he insults O'reilly daily because he's an asshat, and like others at MSNBC he's incredibly left wing and stupid, For the record extremism on either side of the political spectrum is stupid, sadly though extreme liberals are the majority in news programs & Entertainment.

  34. Pisky says – reply to this

Re: sonnybono – People like you, i just don't get, watch Oreillys show just ONCE, and learn something, on a DAILY basis he swats down retards like yourself who just twist and turn, and manipulate words, and take them out of context to say fox is a "cheerleader" for the GOP, meanwhile MSNBC is far more left wing than Fox will ever be right wing, please grow a fucking brain, let me guess you like Bill maher right? the most ignorant piece of shit walking the planet, die, or don't vote, either way you benefit the nation a lot.

  35. 35

Why do all the lib commentators foam and spit when they talk? It's disgusting and may partially explain their low viewership. Glad to see this idiot leave.

  36. 36

I liked him, he's smart articulate and has honest and good facts to back up what he says unlike a lot of the people at Fox. I say bring him back

  37. 37

Praise the Lord! Olbermann is the biggest prick on tv; his rants are delusional, overbearing, mean-spirited, immature, and most of all: BORING.

  38. 38

and I felt a thrill going up my leg when I heard about this.

  39. 39

Re: Pisky – Re post #34 What a typical liberal you are! You liberals just LOVE using the R word. Maybe it's cuz your worthless janitor of a president makes fun of Special Olympians so lemmings like yourself follow suit.

  40. 40

When Comcast takes ownership of NBC you will see PMSNBC taking a completely different direction and tone.

  41. 41

Re: electrochris – That's completely uncalled for and inappropriate in its very nature. Asshole.

  42. 42

Re: mw – You're so right. I wish Perez (or whoever he pays to write his news updates) would spend a few more minutes researching the issues first.

Hey, Perez, I need a job, and I have a Master's Degree. I'm a fantastic researcher with a decent command of the English language and its grammatical rules. Hire me!

  43. 43

I'm so happy to hear this America-hating jerkoff is off the air. Maybe he can go to CNN now that they lost their resident dumbfuck named Rick Sanchez. Either way, this is great news for conservatives, Republicans and true Americans. This week has been going so well. The Dems lost the House but they still got the Senate so they'll be fucked in 2012 when everyone points out all the power the Dems had yet they still blew it. Barry = one term.

  44. 44

Re: electrochris – You're dead on electro. They don't enforce it and haven't since they decided to get more partisan. Scarborough contributed to his Republican friends and I think that was the impetus for the DADT policy. I think there's more to this; Olbermann is a ba*tard apparently and has said that Griffin isn't his boss. Guess Griffin decided to make the point.

  45. 45

    Boom, meh.

  46. 46

I think that violates his Constitutional rights, and it should be eliminated as a clause to any person's contract. Political contributions are a form of free speech.

  47. 47

Well, it turns out that conservative host Joe Scarborough not only donated more but also headlined a fundraiser for a candidate. Can you say "double standard"?

  48. 48

MSNBC's election night coverage was HORRIBLE and they got WORST ratings ever. I turned to CNN as it was like hours of The View without Elisabeth H. They are going to lose sponsors if they cannot keep viewers.

  49. 49

Chris Matthews was really rude and unprofessional to a female congresswoman on election night. Ratings proved the viewers do not like what they are doing at MSNBC. CNN is neutral.

  50. 50

I LOVE Keith and I hope they bring him back but I do understand rules are rules. I think the original rule is completely lame but oh well. Fingers crossed for him to come back or at least move on to better things.

  51. 51

Exactly he is a journalist and if covering any issue he should be reporting not taking sides, like other networks. It is hard to find a non bias network, though not perfect for finance info i look to this network. Or else this would be another fox, or other bias network. Not cool!

  52. 52

Re: electrochris – Oooooh you are scary!!! I guess you left your heart at home. Such a sweetheart! You given human a bad name

  53. 53

Thank you, God! Thank you that as I surf through channels I will NEVER (this loser is not coming back) again hear or see this obnoxious, BIG MOUTH again. I love it that this happened to him. What a loser idiot not to know his contract. I love it. It couldn't have happened to a better person. Wasn't he some kind of loser comic before? Maybe he can work at local bars for change money.

  54. 54

So a liberal working for a liberal media outlet donates money to a liberal and gets fired because that liberal company had rules against it. Whether they had overlooked this rule before or not, or whether they just used it to get rid of this liberal, WTF does that have to do with FOX? Or any conservative? Do liberals have to blame EVERYTHING on conservatives, FOX, or George W Bush?

  55. 55

When you're reporting serious news, not "ZOMG MYLEY GOT A HAIRCUT TEE-HEE" you could probably do your research and not just copy and paste what the network wanted you to read.

Research is key to reporting, and blogging is apart of that.

Maybe you should just stick to Myley ..

  56. 56

Ridiculous. A contribution from an individual AS an individual. Does one relinquish their civil liberties when acting as a messenger?

  57. 57

Re: scarytimes – As a conservative, you shouldn't like this idea.

  58. 58

Re: mw – I know. Its hard. Perez/Mario does not follow politics or facts correctly, if at all. In response to the Keith Olbermann suspension : BYE ASSHOLE!!!!

  59. 59

  60. 60

This is not about politics it is a matter of policy.

  61. 61

This is the best news I've heard all week. And the worst person in the world is…

  62. 62

Keith, Chris Matthews, Joy & Whoppi, etc all are exactly why the country is sick of liberals. All they do is attack personally and make up lies. (i.e. Grayson in Florida)

They all need to get booted off the air simply for lying. State the facts and back it up with proof. If you can't do that then shut your pie hole.

  63. 63

That's such a dumb, arbitrary rule. Olbermann, like Rachel Maddow, like Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, etc. are commentators who have an open and obvious political leaning. They're not reporters or journalists in the traditional sense. Everyone knows who Olbermann votes for and roots for during elections. It's no secret.

  64. 64

Also, I find it funny that anyone would get upset about Olbermann, as an independent person, making a couple small donations to democratic candidates, but think it's perfectly fine for Fox News as an entity to fund and promote tea party events.

  65. 65

He is wonderful and I hope this suspension is a short one…not much of a crime considering all others in his field.

  66. 66

are you fucking serious. Its not like its a secret that he was a democrat… he was one of the good ones. America, you guys are really fucking yourselves over.

  67. 67

I'm a right wing tea bagger and think this is ludicrous. Keith's views have been well known for years. NBC is trying paint their evening talkers as journalistic when everyone knows they are opinion. Suspending Keith in no way changes that fact. Everyone knows what MSNBC is. Their parent and president should own what they refuse to admit. Personally, I enjoyed watching MSNBC's election night coverage. Nothing makes my heart flutter like watching liberals hyperventilate.

  68. 68

The difference between Olbermann and Scarborough is, Scarborough got permission before donating. Olbermann did not.

  69. 69

Re: gilliandawe91 – We're Americans. We'll do whatever the fuck we want to do. We don't need to hear it from moronic foreigners from shitbox countries. What shitbox country do you call home, anyway?

  70. 70

keith you have to be smart enough to follow the rules.he was supposed to let the network know he was going to donate to campaigns.more proof he is just a smooth idiot.

  71. 71

    Good! He's an asshole!!!

  72. 72

Re: giarretti – Well said. I am not Republican, and I agree with you- you explained the point the way it is supposed to be explained without blaming or attacking anyone. He broke the rules- plain and simple. Whether I liked him or not, or whether a network wanted to get rid of him before or not, the rules are the rules.

  73. 73

    Re: Bushwack

It's interesting to note that liberals ignore msnbc while conservatives treat Fox news as gospel. I wonder what that means? lol.

  74. 74

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – Maybe you could outsource all of your explosive anger to another country yourself….just because someone is American does not make us right or smart. BTW, people who have explosive reactions are scientifically known to have lower IQ's. Just saying….

  75. uyeah says – reply to this

SAD??? Why? He is not a journalist in any sense of the word. He's just a rabid, and i mean that literally, cheerleader for communism. Donations can be made by anyone, you excitable liberals, but MSNBC made it clear their reporters had to run it by them first. He didn't. Foxnews always has bonafide 'liberals' on, on EACH and every show, yet you idiots, who have never watched it, drag out the standard liberal tag lines against it all the time. When have any of the Pravda networks done the same??

  76. uyeah says – reply to this

Re: gilliandawe91 – Fucking ourselves over for getting rid of a person who deserves to be fired? Oh yeah, getting rid of him will have such a major impact on America. thanks for your wisdom.

  77. 77

This is crazy it is not like it was huge amounts of money. I love Keith he may be very Liberal but at least he backs up what he says and doesn't speak a bunch of lies like FOX….If they get rid of Keith they are going to lose a large fan base me included.

  78. 78

Strange that Joe Scarborough, also an MSNBC employee, has donated in the past, but he still has a job. Sounds like a double standard to me.

  79. 79

Re: Natanya – Take your liberal rhetoric somewhere else. America is top dog in the world cuz of our explosive anger. It started with the Indians then we told the English to go fuck themselves. We exploded with anger on June 6th, 1944 and go ask super old Japanese peeps about our explosive anger on Aug 6th and Aug 9th of 1945.

  80. 80

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – It isn't liberal rhetoric, it is just intelligent commentary. You have no self control, and you make no sense. Are you on medication? Or parole?

  81. 81

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – P.S. you might want to look up studies on Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotional Intelligence. You might find someone who looks shockingly familiar to you in those articles….

  82. 82

Great Job Phill!!!!!what took you so long, while you at it Ms maddow, and dont forget Chris. clean up the mess show those jerks who is the Boss

  83. 83

Thanks for trying to help Keith!!

  84. 84

Keith will probably end up having his own show in HLN alongside with Joy Behar ad Nancy Grace…they almost have the same low ratings so he should fit well there.

  85. 85

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – Re. post #69 Your such a hateful fool."We're Americans. We'll do whatever the fuck we want to do". It's because of stupid fucks like you with egos much bigger than their brains that this country is in such a mess. And now the sheeple have voted back in the some party that fucked them. Unbelievable. Hey smart ass, who did you vote for on the 2nd. Would love to hear what candidates you thought could help us out of this mess the republicans put us in.

  86. 86

Re: Natanya – LOL You seem to be REALLY obsessed with mental illness and psychiatry. You do know that people who are interested/obsessed/students of and degree holders in psychiatry and psychology are disproportionately mentally ill compared to the rest of the population, right? Look it up. The stats aren't wrong. LOL It's like if I kept ranting about fire then accused you of being a pyromaniac. But, of course, you're a liberal so you can't help yourself.

  87. 87

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – Re. post #69 Hey idiot, before you start bad mouthing other countries you might consider that America is not even considered one of the top 5 most prosperous countries in the world. You have some nerve calling foreigners moronic and describing their countries as shitboxes
Top 10 most prosperous countries in the world (the U.S. doesn’t even crack the top 5!)
For those who value their freedom of expression as much as health, wealth, and prosperity, then Finland is the place to be, with an index ranking the Nordic nation the best in the world.

The 2009 Legatum Prosperity Index, published on Tuesday and compiled by the Legatum Institute, an independent policy, advocacy and advisory organization, ranked 104 countries which are home to 90 percent of the world's population.

The index is based on a definition of prosperity that combines economic growth with the level of personal freedoms and democracy in a country as well as measures of happiness and quality of life.

With the exception of Switzerland, which came in at number 2, Nordic countries dominated the top 5 slots, with Sweden in third place followed by Denmark and Norway.

The top 10 were all also Western nations, with Australia (6th place) and Canada (7th place) both beating the United States, ranked 9th. Britain came in at number 12.

  88. 88

Why is it sad and not suspicious? Oh wait maybe THAT'S WHY no one watched their show!

  89. 89

Actually, this isn't about anyone at FOX donating money to the GOP.

It is AGAINST POLICY at NBC (a separate network than FOX). Therefore, regardless of what other stations allow their anchors to do, NBC DOES NOT allow them to donate money to any political party.

It's quite alright that you do not support FOX news (as you shouldn't really support any major news network due to obvious bias throughout), however when you bash FOX or anything for that matter, for no other reason than to bash them, it doesn't do your case justice. Instead try learning the facts before you open your mouth and make yourself look extremely uninformed.

  90. 90

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – I don't hold a degree in Psychiatry, but I work very successfully in the court system and can peg a nut from 1000 yards. You mistake MUCH higher education than your own for liberalism…I bet you never graduated high school, did you? Are you so obsessed with an opposing point of view that you have to pidgeonhole people into only one category so you can mentally handle it and rail against them with your little fist in the air? What a sad little person you are. Oh, You might want to add Delusions of Grandeur and Paranoia to your list. …and a child pic of Ryan Seacrest? Probably a Pedophile too.

  91. 91

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – you are nuts .

  92. 92

Oh, for Christs sake! Bring him back! There is something else going on here.

  93. 93

Re: JennyJJJ – CORRECT on all accounts, Jenny JJJ

  94. 94

Re: Natanya – You work successfully in the court system? What does that mean? Are you a court reporter in Detroit? Lots of court cases and shit to type out there? No, you've probably been 51/50'd a few dozen times and you're projecting again. Sad. Sad. Get better, bb!

  95. 95

Re: miss hot mess – Really? Really, asswipe? The last post you wrote before your moronic post here was asking if anyone would care if Tom Cruise died doing some stunt for a movie. THAT'S FUCKING CRAZY! I don't wish for people to die. THAT'S fucking nuts. Seriously, nuts. That would be awful if Tom Cruise had died doing that stunt. He's got three kids. Scientology or no, that's just too cruel for me. Not for your psycho ass, though

  96. 96

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – You do know this is a celebrity gossip site don't you? No need for your real/true American BS, political poopery, and irrational anger. You take this commenting shit TOOSERIOUSLY! Calm down man.

As a journalist, he knows better.
He's become his own worst person in the world.

  99. 99

Total madness. Give the guy his job, not a surprise he's a liberal. Fox is a pure propaganda machine with nothing but hired Republicans, MSNBC is not even the opposite and should let this one slide because if they lose Olbermann they lose one of their best.

  100. 100

Re: Eldridge Cleaver – 51/50? Projecting? Way too familiar with certain terms of court and psychiatry yourself, eh? Seems like I hit a nerve with the lack of education and pedophelia….i knew it…Oh yes…I am a court reporter…that is hilarious! Boy- you sure a a mental case. Later Hater….
