Italian-Americans Have Found New Show To Hate On!

Oh come on now! This is ridiculous! Calm down, already!

Italian-American group Unico National wants VH1 to axe their new show, My Big Friggin' Wedding. They are accusing the network of once again of perpetuating a stereotype of young guidos Italian-Americans.

Andre DiMino, chief media executive and past national president of Unico, has come forward to publicly slam Sally Ann Salsano, who acts as executive producer on the show as well as another fave of the organization's, The Jersey Shore.

Miz DiMino released a statement denouncing all of Miz Salsano's contributions to reality television, stating:

"Stereotyping and slurring young Italian Americans means big, big bucks for bottom-feeder networks like MTV and VH1. No one does this better than Salsano, who's done more harm to the perception of young Italian Americans than everyone before her, combined. It's hard to believe, but Salsano actually tops the damage she did to the Italian American community with Jersey Shore with her newest pile of garbage on VH1."

Hey, sticks and stones, lady!

Fact is, Sally's just pointing the camera. These kids are doing all the rest!

Seems to us you're just embarrassed by your own kind! How's about you quit going after the networks for putting on these shows and reach out the actual people on them to ask why they act they way they do?!

Betcha a pickle pizza they say it was just how they were raised though! Salute!

Why is it that you tell these people to stop complaining about stereotypes when you cried about the trailer for Vince Vaughn's comedy when they made a joke about driving a prius being gay. The gay community is so full of sensitivity and hypocrisy that it's hard to take them seriously.

  2. 2

I swear I was watching this show and a black guy was on it…..marrying who I believe is a hispanic woman…………both of whom have nothing to do with italians……….

  3. 3

Oh, that's rich coming from you.

"Seems to us you're just embarrassed by your own kind!"

  4. 4

I didn't know all Italian people were Guidos. half the people on Jersey Shore aren't even Italian. STFU, perez.

Your hypocrisy really gets to me sometime, Perez. You call for justice and equal treatment of all peoples, but it really seems you only care if that equality and respect is directed at the LGBT community. The ridiculous actors in these shows are just that, ACTORS. I am sure they are ridiculous people in real life, but their Italian blood is not what makes them ridiculous. It IS a stereotype and it shows how widespread that stereotype when people like you make ignorant statements like, "Sally's just pointing the camera." She is a producer. Not a director. A producer helps in many aspects of the creation of a show, including idea development. Everyone involved with such a show, even the viewers, are at fault for feeding such stereotypes, but Mrs. Salsano was one of the people the start it, and has also written episodes for the show. Stop being a hypocrite, Perez, and start caring about all people, and don't just pick and choose the people you think deserve respect.

This really is absolutely ridiculous. Hasn't this already been done like a dozen times before?

  7. 7

How can you say "calm down"? If this show was stereotyping gays, you would be the first to stand against it. You are so annoying.

  8. 8

wow perez, i thought you were gonna stop being a bully? the insensitive things you've written on this really made me question why i even read your webstie. the fact is that some people are fame whores who will do anything to get on tv - example 1 - snooki. i love her but shes not even italian and she is still influencing the credibility of all ilatian americans. its wrong that you even posted this seeing as your all for non-discrimination .. guess that only comes into play when it has to do w gays though, right? you should be ashamed. and fyi - "pickle pizza" is seriously the stupidest racial stereotype i've ever even heard seeing as the pickle your referring to originates from snooks - whos chiliean. so ignorant seriously.

What?? Can you say hypocritcal. So we can perpetuate racial stereotypes but not gay ones? We can't say "that's gay" in a scripted movie and we can't say the word tranny anymore

  11. 11

Reality shows are not real. They are scripted and made to be as dramatic as possible to pull in the ratings. Sure, some Italian people are assholes. So are some gay people, some yellow people, some purple people, some skinny people, some fat people. There are assholes in all walks of life and it has nothing to do with what color skin you have or where your parents came from.

It's a tv show. A fake TV show. The less of a scene we make about it maybe the less that people will pay attention and get better taste in entertainment.

  12. 12

I agree… These Italian groups need to focus more on getting their own community to stop perpetuating the stereotypes rather than the networks that are just filming and airing their antics!

  13. 13

What I've learned is that Italian-Americans, especially those residing on the East Coast of the Nation do a pretty good job of making themselves look bad, it's just that in this case, some of them do it in front of the cameras.

  14. 14

This is so fucking stupid. Seriously I agree with April20th for once in my life. This show is not called my big fat italian friggin wedding, there are spanish, hatian, and many other types of people on this show. They need to get ahold of their egos, they look ridiculous now.

  15. 15

I rarely leave comments but I really feel this is so obsurd. To say, "seems you're just embarrassed by your own kind" is simply comical. So many communities have been on the wrong end of jokes , discrimination, and stereotypes. Having many friends of all sexual orientations, nationalities, and races I know it's just easier to laugh along with it. But this type of hypocracy coming from such a staple in the entertainment industry is worse than seeing Lindsay Lohan at a D.A.R.E convention. No network is going to film what a REAL normal Italian is like because that isn't going to get ratings. No matter the background, they all play on 'what's hot right now' and put the most ridiculous people who fit the description on the air. Right now, the Jersey Shore is the biggest thing since latex condoms and everything "Jersey" will follow. On paper, I'd fit the stereotype! Italian girl form NJ worked in a pizzeria for 10 years big hair blah blah blah… but meet me in person and I've got more class in my pinky than the trash tv viewers want to entertain themselves with these days. I would submit every gay friend I have to try and get on Queer Eye…

The Italian Wedding thing is not a sterotype it's the truth. Truth is the bride is not the center of the universe. Most people invited to your wedding don't even want to be there. It's expensive, clothes hair gifts showers I would say babysitting, but the kids are included and tired and bratty. Its a horrible custom in these trying times. If you have that kind of money to waste help the underprivledged!

  17. 17

I'm sure it would be a different story from you if these shows were exploiting and stereotyping the LGBT or Cuban community!

  18. 18

It's 'Mizter' DiMino — Andre's a guy. And he's the nicest person you'll ever meet, unlike the people on these shows you're defending.

  19. 19

    fuck you perez.
as an italian i find these shows pathetic.
As a former employee of this network i can tell you they DONT just point the cameras.

  20. 20

Re: KrisInNYC – youre pathetic and clearly know nothing about television.
what 21 year old kid is gonna say no to a tv show about him/herself, regardless of whether or not they are being stereotyped.
    you must be a jew

  21. 21

Re: Nick Chiodini – you have no right to attack someone for stating their opinion and saying you must be a jew, you're pathetic. Douche.

  22. 22

So the Italians can't be pissed off about this… but the gays get pissed about everything! (when I say gays, I mean GLAAD)

  23. Adina says – reply to this

I bet none of these so called Italians are really born in Italy. They are Americans with roots in Italy. Stupid!

  24. 24

If this isn't a big deal, then neither would a tv show that perpetuates stereotypes of Latinos, African-Americans, or Asian-Americans. I'm sure that those TV shows would receive backlash, but because Italians are viewed as being of European descent suddenly that justifies it? It's equally as terrible. Italians faced a great deal of discrimination at the beginning of the 20th century, thus is the continuation through TV shows like this. Gross stereotypes.

  25. 25

I thought you were going to stop bullying, Perez.

Reality shows don't just point the camera: They edit content to be the most marketable, often misrepresenting people.

When you do this while focusing on a group of people - of any demographic - you create an unrealistic, stereotypic profile of them.

Italian-Americans have a right to object to this.

You can disagree with their objections, but can't you do it more respectfully?
