AGAIN?! Cher Calls Chaz A "Lesbian!"
Oh, Cher!
The legendary singer/actress was on The Late Show With David Letterman last night to promote Burlesque, and while discussing Chaz's recent render reassignment, she referred to him as a "lesbian!"
She said:
"She was a lesbian - she still is - but it's not the same now. She has a beautiful girlfriend. But it's not the same thing as being a homosexual, you feel as if you're in the wrong body."
You've got it half right, bb, but you can't use the word lesbian! Chaz is TRANSGENDER.
Obviously, for a multitude of reasons, we know you mean nothing by it, but still!
It takes getting used to, but please, bb, as an icon in the LGBT community, you need to make more of an effort!

I understand that Chaz in transgender but there is nothing wrong with Cher slipping… She had a girl for MANY years! That is a HUGE change.
Cher may be a gay icon but let her be on this one. She gave birth to a baby girl who lived as a girl for over 40 years and identified herself as a lesbian and then said she wanted to become a man. There are some parents who would have turned their back on their child but Cher is dealing with it in her own way. I don't blame her for being confused.
Don't be so hard on her. If you've called someone your daughter for so many years it's kinda hard to get used to refering to them as a he and as your son.
I don't think Cher is confused at all. She KNOWS she gave birth to a girl. That is still the same child. Having surgery doesn't change the fact that the daughter who came out of her body would still, in her eyes, be a girl. No amount of nips, tucks, and paper trails can change that.
She needs to fix that action, stat. Chaz is a man - so to refer to him as a "she" isn't even appropriate. He *was* a lesbian (past tense), sort of, when he was female - though even that is arguable, because apparently he's always been male, mentally. At this point he's a heterosexual man. It's not like this happened overnight - Cher's had plenty of time to get acclimated. Come on, Cher - what kind of a message of non-acceptance does that send to your son? Chaz - and all transgendered people - deserve to be respected and acknowledged as whichever gender(s) they identify with.

it's a learning curve. cut her some slack. i have a close friend who is transgendered. while i made the transition to her new name fairly easily, i still sometimes slip up and call her "he" when i reference her in conversation.

Im almost thirty years old, and my dad keeps calling me "baby girl" … and I will always be his "baby girl", so no matter what Chaz does, he will still be Cher´s baby girl.

I think that as the mother of a transgender person, she's allowed to be a little confused. She gave birth to a girl who is now a man. It must be weird for her. And she had a hard enough time wrapping her brain around the fact that her kid was gay to begin with, so I think it's nice that she can talk about it at all so casually now. She seemed a little nervous and almost like she felt like she had to be politically correct or something but she also wanted to be honest and she's still not really sure what to say.

I consider myself to be sort of saavy, but have never ever heard that you shouldn't call her a lesbian. She is still a woman who is into women. Yes, she's had a gender reassignment, but that doesn't change the fact that she was born a woman? Is there something I don't get?
Chaz was confused for years probably….so understably Cher is confused with the right wording. Either way, she was born a girl not a boy. She is "by nature" a girl. Born a girl, always a girl even if a Doctor changed her parts. It is totally fine changing it if it suits you/her, but when you peel back the layers we all know her true gender and I can see anyone having trouble using the correct wording.

Perez, you have to remember that when Cher gave birth to Chaz, that baby was A GIRL. And Cher will probably always see him as a girl, so it's not that surprising that she would call him a lesbian, because that's what he was his whole life before he got the sex change. She may be an icon to the LGBT community, but my feeling is that she still has some difficulty coming to terms with her daughter becoming a man, which is totally understandable IMO.

I think she's allowed to be confused. She was raised in a completely different time. And she's obviously trying and is supportive and loving to Chaz. I think if parents and everyone else aren't comfortable being honest about their feelings, whether they are confused or want and need information, it just perpetuates the ignorance. That's why we have people nowadays blowing up and just spouting off hate speech when they are drunk or angry, and we're all shocked…but in our society we still have so many prejudices, but no one is allowed to talk about them because everything has to be politically correct. But it is still there, beneath the surface. We are all way too touchy. I have lots of things about me that I could be offended by every time I saw something on TV. My thing is if I know it is not motivated by hate, just let it go. Or educate the person, kindly. I do think you're right that Cher should try to start calling Chaz as a 'he' and not a 'she', and not use the word lesbian, but at the same time she probably feels she is being disingenuous because that is not the 'truth' to her. We have to be free to be open and honest about these things or we'll never have a sincere, positive dialogue.

So what if she is confused as to how to refer to him. She pushed out a baby girl 40 yrs ago and that girl has just become a boy. That is alot for a parent to take in. Many parents would disown their children. Cher is very accepting of Chaz and she is trying her best. Chaz became a man May 2010, but was a woman from 1969 up until that point. Sorry but a few months doesn't erase 40 years of a mother's memories. A slip of the tongue and a bit of confusion doesn't make her non-accepting. She is trying. She actually made me cry last night with her discussion about Chaz. She was so honest, so raw, so 'calm,' as she put it - there was something very real and raw about the way she spoke. Very loving and accepting. As cool as Cher is, she's still a 64-year-old mom who had to come to terms with the fact that her 'daughter' was now going to be her 'son.' No matter how accepting and nonjudgmental and whatever else you want to say you are, that has to be a difficult thing for any parent. Just that you had this beautiful little girl and now that person is your handsome son. And after 40 years. I can imagine I'd trip over the pronouns and terminology a little myself too.
You cannot know how you would react to something until that happens to you - and Perez, you will never be a mother with a child going through this. So sit down and shut up and let Cher work through this on her own pace. I for one think she's doing a tremendous job and am more inspired than ever by her and by her discussion last night. I think when Chastity originally came out as a lesbian, Cher's acceptance made a lot of parents her age pause and be more accepting. I can only hope and pray and imagine that people saw her last night and are more accepting of transgender people now because of it too.
I suspect Cher knows more than you do about the situation. It is hardly your place to correct her.

However, though the official gender change occurred in 2010, Chaz has been living as a man and transitioning for several years now. It's more than enough time to get used to referring to her former daughter in the way he has viewed himself for a long time. I have a grown child too, and her identity is her own - my years-old habit of viewing her in a certain way doesn't supersede her right to be perceived however she defines herself. If she ever wants to transition, I will totally support that. Obviously, this is between Cher and her son, but I think she'd be doing Chaz a service by making more of an effort in this department.

Who wouldn't be confused. I did watch a show once called "I am my own twin". It was unbelievable. Apparently, there are people walking around who have two sets of DNA. Apparently, when their mother was pregnant with them in the early stages of pregnancy, the other twin welded into the other twin. So this person has TWO sets of DNA. Maybe when Cher was carrying Chastity/Chaz, she was carrying twins, a boy and a girl. the girl and boy combined. That's why people like Chaz have always felt like a boy. Remember, she is NOT a hermaphrodite. Hermaphrodites have both male and female chromosones - XX and XY. That's not Chaz's problem. That's my possible theory anyway about what may cause transgender people.

I am sure this is impossible for Cher to get used to. Even if she was the most supporting mother in the world it would be. I know my ex MIL still can't believe she has a gay daughter-in-law.
