Steve Perry Returning To Journey?

journey-steve-perry-to-return.jpg

Perhaps, perhaps!

Steve Perry left Journey back in the 90s hoping to pursue a lucrative solo career, but now, over a decade later, he's looking to return as the band's frontman.

Why you might ask? Well, if you have to ask, then you obviously haven't watched Glee.

Since the show covered their hit song, Don't Stop Believin', the band has seen a revival of their music on the charts.

Revival = $$$

But just because he wants to come back, doesn't mean that he will, if we take founding member Neal Schon's hostility at face value. He told sources:

"[Steve] seems to be enjoying the spotlight a little too much. The fact is he's no longer the lead singer. He walked out."

Very true, but is there really no room for bygones to be bygones?

Would U like to see Steve rejoin the group?

the journey "revival" started when "don't stop believing" was featured on the last episode of the sopranos. duh

  2. 2

    Oh God!…please…no

  3. 3

I though Family Guy started the revival

  4. 4

I don't care who founded the group. I hate to enlighten Mr Schon, but Steve Perry IS JOURNEY.

  5. 5

Neal Schon is a brilliant song writer and in real life and not "(mis)quote" world I have heard him wish the guy(perrY) well even wondering why steve didn't sing at the world series. I guess this does generate more buzz for them and any publicity is good. I guess it is true NOTHING you see is real. Not that i was taking what I saw on Perez as the gospel.

  6. 6

    Hell ya,love his vocal ability.

  7. 7

Sucks for the Filipino dude that took his place. He was spot on!

  8. 8

Wow, has no one seen Journey's Behind the Music? According to that and in Steve's own words, he didn't leave; he was forced out.

  9. 9

Oh Hell NO! I heard the band doesn't want him back he walked out on them and left them to go broke but to his dismay they found a guy on the internet that could sing just like him, even better! I would give him my middle finger and move on.

  10. 10

Not because of stupid glee, maybe after the giants won the world series and he had a blast singing "lights" and believing in between innings at giants games he's got the itch to get the band back together. 45k people singing lights at a world series game is! is! I cant describe it.

  11. 11

Well it's gotta be a whole lot better than what he is doing now. To quote… Perry has recently re-kindled a childhood interest in cattle and dairy farming and currently has an interest in a small bovine insemination business in the Central Valley. Moooooooooooo!

  12. 12

    YES, YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

  13. 13

Steve Perry can't sing. He lost his voice. I don't believe it.

  14. 14

journey needs to get over themselves. (van halen, anyone?) steve perry IS the voice of journey. and arnel pineda is just an american idol close-second.

  15. 15

    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. 16

    What about Arnel Pineda?

  17. 17

Wait. Isn't Steve Perry a raging racist? Read pages 93 and 94 of Sarah Silverman's book, "The Bedwetter." The guy has some major issues (that don't involve cheesy 80's music).

  18. 18

Re: Unitedfan1 – He has no voice. Just because you sing in a crowd doesn't mean he can sing anymore. Did you hear him when he tried to sing alone after the Red Sox won? It was embarrassing. Poor guy lost his voice and why he quit Journey and his solo career.

  19. 19

Please God let Steve return to Journey. Please God let them make a new album. And please God let them come to my city. Amen.
    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I agreed with LoveBob and Pinky. Steve Perry IS Journey. I never liked Arnell Pinhead or Pinata or whatever his name was.
    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
    Don't stop believing!!!!!

  20. 20

    a lot of musicians/people are racists…..get over it….

  21. 21

If you read the San Francisco Chronicle, you would know Perry isn't a racist:

Silverman refused to name names in her interview with Playboy magazine, but hinted that the "onetime lead singer of a very popular band from the 1980s" was Perry, joking, "I'll just say this: After that, I stopped believin'," which the rocker took as a reference to the Journey hit "Don't Stop Believin'."

She claimed the mystery man approached her after a show and said, "You're my favorite comedian - you have the best (n-word) jokes."

But Perry wasn't laughing when he read the article, insisting he has never used the "n-word."

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I'm really shocked. She was so friendly and so nice. I don't understand why she would go there, it's so bizarre. I don't use that word, are you kidding? That's so derogatory.

  22. 22

There is no Journey without the amazing Mr. Perry!

  23. 23

You get your sources from wikipedia or something? Steve Perry first off left the group in the 80's to do a solo career, not the 90's. And he rejoined the band back in the 80's. In the 90's they were getting ready to go on tour and do to reoccurring back issue, he had to go get surgery. Instead of waiting the 6 weeks for recovery time, the other bandmates kicked him out of the group. Anyone who watched Behind the Music back in the day knows that!

  24. 24

    Best voice ever!

  25. 25

    Steve Perry, "The Voice"

  26. 26

"left Journey back in the 90s hoping to pursue a lucrative solo career"

    Incorrect.

First, the original news story (in the Daily Sun, mind you, not the most reliable source) did not include the word "lucrative." I suspect snark! Be nice.

Second, the point is moot because he did NOT leave in 1998 to pursue a solo career, lucrative or otherwise. He left in 1998 because they all got pissed off at each other. His intention was, at that time, to pursue NO career… in which case his lack of lucrativity would have to be seen as a marker of success!

  27. 27

I think it would be incredibly wrong of the band to accept that guy back in after taking in Arnel. Arnel has an amazing voice and he is a great positive energy for them…i am sure the past conflict that led to the lead singer's departure will guarantee that he will not be returning to the band.
it is insulting of him to assume that just because he wants back in that they would be lucky to have him, and desperate to welcome him back and kick Arnel to the curb.
Shows his character and reasons for returning right there…he is all about money and ego.

The band will not be any more successful with him than they are now with Arnel. In fact, Arnel is younger and has more energy than that old guy would have.
I thought the band was really cool for giving someone a chance the way they did…it shows their character.

  28. 28

It kills me to know just how much an TRUE ASS you are. Know your facts before posting Mario! Your credit score gets lower by each passing day with your incorrect information. AND YOU'RE STILL A FAT SLOB! PERRY NOT RETURNING TO JOURNEY: There are widespread media reports online today attributed to a news item posted online, suggesting that Steve Perry had reached out to his former Journey band mates to rejoin the band.
These reports are 100% false. There has been no contact between parties and Journey has a new studio album with vocalist Arnel Pineda due early 2011 and a full touring schedule planned through 2012.
Any such rumors of Steve Perry's return are to be disregarded.

  29. 29

Seen the band w/Perry and Pineda and Arnel is a million times better than Perry was even in his prime. You can just see how much the band is having fun and how much Arnel LOVES being a part of the band and showing that to his audience, Steve Perry always came across as an entitled jerk, as if the audience should be thanking him that he showed up.
…and if you have listened to their greatest hits CD w/Perry and then rerecorded w/Pineda…Arnel IS the voice of Journey!

    30

Steve Perry…is Journey; beginning, middle, and end…of story. The new lead singer can sing backgrounds on the a new tour and album, but for this revival to be a hit, they will need Steve Perry on the lead!!! Short of that, it is only karaoke…at best!!!!

  31. Zip says – reply to this

    31

Steve Perry is no racist. He was joking, and his intentions, were intentionally misreported. He is the victim of slander. The man is Portuguese, BTW, meaning he has black blood.

  32. Zip says – reply to this

    32

BTW, Steve Perry gave the best performance on the "We Are The World" recording. He sang with the best singers in the world on that record, including Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson, and out sang them all. He is an elite singer!!! Journey's replacement singer does not have his chops. He tries to copy Perry as best he can, but he can't approach Perry's level of vocal brilliance, and stage presence, not even close. There is no contest!!!!

  33. 33

I love his voice, but just cause they're racking in more money is a bit low of him to want in on it.
But I want to say thanks to the Glee creator, the cast&crew for ruining their song and so many other classics, in flame because of the abuse of the songs. Who cares if it were on the Sopranos, they didn't tamper with it.
    But Thanks. It's well appreciated.

  34. 34

Re: RakelSpektakel – Yup, he's a big ole racist. No reason to bring him back. The new guy has an amazing voice.

  35. 35

Now if they can just get randy jackson back all of our prayers will be answered !

  36. 36

    OMGOSH he is 61!!!!

  37. 37

Sandra Bernhard was using it in her live shows BEFORE the Sopranos .

  38. 38

um PEREZ-I love u man, but you're totally WRONG about Journey having a recent surge in sales after the episode on "Glee"…Journey had a surge in sales after " Don't Stop Believin' " was used in the final scene in Holsten's Luncheonette of "The Sopranos" series finale. Common man, you have to know that- - you had a post about the finale in June of '07 when it premiered! Pleaseeee get that straight-I am a HUUUGE journey fan and have gone to 3 concerts in 2 years of theirs, therefore I would hope you would know that-get it straight for next time pleeeease love///

  39. 39

Arnel Pineda is Journey's lead singer now and should not be pushed aside.

  40. 40

There is no Journey (in my little opinion) unless Steve Perry is in the band.

Seems to be the same as if Led Zepplin were to try and tour without Robert Plant.

  41. 41

\\\i've also seen the band w/the philippino singer–he was pretty good actually. He sounds very very very close in relation to Steve Perry's voice. Many that aren't diehard fans tell me they cannot tell the difference. Now for me however, I can tell in a second but most can't and thats why he works so well. Regardless, Journey IS Steve Perry man! Everyone knows it. He does. The band does. The fans do. If he comes back, I believe everyone would tell him it was fked up he left but that would be that, and they would move on. Hope he comes back. Really do.///

  42. 42

    STEVE IS JOURNEY!

  43. 43

Wait a minute… what about Arnel? He's so good! And, yep!!! Steve Perry is, next to Freddy, probably the greatest voice in rock. But Arnel is also a powerhouse, and he's doing great for them. Furisheals, why did you find it necessary to insult Mario about his weight? He IS NOT "still fat", but if he was, what would that make you, for bringing it up like that? Be nice, why don't you? Your attitude diminishes your content.

  44. 44

    Yes, bring it on!

  45. 45

Steve Perry's voice is shot. He had problems hitting the high notes in the late '80s.

  46. 46

yes! i would love for steve to come back!that new guy they have has a great voice, but he doesn't anunciate everything correctly. im an actual fan(not from glee) and to hear that new guy sing is just not the same-seems like a 2nd rate act-sorry but true!

  47. 47

It's been reported for days that Steve never said any of this and that Neal Schon never said any of this. All made up. Mario get your facts straight.

  48. 48

Ive seen them a few years back with there new singer, and he dose more then ample enough voice power to replicate the Journey sound. So its not like theyd really miss Steve Perry!

  49. 49

Steve Perry IS Journey. Schon is an amazing musician but Perry has got to be one of the greatest male pop vocalists of ALL TIME! Journey has been nothing but a joke without him. I always thought he took the high road and left at the right time. To come back now, especially when he might not be in peak condition anymore, would be painful for everyone. Don't do it Steve! We all know you're the man. You don't need to prove anything!

  50. 50

    Steve Perry IS Journey..period

  51. 51

Re: No One Particular – No he didn't. I saw them several times in their prime, and Steve Perry was THE nicest out of all of them. He was/is genuine and cares about his fans.

  52. 52

As anyone who has been to a Journey concert in the last DECADE knows, Journey never went away. They continue to play to near capacity crowds all over the country. I'm quite fine with the current line up with Arnel on vocals.

  53. 53

Steve Perry is very possibly the classiest musician ever. Not to mention the possessor of one of the greatest voices of all time. If Journey wants to create the biggest buzz it has had in decades, bring Steve back on board. They will sell out twice the venues because we the fans would love to see Steve again! Even if he couldn't sing a note, and it was just an arena full of 20,000 singing along with Steve on old Journey tracks, I would be there.

  54. 54

hell to the ya! SF Native, love him!

  55. 55

Steve Perry-you ARE Journey!!! Come back, we've missed you like crazy!

  56. 56

That would be the only way I would ever see Journey! No one can replace Steve Perry.

  57. 57

Re: -Shootingstar- – Damn right !! Journey wasn't good enough for him before his departure so what's the difference now ? $$$$$ That's whats up !! I say stick with the Philippino he's fantastic and not greedy
Steve had his shot and he blew it !

  58. 58

I could die a happy woman if Steve Perry came back…..Lordy……makes me "smile"….heheh!

  59. 59

Re: kittykat3544 – I agree. It doesn't take long for a lot of their tour dates to say "sold out" next to them on their website. Their last 6 Detroit area shows all sold out. Not exactly a revival considering those shows were all before Glee even premiered.

Personally, I find Steve's more recent music boring as hell and I would be worried that he would suck the energy out of the band. Arnel made the live shows fun again.

  60. 60

No no no you have it all wrong. The Journey "revival" started when Stephen picked up LC in his car and he was listening to "Don't Stop Believing" on an episode of Laguna Beach. Literally the day after, the song went number one on iTunes, and thus, causing the resurgence of their popularity and a new generation of fans.

  61. 61

Please No??? let me tell u what its a NO NO: Last year I went 2 c Journey, and all I c was a COVER BAND in that stage…Why the hell they look 4 Perrys wanna b 2 sing in the band..cuz Perry IS the BAND….
*** Please take those wanna b out and bring Steve ASAP…cuz the las time It was a lie on stage…and I feel they steal my $$$.
    *** Pleople deserve good music & excellent singers..and That's STEVE PERRY..He IS fkng JOURNEY…FAITHFULLY!

  62. 62

Re: pattisullivan2 – It makes me so crazy upset that Mario(I will never call him by his silly made up name) has the nerve to post this as a fact before finding out if it's even true or not. That's just wrong. He does this all the time and no one says a word. I mean real people. The people with pull in this town. He calls people names. He gets off on insulting people. Making stupid little nick-names for anyone he chooses to. Drawing things on them! I can go on and on. He really tries to pass himself off as an honest reporter of then news. So when I get the chance to call him on his totality incorrect statements I'm going to show him what it feels to be made fun of. Like we were in 7th grade. The only difference here is if we were in 7th grade and he told a lie like that or called one of my friends a name, he'd get a sock in his schnozola. He thinks because he's online he can say what-ever he wants to without any repercussions. Well since I can't beat his ass for his big mouth I'm going to use the only thing I'm left with. My words. Someone has to put Mario in check. None of the celebs will. Bad press is still press in their eyes. If this was 1955 the Studio heads would be sending a large man in a black suit to visit him and school him on what to say and what not to say about their performers. I almost wish we could go back to those times. Ok I'm done. Answer your question?

  63. 63

seriously how can anyone like them?

  64. 64

NO!!!! He left the band and now the band is already moving on nicely with their new lead singer the Phillipino who can sing and has a powerful and beautiful voice. Journey doesn't need Steve Perry!!!! Sorry that's my opinion.

  65. 65

No Steve Perry= No Journey. The filipino guy is terrible.

  66. 66

Re: Zip – What do you mean he has black blood? LOL…Steve (Pereira) Perry is Portuguese through and through (from the Azores islands) and he is white as can be. Don't be an idiot.

  67. 67

i loved him back when… but really, too old… all of 'em! i'm the same age & i think it's a pathetic attempt when these former stars to ATTEMPT ti make a come back… they (and things) just ain't the same… listen to your journey cd's and let the younger generation have a chance!! we had OUR turn… what about the WHO when they played at the superbowl??? UGH! face it fellas, we JUST AIN'T got it like we used to HAVE IT… go to Tahiti & STOP BELIEVIN'!!
    :)
    Just sayin'!
Yeah, and what about that KID who sang BETTER than Perry??? Are they gonna ship him back to poverty? Just disgusted.

  68. 68

there is no Journey without Steve!

  69. auds says – reply to this

    69

Didn't they replace him already with a dude who sounds almost the same? I saw the new guy sing on Oprah. Apparently Perry is pretty easily replaceable.

  70. 70

Steve Perry is the voice of Journey. Nobody can compare… Wouldn't see that band without him.

  71. 71

Re: zoeknowsbest – The rest of the band is not making a comeback. Journey has been touring since 1998 without Perry. They had a different singer for years, Steve Augeri, and they put out a fantastic album in 2000. This new guy, Pineda, puts on an amazing show. His vocals are huge. But the rest of the band, Neil and John are so talented. And their drummer, Dean, who used to be with Ozzie Osbourne, and has been with them for ten years is out of this world and sounds more like Perry than Arnel, their singer. Dean sings several songs in the concert while drumming. Quite a show. They sell out all the time. Perry's voice couldn't handle those songs anymore.

  72. 72

That would be a huge NO!!!!! The guy they replaced him with from the Phillipines is fabulous and Steve Perry is no longer needed.

  73. 73

Re: L0_dezi – White Sox used the song in 1995 when they won the World Series

  74. 74

Hello! I guess everyone forgot that Journey was a smokin' SF band BEFORE Steve Perry. When Perry joined, they shifted from jazz rock to pop rock. It ruined the band experience for die hard fans of the ORIGINAL band. One of the best concerts I saw was Journey at the Old Waldorf in SF before Perry. They were right up there with the "Traffic" sound of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Dave Mason.

  75. 75

Sorry guys..Journey without Steve Perry is just not Journey. His voice is beyond comparison…..

  76. 76

Nobody wants to see Journey without Steve Perry it just doesn't work for me or anyone else….who the hell is Neal Schon other than stupid…Journey isn't Journey without the real Steve Perry and they know it–retards…they suck without him…it's like aerosmith without Steve Tyler duh

  77. 77

Re: AdelineRockette – Family Guy definitely did for me and most people I know.

  78. Dxxx says – reply to this

    78

I tried to watch the recently televised Journey concert and it was like watching a really good tribute band. Ugh, Neal Schon loves himselff so much…he was acting like Hendrix back from the dead. And it was just uncomfortable and spooky to see this gay, little Filipino sing. He is too much of a queen for this music, while the lyrics are cheesy, romance shit, the music is pretty tough for back then. The Filipino had outfit changes! He is good but there is nothing like the real thing.

I would pay my husband's hard earned money to see Journey with Steve.

  79. 79

    This would be great.

  80. 80

STEVE PERRY IS JOURNEY!!!! Enough said.

  81. 81

Steve Perry is a big part of Journey. It's not the same without him.

  82. 82

Arnel is good but he doesn't sing as good as Stevey boy. Arnel's 20 min of fame is over I think! Let's get Stevey back to Journey, his solo journey is over.
