David Hyde Pierce Talks About Coming Out And His Marriage

It took over twenty years for David Hyde Pierce and husband Brian Hargrove to go public with their relationship and now, two years after getting married in California (before the passing of Prop 8 ), David is opening up about coming out.

"It was very important to me never to pretend, never to hide. In 1985, my partner Brian and I were new in the business and were not comfortable letting people know that we were gay. We had separate apartments. We went about our business.

We met this lovely married couple down in the grocery store below the apartment building where we all stayed. A month later, we finally had the courage to come out and let them know that in fact we were a couple. They said, 'We knew when we saw you shopping.'"

He also talks about being bullied to come out and what it felt like to finally marry his longtime partner.

"It wasn't so much about being uncomfortable being gay, it was about being uncomfortable … Like the bully on the playground was pushing your face in the dirt saying, 'Say it, say it, say it.

"[Getting married], I felt transformed … We'd been together 26 years when we were legally allowed to get married in California. We went and did it, and we both agree it had a power, an importance to us in our lives that we can't really put into words, but that is totally palpable and intrinsic to who we are."

Very inspiring. Congrats on having such a long and happy relationship!

    Boring…
now when all come with similar stories…It´s significant only for them.
But who are these people anyway?

  2. 2

He is referring to people like you when he talks about the bully on the playground wanting people to come out. Learn from that fatass!

  3. 3

GASP!!! HE'S GAY??? WHO WOULD EVER HAVE THUNK IT? UMMM NO SHIT.

  4. 4

I think you have a photo of Eric Idle

  5. 5

Don't you just love rich, happy people?

    I don't.

  6. 6

I'm sure it was really tough living in the same building but in different apartments. AT least you didn't have to worry if you brought a trick home.

    Still not feeling it.

  7. 7

    Wow. He looks like shit.

  8. 8

    makes me puke

Mario, did you have the self-awareness to recognize you in his comment?:

"…Like the bully on the playground was pushing your face in the dirt saying, 'Say it, say it, say it."

Only because I think it's important for you to hear… When David Hyde Pierce talks about feeing bullied to admit he was gay, he is talking about people like you in particular.

Yes, DHP was obviously indicating tabloids and other badly-intentioned papers, but he was also talking about your past inclination for force-outing people.

I love the positive turn you've taken, but please own up to being a jerk in the past when it's relevant to a story.

Re: Average Jane – We are all forced to learn from our (often painfully embarrassing) mistakes in life. It's always really uncomfortable, but it makes us all better/stronger people. Hopefully this is a moment of learning for Perez.

  12. 12

Yo do realise perez when he talks about being bulled to come out, he means people like you? Your one of the biggest bullies out there.

  13. 13

That made me smile. He is a fabulous actor, and deserves to be happy like everyone else does! I know more long-term gay couples than I do straight, why do they not deserve to be married like us hetero people?

Of course not! He is dumb and shallow. Perez will always be a bully.

    haggard, aged badly

  16. 16

WTF … he's gay … wow this is news indeed … I think he completely fooled everyone … wow

    Gimme a break!

  17. 17

Good Gawd….against gay marriages….Sodom and Gomorrah

  18. 18

That bully in the playground, shoving dirt in people's mouths, yelling "say it, say it, say it," is you, Perez.

  19. 19

*sigh* again… where is the celebrity gossip?

  20. 20

I'm happy for them & now need to ask an embarassing question: Since your article said Brian is the husband I assume David is the wife but for a long time I've wondered how do gay couples decide who fits which role? I don't mean to be stupid but would LOVE to know more about this, thx!

Newsflash, Mario: NOT ALL GAYS ARE IN FAVOR OF GAY MARRIAGE. Take Elton John and David Furnish, and Torchwood/Doctor Who actor John Barrowman and his partner, for example. Both of them are perfectly happy with civil unions; in fact, Barrowman once asked why he should use a term for his relationship with his partner from those who hate them.

David Hyde Pierce and his partner seem to be happy, and I won't begrudge them that, but Mario, if you and your other gay pals keep shoving gay marriage down everyone else's throats, then you're just going to piss a lot of people off.

Re: Dannette – Since both Brian and David are men, they are both husbands. Not that I've talked to either of them, but I'm sure — like any other married couple — Brian and David have discussed their shares of household duties together. I'm not sure I understand your question.
