Twilight Producers' New Movie Will Disturb You

twilight producers to remake disturbing french horror film martyrs

For those of you who haven't seen Pascal Laugier's French horror film Martyrs, don't see it under any circumstances unless you're not partial to sleeping at night.

For those of you who HAVE seen the film, you know there's no way that the American remake will come close to it…but even despite that, it will still be very disturbing.

Twilight producers have teamed up with The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm to introduce this upsetting horror film to America.

The film tells the story of Lucie and Anna, two orphans who develop a strong bond with each other, until one of them seeks revenge on a family who may or may not have abused her as a child. We won't even tell you what happens from there, because it's too damn disturbing!

Here's what director Daniel Stamm had to say about the movie:

"Martyrs is very nihilistic. The American approach [that I'm looking at] would go through all that darkness but then give a glimmer of hope. You don't have to shoot yourself when it's over."

Stamm also dismissed rumors that Kristen Stewart would star in the remake.

Hmm…could have been inneresting to see K-Stew take on this role. Then again, her involvement might encourage kids to find a way to see this movie, and if it's anything like the original, they definitely should NOT.

Do U think U could handle the Martyrs remake? How about the highly disturbing original?

all i can ask is why?
    why, oh why, OH WHY?
first 'let the right one in' and now this?
martyrs was a brilliant horror. for those who have seen it you'll understand how 'european' it is in its styling.
why remake it with american goggles?
it'll just ruin the entire premise of the film.

    SIGH.

That movie was beyond disgusting. Honestly no one, aside from hardcore torture porn fans, would choose to sit through this.

What made "Martyrs" disturbing more than the violence was that it was believable. You could believe something like this could happen in the wilds of Europe. Changing the local right away ruins it. Then adding a "glimmer of hope"… that is NOT what the story is about! What friggin glimmer of hope is there in this horrible tale?? If I thought they'd listen I'd beg on bended knee for them to leave this film alone. It won't work even if you're faithful… American audiences by and large won't understand it. The story twist in the middle alone will lose them all and people will walk out.

You had me until The Last Exorcism. God, what a poor excuse for a movie. I will watch Martyrs in its original format and will have nothing to do with a remake now that those chuckleheads are behind it.

I am SO SICk of Hollywood remakes. Like euphemia said about 'Let the Right One In', then 'The girl with the Dragon Tattoo' (which Noomi Rapace totally rocks), and now this one? Please! When will Hollywood finally get their own material so we don't have to watch a botched job based on the perfect original? This movie isn't for people who are just sick porn fiends. Is it violent? Yes. If you are offended, don't watch it. However, there is a premise/theory in the movie for which these punishments must be given in order to find what the antagonists need answered. I'm not saying it's right, but it's a movie that makes you think about intent and what the truth really is. Americans (which is what I am) need to get some culture in their lives; go outside their neat little box and watch something with a little thing called subtitles. Lastly, if Hollywood tried to remake 'The Human Caterpillar', then don't bother, it was lame even before you got your hands on it. It was ridiculous.

Why can't we leave good movies alone? 'Let The Right One In' the trailers made that movie out to be this awesome horror movie, when its not at all. It's a drama that was amazing the way it was, before the American-ized it. 'Martyrs' should also be left alone. Honestly, its disturbing, gruesome, and brilliant. French film makers know what's up, and its totally going to be ruined ESPECIALLY if Summit gets ahold of it.

    So disappointed to here this.

  7. 7

Hahaha that was the sickest movie I think I have EVER seen.

But no worries with an American version..

They'll butcher it into a million tiny little pieces that it won't be a reflection of the original movie at all..Therefore NOT ruining a disturbing yet very interesting piece of European cinema.

Masochists & Sadists..This is your movie.

Martyrs was pretty intriguing. A little hard to watch but I appreciated that it was different from anything I had seen. That movie peaked my interest in these twisted type flicks. I would love to see how this remake will measure up.

  9. 9

NOOOO DON'T TOUCH MARTYRS! The original is perfect like this. I'm afraid the remake will be produce for being love by never-enough-blood 15 years old people.

WHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! I LOVED this movie when I just happened to stumble upon it one day. It is an incredible French film, why can't Hollywood just leave it alone!? We eff up foreign films. This film should be off limits, period! I hope people are smart enough to see the original first and then not go to the box office so it bombs ok. Im done.

  11. 11

im tired of all these demented movies blood guts and remakes of more blood guts and nothing decent to watch anymore serial killers in every movie and no story line they just kill all art and talent these days …horror thriller thriller comedy and scifi comedly scifi thriller is ok but too much sick things going on in peoples minds nothing cute of interesting anymore

  12. 12

I'm french, and didn't even understand how they could allow it to be shown on screen. I agree to say that, if there was any interest for the movie over the pond, a remake would cut out all that made it special. But what I say is: It was gross, uninteressing, too long, and the end came as a flop. Nothing held together, the first part revenge and orphenage, the second being the house and it's inhabitants, the third part, well, those who have watched it know what I mean… I found it terribly bad. But if by any chance it had to be submitted to the american audience, please leave the original version!!

  13. 13

I can't believe he even says oh well the American approach is to give a glimmer of hope. UGH. Just because you're remaking a foreign film doesn't mean it has to ALWAYS have a happy ending even if the original doesn't! Do they realize that the majority of people that would be excited about a movie like this DON'T want a happy ending? The best reviewed American horror movies usually do not have an upbeat ending, and they can in fact make money too.

  14. 14

The movie sounds good. I will see deffently see it but I should watch the original first.

  15. 15

It wasn't long ago when they first made the movie so why make it again (money).
I hate remakes when it's really new movies. Can't they thing of something on their own or are they making remakes of all movies?
They are making a remake of "the girl with the dragon tattoo", which I don't understand at all (money). And they are putting the new Lisbeth as the original as Noomi wasn't even playing her at first. The original movie and cast may be forgotten.
I hate remakes when the movies are really new. I understand if the movies are like 20 year or something but not this.

  16. 16

Could you please start spelling words correctly. You are so dumbed down it is ridiculous.

  17. 17

I've been a huge horror fan for years and the orignal French version really disturbed me. I would never watch it again. I'm sure the American remake will have to be toned down for an "R" rating.

  18. 18

    Re: K-StewFan

If you rent it, make sure it's the unrated version.

  19. 19

I didn't find the movie disturbing at all. It was more interesting, and the ending lame more than anything.
I dunno why they want to remake it Americanized though. If they stay true to the original, meh ok, but Americanizing films always leads to lame backstory extra BS.

Firstly, haven't seen the movie - just some trailers and teasers…….do you ever find out what she whispers to mademoiselle? the trailers/teasers don't look anywhere near the gruesomeness of hostel…….for those who have seen, is it worse than hostel? I don't mind some blood and guns but hostel was way over the top. i'm interested in the movie but not if it's as bad as hostel…….esp. the whole eyeball part….yuk…….

Re: April 20th – SPOILER, DON T READ IF YOU DON T WANT TO KNOW THE END.

No you don't. Mademoiselle shots herself before telling the others.

  22. 22

OMG this is the most disgusting GOOD movie ive ever seen!!
    i even bought a copy!!!
seriously it was HARDCORE , i had never seen anything like that!!!!

Re: April 20th – OMG it is WAY WAY BEYOND THE HOSTEL!!!!!

  24. 24

The original was made in 2008 and America is already going to ruin it with a remake? Hey Hollywood, GET YOUR OWN MATERIAL! BE ORIGINAL! WRITE A FUCKING SCRIPT YOUR-FUCKING-SELF!

  25. 25

And now a bunch of hipster douche bags are gonna see the original, and turn it into the next cool thing. Oh well. Thanks Perezhilton.com!

  26. 26

Why do they have to remake perfectly good movies? American's can't read subtitles?

  27. 27

Re: xFaust – I did see a utube video that said it was the last scene but you never know with those things………seems to be a shitty ending, no?

  28. 28

Re: bbanne9 – @ 23 - yeah but people are saying it's not that gruesome……..just a bunch of blood from what I read. I don't mind the shotgun scene or some bloody bodies. some of the things in hostel were nauseating (the eyeball scene was the worst and really all I can remember other than 45 mins of soft porn)……..i guess it depends on what one can personally stomach!

why does America have to shit all over great european movies??? first 'girl with a dragon tatoo', now this! we don´t need a puritan version of martyrs, which is one of the best horror movies i´ve ever seen, with a very interesting story line that is actually much deeper than a typical horror movie and goes way beyond the american cliches. this movie is out of hollywood´s league. please leave european movies alone and stick to cheesy romantic comedies and explosions!

    Re: BadGirlBetsy – exactly!

  32. 32

I hope she would not be in the movie, I love horror flick. If it's I hope she die at the start xD

  33. 33

Re: BadGirlBetsy – for someone who clearly considers herself to be a movie expert (and who is pretentious about it at that!), how come you don't know that the last movie to which you're attempting to refer is actually called "the human centipede"? "the human caterpillar" sounds like something on nickelodeon… like some weird spinoff of "catdog" from the 90's. get a clue before you start running your mouth, dude.

  34. 34

Any time an American remake of any movie, specifically horror films is created it sucks in comparison… I saw the original by renting it by mistake one night about 1 year back and it was crazy, scary and insanely perfect in what it was meant to be… I know this one will only ruin the original as we tend to do with this constant remake this remake that, colaborate your crap with mine so people thingk it's new… Crap!

  35. 35

Re: April 20th – Everyone keeps saying shitty ending but in my oppinion it put eerything into perspective… Why what was being done was happenning at all… What the reason was and who was behind it all together… Shows how people with money are able to do things we can't fathom… The dissappointment was it pulls you in so deeplty that it's almost like you are having an epiphany and are goig to learn something then what happens happens and you're like, WHAT!!! TELL ME NOW MAN!!! NOOOOOOO!!! But in a fun way it leaves things in a way for the AUDIENCE/YOU to consider things… I loved this film… Loads of shocking scenes and confusion but in a good way… Keeps you guessing…

  36. 36

    i wanna see lol

  37. 37

Re: Darknight17 – appreciate the mature response! (they are few and far between ’round here). i haven't seen it but can understand where you are coming from. after reading the post, I'm still not sure if i want to see it or not!! i don't do gruesome well……..although i'm an avid horror movie freak since like age 3……..("scaryness" and gruesomeness are totally different imo)

  38. 38

Way to spoil the ending. A spoiler alert would have been nice for those of us who've never seen the original.

  39. 39

oh, I've seen it the original!! just saw it today actually. very disturbing but remarkable at the same time, for some reason. there's no way the U.S. version will even come close to it..

  40. 40

I loved the original, and its message of hope seeded in utter pain, and just like I wont be seeing that bullshit remake of Let the right one in" I wont be seeing this remake either. What would Martyrs be with out the skinning alive scene??

Re: daisychains – I don't claim to be a know it all, however, I do have a very healthy respect for foreign films across the board. I watch an average of two to three a week. I am not a paid movie critic, however, I am entitled to my opinion of how Hollywood repeatedly takes movies that have been captured perfectly and manipulates them into something that becomes a joke. Thank you for catching my mistake, as I own up to it. I am woman (definitely not a "dude") enough to know and admit I make mistakes. Maybe it's you who's put themselves on that pedestal.

  42. 42

I love it! The French really know how to make good disturbing movies!
