Barnes & Noble Becoming Part Toy Store?!

We understand that this is a reality of changing times and a bad economy, but still - it seems like such a shame!

Barnes & Noble is attempting to adapt to the decline in print book sales by incorporating 3,000-sqaure-foot play areas for children, which will feature educational toys and games.

Although the addition is only being tested in specific stores for now, it will be implented across the country if it receives enough positive feedback.

However, don't expect a regular toys store, as CEO William Lynch explains:

"We're not trying to create Toys R Us."

Instead, the stores will feature Lego products, as well as trailer sets by Automoblox, and the "Me to You" line of plush dolls, to name a few!

What happened to the days when kids were excited to read? They're missing out on so much!

Sigh.

What do U think?? Is this a smart move for Barnes & Noble??

Great. now we will have to contend with hundreds of screaming brats in order to buy a book. No thanks, I'll stick with Amazon.com.

No! Coffee shops are not a place for kids. They're a place to get away from your children.

  3. 3

They have already done this with the Barnes and Nobles I go to.

  4. 4

As long as they keep those little fuckers separated from the rest of us, I'm good.

They have had play areas in most Barnes and Nobles for years…go back to the children's section and look at the Thomas train tables, lego sets, etc. They do a good job at separating that section–way across the store from the coffee shop. I like that my kids can play while I can browse nearby! And my children love going to the bookstore and are always excited to read a book too–it's not just the train table. That is just a nice little addition. And they don't have junky toys, more like a few classics next to all the children's books.

I'm with DayistheOne - I always loved going into B&N b/c it was an adult refuge. If there are little kiddies everywhere now, I'm done.

I like the idea myself, especially if B&N can get some toy exclusive to them which catches on huge and brings parents and others into the store by the busload. Books make great holiday gifts as well, and e-readers would be great for the techies among the rugrats.

why would anyone pay their high prices. they should go out of business

  10. 10

Just make sure the toys dont make electronic noise. I think its cool.

  11. 11

    Err….

  12. 12

I've seen the toys and they are educational & pretty cool. They are VERY close to the adult fiction section, however. People bring up a good point about the noise.

I frequently find fantastic children's toys and gifts at Borders. I don't see why B&N would want to do the same.

Put in a quiet childcare area so that adults with children can shop for books for themselves AND their children. That would help business more than a play area. Stay at home parents want places to go for a little peace to pursue their own interests for a few minutes, not a playland that will disturb other people. And BTW, you all were 'little f-ers' at one point while your mother and/or father were trying to raise you, so shame on you for disgracing your own parents like that, unless you had nannies raising you, you ungrateful little punks.

great, how soon until libraries are like this too?
anyway doesnt matter since they charge so much, theyll be out of business soon or online only

Re: Jennifer Bensen Eckelberry – i wasnt a little f-er as you call them, my parents DID raise me right and didn't let me trample every where like a wild animal

    Great idea!

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ISN'T THERE A SAFE HAVEN WITHOUT KIDS ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Parents, keep your spawns to yourselves!! keep them away from us non-breeders please, thanks!

    Re: poorlittlerichiegirl
Unfortunately, parents now a days for some reason can't raise their kids with manners. that's why a lot of us non-breeders don't want B&N to become a playpen.
