Was Jersey Shore Idea Stolen?!?!?

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooTV NewsMTVLegal MattersReality TV

writer says jersey shore idea was stolen from him by mtv

Let's hope this isn't true, MTV! This would NOT be cool!

Writer/producer Christopher Gambale is claiming that MTV stole his idea for Jersey Shore, and he may file a lawsuit against the network.

Gambale says he had submitted a treatment to MTV called Guido: A Reality Series, which he registered with the Writer's Guild of America in 2006.

His treatment included some key Jersey Shore words, such as "guido," "guidette," "nightclubbing," and "Guido fist pump."

The subject from the treatment was described as gym-toned and tanned. BUT did he have heavily-gelled hair?!?!?

Looks like Gambale's attorney sent MTV execs a letter, and they plan on filing a lawsuit one month from Nov 10 if they don't hear a response from the network by then.

One thing Gambale doesn't claim credit for is Snooki.

Here's what he had to say about her:

"Nobody can create that."

We're glad to hear you're not taking credit for Snook, Christopher!

As for the origin of the show's concept, we'll be curious to hear how MTV responds to your complaint.

Do U think MTV stole Gambale's idea?

Since when does a television program about dumb-ass douchebags and brainless butterballs drinking themselves into oblivion qualify as an … "idea" ?

  2. 2

Yeah, Snooki is something else, for sure. LOL.

  3. 3

That's a no-brainer. If it's on paper and he registered it and showed it to MTV, then yes, they stole it. Because if they didn't steal the idea and hired him, that's a whooooooooole lot of money they'd shell out for his royalties. So in MTV fashion, they took the greedy way out threw him aside.

    Burp…………..snooozzeeee………………….done……………..

LOL OH OK he invented the words guido, guidette, fist pumping, etc. OOOOK stop trying to jump the mtv cash cow loser.

Oh alright… So this will be filed Dec 10, 2010… if Mtv does not respond. My sole question is… why did it take Gambale almost 3 years to decide to sue MTV. If it were my idea, I'd of been PISSED back in 2008/early 2009 when MTV announced casting of the "Italian American Guidos for a Reality Show called Jersey Shore." I certainly would not have waited until basically 2011 to file suit. That is the way I see it.

Umm no… key words MAY FILE

  8. 8

I don't even think that Snooki's parents want to take credit for her.

ASK BEYAAWNCE AND WILL.I.AM. THEY SWAGGER JACK SHIT ALL THE TIME AND GET SUED ALL THE TIME. IMMA SURE MTV COULD USE THEM AS CONSULTANTS DURING THE COURT TRIAL.

The sad thing is that if Gambale met formally with MTV to pitch his idea, he probably has no case. MTV makes you sign this thing that says something to the effect of "We get pitched a million ideas all the time. Just because you think your idea is new and different, we've probably already heard it before and may already be working on somthing very similar to your idea."

And usually cable networks want to seet FOOTAGE first–are your reality characters compelling? Believable? Outrageous enough? So I wonder if he had footage or if it was just an "idea" for a show he was pitching around.

However, if he never met with MTV formally, he may just have a case.

Question, though: Can one register a "reality show idea" as a script with the WGA? Perhaps he registered a work of fiction, like a real script, not a written treatment for a reality show. If that's the case, I wonder how much of a fictional work can be comsidered stolen if it is 'realized" instead.

Last question: Does registering an idea or treatment with the WGA constitute copyright protection? I would think only a finished, fully-executed idea coupld be copywrite-protected.

hah love jersey shore, and that comment was hilarious

  12. 12

The idea for Jersey Shore came from an episode o True Life, way back when. "I'm a Jersey Shore girl" and "I have a summer share". Case closed.

  13. 13

i like snookie. but why does she claim to be an "italian guidette" when i read she comes from chile and was adopted. she just looks italian with dark hair and fake tan. i like snooki bc she not afraid to start shit with people

  14. 14

who cares? It was a stupid idea… trashy shit I tell you!

  15. 15

Just get this ugly orange trolls OFF THE AIR! I've never witnessed such ignorant stupid people. I'd be embarrassed as hell if I lived in Jersey, what a effed up representation! They're all ugly muts

  16. 16

Ugh, I hate that stupid show…it seems all you need to do to be a celebrity is to be a total douchebag or a filthy whore! Where's the talent in all of this?

  17. 17

honestly.. wayyy before MTV had the jersey shore.. they did some tru life episodes following people at their shore houses etc…. So clearly it was something they already had been involved with.. 3 years later he wants some cash.. yea ok dude.

  18. 18

Screw MTV. They underpay their slaves/employees, routinely steal ideas and show concepts from everyone to produce brainless dreck that the Morons eat up.
    MTV=MORON TELEVISION

Jersey Shore sucks, but if the guy can grab a few pennies from these greedy pri*cks, why not?

My grandma created a show called The News. All the networks stole it and I'm getting paid nothing.

  19. 19

wtf? anyone with a below 0 IQ can come up with a stupid idea like jersey shore, so I dont think it's stolen or anything!

  20. 20

Not sure but, if he has documents they will probably pay him something to go away. Then again people are always trying to drag down someone/something or even take credit for that someone/something that has achieved enormous success.

  21. 21

the show has been on for like 2 or 3 seasons (idk cuz i dont watch it) and they're just NOW filing a lawsuit. pssh.
