Quincy Jones VS Kanye West: Meow!

| Filed under: Music MinuteKanye West

Quincy Jones about to join the ranks of countless entertainers on Kanye West's shit list.

In a recent interview, Quincy was asked to comment on Kanye in relation to himself. Specifically, the reporter tried to make the two sound as equals, as both of them consider themselves performers and producers. However, the reporter didn't even get halfway through the question, before Quincy stopped them and corrected the. He said:

"How man? No way. Did he write for a symphony orchestra? Does he write for a jazz orchestra? Come on, man. He’s just a rapper. There’s no comparison. I’m not putting him down or making a judgement or anything, but we come from two different sides of the planet. I spent 28 years learning my first skill. I don’t rap. It’s not the same thing. A producer has to have some sort of skills that enable him to be a producer. It’s totally different to know what to do with 16 woodwinds you know from piccolos down to bass clarinet. It’s a whole different mindset. No comparison. None."

Yeah…Kanye's not going to like this. True, Quincy makes it known that he simply asserts that they've just got different musical backgrounds, but we don't happen to think 'Ye will see it that way.

Or maybe he'll surprise it and just let it be. Quincy is an icon, after all. Wouldn't want to piss off one of the greats!

I don't even know why they dragged Kanye into this. I hope he won't respond. Why would stupid reporter compare them? Idiot

  2. 2

    he's right, mario.

  3. 3

Jones is right. He is a real musician he plays real instruments a conducts real music. Hes soooo right Rap Hip-hop what ever isn't real music and never will be. I mis the soul music of the 60's and 70's I wish I was alive at a time when music was good.

Quincy is completely right Perez. If Kanye has any smarts he will read everything he said before just blowing smoke. Composing/producing (like Jones) is a craft that takes years of work. I'm not discrediting Kanyes work, but CLEARLY it is no where near the same thing. I would have interrupted the reporter too, they are not the same at all.

Quincy is right on this one.

Team Quincy forever! I've had a massive crush on him since the late 70's. Love this guy. Handsome, talented, smart, great taste, NOTHING to not love!

  7. 7

    kanye's a mega douche.

  8. 8

Quincy's daughter Rashida has more talent than Kanye.

  9. 9

Quincy's an ass. He talked shit about Michael Jackson too after he died, so I lost mad respect for him after that. Who is he to disrespect the King of Pop? And who cares if Quincy is an icon? That doesn't make what he does any more important than what Kanye is doing. Quincy has a tendency to toot his own horn, but a real legend would let his credentials speak for itself. Quincy is forever putting someone else down to pump his self up.Fail!

kanye wouldn't be mad, this guy probably didn't mean disrespect. he's just saying how can you compare this young rapper to a guy like me lol they are different. stop trying to make drama

Its about damned time somebody puts that asshole Kanye in his place…..how the hell could anyone put Kanye up against an icon like Quincy???? I would like hear what Kayne 'the mouth' west has to say after reading that! HA!

  12. 12

Quincy Jones is COMPLETELY right. As to how they even got compared, that alone is a travesty and shows you how dismally tone-deaf people have gotten.

FYI for people that don't do their own research:

Kanye West first rose to fame as a PRODUCER for Roc-A-Fella Records, where he eventually achieved recognition for his work on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint, as well as hit singles for musical artists including Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and Janet Jackson.

His style of production originally used pitched-up vocal samples from soul songs incorporated with HIS OWN drums and instruments.

Silly reporter. Quincy won a (trumpet) music scholarship in 1951! to the Berklee College of Music, but soon pursued a more hands on route. He wrote charts through the 50's for Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dinah Washington, Cannonball Adderley and his old friend Ray Charles. In 1956, Quincy Jones was performing as a trumpeter and music director with the Dizzy Gillespie band. This isn't just name dropping. The list just goes on and on and on, for 60 years. You could TRY to compare Kanye - in about 50 more years.

  17. 17

    Well said Q.

Uhm, I don't agree with Quincy. Kayne is a prodigious talent and a genius producer. Frankly, I think that he is least accomplsihed as a rapper. So what if Quincy took 28 years to learn his craft? That speaks volumes for Kayne's natural ability and excellent ear. There is the same old issue of schooling compared with talent. You can have all the education in your particular field but if you lack talent it isn't all that useful. Talent trumps if you ask me. Quincy has both. Kayne has oodles of talent and a fearless and adventurous spirit. I am not a big fan of Kayne. I think that he may even be over-hyped. But his talent as a producer is unquestionable.

Yeah Quincy. Not feeling that statement. Smacks of elitism. No disrespect, but whatever you think of Kayne, he is now and tomorrow.

Lacey 1 is right; Quincy was quick to make some unkind remarks about Michael Jackson after his death, even though the Jones-produced "Thriller" and "Off the Wall" enriched Quincy immensely. I don't dispute that his comments seemed true, only that they came too soon.

Quincy was foolish to call out M.J. on the race issue, as Quincy is predisposed to falling in love with white women. At least Kanye's been known to actually date a few sisters.

But that's not the issue of this thread. There's no disputing that Quincy is a true musician who has done movie soundtracks ("In Cold Blood"), TV theme songs ("Sanford and Son") and orchestral work. Props for his remarkable, profound career. He broke barriers and prevailed at a time when Jewish Hollywood was resistant to giving a"schvartze" proper respect. But I'm still annoyed that he trashed Michael so soon after he died.

There is no comparison whatsoever. I can't think of any young producer or artist today even coming close to the body of work Quincy has created and produced. The AMA's just highlighted most of the garbage that is being produced today-just Autotuned hyped up rap crap.

  21. 21

Quincy is right. How could a question like this even make sense in your head? The interviewer sounds dumber than Sarah Palin.

Kanye is to Quincy as Milli Vanilli is to Led Zeppelin.

  23. 23

Quincy forgot to mention that he is human, while Kanye is a steaming pile of shit.
