Which Side Are You On, Cindy McCain?

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Politik

We've always been proud of Cindy McCain's efforts to help foster equality for all as a political wife. She's been heavily involved in many equality groups and even recently starred in an anit-bullying PSA for the NOH8 campaign.

That's why we were super confused when we read this tweet from Cindy, saying:

"I fully support the NOH8 campaign and all it stands for and am proud to be a part of it. But I stand by my husband's stance on DADT."

What?! How come you?! That's such a contradiction, especially considering the speech she made in the PSA! Seriously, she specifically says:

"Our political and religious leaders tell LGBT youth that they have no future … They can't serve our country openly … Our government treats the LGBT community like second-class citizens, why shouldn't [the bullies]?"

So what's the deal? You can't have it both way, Mrs. McCain. You can't stand behind your husbands crusade to keep the DADT policy afloat while also promoting equality for gay youth.

Which is going to be, Cindy?!

How come you? What does that mean?

this is my take on it: she's all for marriage equality and ending dadt however, she supports her husband's right to his opinion. freedom of speech and all that jazz whether you like what they say or not (no matter how bloody wrong he is)

To me her message is that it is ok to be gay as long as you stay in the closet. She is trying to straddle the fence - and in doing so she is making herself look like a hypocrite.

Does anyone realize the can of worms being opened with the STUPID anti bullying? Kids will get properly or improperly labeled a bully and the lawyers will laugh all the way to the bank. This is life, not fantasyland, we are sending the wrong message.

A serious contradiction. Who got to her and what did they threaten her with?

I support equality for the gays. But I dont think it's our business to say what the military should do (I was a military wife, he is now out). I myself, am a Republican, but I don't see the harm in allowing people who serve our country, to feel comfortable with who they are without fearing for their future in the military. I know quite a few people personally, that are in fact gay and they are serving. The military can probably tell too, because they are female but they don't look it. It's totally cool with me.

If someone is going to die for their country, they shouldn't have to lie and fear for their jobs. They are serving us and deserve respect too.
But that's not up to civilians.
I'm not too sure why Cindy would support the gay community, but not this. Everyone has different views though, just because she supports one thing, doesn't mean she has to support EVERYTHING that comes with it.

Personally, if they were to allow this, they should really work on separate rooms and showers for each solider. Mixing gay and straight people are no different than mixing men and women in showers and rooms. That's all.

They pay taxes, even in the military. They should be allowed to be open, not parading it around (because straight or gay, sex shouldn't be talked about in ANY work force, not just the military).

I don't see the contradiction in her statement. I disagree a lot with my wife in a number of things but I will always support and stand by her even if her views are different from mine.

Perez, she supports her husband. So yes, she CAN have it both ways. Fundamentally she supports LGBT in an unfettered fashion, but when you are married, you have to compromise. Get it ?

Slow news day? Or are you just behind? This was a while ago…

really? they did a bit on the daily show about this on the 15th. google "daily show it gets worse psa"

Re: mustbenargles – i agree with what you said :)

NO RATIONAL PERSON WOULD SUPPORT ALLOWING OPEN HOMOSEXUALS TO SERVE. HOMOSEXUALS ARE SO OBSESSED WITH THEIR OWN PERVERSION THAT THEY DISRUPT EVERY ENVIRONMENT THEY ENTER WITH THEIR SICKNESS. THE ARMY IS FOR FIGHTING AND KILLING, NOT HAVING GAY ORGIES. HOMOSEXUALS ALSO CAUSE AND CARRY DISEASES LIKE AIDS AND ANAL WARTS THAT ARE DEADLY AND DISGUSTING. JUST IMAGINE HAVING TO LIVE IN A BARRACK WHERE YOU HAVE TO KEEP YOU MOST INTIMATE POSSESSIONS AND WHERE YOU HAVE TO CHANGE CLOTHES AND POOP. IT WOULD BE A HORRIBLE REALITY. THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO START A DATABASE OF KNOWN GAYS SO THAT THESE PEOPLE CAN BE EXCLUDED FROM THE MILITARY REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE TELL OR NOT

Cindy is effed up. In the video she says with sincerity in her eyes that political leaders are telling LGBT youth that they can't serve their country and have no future. WTF Cindy? You were talking about yourself! You are a horrible person for saying that in an ad about GAY SUICIDE AND BULLYING. Shame on you.

Cindy might mean that she has her view, AND she stands by her husband's right to have his. She's really attractive, and moreso now that she's finding her voice.
Guess what changes for everyone else when you give LGBT full rights? Not a darn thing. It just makes LGBT lives better. Straight youth need help, too.

Pressuring people publicly to conform to your view isn't really OK, either.
Cindy is doing what she can, and it's more than many.

See I can understand why she is having an issue being consistent. If your partner is in a high ranking government position it can be expected that their family would be totally cohesive and supportive over any and all politically backed issues. Even if the family members don't agree with all the stances that are taken showing a disagreement in the family makes the politician look untrustworthy.

On a separate issue…I have wondered why there has only been an anti-bullying campaign for gay, lesbian and transgenders. I mean I can understand how it could be perceived that they would be the easiest target but bullying as a WHOLE is a totally ignored issue. My sister was straight and was bullied so violently that she ended up killing herself, I too was bullied with just as much vigor. I think that now that the homophobic bullying has been addressed everyone else who has suffered in the same way should be addressed.

    18. 18

Personal take, and I know it isn't worth much, but I do think that these two issues can be, and are, separate. I was vehemently one sided on this issue once, as well, that DADT was a terribly bigoted thing, until I heard it explained from the point of an enlisted man whom I know to be gay and not 'telling' some very interesting and compelling reasons why it may be for the best. There is SO much hate and violence in the world already, and in the military even more-so, I can understand both sides of the argument quite well…..

    19. 19

I can see how you think its a contradiction but its not! First of all for people who have not been in the military or come from a military family you can surmise all you want what the military's like, how it should or should not be, but there will always be some kind of disconnect. the military has one objective to train people for war in the event we should go. when we start making a persons sexuality a focul point in the military EVERYONE looses. gay and lesbians can serve. as it should be. but it turns my stomache when i see someone "decide" ( after they've given a commitment to serve in the military ) leave because they're standing for equal rights. its cowardly and self-serving. i FULLY suppport DADT. Don't ask Don't tell. Its no one's business. The only thing you need to know is the person who is serving beside you has character and will have your back. PERIOD.

you have become so jaded in the world of celebrity gossip that you fail to realize that there are marriages out there that work. While, you or many others may not agree with her position to support her husband, people who are married support their spouses all the time even if they don't agree with the position. It's called cooperation Mario. You aren't in a relationship so you wouldn't know what it means to support someone else.

    21. 21

I think she may have bigger plans. this is already a pretty risque move against her husband. I trust she's not done touching on this. Equality!
