This is so tragic.

Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter Mario Monicelli died yesterday by jumping to his death from his hospital window.

The 95 year old was reportedly being treated for a terminal prostate tumor.

Just awful to see a man who made so many laugh with his films pass in such a devastating way.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones. R.I.P.

Even more trAgic is that he had no option on how to end his life other than this! Where's the magic pill people?

Sometimes all of our technology doesn't help. We just suffer for too long. I hope he felt peaceful with his decision.

  3. 3

I understand people that are miserable cover it up with humor………prime example apparently……

  4. 4

He wanted a quick end to his suffering. You really can't blame him although it's a sad way to end it all. Poor guy. Old age is a cruel joke.

Isn't this what everyone wants? Instead of a humane assisted suicide. I would like to go out with some dignity not forced to jump off a building.

Very sad…Wish taylor swift would try this

  7. 7

I can understand how a terminal illness can be devastating, but a 95 year old committing suicide? After living such a long life some of us could only hope to live, it's kind of sad he would end it so drastically.

My mother suffered horribly as she died of cancer at age 64. Trust me when I tell you that the disease killing him would have been much more tragic and devestating. RIP, sir.

He chose to end it quickly rather than linger in pain. He took control. Too bad there isn't assisted suicide for cases like this.

This may sound horrible- but maybe he couldn't endure the pain anymore- I have heard that is a long and painful way to die. Maybe he was trying to spare his family from taking care of him while he was in such horrible pain, and losing all his dignity in the process. RIP Mario, at least you are not in pain anymore.

    oops, sorry I posted twice!

  13. 13

To choose your own end could be the greatest freedom there is - It's sad they couldn't just put him to sleep, and he had to jump.

  14. 14

Its painful and heartbreaking to watch. I'm sure he didnt want his family to watch it happen. Too bad it had to be jumping from a window

  15. 15

    Re: PalinsGaySon – you're a prick.

  16. 16

Was overdosing on sleeping pills not an option, that he had to leave a big mess of human remains for other people to clean up?

  17. 17

Mario Monicelli "What? No more SEX?" Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh SPLAT

  18. 18

If humans could end their lives legally and humanely (like we're able to do for our PETS), this never would have happened. Ridiculous in this day and age we're forced to suffer until the very end. Life is painful enough, we should be given the option of ending our lives in peace, with respect and our DIGNITY intact. Now his family will have to scrape him off the pavement and bury him in a closed casket. Sad.

  19. 19

That is sad, but honestly, its what he wanted, and he deserved to die with dignity, and the way he wanted. WHY would you want to SUFFER a long, and painful death from cancer? He was 95 years old. He knew it was time to check out.

  20. 20

You are so moved that you cannot take five seconds to list a few of his films? What a tribute you are paying this guy!!

  21. 21

We should all have the right to die with dignity. If the tea party had their way we'd all be suffering until the last breath!

  22. 22

    Pace all'anima sua.

  23. 23

it is sad he had to do this…i really dont get why people can't just have a bit of help to die when they are already dying and in a lot of pain.

i have seen my grandmother pass from cancer, it was painful and long…was very difficult to watch and listen to…she wanted to die sooner and without so much pain. its really awful that we are not given the freedom to choose this option when we are too weak to do it for ourselves.

  24. 24

Did U know that his father committed suicide as well???? He didn't have a funeral but he was cremated…so it's obvious he didn't belive in God and died in the he wanted. We are different, we make different choices and live differently but everyone should be free at least to decide how to die!! Why should we be offended or even judge?

    Re: April 20th
"miserable"? "cover it up with humor"? wtf are you talking about? do you have any idea who this man was? evidently you don't or you wouldn't have made such a useless and ignorant comment.
Mario Monicelli was a strong, bright, well educated and coherent man, who just didn't accept to let someone else decide how his life would end. it wasn't fear, it was pride.

  26. 26

i imagine him happy. i mean he lived 95 years and he's an accomplished filmmaker. maybe he died laughing.

  27. 27

To be honest I'd do the same. I saw family members suffer until their last breath while I held their hand. There should be a way to end your life when you want to without having to jump from a hospital window. RIP xx
