Jack White Vs. Ebay Users

jack white lashes out against ebay flippers

Jack White is NOT happy with eBay users who are putting up copies of limited-edition vinyl releases from his label, Third Man Records.

As his way of saying F-U to these eBayers, White has started to sell the records on eBay himself to the highest bidder.

Here's what he had to say about it on a fan message board:

"We sell a Wanda Jackson split record for 10 bucks, the eBay flipper turns around and sells it for $300. If $300 is what it’s worth, then why doesn’t Third Man Records sell it for $300? If we sell them for more, the artist gets more, the flipper gets nothing. We’re not in the business of making flippers a living. We’re in the business of giving fans what they want.”

More from White:

"Don't be spoiled, don't insult people who are trying to give you what you want … Seriously stop all of the whining, because what you communicate to us is that all of the trouble we go to isn't worth it because nothing we do will make you happy."

The man certainly has a point, but then again, if EVERYBODY who ever released a record had the same mindset as Jack White, then eBay would be the source of more drama than a High School cafeteria!

If we were to uncharacteristically make a team-based analogy, whose side would U be on? Team Jack White or Team Ebay Users?

apparently Jack doesn't understand the concept of a free economy. supply and demand establish worth. if you issue something in limited edition in a free economy, you cannot dictate who purchases it or why they purchase it. if someone buys it knowing it is of worth to others for a higher price, you have no cause for complaint and are, basically, an asshole. And he's also correct that if people ARE willing to pay $300 for it, and that's what he wants to get, he should raise the price accordingly.

team ebay on this one. this is nothing new. if he released the same thing for the 10 bucks he originally sold it for to take the wind out from under their wings then sure, he'd be the hero. but he's no better than the flipper now.

    team who gives a fuck

  4. 4

Team Jack White. If that's what he wants to do, let him. Maybe he'll be selling music for an outlandish price and people will stop bidding… he has the right to do that. The flippers are like ticket scalpers, and that's stupid, too.

Never trust Ebay on certain items…

  6. 6

This is touchy.. If you were to go to your job and you were promised say… 10.00$ an hour, you showed up, pulled 10 hours you would expect your $ right? So let's say you showed up pulled a 24 hour shift, and then found out that a guy who didn't even work at all got 3000$ for the work that you had been doing. Wouldn't you be pissed too? Actually, fuck Jack White. Steal his music.

eBay is a network. The internet is a network. It's not so much about commerce as it is about pathways. Who is getting the information to you? eBay. Team eBay users on this one. Just reading your little write-up makes me want to find out who Wanda Jackson is. Maybe I'll fall in love with her. Maybe I'll pay $300 for one of her albums on eBay, suckers!

Actually I agree with him. If he has the time to list these records himself (or have someone do it for him) then why shouldn't he make the big money instead of someone else?

  9. 9

The issue is with the record company, not the free market system. Misdirected insults and anger.

    one word: MOOBZ

He's looking at it through the eyes of a fan. There's nothing that sucks as much as when you try to get a hold of a limited edition item and they're all sold out. Then you find it on eBay for like 5 times as much as the original price. He just doesn't want his fans to overpay some asshole to get a hold of a copy.

    Team.Jack. Every.Time. He's SO sexy!

  13. 13

ITS ABOUT TIME somebody stood up against ebay! That place is EVIL!

  14. 14

If they just want to give fans what they want, why cry about how they get it? It shouldn't matter that they're getting it through sources other than official routes. He just sounds like a whiny baby because he's not getting 95% of the profits of private sales. He should be proud someone actually wants to pay $300 for his shitty music anyways. He needs to stop being greedy. Doesn't he already have enough money? For some people, selling things online is the only way they can make any money in this shiteous economy.

Re: SF90 – No, he wants to be the one making all the money on his limited edition crap. He's jealous of the flipper for taking money out of his own pocket. I dare him to raise his prices. $10 is all it was worth originally and the idiot who paid $300 for it was a sucker.

  16. 16

    shut ebay down? lol
if the items wouldnt sell, no one would use ebay and it would shut down
i guess we should shut down classified ads and garage sales too? how about we just go communist?

  17. 17

this is for sure one of the most overratted artists of our time

  18. 18

Overrated I think NOT! If you listen to Jack White's portfolio, you would be amazed! White Stripes, Raconteurs, The Dead Weather! He got Loretta Lynn's latest grammy. He's fricking AMAZINGLY TALENTED and not glorified enough!!!
