Mamma Mia! Venice Is Under Water!

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True

Unbelievable! The city of Venice, Italy is currently under water!

High tides reached record levels- 1.36 meters above seal level - flooding more than half of the Italian city, including St. Mark's Square!

Temporary footbridges were put down for pedestrians to walk through, but those didn't seem to help as some people resorted to wearing scuba masks!

Crazy!! We hope no one gets injured!

My parents were just here in September. Apparently this is a daily thing that happens. Later on they were sitting in the same square enjoying cocktails.

  6. 6

    rather predictable, I would say!

  7. 7

How can city that's already underwater flood?

  8. 8

Happens every year around November. Dumb tourists haven't a clue.

  9. 9

Those planks are up half the year.

Two years ago the flooding was so bad the walkways were taken down because they were floating away.

in venice we go underwater 180 days every year.
    it's not a winter thing!

  11. 11

This does happen every winter. The main news story here is that it is the worst flooding for 22 years. This fact is omitted from the post though.

I have seen a few documentaries on this. Just scary monsters! Worse, funding to permanently fix this is a staggering achievement . The history alone there. So sad..

  16. 16

It's called Acqua alta Perez. Do a little research!

  17. 17

I live here… every year is the same sh*t!

  18. 18

This happens all the time there and they always have the walkways on standby. Nothing new.

  19. 19

as every1 has stated perez .. this happens every single year .. and it is a good thing .. venice has a polution problem.. the flooding is very nessasary ..to wash it out .. remember , that venice is actually a tiny island ? read a freaking travel brochure once .. or read anything once ..anything at all ??? a documentry maybe ? the flooding in venice gets exponetially worse every year .. as the polar ice caps are melting..?? where have you been in the last 10yrs ?? global warming melts the casps causing .. nasty world wide storms throwing off the tropical air and water currents .. and freak storms hurricans , tornados tsunammis all over the worls. then will beging .. global cooling and frezzing .. we are headed for a tiny mini ice age .. 10-15 degress cooler

Perché non hanno appena congelare l'acqua, e poi tutti potevano utilizzare ghiaccio pattini andare in giro?
(Why don't they just freeze the water, and then everyone could use ice skates to get around?)

  26. 26

they are used to that, it happens all the time I remember when I visited venice it happened, it's disgusting to see people who don't use the footbridges, the place is full of bird shit

  27. 27

And don't forget that all the buildings drain their sewage into the canals so that iss what the people walk in
