So Much For Ocean's Fourteen! Steven Soderbergh Retiring

steven soderbergh to retire from filmmaking

But, where will we go for understated comedic performances by Matt Damon and George Clooney???

After his upcoming thriller Contagion and a couple of other projects, director Steven Soderbergh plans to retire.

Here's what Matt Damon had to say about his frequent collaborator's decision to leave the filmmaking game:

"He's retiring, he's been talking about it for years and it's getting closer.

He wants to paint and he says he’s still young enough to have another career. He’s kind of exhausted with everything that interested him in terms of form. He’s not interested in telling stories. Cinema interested him in terms of form and that’s it. He says, 'If I see another over-the-shoulder shot, I’m going to blow my brains out.'

After this movie we’re doing Liberace next summer with Michael Douglas, and then he might do one more movie after that with George [Clooney], and then after that he’s retiring."

An unexpected career move, but it's def important to follow your passion.

And who knows? Maybe after five or ten years of painting, Steven will return to us to make another mainstream film with Sasha Grey.

Lots of luck, bb!

This story is a few days old. Not sure why people in the entertainment industry say that they are going to retire. He might take some extended time off, but I am sure he will make more movies at some point in his life, unless he dies young.

He's lucky that he has the 'luxury' to consider retiring at such an early age. As a personal aside, I met Soderberg once at an IFP event in L.A. a number of years ago and he was actually quite a pretenious jerk. I've been a fan of his films for years but also wonder how he got his first big gig as an editor all of those years ago now and also how he also was handed the opportunity to move into directing feature films so quickly.. Definitely connections and/or nepotism at play here, like always. Sorry, the truth is the truth.

Yeah, he's announcing his retirement, but first he's gonna do this movie then that movie then there's that other one in a couple years…..Just a way to drum up interest in his movies….
