No Pardon For The Billy The Kid

A decision that only took 130 years to make!

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has decided not to pardon the infamous Wild West outlaw, Billy the Kid, who killed nine people between the years of 1878 and 1881.

Reports say that 130 years ago, territorial governor Lew Wallace promised Billy a pardon in exchange for a testimony about the killings he witnessed.

Wallace did not meet the end of his bargain and Billy was shot dead in 1881 by Sherriff Patrick Garrett after killing two deputies and escaping jail. He had been sentenced to hang.

Governor Richardson has said in the past that he was interested in the story and tried to pardon Billy to fulfill the promise of clemency. However, he decided against it due to insufficient details.

He continued:

"I felt I could not rewrite history.

I have decided not to pardon Billy the Kid because of a lack of conclusiveness, and also the historical ambiguity as to why governor Wallace reneged on his pardon."

What do U think? Should Billy the Kid have been pardoned?

    I couldn't give a fuck.

But If he shot you mario, I'd pardon him.

Re: LisaRose – Oh no…read your comment and think about the word "shore."

No way! Just coz he's been dead a long time and has a mythology about him, stories, movies and the like, it doesn't make him any less a killer. Which he was! There's no pardoning that. You serve your time, and if you die beforehand, well, them's the breaks.

    This is fucking stupid.

I think….who gives a fuck?! It's been 130 years. He's fucking dead. Oh well. Whether he got the pardon or not, he's gonna rise from his grave and talk to people about. Fucking waste of time. Shouldn't we be worrying about fixing the economy or some shit like that?

Billy the Kid's story is about frontier politics. Yes, he was a killer but there's more to it than that…

John Tunstall, his employer, was like a father to Billy. He was brutally murdered by the Sherriff and posse - fact. The wealthy land baron wanted to his land and had lawmen in his pocket. The Wild West. The new Governor of NM needed Billy's testimony and promised a pardon. Billy testified and afterwards got locked up. The Governor reneged and Billy shot his way out of a hanging killing innocent lawmen…

you know, there is nothing like using tax payers money to look back on the past and waste time with useless and pointless minutiae

Don't really think this is a waste of time, hey people are still talking about him 130 years later. Wonder if that will be true for our current celebrities? I find history to be very fascinating. Not sure about the pardon, don't know the facts. He did kill 9 people…..

I think Bill Richardson is a joke. He was the worst Gov. NM ever had. He loves Hollywood and his name in the papers………this was all his ploy. He began his term with a 42 million surplus and ended his term with a 50 million deficit. He is king of the pet projects……..the billy the kid thing was another waste of NM money. Thank the Lord we now have Susana Martinez as Gov.

@LisaRose - coming from the person who can't spell 'sure' correctly? :-/

Isnt there better things to focus your time an energy on, then pardon someone long time dead….give me a break

  20. 20

I don't see why it matters anymore.. the dudes dead and that was 130 years ago…

  21. 21

um … i'm pretty sure LisaRose was attempting to [textually] pronounce the word "sure" like billy the kid (or anyone else from that era) would have, which would have come out sounding more like "SHORE" than "SURE" … but it was amusing to see how many of you "educated" people responded that she was mis-pronouncing the word "sure" … ah, you made my day ……. :0)

Re: LisaRose – hahahaha he 'shore' did!!

maybe do a grammar check before commenting on the education of others!

Whether it was 150 years ago, or last week 9 people were murdered by the infamous Billy the Kid. That is the trouble when long dead outlaws become 'legends' in mythology with the passage of time. It tends to reduce the death of innocent people.
