yeh, thats fine. Respect where respect is due.

  2. 2

Shame about the horrible plastic face!

  3. 3

Wait a cotton pickin second… who the hell were the people that were polled? Lists like these are bullshit and only serve to boost the egos of the undeserving. Eminem is cool but in no way shape or form is he the BEST hip hop artist in the past 25 years… and Madonna is highly questionable as well. The people polled were not the masses, but a selected segment of the population who must not be that familiar with all the artists listed in the poll.

Best selling, yeah I'll give her that. BEST?? HELL NO! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She doesn't even have a good dinging voice !

  5. 5

That MEANS nothing. She is a fur-wearing piece of poo as a human being. She hoists her crap (so-called music) onto a paying public while not letting her own kids be exposed to her sh$t. No respect for her at all and I would not buy her garbage if Jesus himself was selling it.

  6. 6

Those polls are a freaking joke.
    Check out the nominees!

Green day best live act? x'D

ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Yes, so Madonna has sold alot but can she sing worth a shit? Nope. Tokio Hotel(sp?) is a joke to the entire music industry. The fact that they were even considered on this list is shocking. American Idiot is probably Green Day's worst album ever. School of Rock beat out Almost Famous? Who the hell was polled on this, a group of 14 year olds? Yikes……

  8. 8

I havent ever even seen SPIN Magazine. Who is Tokio Hotel anyways? I looked at thep oll. Michael Jackson and anything of his isnt even listed. Its all Green Day. I dont know who voted on this stuff, but I'd like to know what theyre smokin

  9. 9

Actually in terms of growth and evolution of their sound and vocal abilities I would put Madonna close to the top too. Not only has she sold a shit load but she was able to change her sound and image with praise from the critics too. And she may not be the best singer in the world but she is able to use what she has and she puts emotion into it. Which we can't say for every other pop artist out there without a 5+ octave.

  10. 10

I think that the voting public is composed of idiots totally lacking any artistic sensibilities, if this is the result.

I suspect what these results actually demonstrate is that the people who voted don't know anything of consequence about music in the past 25 years, and simply picked the names of the only people they could think of. Either that, or the voting ballot provided a short-list of pre-selected options.

I dislike being mean to anyone, but art deserves to be treated as something of real value and consequence in our culture. Therefore, to claim that Madonna resides at the apex of that art form out of every other possible choice over the past 25 years is simply ludicrous. Like every other person I've ever talked to about it, I now and always have considered her to be so lacking in actual talent that it is inexplicable that she does have a career. Her success is acknowledged by all I've ever heard from to be based entirely on her initial prostitution work in the industry, followed by her continued willingness to sink to slutty media tricks. I know that sounds harsh, and normally I wouldn't care in the slightest what she did or didn't do (it's her life); but I DO care about how our culture values the arts.

  11. 11

the age range of the votee's is highly questionable….did they just randomly pick some kids from pre-school??

  12. 12

    Re: wwefan01

You've never heard of Spin Magazine? For real? Wow I guess some people do live under rocks

  13. 13

this list is bullshit… Green Day and madonna fans rigged it….LOL@madonna as a sex goddess. She is about as sexy as a piece of shit lying on the sidewalk when its 90 degrees. she is fucking unsexy as they come.

  14. 14

Don't worry guys its just a pity vote for Madonna since shes going to lose the Crown soon.
Eminem is top in hip-hip for the second time now, so well deserved.

  15. 15

    Re: magicmike

Just because your prefer the Joker smiling Janet doesn't mean Madonna isn't/wasn't sexy

whats going on with her face? Fuckinghell!!

  18. 18

In a separate poll, Granny Donna was voted solo artist most resembling Jocelyn Wildenstein, the Cat Lady.

  19. 19

Well, apparently the people who read Spin are fucking idiots.

  20. 20

    Re: LeonDancer

You think a wannabe, copycat, unoriginal artist like gags is going to be the Queen of Pop? Bwahahaaaa. When she is able to doing something novel I will maybe give her a little credit but I don't see that happening anytime soon

  21. 21

  22. 22

Most polls like these have a pre-supplied pool of nominees to choose from. If people were asked for their favorite artists of the year, decade, etc… and only given a black line to enter to write in their vote the results would be much different.

That being said I love that the Beastie Boys were above people like Jay-Z and Kanye West

  23. 23

    Re: magicmike

Well, Madonna was kind of hot when she was young and this was a best of the last 25 years poll so…

Besides, she's still better looking than Gaga

  24. 24

I just cannot get over how her face is beginning to look like Jocelyn Wildenstein's. Good grief, Madonna….enough with the plastics! Your'e on the wrong side of 50. Embrace it.

  25. 25

Anybody who thinks Madge doesn't have talent is crazy. She has helped produce some of the most amazing records of the past twenty-five years. She is an actual artist, unlike others whom I won't name right now.

  26. 26

She looks like she has marshmallows in her cheeks.

  27. 27

Green Day? Don't think so. Green Day is lite music to feed the mindless masses. Nirvana's Nevermind laid the path of which Green Day wobbles down. Green Day, that has to be a joke. Smells like Teen Spirit defined a generation and American whatever was turned into some sad excuse of a Broadway play.

  28. 28

    Re: MadonnaLouiseVeronicaCiccone
Single-handedly shaped and changed our culture and way of life? In whose world? Yours and everyone else who lives in some sort of gay bubble? I would say that's why this culture and way of life has been dumbed down for the past 25 years, but that still would be giving her too much credit.

  29. 29

OMG stop the plastic surgery already! it doesnt even look like her anymore.. She is starting to look like Jocelyn Wildenstein "The Cat Lady" EEWW….

  30. 30

She looks hiiiiiiigh as shit in this picture

  31. 31

thats our reigning queen of the universe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! madonna is always and will be number 1 for many years to come

  32. 32

Do I agree with the masses? 750,000 readers (less than that when you count in the number of individual persons who voted multiple times) voting on a pre-selected panel of artists is NOT a statement from the masses.

  33. 33

shes the queennnnnnnn !!! of course shes the best mind in pop music she created all .all the rest is blah blah compared to M and imagine if M was younger this new artists would have no chance

  34. GG78 says – reply to this

Bad plastic surgery !!!!!!!!!!! She's starting to look like The Cat Lady, Jocelyn Wildenstein. Ugggghhhhh, nasty !

  35. 35

    Moon Face

  36. 36

    Re: GG78

Jesus how many accounts do you have? You're pretty sad

  37. 37

Re: BAEEAB – Look how the Madonna fans defend that old hag from the greatness that is Lady GaGa

  38. 38

    Re: LeonDancer

Greatness? You mean the cheap carbon copy? LOL Grow up kiddo

  39. 39

cat lady ftw hahahahahaha she's too ugly

  40. 40

Well deserved. ALL of Madonna's hits are SOLO hits — that is, she's credited alongside NO ONE else. Today's "artists" do have hits, like the ugly Rihanna, but they are NOT solo hits. Everyone collaborates with everyone nowadays.

  41. 41

    Re: LeonDancer
That's how Madonna fan(atic)s are. It's not so much that they think she's the greatest thing in music ever, but they expect every one else to think so as well, and they get pissed when people revere other (more talented) artists. So they start pulling out their asses statistics, like "she's the best-selling album female artist ever" or "she has the biggest selling tour for an single artist," like that's going to make you a convert. Well, McDonalds hamburgers are the best selling hamburgers, but everyone knows you can find a better, higher quality burger.
The thing is, most of these fans conveniently ignore or piss on pop culture history. They need to do some research beyond 1984. Look at artists like Billie Holiday, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett and/or the Runaways, Heart, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, Carole King, Donna Summer, Cher, Tina Turner, Teena Marie (RIP), Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, Pat Benatar, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, etc. Those are the REAL trailblazers. 99% of what Madonna has done has been done before and done better.

  42. 42

    Re: Baron87
Oh, and I forgot Deborah Harry, who Madonna pretty much modeled herself after.

  43. 43

    Re: Baron87

No buddy and please don't speak for me. And you think that I think Madonna has done everything? Are you slow? I am just jumping on his balls because he thinks Lady gags has more talent.. who in fact is the biggest joke when it comes to pop music.

And really burgers for an analogy? really? LOL

  44. 44

OK, Madonna may not be the most greatest or most talented artist, but she's worked hard with what she has, made some brilliant albums along the way and she's a great entertainer. Not to mention paved way for many female artists today. I say well deserved. I mean, who else has topped her in the past 25 years?

    *cricket sounds*

Exactly. No debate. If we're talking Best Solo Act of The Past 50 years, that'd be a lot different.

  45. 45

Re: Baron87 – Thank you so so much

  46. 46

WTF kind of God Damn list is that??????…..seriously?…THOSE artists/bands for THE LAST 25 YEARS….WTF?????
Is the creator of this article 18 years old or what?

  47. 47

  48. 48

Re: Baron87 – @41 - I like the burger analogy & think it is very apropos. Just as a music afficionado would sooner listen to many of the artists in your list, sentient gastronomes who choose to eat burgers would make that place their last choice irrespective of the billions served (albums sold). If Mad Donna's supporters take exception to her being compared to a hamburger franchise, then I would suggest that she is the approximate equivalent of The Price Is Right in television programming, i.e. been around a long time, familiar, mildly entertaining, successful.

  49. 49

    Re: Eyes Crying Purple Tears

Exactly. Madonna is on the top of her game and has been for the past 25+ years. She has set the bar countless times and has evolved as a musician over the years. She never played it safe, took risks, went against conventional beliefs, etc. And anything thats just 'mildly entertaining' wouldn't last in this industry for this long.. people try to undermine her artistic integrity because they think all she does is tongue and cheek.. Whereas if you pay close attention she does nothing for face value like majority of the pop stars today

  50. 50

    Re: BAEEAB
Who said I was speaking for you? I was making a general analysis of most of the Madonna fans I encounter. And since you couldn't come up with a proper or intelligent retort, I stand by what I say. Sorry if the burger analysis went beyond your scope of reasoning. Perhaps you should read "The McDonaldization of Society," and then you just MIGHT get it.

  51. 51

    Re: Eyes Crying Purple Tears
"I mean, who else has topped her in the past 25 years? "
Dennis Rodman and Vanilla Ice come to mind of people who topped her.

  52. 52

Re: GG78 – THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE VOICE. BUT HER VOICE IS BTTER NOW.actually well better. but its about all thing. and madonna is the best performing and doing her theatrical.the best videos all

  53. mvp says – reply to this

madonna is the queen of pop

    long live the queen

  54. 54

The thing about Madonna is whether you love or hate her, she always seems to bring out strong reactions from people. I tend to be bipolar with her. A lot of her stuff I like, a lot of it I don't. Sometimes she's brilliant, sometimes overrated. She may not have "changed our way of life," but she has changed the way people perceive female artists, for better or worse.
She's the first female artist to fully embrace the video age. She's also the first female artist whose persona totally eclipsed anything done musically. Face it, she put out some catchy singles, but she's put out some stinkers too, but there was one time when anything with her name on it was a hit. She also was able to turn some rather generic songs into classics by making videos better than the songs. She was never better vocally than her peers, but she made herself stand out and be more interesting. She also made everything more visual, from concerts to videos, when before, none of that mattered. But whether she was creating controversy or re-inventing herself, it all seemed so contrived and eventually predictable.
As a dance music lover, I always thought she was overrated in that genre. There has always been much more better dance music out there over the last 25 years, whereas her "poppy" songs needed a good DJ remix to make them more danceable.

  55. 55

But whatever she's done, she always executed it so flawlessly. She's always done everything right, too. No major drug or alcohol addictions, no breakdowns, and every torrid affair she's had has been forgiven, whereas anyone else would have been vilified for it. And if she has had some major breakdown, you'd never know about it, because she's the most fiercely guarded personality out there. Her handlers are the best at damage control and myth creation/busting out there.

  56. 56

    Re: BAEEAB
"She never played it safe, took risks, went against conventional beliefs, etc."
That can be applied much more accurately to a lot of artists who better deserve better those accolades. I don't see what makes her so special, especially when her glorified bubblegum music was about as safe they come.

  57. 57

    Re: Baron87

Nope it didnt bud it was just a poor analogy.

  58. 58

    Re: BAEEAB
    Right, because YOU say so.

  59. 59

my hometown nominated for best rock city :-D
oh and clearly madonna, tokio hotel and green day fans ATTACKED this poll

  60. 60

    best album? American Idiot? *blink*

  61. 61

Re: penny1206 – who on earth was voting?

  62. 62

    Re: Baron87

No you're using you personal opinions within your analogy. Sorry kiddo just because you associate her with that doesn't mean the rest of the world is going to agree with you. ANd when you leave comments like that expect me to come after you

  63. 63

even if you dont like Madonna ppl have to agree no artist has changed and evolved so much in the last 3 decades, she has even changed her voice in such a dramatic way! (lately for the worse sadly) but she is what an artist is suppoes to be, evolution and creation (not perfection)

  64. 64

    Re: BAEEAB
The point of the analogy was to show that best-selling doesn't always equal BEST. I could have used any type of product, and it would have been appropriate, and I'm pretty sure more people would agree with me than YOU think they wouldn't. And since you hardly gave an effective counterattack other than some lame "poor analogy, bud" statement, I don't think I'll be too worried about you "coming after me." You're not much of a challenge, and you're not as clever as you seem to think you are.

  65. 65

    Re: Baron87

Oh believe me bud I got what you were trying to do. However, like I said I will let the praise from the critics and fans speak for itself. Thus me referring to your analogy as poor.

  66. 66

    Re: BAEEAB
"Thus me referring to your analogy as poor."
    Much like your reply. :)

  67. 67

    Re: Baron87
I think people will naturally say she's the best in what she does just for the fact that she's done so much and has been such a cultural icon, they feel they have to say she's the best, kind of the same way people do when they put Elvis, The Beatles, or Michael Jackson on a pedestal, even if they really don't listen to either or neither one of them. She's got to that level. Best is always subjective and there's always going to be people who think someone else deserves that title of Best more than she does, even if they don't necessarily hate her.
That said, the poll sucked (and I'm not saying that b/c she won). It just seemed so haphazard they way they picked the nominees (Beyonce with Springstreen, Madge, Beck and Eminem???).

  68. 68

Re: YoungTaurus – I agree with you, it's what I also feel, she may not be the best singer, dancer, or whatever, but she has influenced so much in our culture that wether you like her or not she is now part of us

  69. @v@ says – reply to this

Re: Phibes – She was certainly marketed like fast food. Remember her dressed as Marilyn? Constant force fed rotation airplay of helium voiced 3:30 pop songs that confounded and left the Eighties Big Hair rockers holding their ears to go underground, joining the 70's mavens and new indies.

  70. 70

Re: @v@ – Yes, old pal, I remember. And out of the chaos and bewilderment, there emerged something called grunge with its apparent disdain of what had gone before. Speaking of which, by reading your comments over time, I am of the belief that you are near to the epicentre of grunge music - I'll go out on a limb and say Bellingham. How'd I do?

  71. 71

Re: MadonnaLouiseVeronicaCiccone – "SINGLE HANDEDLY SHAPED OUR CULTURE AND WAY OF LIFE" this made me laugh hard, so thanks for that. Oh and this part "EVEN THE MORONS WHO DISLIKE OR LACK APPRECIATION OF HER - SHE STILL GETS THESE IDIOTS TALKING ABOUT HER" made me snicker as well because you comment on news about Gaga… who you really dislike. So basically, you just called yourself a moron and an idiot. A fitting description me thinks!
