    It's one school board - a Catholic school board!! - most schools in Canada go for GSA's because we're very equal. And last time I checked we have legalized gay marriage which the states are still behind on for the most part. Maybe it should have read "Dear Clearly Biased Group of People Not Funded By The Canadian Taxpayers…"

Considering that Canada has legalized Same-Sex Marriages while your country still discriminates against it you should be more Pro-Canada. A School Board doesn't reflect the whole Canadian Population, now does it? That's like saying the whole cast of Jersey Shore reflects the whole American Population.

    Clearly, it is not your intention to judge an entire country for the shortcomings of the catholic church. How would you feel if I judged your entire country for the behavior of the KKK, Rush Limbaugh or Sarah Palin. Canada is an extremely liberal and forward thinking country that is at the forefront of marriage equality. Rather than blaming us for the antiquated and hate-based catholic church, applaud us for the fact that we believe that everyone deserves equal rights.

Do you even know how large the Halton School Board is in comparison to ALL of Canada?! It's an extremely small district and I'm pretty sure in the USA all Catholic and Christian schools do not encourage gay-straight alliances IN school. It has nothing to do with the school.     It's not Canada's fault. Catholic schools are private schools organized under a private catholic school board, not by any government. They're allowed to do what they want. I'm gay and Canadian and I don't like it either, but hey, that's the catholic church for you. They have a right to believe what they want just as I have a right to believe what I want. Most Canadians are pretty open-minded and accepting of others but unfortunately that facts seems lost on the church. Which is odd considering the majority of Canadians are catholic (either practicing or non-practicing.)

    Just because this school district is in Canada, does not mean that Canadians support the CATHOLIC's school board decision to ban this alliance.     I am proud that my college has a gay alliance and support group at my school! and we just recently in december did a 24 hours of silence fundraisor in support of gay rights to show people how hard it is to be silent about who you truly are.     Their Catholic School Boards reserve their right to determine their own choice of programs. They are, after all, a designated Catholic School Board. Canada has allowed gay marriage and gay rights for years. I think you need to take this one up with the Catholics, since I think you are one. E-mail the Vatican a pink protest note. The Catholic Boards there follow Vatican policy as the school area Bishops are consulted on area school policies.

    I have to admit, I am not surprised by any comment generalizing all of Canada. We have the second largest landmass in the world, but somehow people assume we are not only the same, but everyone has the same beliefs. Canada is not a melting pot, we are a mosaic of individuals and we respect other people's values, cultures, and beliefs. How long does it take to google Canada? Just like the U.S, our east coasts and west coasts differentiate from one another, and we don't all play hockey or live in igloos.
    How is it that our school boards teach us WORLD history, and somehow in American schools, Canada is not generally taught?

    As a former student of the HCDSB, I would just like to point out that many students and teachers do not feel the same way that the board does. HOWEVER, we are a CATHOLIC school board, and according to the teachings of the Catholic Church, the rule does make sense. While it may not be the right thing to do, it is also not fair to point fingers at Canada as a whole - our laws are a lot different than the laws in the USA. Equality is something that needs to be worked towards - but dealing with something like this requires a better understanding from the Church, not the school-board. We were never taught anti-gay messages in our classes, and I know many gay people who went to my school and were accepted by everyone.

That was a huge issue during the last provincial election - the conservatives wanted to give all private schools public funding as it is not fair that the Catholic schools receive it and don't have to follow provincial morals or standards

    First of all I'd like to say that I am 100% for gay rights, and I honestly think that religion is bullshit, and anyone who uses religion as an excuse to deny gays their rights, is a jerk-off.
    However, while saying that… it is a CATHOLIC school. The last time I checked, the Catholic Church does not support the gay lifestyle. I'm not at all supporting the decision, its disgusting, I'm just saying that we shouldn't be surprised.

    Dear Perez, this one insignificant school board is not representative of Canada as a whole. Stop generalizing us. As someone who want equal rights for the LGBT community you should be able to understand how detrimental a generalization can be. It's like saying, "All Gays are perverts." It's wrong and you know it.

    This one (1) school board is just a bad example of extremist thinking. I went to a Catholic School when I was younger, go to a Catholic church and am Canadian. I can be the first to tell you that this is just bad judgment on those associated with this particular school board.

    I'm pretty sure Same Sex Marriages are legal in Ontario (CANADA) and Toronto (CANADA) has one of the largest Pride festivals in the world. If anything, we embrace the LGBT community.

    If you want an example of homophobia/hatred/ignorance, you should look in your own backyard. America leads the world in right-winged idealism and ignorance. You can be beaten half to death for being Gay…. Oh, wait… that's a generalization… (Not so nice, is it?)

    Do your homework, Perez…

    I am so sick of this double standard between Canada and the US. Why is it that when American's reference someone's hometown, it's "Toronto, Canada" or "Vancouver, Canada"? We have provinces you know? Similar to how you have states? Apparently we're expected to acknowledge all 50 of them while America would rather not even bother with 13. This post just proves how ignorant Americans can be towards Canada. I'm beyond offended.

    None of us have the right to impose our beliefs upon anyone, the Catholic church included. If you don't like the stance that the Catholic church takes on homosexuality then don't go to a Catholic school. Unlike the US, our public school system is fantastic so it's not really necessary to send your children to a private institution in order for them to receive a good education. The simple fact that there is a very distinct separation between Church and State in this country and it works both ways. They can't impart their beliefs into our legal system and our legal system can't impart it's beliefs on the Church. It really is that simple. I understand that it's archaic and prejudicial, but the institution of the Catholic Church has been rather firm on this for quite some time and nobody is forcing anyone, gay or straight, to participate in this particular organized religion. You can still get married (unlike the US), you can still be openly gay and serve in the Army. None of the aforementioned rights are even an issue with most Canadians, so please Perez, reserve your shame for your own country. We've got it under control.

    Wow, look at all the people pissed off at Perez's post "Dear Canada." He is right though to address it to all of Canada. Despite our legislation of same-gender marriages and the the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that supposedly helps GLBT Canada is still very homophobic in a lot of places. Violence against GLBT has increased, anti-gay bullying is very common in schools across the country, regardless of public, private, religious, etc. Canada didn't lift the ban on homosexuality in the military until 1992. To this day 65 per cent of Canada’s military members do not want to bathe or share quarters with gays, and 35 to 45 per cent opposed working with them (reported in a recent Globe and Mail editorial). So yes, "Dear Canada" there is still a LOT of things that need to change with regards to GLBT people, and having Catholic or religious schools imposing their beliefs on students is reflective of society since our taxpaying money goes toward them. So it affects us all, Catholic or not.

    This shouldn't be "Dear Canada" You group an ENTIRE NATION together when it was the decision of ONE school board? I think THAT sucks. Not to mention it's a Christian school…it's not exactly new news that they don't approve of being gay/bi/trans what-have-you. Not that it makes it right but you can't blame an entire nation for what a Religion thinks and is imposing on their students.

    I just love how she compares gay people to Nazis - it illustrates the morally bankrupt stance of her bosses. Apparently being gay is the same as being a mass murdering war criminal. If the Catholic church could get away with it, it'd still go on a killing rampage against all gay people, just like the Taliban and the Nazis THEIR POPE supported.

     The overly offended Canadians here need to remember that their tax money go to fund this organization. So Mario was pretty correct in saying "Dear Canada" and no ammount of snippy protests will change that fact. Canada and Canadians who do not take steps to stop funding such hateful organization as just as responsible for these actions as the organizations themselves. So, Dear Canada, it is indeed NOT COOL!
