This is great news considering Saturday's tragic events.
Dr. Peter Rhee of University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona says that U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords underwent surgery for a single gunshot wound to the head that passed through her brain.
18 people were shot at a public event held outside of a grocery store in Tucson on Saturday.
Giffords was among five patients that were listed in critical condition. Six people died from gunshot wounds, including Chief Judge John Roll of the U.S. District Court for Arizona and a 9-year-old girl.
The shooter has been identified as Jared Lee Loughner.
Dr. Rhee says he is "very optimistic" about Giffords' recovery, adding, "I'm about as optimistic as it can get in this situation," and that the next 24 hours will be critical in her recovery.
This is just such a terrible tragedy. Thank goodness there are some optimistic news.
The victims and their families are in our thoughts.
