Gwyneth Bombs At The Box Office

Yikes.

The box office weekend was not kind to Gwyneth Paltrow.

Her movie, Country Strong, was released nationwide and opened up in sixth place with $7.3 million.

The film only cost $12.5 million to make and was targeted mostly to the heartland states.

The western True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, came into the #1 spot with $15 million, while last week's Little Fockers moved to the number 2 spot with $13.8 million.

Black Swan continued to soar, coming in 5th place, bringing in additional $8.4 million, which has brought its box office total to an impressive $61.5 million.

That's too bad for Gwyneth. Seems like she really needed a hit on her hands.

What did U see this weekend?

Well I hate westerns & I hate country music too. It just reminds me of the redneck racist trash I know that listens to it. We saw Nic Cage's movie Season of the Witch. It was GOOD.

  2. 2

Not surprised. The trailer looked awful and it recieved bad reviews.

  3. 3

There are about 5 theatres within a 10 mile radius of my home. None of them had Country Strong playing in them this weekend. I really wanted to see it, but its just not released anywhere near me whereas everything else is. Perhaps that is why it did not do so well.

  4. 4

It was actually very very good. I just came back from seeing it and the theater was packed, it was a 1:20 showing! I loved it, and it is a great movie. FORGET about the HONKY TONK theres more to the stroy then country music. I LOVED IT & WILL BUY IT ON DVD.

  5. 5

Everyone hates poor Gwyn becasue she seems to think she is better than everyone else.

  6. 6

I don't think this reflects a true idea of how well it did. This movie did not open at all screens, everywhere. I live in the south and I had to travel 30 minutes to the next town to see it. The theater in my town was not showing it and it's a 10 screen theater. Despite what the critics say, every "real" person that I've encountered that has seen it, loved it! I, for one, would pay another $9 to see it again, and probably will do just that.

  7. 7

I could have predicted that without seeing the previews. Nobody cares to see her, especially singing. Didn't the Hewey Lewis movie teach them anything?

  8. 8

It made over 60% of it's money back in 1 weekend? I hardly call that a bomb. You are an idiot perez.

  9. 9

I watched this movie on Friday, it was really great. It got horrible reviews, but I still wanted to see it. It was only playing at one theater! Very unfortunate that it didn't do so well, needs better publicity.

  10. 10

You forgot one fact. This movie is only in 1424 theaters. Most other movies are in a minimum of 2500 theaters.

    11

seen it and it was great the singing in it was great……and overall i thought it was a GREAT movie!!!!

  12. 12

Obviously no one's interested in Gwyneth Paltrow's self indulgent and laughable attempt at being a country singer.

  13. 13

maybe because it circulates around modern country music…the most lamest music ever???

  14. 14

Is anyone surprised guys? Nobody really likes Gwyneth. She's just an extremely lucky entitlement hack who constantly amazes me on how she keeps getting roles. Add on to that the fact that shes a "singer" now?! Give me a break. I can't for the life of me figure out HOW the HELL some exec green-lit this crapfest of a movie.

  15. 15

I loved it. I'm neither a country nor gweneth fan, but I can say that this movie was a wonderful movie.

  16. 16

I'm not surprised. Who the hell cast this movie with a bunch of Hollywood A-Listers that have nothing to do with the country world? I hate country music but even I know how they could have made this film the lease bit successful: casting real, marketable country stars.

  17. 17

Ugh! Country western theme, shit-kicking music and the pale, wan and very average Gwyneth Paltrow…I pass on everyone of her movies but this is just the WORST!

  18. 18

This was a low budget movie of $15 million so $7.2 million for one week-end I would think is good. I bet True Grit and Little Fockers spent more than $15 million on the salaries alone of their major stars.

  19. 19

Re: vancity – "real marketable country stars"????? Hello - Tim McGraw was the one of the leading male roles… you don't get a more real marketable country star than that……

  20. 20

  21. 21

She's above making money through the capitalist system… so this flop should be taken as good news by Gwyneth.

  22. 22

have you looked at its per Theater Average ? its higher then most of the other movies playing !

  23. 23

well i saw this movie and even though i am not that big into country music i thought it was a very good movie. I think people should give it a chance even if country music isnt your thing. i give it a B.

  24. 24

I don't like Westerns. So, very surprised True Grit did well. But for Gwynnie, a stupid career move; I predicted that flick would fail when I first heard about it. She's hugely talented but this was not the right venue for her, IMO.

  25. 25

I don't (and I feel I'm not alone here) get the "sending much love and light" and the "love is louder" tweets you constantly send and then turn around and post crap like this. It's like you are glad the film was not #1 this weekend. What did Gwyneth ever do to you? Not tweet back?

Off topic I know but what's with the Israel bashing now that you are home? When you were there you were in love with the country and the yummy food and wonderful people. Now it's nothing but how repressed they are. All the things you mentioned in your lame video regarding your "insights" are common knowledge and have been for quite some time. These things should have not surprised you. Why didn't you study up on your vacation destination and therefore could have saved your dollars and spent them better in a place that met all of your criteria as far as gays, the transgendered and human rights are concerned?

  26. 26

I went to see Black Swan this weekend and it was a very creepy, confusing movie. It literally made you feel like you're going crazy. I didn't like it. Next time I'll stick to a comedy.

  27. 27

I'm sure the movie was actually good. The problem is that there is nothing country about Gwyneth. It would have been better if they had a actor with a country music background. To many try to cross over and it hardly ever works.

  28. 28

Of course it bomb. Gwen is not a country singer- she's an ACTRESS.
Country music folks take that serious.
And no one takes her seriously.
Her acting career is basically over. Not interested in seeing her in anything.

  29. 29

You'd have to be an idiot to call this a flop. For a low-budget movie focused on country music, I'd say it's doing pretty well. A real flop is like "Heaven's Gate", which never made back its almost $50 million budget, a lot of money in 1980! This movie will obviously make it's investment back for its investors along with a tidy profit. Coming in 6th place over the first weekend for a low-budget movie is not so bad. Considering the fact that country music is only popular in the less populated parts of the country, and internationally only popular in the UK, Ireland, Canada and Australia, I doubt the producers were ever thinking this would be a big money maker like Titanic or Avatar. It's a small movie and it's doing reasonably well, not a flop by any objective measure.

  30. 30

I just don't think she was the right lead for this movie. People strongly associate her with London, big cities, and kind of an elitist-cultured-snobby persona. She is not endearing, and playing a country star seemed like a big. All the publicity before the film was how she gained 20 POUNDS during filming. OH MY GOD!!! But don't worry, she goopy, detoxed it after. I mean, why would someone like that resonate in a country music film for country music or heartland fans?

  31. 31

Somebody needs to do their research. Country Strong expanded this weekend to just about half of those where Season of the Witch opened at. It did pretty well considering the number of screens playing it. It made $$$ per screen than other movies this week.

  32. @v@ says – reply to this

    32

If it's already made back half of cost, it'll make money. Somebody has to be 6th.
It's the long haul that matters.

  33. 33

I would hardly call the film a bomb. It had the second highest per screen average in regards to dollars grossed (behind The King's Speech) in the Top 10. As always, sensational headlines from rose tinted reporting. This site really has fallen off! You can't even be bothered to recycle news properly.

  34. 34

It's not playing near me yet. Maybe next week….

  35. 35

i love country music so much
i havent gotten the chance to see it yet
from what i heard it was good

but no one really sees comedies
its all 3d movies and comdies and action movies

  36. tasha says – reply to this

    36

The movie was in 1400 theaters as opposed to True Grit that was in 3100 theaters. So that wasn't really that bad.

  37. 37

No surprise here!Gwen didn't looked convincing as country music star and overall this movie was weak.

  38. 38

    Haha stupid hillbillies!

  39. 39

To be fair a lot of people in the south are kind of snowed in right now. Roads are iced and interstates are closed…our cars arn't equipped for this type of weather so we stay at home when snows and sleets…so not a lot of us can go out and watch a movie. Plus last time I went to a movie I pay 9 dollars for a ticket and 10 dollars for a large coke and a popcorn to share with a friend. I rather wait until it comes out on DVD…UNLESS Robert Pattinson or Johnny Depp starrs in the movie then I will see it in theaters.

Though I do have a lot of love for Tim Mcgraw in this movie. He seems like an awesome guy.

  40. 40

NO ONE WANTS TO SEE A COUNTRY MOVIE…. THAT WENT OUT WITH THE COWBOYS AND INDIAN FLICKS OF 70YRS AGO.. BESIDES, GWYNETH IS ANNOYING.

  41. 41

Ahhhh. Finally, a hint of the real Perez Hilton is back! Missed your cunning remarks, however so slightly they may be!!!!

  42. rory! says – reply to this

    42

Well I really want to see this, wouldn't say it's bombing, but if it is, definitely not because it's a bad film, looks reeeeeeeally good to me!

  43. 43

this movie did not open everywhere. because I went to the movies this week and I did not see it at all in the theater I went too. probably only went to areas where there is a strong audience of country music.

  44. 44

Not accurate. It went from #43 last week in limited release to all the way to #6 this week.

  45. 45

ddude what the fuck are you bitching about!! the movie appeared in select theatres couple of weeks before it went nation wide.. so basically if it cost 12 mil and they made 7 mil in opening.. the most likely made there money back. The movie was great and i am serious. I really hope someone gets a oscar nom.

  46. 46

Re: alltimeerin – glad you saw it!! i am also waitng for the dvd

  47. 47

I saw it - was enjoyable, but totally unrealistic. The premise relied on Gwenyth's character having a male sponsor - which is completely absurd (no AA/recovery program condones opposite-sex sponsors). Not bad, other than that.

  48. 48

gwyneth paltrow makes my ass pucker .. everytime I see her I want to punch her in the face.

and thats why I didn't see it.

    stuck up bitch.

  49. 49

Just went and saw it, there were only a few theatres in my area showing it… I thought it was amazing!! I don't think it was redneck or racist, I guess they didn't do a very good job with their advertising if people got that vibe from it. Another hit by Tim McGraw, Gwyneth was very convincing, and I now thanks to Garrett Hedlund I have a new Hollywood crush!! I suggest people go and see it, can't wait for it to come out on Blu-ray!

  50. 50

Total trash! Several people and I were going to see it, but the reviews were abysmal. We saw "Somewhere" instead. Fabulous. Gwyneth tanked on this one, as did the whole crew.

  51. 51

Hey Perez… they may say it Nationwide right now, but it's NOT.. I don't have the movie in my area also… That would have made a big difference in the numbers…. I can't wait to see it… I'm in a town with over 50,000 people and we do not have it here, so to me that's not Nationwide…..

  52. 52

Re: sparkys nemesis – Umm It's DEF not a western movie lol

  53. 53

Just because someone speaks proper English does NOT make them snobby….If you watched Glee.. I believe that is the true Gweneth… a fun chick that I would like to hang with!!

  54. 54

actually i completely disagree that this was a flop.. it's only playing in like 1 theatre in my province and people are driving over an hour just to come see it.. not to mention it was packed when i went. it's also a much better movie than what you see in the trailer, with a good cast and soundtrack. the numbers will increase much more once it's playing EVERYWHERE

  55. 55

Nobody cares about country themes with people like Tim Mcgraw that grew up racist. He has never come out with his liberal views, so nobody truly knows where he stands on some of these more progressive issues.

Hollywood should stay out of politics for this reason :)

GP makes me sick. I won't see it nor will I watch her on SNL. She's a snob who puts down americans. Go away GP!

  57. 57

YOU'RE AN IDIOT!!! $5106 PER SCREEN IS NOT A BOMB! IN FACT THAT IS MORE THAN THE TOP 6 DID PER SCREEN!!! CHECK YOUR FACTS!

GO SEE IT! i SAW IT A WEEK AGO AND AM GOING TO SEE IT AGAIN. IT WAS GREAT!

  58. 58

I plan to see it. Born and raised in Tenn. Still have lots of relatives in Nashville and other parts of Tenn. I like the new country pop the most.
But, living in the midwest for while I also like Pop, Rock and Roll and some Soul! Oh, don't let me forget the classical music. I kinda like it all. As long as it it good music.

  59. 59

And wasn't Blair Waldorf in it as well? Would that make it convincing as a country flick any more than city girl Gwyneth? Maybe it should have been Kelly Pickler and Kelly clarkson or why not Faith Hill in the Gwyneth part. Then the chemistry would have been there with Tim McG. JMO

  60. 60

saw Country Strong…watch a piece of sh..!!! I was so disappointed I was expecting it to be really good, previews were great, music was good, movie was awful!!!
    next time Gwen

  61. 61

i've really tried hard to like gwyneth but i find her just… naturally annoying. and it's not at all because she's trying so hard to seem perfect or pretty or something that she's not… it's just something you can't put your finger on but it's there. maybe it's her husband's dorky band, or her bible beating on that ridiculous goop site, or that each quote she makes is so blatantly a desperate attempt to stay in spotlight that makes you realize that wow underneath it all, she must have very low I.Q..

  62. 62

bomb? Did you even see the movie? I loved it. The cast worked great together. Solid movie.

  63. rsvp says – reply to this

    63

Budget figures reports are a dicey call. For this movie it seems to be more in the 15 million range, but does that include marketing? If that isn't figured in, you could easily double the expense. It can also involve how many tax breaks and distribution deals were made in advance. It seems to be doing ok and just went into wider release. Country fan or not, at least it's addressing an audience that's usually underserved.

  64. 64

    Re: Biebers #1 Fan

OR, you could keep watching confusing and "brain teaser" movies (like pi(tt),Donnie Darko, Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes), i bet in no time, your musical taste will change drastically, try to watch black swan again, you might be able to understand more things, bye sweety.

  65. 65

She's doing country music, because any idiot can do country music, which since the 90's has been contrived crap. Real country can be heard from the 40's, Hank Williams Sr. who is a musical titan as much as Lennon- McCartney are, through to the 60's and 70's. the 80's and 90's, not so much.

  66. 66

Thank goodness I got a Senior ticket to see Country Strong…I truly would be upset if I had paid 10 bucks for that movie! First of all Tim McGraw spent last week on all the talk shows talking about the music in the movie and how great it was…that lead me to believe he would be singing duets with Gwyneth or that in some way he sings as well in the movie…NOT A PEEP! he does not sing at all. ANYONE could have played his role of the hubby/manager! I wonder why he would choose the role of a jerk…wait, he WAS good at playing a jerk…what does that tell ya? The guy who played Beau…I don't know his name was a good singer and very nice eye candy! I'm surprised that it bombed…the matinee I went to was sold out…come to think of it…they were mostly Seniors as well. As for Gwyneth…I wish it were the movie I thought it would be…a depiction of what life of a female country singer on the road…I would have liked seeing more of her portraying that role. oh well!

  67. 67

It bombed because they are only showing it at selected theatres. In Ontario I know about 20 people who said they wanted to see that movie and then they only put it in theatres in Toronto , not in Ottawa, Belleville, Kingston or anywhere in between so many people are dissapointed by this

  68. 68

Re: Bobbarita – I do as well. She's boring.

  69. 69

    Re: JenKnee – LOL

  70. 70

Re: boston61 – 'Everyone hates poor Gywn'? I don't. I've admired her work since Shakespeare In Love. And if it comes to my area (it hasn't yet) I intend to see her film. That's probably part of the problem right there. It's not in enough theatres.

  71. 71

    Re: sensfan999 – Well put.

  72. 72

I saw this movie this weekend and it was GREAT!! I was even debating on going to see it again. I am not a huge country fan, so I wasn't expecting to love the movie as much as I did.

  73. 73

I saw it and I loved it. Garrett Hedlund & Leighton Meester were amazing together. I would definately recommned this movie dispite what the box office shows, I would go see it again for Garret & Leightons duet on "Give into Me" alone. That song is amazing.

  74. 74

    Re: sensfan999
the movie has to be profitable in the 1st week to be a "success".

  75. 75

Re: bretticus21 – Tim McGraw racist? Are you serious? That is probably the most ridiculous thing I've heard about him, EVER!

  76. 76

    I want to see it.

  77. 77

    Total and complete fecal matter.
