ABC Gets Its Mini-Series On With Wicked

wicked mini series based on book in the works

Looks like those of you who haven't been able to make it to Broadway are in luck!

Salma Hayek and ABC are putting together an eight-hour mini-series based on the Wicked book, which also inspired the Broadway play.

Band of Brothers writer Erik Jendersen is writing the script, which should ensure it'll be a thoroughly intense mini-series!

Given the continuing popularity of the Wicked play, we're thinking this project could def be a winner for ABC and Mrs. Hayek.

Are U excited for Wicked on the small screen?

Chances are, the miniseries will be incredibly different from the musical. The two stories, while sharing the same basic plot, are share little else in common. I'm definitely looking forward to this.

Hey Fatback, the book is nothing like the play so stop trying to give big build up to this based on the "popularity" of the musical. They are very different. Oh, but if you knew how to read a book you might know that. Sure, the book MAY have INSPIRED the musical, but they both even have two different writers, kind of like you and your fat sister.
People expecting a small screen version of the musical will be disappointed, especially since you are saying if they missed it on Broadway, they can catch it there. Not the same.

My son is going to love this, He is such a Wicked fan. In fact we have tickets to see it this weekend.

The play is mere shadow of the book. The two stories are very very different and the book is very graphic, dark and taboo. I'd be surprised if ABC keeps the stroyline as is from the book.

I hope it IS more like the book as the musical is a version of Disney sexist bullshit where all the intelligent individuals are turned into vapid people obsessed with looks such as the prince (who BTW is not even supposed to be white) and the song "I'm not that girl" was never a thought that entered young Elphaba's mindset….

I am excited for this to come out! I will definitely be watching

The book is amazing!! and I loved the Musical…. I can't wait to see this

The book is NOTHING like the play. That said-I hope the miniseries is a close adaptation of the book.

The only thing in common between the novel and musical are the character's names.

I just had a mini heart attack! Ah!

hmmm. the books are sexually explicit and nothing like the play. A good thing it's on tv and not at the movies. I loved the books but even I was shocked at parts and I read a lot of romance novels. I cannot wait for this to come out!!!

I hope Salami loses that fake accent.

Like the others have been saying, the book is VERY different from the play. Depending on the age of your son and how closely the decide to follow the book, I would be cautious about letting him see it.

I don't know if people will be happy about this. I am excited to see it, but I am sure there a lot of people out there who like the play who have not read the book who will be expecting some happy, flashy, musical adaption. Book Elphaba is not the awkward, misunderstood sweet girl we all know and love. Book Elphaba was born with fangs and had to be wrapped in bandages and wear a muzzle as a child because she use to bite her own skin off. Nessarose was born pink with a limp and no arms. Not to mention the brutal murder of Dr. Dillamond, Fiyero and madame morrible.

ONLY IF IT STAYS TRUE TO THE BROADWAY VERSION! I hated THE BOOK (too slow for my tastes)! Plus, we need more Idina, Kristin and if they could get Joey - it'd be unstoppable!

The book was fantastic and I don't think ABC is going to do it justice. No way can they put out the full story on network tv. If HBO were doing it I'd be thrilled. Or a feature film series would truly do it best. (There are 3 novels.) If they truly brought it around to be Wicked, Son of the Witch and A Lion Among Men. Not that you've reported the full facts that this only one of TWO adaptations doing the rounds. Universal has the option for the film. Now THAT I'll be happy about. ABC's gonna hack it. If they don't, I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong. But I don't expect much from them sadly.

Re: dialysisdarling – did you not read this? it is not the musical. why would they get idina and kristin?

the show is based on the book. Universal is making a movie based on the musical.
